Ans: No. Dual fuel carburetor will not work for any gasoline generator that is above 10kva. The engine of most of those generators are designed like vehicular engine with an attached oil filter.

Ans: No. The reason being that it is impossible to mix engine oil with gas. "I better pass my neighbour" generator uses single stroke engine designed in such a way that the engine oil must be mixed with petrol in certain ratio for the generator to run smoothly. This can not be achieved with cooking gas.

Que: What is the failure rate of the device?

Ans: Several factors can contribute to the failure of the generator to start or function.
*Shortage of engine oil in the generator
*Bad spark plug
* Stiffness of the valves as a result of abuse in the generator usage leading to shooting.
*Worn out piston rings etc.

The fact that the generator itself is having an issue or mechanical problem does not mean the device has failed. Once the issue or the issues are resolved, nothing stops the device from performing optimally. Meaning that the probability of the device failing is next to zero if the device itself is not tampered with. This submission is based on the fact that the generator is assumed to be running on gas and not petrol.

Ans: No. The only maintenance required is to service your generator as at when due regularly. I.e. change the engine oil and clean the spark plug or change it if need be. Ans: No, there won't be any form of explosion. It the gas and petrol are opened at the same time, the following are the likely reactions:

*The generator will refuse to start.
*If it starts, the idle will be rough and there might be emission of black smoke.
*If it starts, the generator might be vibrating seriously.

These are the likely effects or the reactions that may be observed on the generator if gas and petrol tanks are opened at the same time. Once one is turned off, the work becomes normal again without any damage to the engine of the generator.

How long will 12.5kg cylinder last?
On 1.3 - 1.6 kva generator, you can have 50 - 65hrs
On 2.0 - 2.9 kva generator, you can have 35 - 40 hrs
On 3.5 - 10 kva generator, you can have 14 - 20 hrs.
Please note that the consumption rate depends on the capacity of the generator. Though 3.5 and 10 kva are using the same carburetor, the consumption rate will definitely be different based on the engine size of the generator.

Question: What is the shelf life of the dual fuel carburetor?
Answer: I always tell my clients that it is transferable. In other words, as long as the settings remain unaltered and the generator is properly maintained, the carburetor will keep working. Even if you decided on the long run to buy another generator, the carburetor will still perform optimally without any drop in its efficiency. I have been using mine for close to 2 years now and the efficiency is still very high.

Do you know that it is safer to store gas in the cylinders than to store petrol in jerry cans...

It takes N2,175 to buy 15 litres of fuel which can be exhausted within 14 hours on 2.0 - 2.9 kva generator. But with 12.5kg gas @ N3,000, 2.0 - 2.9 kva generator will run for 12 x 3 hours minimum (36 hours) saving over N3,000 on petrol.

It also takes N4,350 to buy 30 litres of fuel which can be exhausted with 10 - 12 hours on 3.5 - 10kva generator. But with 12.5kg gas @ N3,000, 3.5 - 10kva generator will run for 12 - 20 hours depending on the engine capacity of the generator. Even at 12 hours, over a N1000 is saved running on gas as against petrol.

The fuel situation in the country is not getting better, so much pressure is on petrol. Most of the long queues of jerry cans at the filling stations are for the generators and not for vehicles. Let us shift focus from using petrol to run our generators to gas and leave the petrol for vehicles.

Gas versus petrol:
It is far more dangerous to store petrol in jerry cans than to store gas in cylinders. The quality of petrol degrades significantly after 3 months of storage whereas gas can stay for years in cylinders without any degrade or reduction in quality. Petrol tanks for generators are mounted directly over and above the hot exhaust which could result to disaster in case of spillage or leakage whereas how close the gas cylinder is to the generator will be determined by the yardage of hose used.
