Foreign Affairs › Russia Plans Return To Trading In US Dollar System by RaySimran(op): 7:45pm On Feb 12 |
Russia Memo Sees Return to Dollar System in Pitch Made for TrumpThe Kremlin has set out proposals that could see Russia embrace the dollar again as part of a wide-ranging economic partnership with the Trump administration, according to an internal Russian document reviewed by Bloomberg.
The high-level memo, which was drafted this year, details seven points where, in the Kremlin’s view, Russian and US economic interests could converge following a deal to end the war in Ukraine. It sees the two countries working together to champion fossil fuels over greener alternatives as well as joint investments in natural gas, offshore oil and critical raw materials plus windfalls for US companies.
The proposal, which was circulated among senior Russian officials, provides previously unreported insight into Kremlin thinking and tactics at a moment when potential economic agreements between the US and Russia are being negotiated as a key plank of any future peace accord for Ukraine.
At the heart of the offer is Russia’s return to the dollar settlement system, a move which would mean a stunning reversal of Kremlin policy and, potentially, a dramatic shake up for global finance.
The US has already proposed gradually lifting sanctions on Russia as part of any peace agreement, a necessary first step for the country to start transacting in dollars again. But what the Kremlin memo considers would go far further.
Until now, finding alternatives to the dollar, rather than restoring links to the US-led system, has been a key goal for Russia as President Vladimir Putin sought to deepen his relationship with China. For that reason, western government officials familiar with the contents of the document said they think it is extremely unlikely that Putin would ultimately pursue a deal that runs counter to Beijing’s interests.
Putin’s spokesman Dmitry Peskov didn’t respond to an email seeking comment. It is unclear whether Russia has pitched any of the points contained in the document to the US. Foreign Affairs › Spanish Scientist Finds Cure For Pancreatic Cancer by RaySimran(op): 1:06pm On Jan 30 |
Spanish scientist finds cure for pancreatic cancer in major medical breakthroughA Spanish research team says it has developed a treatment that completely eliminated the most aggressive form of pancreatic cancer in laboratory mice, raising fresh hopes against one of the deadliest cancers. The study, led by Mariano Barbacid at Spain’s Spanish National Cancer Research Centre, found that a newly designed triple-drug therapy wiped out pancreatic tumours with no relapse seen after treatment. After six years of work, researchers reported that the animals showed minimal side effects and no tumour recurrence, results that mark one of the most promising advances yet in pancreatic cancer research.
Pancreatic cancer, particularly pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, is among the deadliest malignancies due to its resistance to treatment, dense tumour microenvironment, and late diagnosis. Standard therapies often fail because tumours rapidly adapt, bypassing single-target drugs.
The CNIO therapy takes a different approach. Instead of attacking one pathway, it combines three drugs to shut down multiple tumour survival mechanisms simultaneously. According to the researchers, this strategy prevents cancer cells from rewiring themselves, a common cause of treatment failure.
Barbacid has previously argued that pancreatic cancer cannot be defeated with a single-drug strategy. This tumour, he has said in earlier research discussions, is extraordinarily adaptable, and only coordinated inhibition of multiple pathways can produce lasting responses.
In controlled laboratory experiments, mice with advanced pancreatic tumours experienced complete tumour elimination after receiving the triple-drug therapy. Even more notable was what happened afterwards. During extended follow-up, researchers observed no tumour regrowth, suggesting that the therapy may suppress the biological mechanisms that typically drive relapse.
The findings were published inProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), where reviewers highlighted both the durability of the response and the unusually low toxicity seen in treated animals, a critical factor for any therapy aimed at human use.
Independent cancer researchers not involved in the study have noted that durable responses without relapse are exceptionally rare in pancreatic cancer models, making the results particularly significant within the field.
Who is Mariono Babacid: Barbacid is one of Europe’s most influential cancer researchers. In the early 1980s, he helped identify the first human oncogene, a discovery that fundamentally reshaped modern cancer biology and established the genetic basis of cancer.
Over the past four decades, his work has repeatedly focused on KRAS-driven tumours, long considered among the hardest cancers to treat. Because KRAS mutations are present in roughly 90 per cent of pancreatic cancers, Barbacid’s sustained focus on this pathway gives the current breakthrough added weight within the scientific community.
Funding, institutions, and credibility The research was conducted at CNIO, one of Europe’s leading cancer research institutions, with support from Fundación CRIS Contra el Cáncer, which funds high-risk, high-impact cancer research projects.
The study followed established experimental protocols and underwent independent peer review before publication. There is no evidence the findings were rushed or bypassed scientific safeguards, a point emphasised by CNIO officials amid online speculation. Foreign Affairs › Countries That Have Eaten Their Prime Minister by RaySimran(op): 2:38pm On Jan 29 |
World of Statistics @stats_feed Countries That Have Eaten Their Prime Minister:
1. Netherlands BACK STORYThe Dutch Golden Age, beginning in 1588, is known for the art of Rembrandt, the invention of the microscope, and the spice trade of the Dutch East India Company. It ended a little under a century later in a frenzy of body parts and mob justice.
In 1672, enraged by a fake news campaign, rioters killed the recently ousted head of state Johan de Witt and his brother Cornelis. The mob hung them upside down, removed their organs, ate parts of the corpses, and sold fingers and tongues as souvenirs.
Even in a period characterised by torture and assassination, this grisly act stands out as extreme. But it also stands as a warning from history about what can happen when disinformation is allowed to run rampant.
The attack on Johan and Cornelis de Witt was fuelled by a relentless flood of malicious propaganda and forgeries claiming the brothers were corrupt, immoral elitists who had conspired with enemies of the Dutch Republic.
The anonymous authors of the smear campaigns blamed Johan for war with England and “all the bloodshed, killing and injuring, the crippled and mutilated people, including widows and orphans” that allegedly kept him in power.
According to one pamphlet, the violence was legitimate because the ends justified the means: “Beating to death is not a sin in case it is practised against a tyrant.” The sentiment echoes a quote frequently attributed to Napoleon. Foreign Affairs › US Murder Rate Drops 20% In 2025, Lowest Since 1900 by RaySimran(op): 9:43am On Jan 23*. Modified: 10:31am On Jan 23 |
Murders plummeted more than 20% in U.S. last year, the largest drop on record, study showsMurders plummeted more than 20% in 2025 from the year before, the single-largest one-year drop on record — and it might be the lowest murder rate in the U.S. since 1900, a study released Thursday by the Council on Criminal Justice found.
The annual crime trends report analyzed data from 40 large cities across the United States for 13 different crime types, including murder, carjacking, theft and drug offenses.
Alongside homicides, which dropped 21% from 2024, carjackings have declined 61% since 2023, while shoplifting is down 10% since 2024. In general, the overall crime rate declined, with violent crimes at or below levels seen in 2019, the analysis found — drug offenses were the only category that rose during this period, while sexual assault remained even.
Researchers pointed toward multiple reasons for the large drop in homicides, but cautioned that "identifying decisive factors with certainty is challenging."
Senior research specialist Ernesto Lopez, lead author of the report, said that while the "overall reduction in crime, especially homicide, is welcome news," he noted homicide rates had been steadily dropping since the late 2000s, prior to a notable spike in 2020.
"It is possible that these rates reflect a longer-term downward trend punctuated by periods of elevated homicides," Lopez said.
The cities — which included New York, Philadelphia, Omaha, Nebraska, and Raleigh, North Carolina, among others — were selected based on the availability of crime statistics at the time of data collection in early January 2026.
While data varied between cities, researchers said there were 25% fewer homicides in 2025 compared to 2019, with rates dropping in 27 of 35 cities in the sample.
Richmond, Virginia, saw a drop of 59%, Los Angeles saw a drop of 39% and New York City dropped by 10%. Homicide rates in some cities remained stable and several other cities saw reductions of under 5%.
Atlanta Police Chief Darren Schierbaum said Tuesday at a news conference that his city has seen a dramatic decrease in shootings since 2022. He said the department recorded under 100 homicides in 2025 for the first time since before the COVID-19 pandemic. CCJ data recorded a drop of 14% in Atlanta's murders in 2025 from the previous year.
Schierbaum said a fair number of murders in Atlanta were the result of "escalating dispute," and called on the community to consider "conflict resolution."
A group of criminal justice experts convened by CCJ had varied answers as to what caused such a precipitous drop in homicides, but they were generally in agreement that the stabilization of routines, an influx of COVID-19 relief funds and program intervention were strong drivers.
"Many cities focused enforcement and prevention on the small number of neighborhoods and groups driving a large share of shootings, improved shooting investigations, and got the courts moving again," said Thaddeus Johnson, an assistant professor of criminal justice and criminology at Georgia State University, and a former Memphis police official.
He added that informal guardianship returned to the streets, saying bystanders and community presence can help defuse conflicts before they escalate.
"But national averages can hide what is happening in some neighborhoods. The key question is which neighborhoods are sustaining gains, and which are not," Johnson said. Source: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/murders-plummet-crime-trends-2025/?ftag=CNM-00-10aab7e&linkId=900540183Nlfpmod Mynd44

Foreign Affairs › European Union Officially Suspends Trade Deal With The US by RaySimran(op): 7:12pm On Jan 21 |
European officials suspend US trade agreement amid tariff dispute over GreenlandEuropean lawmakers on Wednesday suspended a trade agreement with the United States over tariff threats issued by President Donald Trump as part of his push to acquire Greenland.
The announcement came minutes after President Donald Trump reasserted his call for U.S. ownership of Greenland during a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland
The speech followed tariff threats issued by Trump days earlier against seven European Union countries, plus the U.K., over the issue.
European leaders, meanwhile, have pushed back on Trump's ambitions. Greenland is a self-governing territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, a member of the EU.
Members of the Committee on International Trade (INTA) – a body within the European Parliament – hold "unshakable commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Denmark and Greenland," European Parliament member Bernd Lange, an INTA chair on EU-US trade relations, said in a statement on Wednesday.
"By threatening the territorial integrity and sovereignty of an E.U. member state and by using tariffs as a coercive instrument, the U.S. is undermining the stability and predictability of EU-US trade relations," Lange added.
The EU and US struck the trade agreement in July, moving to ratchet down tariffs on European goods and restore stability to the commercial relationship. At the time, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said the agreement “creates certainty in uncertain times."
On Wednesday, Lange said the E.U. would pause the ratification process in response to Trump's proposed tariffs. Under Trump's plan, eight European nations – including Denmark, France, Germany and the United Kingdom – will be slapped with 10% tariffs beginning on Feb. 1. Those levies are set to escalate to 25% on June 1, Trump said.
In his speech on Wednesday, Trump ruled out use of the military in his push for Greenland. "We probably won't get anything unless I decide to use excessive strength and force where we would be, frankly, unstoppable. But I won't do that," Trump said.
U.S. stocks slumped on Tuesday in response to the tariffs, with the Dow closing down 870 points, but recovered roughly half of those losses in a rally on Wednesday morning. In Europe, the pan-continental STOXX 600 index ticked slightly lower on Wednesday Source: https://www.google.com/amp/s/abcnews.go.com/amp/Business/european-officials-suspend-us-trade-agreement-amid-tariff/story%3fid=129422031

Foreign Affairs › Re: European Troops Arrive In Greenland by RaySimran: 8:06pm On Jan 15 |
Dogalmighty17: All because of one insane man. A bit of a background how all this started. In 2019, then Senator Tom Cotton, submitted a letter to the Trump Whitehouse. The letter contained some documents that placed urgency on the need for the US to acquire Greenland. Danish intelligence determined that the documents were clever forgeries produced by Russia. It was a few weeks after this that Trump publicly mentioned for the first time that the US was interested in Greenland.
One of Trump's billionaire backers in his second term, Ronald Lauder, a man who has met Putin many times, has active interests in the mineral resources in Greenland and has bought a freshwater company there. He, together with Palantir Boss Peter Thiel (co-founder of PayPal with Elon Musk) are behind the pressure by Trump on Greenland. Peter Thiel is the one who insisted that Trump pick J.D Vance as vice president. His company, Palantir has been rewarded with contracts worth billions of dollars as a result. Peter Thiel wants to build for himself a technologically advanced community on Greenland, an exclusive community he will lord over.
It gets interesting. Bill Gates, Michael Bloomberg, Sam Altman, Jeff Bezos and the present US Commerce secretary, Billionaire Howard Lutnick have all invested in companies in Greenland. Guess who were sitting on the front row seats in Trump's second term inauguration ceremony? All the men listed above.
Greenland possesses no strategic military value for the United States. The US already has a military base there. This is all about billionaires using Trump to claim fresh pristine territory.
The ice sheets in Greenland are several miles thick. It will take tens of billions of dollars in investments before the mineral resources in Greenland can even be accessed and this is not something that can be done in less than 5 years.
Denmark has given its soldiers an order to shoot at sight any US invading force. Germany and France have committed to sending troops to Greenland. Even though they will stand no chance against the US, at least they will show intent. It is unfortunate though that any attempt by the US to invade Greenland will result in the end of NATO and that's exactly what Putin wants. Go read how US acquired great places like Cali. that's now the most prosperous among US states. He isn't invading. Greenland would be bought and NATO won't raise a finger |
