The battle for control of the Strait of Hormuz has become the focal point of the Iran war. Over the past several months, both Iran and the United States have claimed the upper hand – and the competing rhetoric has caused considerable confusion and doubt

At the moment, however, the evidence is clear: The United States, patrolling the strait with its navy, is gaining ground – and Iran is losing much of its control of the critical waterway.

More than 80% of liquids transits through the Strait of Hormuz over the past two weeks have taken the Omani route – a UN-authorized shipping channel that Iran vehemently opposes – or have been “dark” transits that likely took the Omani route, according to Kpler, which tracks ships using transponders and satellite data.

Iran, declaring the strait under its control, has attacked dozens of ships that tried to travel the waterway via the north coast of Oman. Despite the risk, most ships have recently chosen to ignore Iran’s demands and cross the strait with the promise of protection from US naval forces.

“It increasingly looks like Iran has at least partially lost control of the strait,” said Homayoun Falakshahi, head of crude oil analysis at Kpler.

Shifting control

That stands in stark contrast to a month ago, when Kpler observed virtually no shipping traffic via the Omani route. The sharp reduction in traffic around Iran’s preferred route has prevented Iran from charging tolls on ship traffic through the strait – as it did in the spring.

The expiration of the Memorandum of Understanding between the United States and Iran this week in theory allows Iran to begin charging tolls again. But it doesn’t appear the country has been able to, according to Kpler.

“Iran’s request to collect tolls is something that most Middle East folks don’t want to do and haven’t been doing,” said Dan Pickering, founder and chief investment officer at Pickering Energy Partners. “So the Oman route absolutely makes the most sense.”

Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have chartered Very Large Crude oil Carriers (VLCCs) – the biggest oil tankers – to transit out of the Persian Gulf via the Strait of Hormuz, then transfering the oil to customers’ tankers outside the danger zone in the Gulf of Oman, according to Andy Lipow, president of Lipow Oil Associates.

To evade Iran’s attacks, they’ve turned their transponders off, often for weeks on end. That so-called dark traffic appears to have eluded some data-tracking services like Kpler as well. Although some can be picked up on satellite, it’s harder to track via traditional means.

But the United States, with significant military force on the water, has eyes on all ships passing through the strait and has reported significantly higher oil shipping numbers than most traditional estimates had previously suggested.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright last week said that combined oil transits through the strait and rerouted around the waterway totaled around 15 million barrels per day over the course of a week – much closer to the 20-million-barrel average from before the war.

Lack of clarity

That led President Donald Trump to declare Monday that the United States has “total control over the strait,” a questionable claim he has reiterated often throughout the conflict. Iran’s continued attacks and oil flows still well below pre-war levels suggest the United States does not fully control the Strait of Hormuz.

“If their goal is to be ‘in charge,’ then I’d say they were never completely in control to start with,” said Pickering. “It feels like their goal is deterrence, in order to be validated as in-control. I think they are still deterring.”

But if tankers are really getting as much oil through the strait as the United States claims, then Iran’s deterrence and control of the Strait of Hormuz is diminished compared to what it was a month or two ago.

Brain activity inhibition during Short Video Viewing: neurochemical insights (Hong et al., NeuroImage, 2026) is a preregistered multimodal neuroimaging study examining how watching short videos affects cognitive-control brain regions and how resting neurochemistry relates to those changes.

Cognitive control helps people balance immediate rewards against longer-term goals. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) and dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) form a core network for this function: the dACC monitors conflict and effort demands, while the dlPFC implements top-down regulation. Prior work has shown that immersive media can produce flow-like states with reduced prefrontal monitoring. Short-video platforms, with their rapid, algorithmically curated, low-effort content, may be especially potent at shifting processing toward emotional engagement and immediate gratification, potentially weakening self-control in some users.

The study combined resting-state proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H-MRS) and task-based functional MRI in 56 healthy young adults (mean age ~23 years). At rest, researchers measured glutamate (the main excitatory neurotransmitter) and GABA (the main inhibitory neurotransmitter) in the dACC (and a visual-cortex control region). Participants then freely viewed short video clips while able to skip any they did not want to finish. Videos watched to completion were classified as “liked”; those terminated early as “disliked.” Analyses focused on dACC and left dlPFC activation and functional connectivity during these conditions, controlling for head motion and other covariates.

Key results: both the dACC and dlPFC showed significant deactivation (relative to baseline) during liked videos. During disliked videos, dACC activity returned roughly to baseline while dlPFC remained somewhat suppressed; the deactivation was reliably stronger for liked than disliked content. The primary visual cortex (control region) activated similarly for both video types, confirming the deactivation was not a global visual or attention effect. Functional connectivity between dACC and dlPFC increased above baseline during viewing and was stronger for liked videos; connectivity with visual cortex did not change.

Resting dACC glutamate levels predicted individual differences in these responses: higher glutamate was associated with less suppression (i.e., relatively higher activation) in both dACC and dlPFC. GABA concentrations showed no comparable relationship with the cognitive-control regions. Metabolite levels in the visual control region did not predict activation there. No reliable links emerged between the metabolites and the observed connectivity changes.

The authors interpret the deactivation during preferred videos as an adaptive downregulation that supports low-effort, immersive, flow-like processing rather than a failure of control capacity. Participants still actively evaluated content (skipping many clips), so the effect is unlikely to reflect pure disengagement. Higher baseline glutamate may leave the network in a more “ready” excitatory state, reducing the degree of deactivation. Increased dACC–dlPFC coupling during liked videos is interpreted as coordinated disengagement under shared affective modulation (possibly involving amygdala input), rather than heightened control demand.

Limitations include the lack of dlPFC metabolite measurements, reliance on behavioral skipping rather than explicit liking ratings, absence of formal measures of problematic short-video use, a predominantly young male sample, and the correlational nature of the glutamate–BOLD associations. Longitudinal work and broader demographic sampling are needed to assess long-term cognitive consequences and generalizability.
In everyday language: When people watch short videos they really enjoy and finish, two key brain areas that normally help with self-control and decision-making quiet down a lot. These areas stay more active (or closer to normal) when the videos are ones people skip early. The amount of a brain chemical called glutamate that a person has in one of those areas while at rest helps explain why some people’s control regions shut down more than others: higher glutamate goes with less shutdown.

The two control areas also start working more in sync during the liked videos. Altogether, the findings suggest that getting absorbed in preferred short videos temporarily turns down the brain’s self-control network, and individual differences in a basic excitatory chemical help set how strongly that happens. This offers a neurochemical window into why some people find it hard to stop scrolling.
