But admiration for Fela should not prevent us from asking difficult questions about the image he represented.

One of the most troubling aspects of the Fela image was the strong association with smoking, marijuana and sexual excess. To many young people, particularly those who encountered the image without fully understanding the political and intellectual ideas behind his music, these behaviours could appear glamorous, rebellious and even desirable.

That was a bad message to represent.

Smoking should never have been allowed to become part of the visual language of rebellion. When a celebrated cultural figure repeatedly appears smoking, surrounded by people who admire him, the habit can acquire an association with confidence, freedom and masculinity. Young people who want to identify with that image may begin to see smoking not as a harmful habit but as part of the lifestyle of the "strong," independent or rebellious man.

The same concern applies to the representation of women.

Fela's numerous relationships and marriages became an important part of his public image. Whatever his personal reasons may have been, presenting a man surrounded by numerous women as the ultimate symbol of freedom and masculinity can send a problematic message to young men.

It can create the impression that a man's status is measured by how many women he can attract or control.

That is not a healthy definition of masculinity.

Women should not be presented as trophies of male success. A society that teaches boys to measure their worth through the number of women they sleep with risks producing men who confuse sexual conquest with achievement and possession with love.

There is another problem: young people often imitate the most visible part of an icon's lifestyle rather than the deeper philosophy behind it.

Fela's political courage required education, conviction, sacrifice and intellectual engagement. But smoking requires no political education. Womanizing requires no understanding of his music or activism. A young admirer could therefore copy the appearance without understanding the substance.

This is how cultural influence can become distorted.

Instead of learning from Fela's courage to challenge injustice, a young person might copy his smoking. Instead of learning his willingness to question authority, he might copy his sexual lifestyle. Instead of studying his music and political philosophy, he might simply imitate the outward appearance of the man.

That is why cultural icons carry a responsibility, whether they choose to acknowledge it or not.

Artists do not have to be perfect. They are human beings with contradictions and weaknesses. But when their lifestyles become cultural symbols, society has every right to examine what those symbols communicate to younger generations.

The argument is not that Fela personally caused today's smoking culture or that every young Nigerian who smokes or disrespects women is copying him. That would be an unfair and impossible conclusion to prove.

The argument is simpler: the glorification of smoking and sexual excess was a poor cultural representation for young people to consume and imitate.

Fela's greatest contribution could have been his music, his creativity, his fearless opposition to oppression and his insistence that Africans should think for themselves. Those are the aspects of his legacy worth carrying forward.

The smoke did not make Fela courageous.

The women did not make him revolutionary.

His music, ideas, convictions and willingness to confront power were what made him historically significant.

Young Africans should therefore learn to separate the man from the mythology. We can acknowledge Fela's enormous contribution to African music and social commentary while also saying clearly that some aspects of the lifestyle associated with his public image were not worthy of imitation.

Our young people need role models who demonstrate courage without self-destruction, confidence without arrogance, masculinity without the objectification of women, and freedom without addiction.

That is the kind of cultural representation worth building for the next generation.
