Scientists confirm biblical earthquake that shook the earth at the moment of Jesus' crucifixion

A decade-old study claiming to find evidence of the earthquake described in the Bible at the time of Jesus's crucifixion is reigniting debate after resurfacing online.

The Gospel of Matthew says 'the earth shook' moments after Jesus cried out before dying on the cross, and researchers in 2012 reported evidence that could support the verse.

A team of geologists examined sediment layers near the Dead Sea, about 25 miles from where many scholars believe the crucifixion took place. Their analysis revealed signs of at least two significant earthquakes affecting the region.

Disturbances in the sediment pointed to a major quake around 31 BC and a smaller seismic event sometime between 26 and 36 AD.

Researchers noted that this period aligns with the years Pontius Pilate served as procurator of Judea, the timeframe in which the Gospel of Matthew describes an earthquake following Jesus's death.

Pontius Pilate, the fifth governor of the Roman province of Judea, is identified in the Bible as the official who presided over Jesus's trial and ultimately sentenced him to death. Many scholars believe the crucifixion occurred around 33 AD.

However, the researchers cautioned that several explanations could account for the seismic evidence. One possibility is that it corresponds to the earthquake described in Matthew's Gospel. Another is that a separate earthquake occurred around the time of the crucifixion and was later woven into the biblical narrative.

The study, making waves on X, has been hailed as proof for the crucifixion by many, while others have expressed doubt over its precise dating and the causal link to the biblical event.

Users who called the study 'fake' claimed it would be impossible to date an earthquake to more than 1,500 years ago.

However, scientists can determine when earthquakes struck even thousands of years earlier, using a range of modern dating techniques.

These include radiocarbon testing of organic material found in fault trenches, analyzing tsunami deposits, examining disturbed sediment layers and studying tree rings through a method known as dendrochronology.

The debate began when an X user shared a post, which has been viewed more than 65,000 times, saying: 'Science (once again) confirms the Bible as a true account.'

Others flooded the comments, with one user saying, 'This matches the exact time when Jesus was crucified,' while many others were quick to dismiss the findings.

'A 10-year window is not exactly proof,' another commented.

The Dead Sea sits on a major fault line called the Dead Sea Transform, where two tectonic plates, the Arabian Plate and the Sinai Plate, meet and slide past each other.

Because of this, the area is very prone to earthquakes.

This fault mostly runs north to south, and in some places the ground pulls apart, and in others it pushes together, which creates different types of cracks and breaks in the Earth's crust.

The Dead Sea itself lies in a deep basin formed by this movement and is the lowest place on land on Earth. The region has experienced frequent earthquakes over the past century, and historical and archaeological records show that quakes have occurred there for at least 4,000 years.

Scientists found layers of sediment beneath the Dead Sea that appear bent and disturbed. They believe these distortions were caused by ancient earthquakes triggered by movement along the fault line.

By studying sediment layers at Ein Gedi near the Dead Sea, the team was able to read the Earth's history year by year.

Each year, the lake deposits a layer of sediment: a heavier winter layer and a lighter summer layer.

Some layers were deformed, meaning the sediment was bent or broken.

Scientists interpreted these deformed layers as evidence of ancient earthquakes.

By tracking these layers across two core samples, they built a timeline of earthquakes and yearly sediment deposits from 31 BC to 31 AD.

The sediment also records climate conditions, such as after a major earthquake in 31 BC, the summer layers were thinner and contained more gypsum, which suggested a drought.

Historical records, like those written by the Jewish historian Josephus, described famine and dry conditions in Judea at the same time, supporting the evidence from the sediments.

Using this timeline, scientists tried to identify which earthquake could match the one described in the Bible at the time of Jesus's crucifixion. Based on their analysis, the quake most likely occurred between 26 and 36 AD, during the period when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea.

Some layers were damaged or unclear, so the exact year is uncertain. However, independent studies using the same core samples produced similar results, giving researchers confidence in the dating.

The team also compared these sediments to other earthquakes reported in the region, including quakes in 19 AD, 37 AD, 47 AD and 48 AD. None were close enough or strong enough to have left the same marks in the Ein Gedi sediments.

Hungary will block a 90-billion-euro ($106 billion) EU loan for Ukraine until it resumes oil shipments to the country via the Druzhba pipeline, its foreign minister said on Friday after Budapest said it would tap strategic reserves to tackle a shortage.

Hungary and Slovakia, which have the only remaining refineries in the European Union using Russian oil through Druzhba, have been trying to secure supply since flows were halted on January 27 following what Ukraine said was a Russian drone attack that damaged pipeline infrastructure.

Both countries have blamed Ukraine for the delay in restarting the flows for political reasons. Reuters requested comments from the Ukrainian foreign ministry and the state oil and gas company on Thursday.

"By blocking oil transit to Hungary through the Druzhba pipeline, Ukraine violates the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement, breaching its commitments to the European Union. We will not give in to this blackmail," Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto said on X.

The Hungarian government said in a decree late on Thursday that it would release about 1.8 million barrels of crude oil from its strategic reserves to make up for shortfalls.
Croatia's JANAF pipeline operator, however, said on Friday there was no need for Budapest to do so after Hungary's oil company MOL (MOLB.BU), opens new tab said JANAF must allow transit of the Russian seaborne oil during the Druzhba outage.

"At this moment, a significant quantity of non-Russian crude oil is being transported via JANAF's pipeline for MOL Group, while three additional tankers carrying non-Russian oil, also for MOL Group, are on their way to the Omisalj Terminal," JANAF said in a statement.

"There was no need to tap into (their) reserves since oil transport via the JANAF pipeline towards MOL's refineries is being carried out continuously and without delays."

SCRAMBLE FOR CRUDE SUPPLIES
MOL is entitled to priority access to released crude oil reserves, and it will have access to the freed reserves until April 15 and has to return them by August 24, the Hungarian government decree said.
At the end of January, Hungary had enough crude oil and petroleum product reserves to cover 96 days, according to data on the Hungarian Hydrocarbon Stockpiling Association's website.

As the two countries scramble to ensure supplies, MOL ordered tankers delivering Saudi, Norwegian, Kazakh, Libyan and Russian oil to supply its Hungarian and Slovak refineries and halted diesel deliveries to Ukraine earlier this week.
MOL said that first shipments were expected to arrive at the port of Omisalj in Croatia in early March. After that, it will take a further 5-12 days for the crude oil to reach its refineries.

The Slovak government has also declared an oil emergency situation and has pledged to release 1.825 million barrels of oil following a request from Slovakia's Slovnaft refinery, which is owned by MOL.

Taliban 'legalises' domestic violence with new laws allowing husbands to beat women - as Afghanistan descends into the dark ages

The Taliban has passed a new law in Afghanistan allowing husbands to beat their wives as long as there is no serious bodily harm in a new criminal code published by the group.

The 90-page penal code, signed by Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban's supreme leader, sets out different levels of punishments for people depending on their standing in society.

Article 9 of the code divides Afghan society into four categories: religious scholars (ulama), the elite (ashraf), the middle class, and the lower class.

It appears to create a caste system in which offenders are categorised as either 'free' or 'a slave,' with women being placed on the same level as slaves.

Disturbing clauses state that 'slave masters,' or husbands, can give out physical punishments to their wives or subordinates.

Meanwhile, if a religious scholar or member of the elite commit an offense, the consequence is limited to advice or a court summons.

For the middle class the same crime can result in imprisonment, while the 'lower class' faces both corporal punishment and imprisonment.

The code, called De Mahakumu Jazaai Osulnama has been distributed across courts in the country, prompting waves of outrage online from activists outside Afghanistan.
Although citizens in the country are too afraid to speak out as it is, the Taliban passed another ruling stating that discussing the code would be deemed an offense.

According to the code, corporal punishment for serious crimes will be carried out by Islamic clerics, but encourages husbands to give out 'discretionary punishments' to their wives for less serious misdemeanors.

Regarding violence against women, Article 32 states that only if the husband beats the woman with a stick and this act results in severe injury such as 'a wound or bodily bruising', and the woman can prove it before a judge, will the husband be sentenced to fifteen days' imprisonment.

However, the contradiction lies in that a woman must remain fully covered while simultaneously proving her injuries to a judge.

She is also required to be accompanied by a male chaperone, which is usually the husband himself.

In addition, the code stops women from seeking refuge with their family to escape violence at home.

Writing on X, UN Special Rapporteur on Violence against Women and Girls Reem Alsalem said of the new laws: 'The implications of this latest code for women and girls is simply terrifying.

The Taliban however have understood, and understood correctly, that no one will stop them. Will the international community prove them wrong? And if so when?'

The new penal code comes as Islamic laws in Afghanistan have become so restrictive that even barbers are facing detention for cutting men's beards too short.

Officials tasked with promoting virtue 'are obliged to implement the Islamic system', he said.

In an eight-page guide to imams issued in November, prayer leaders were told to describe shaving beards as a 'major sin' in their sermons.

The religious affairs ministry's arguments against trimming state that by shaving their beards, men were 'trying to look like women'.

Russia Memo Sees Return to Dollar System in Pitch Made for Trump

The Kremlin has set out proposals that could see Russia embrace the dollar again as part of a wide-ranging economic partnership with the Trump administration, according to an internal Russian document reviewed by Bloomberg.

The high-level memo, which was drafted this year, details seven points where, in the Kremlin’s view, Russian and US economic interests could converge following a deal to end the war in Ukraine. It sees the two countries working together to champion fossil fuels over greener alternatives as well as joint investments in natural gas, offshore oil and critical raw materials plus windfalls for US companies.

The proposal, which was circulated among senior Russian officials, provides previously unreported insight into Kremlin thinking and tactics at a moment when potential economic agreements between the US and Russia are being negotiated as a key plank of any future peace accord for Ukraine.

At the heart of the offer is Russia’s return to the dollar settlement system, a move which would mean a stunning reversal of Kremlin policy and, potentially, a dramatic shake up for global finance.

The US has already proposed gradually lifting sanctions on Russia as part of any peace agreement, a necessary first step for the country to start transacting in dollars again. But what the Kremlin memo considers would go far further.

Until now, finding alternatives to the dollar, rather than restoring links to the US-led system, has been a key goal for Russia as President Vladimir Putin sought to deepen his relationship with China. For that reason, western government officials familiar with the contents of the document said they think it is extremely unlikely that Putin would ultimately pursue a deal that runs counter to Beijing’s interests.

Spanish scientist finds cure for pancreatic cancer in major medical breakthrough

A Spanish research team says it has developed a treatment that completely eliminated the most aggressive form of pancreatic cancer in laboratory mice, raising fresh hopes against one of the deadliest cancers. The study, led by Mariano Barbacid at Spain’s Spanish National Cancer Research Centre, found that a newly designed triple-drug therapy wiped out pancreatic tumours with no relapse seen after treatment. After six years of work, researchers reported that the animals showed minimal side effects and no tumour recurrence, results that mark one of the most promising advances yet in pancreatic cancer research.

Pancreatic cancer, particularly pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma, is among the deadliest malignancies due to its resistance to treatment, dense tumour microenvironment, and late diagnosis. Standard therapies often fail because tumours rapidly adapt, bypassing single-target drugs.

The CNIO therapy takes a different approach. Instead of attacking one pathway, it combines three drugs to shut down multiple tumour survival mechanisms simultaneously. According to the researchers, this strategy prevents cancer cells from rewiring themselves, a common cause of treatment failure.

Barbacid has previously argued that pancreatic cancer cannot be defeated with a single-drug strategy. This tumour, he has said in earlier research discussions, is extraordinarily adaptable, and only coordinated inhibition of multiple pathways can produce lasting responses.

In controlled laboratory experiments, mice with advanced pancreatic tumours experienced complete tumour elimination after receiving the triple-drug therapy. Even more notable was what happened afterwards. During extended follow-up, researchers observed no tumour regrowth, suggesting that the therapy may suppress the biological mechanisms that typically drive relapse.

The findings were published inProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS), where reviewers highlighted both the durability of the response and the unusually low toxicity seen in treated animals, a critical factor for any therapy aimed at human use.

Independent cancer researchers not involved in the study have noted that durable responses without relapse are exceptionally rare in pancreatic cancer models, making the results particularly significant within the field.

The research was conducted at CNIO, one of Europe’s leading cancer research institutions, with support from Fundación CRIS Contra el Cáncer, which funds high-risk, high-impact cancer research projects.
