If the developed countries in the world are confidently running their generators on gas, developing countries should also embrace the idea. We use gas for cooking in our various homes and we even keep the cylinder in an enclosed cabinet in the kitchen and we are not scared. Why should we be scared of using gas to power our generators in the open air?

Why should I have one installed on my generator now?
*Option of running on either petrol or cooking gas is provided, hence you can no longer be stranded during petrol scarcity.
*Running generators on gas is cheaper than running on petrol. If and when the fuel subsidy is finally removed, gas will become much more cheaper than petrol. And if you wait till then, you risk paying more if not double the price for what should have cost you less now.
*Aside all these, running generators on cooking gas is greener and eco-friendly.

Trouble shooting and solution:

*After installation, the generator won't start - press the primer button 3 times to allow shots of gas into the carburetor and then restart.
*After drawing the choke, the generator won't start - close the choke and restart.
*The generator works perfectly on petrol but shoots on gas - air is mixed with the gas in the cylinder. Push down the valve of the cylinder to let out the air in the cylinder. Don't stop till you begin to feel the coolness of the gas. Thereafter replace the regulator and restart.
*The generator works erratically on petrol and gas - check the gasket between the carburetor and the combustion chamber for cracks and replace with new one. Loss of pressure could cause this behaviour.
*The generator won't start because of low gas pressure - the cylinder might be empty or the regulator might be blocked. Replace the regulator with a new one if blocked.

Installation is very simple and must be done step by step:
*Check the oil level and run the generator to ensure that it is in perfect working condition.
*Open the air filter compartment and remove the filter.
*Unscrew the air filter housing to expose the two nuts attaching the carburetor to the combustion chamber.
*Unscrew the nuts carefully from the studs.
*Partially shift the carburetor forward a bit to expose the gasket.
*Please take note of the gasket between the combustion chamber and the carburetor and ensure that it is not damaged. Because of damaged, it would lead to pressure loss and make the generator unstable.
*If gasket is cracked or damaged, you can replace it with a new one. It is quite cheap.
*Carefully remove the connecting rod and the spring on the carburetor.
*Thereafter, the carburetor can be brought out completely and replaced with the dual fuel carburetor.
*Follow the above step in reverse order to install the dual fuel carburetor.

Challenges and maintenance:

When you are using petrol, there are problems of smoking and breakdown of the generator caused by the carbon deposits on the spark plug and in the carburetor. But when you are using gas, there will be no smoke and no carbon deposits on the plug and in the carburetor. Just imagine how it feels when using cooking gas to cook in the kitchen. The only thing you will have to change on monthly basis depending on the generator usage is the oil and occasionally the spark plug. The generator itself needs no servicing.
Natural gas or cooking gas makes the generator last longer than petrol, so there is practically no challenge faced converting to gas. The only challenge is; the converted gas generator must be placed in an open space, not in closed door, so that if there is gas leakage, it can easily diffuse into the air.
Aside this, the exhaust and the gas cylinder must be placed in opposite direction I.e. must not be placed on front of the exhaust.

No special skill is required in installation of dual fuel carburetor, as an ordinary person can get it done as long as he or she has eyes on details, and has been taken through a practical session. But there might be some technicality issues after conversion and installation in the area of generator servicing or maintenance which might need the help of an expert or a professional generator engineer.

Features of Dual Fuel Carburetor:

* Allows standard gasoline generators to run on cooking gas

Fuel Consumption of LPG Generators and Operations:

Every generator will have a slightly different characteristics but as a rule of thumb, a generator running on LPG (cooking gas) will use between 0.25kg - 0.4kg of LPG for every kW/hour of electricity depending on the capacity of the generator and the load on it.

The operation is very simple. Just open the gas with the regulator and start the generator. Please note that you don't have to draw the chock to start the generator on gas. Petrol and gas can not be used to run the generator at the same time. The fuel in the carburetor must be drained first by allowing the generator to burn it off completely before the gas cylinder is opened. But since the carburetor has dual function, if you are tired of using gas you can as well switch over to petrol.
Any left over fuel is the carburetor will lead to incomplete combustion of the fuel and the generator will be unstable for a while until the petrol is completely burned out then it will stabilize itself whole running on gas.

Running gasoline generators on gas is seen as less of fire hazard than petrol because of the following reasons:
*There is less danger of spill. The fuel tank of gasoline generators is mounted directly on the hot exhaust. Any little spill could result to fire outbreak when the generator is running. In case of leakage or spillage of gas while generator is running, the gas simply diffuses into the air.
*Carbon monoxide emission on gasoline generators is very high and it kills rapidly when too much of it is inhaled. Apart from being a killer, it destroys or degrades the ozone layer in the atmosphere fast leading to global warming. Carbon monoxide emission of Generators running on gas is very low. The fumes from the exhaust is cleaner with no carbon deposits. It makes our environment greener and also eco-friendly.

I am confident and of a strong belief that running generators on gas is likely going to be on the increase and sooner or later will become the standard practice with time.

The advantages of using LPG (cooking gas) to run generators are enormous:
* Gas is relatively cheaper than petrol, hence the cost is drastically reduced.
* During the time of fuel scarcity, gas is available to run your generators hence you are guaranteed constant supply of electricity.
* If a generator is likely to be idle for a long period of time probably as backup generator, the chances are that any petrol contained within the system will degrade and block the carburetor with time making it unstable when required. But an LPG generator can remain idle for years and still start perfectly when required. LPG has no degrade prone product that can block the carburetor or hinder its operation.
