During the last election, Nigerians were surprised at the number of entertainers who ventured into politics. Among them was popular Nigerian singer, Tony Tetuila.

While a few got the offices they contested for, most lost the elections.

In a chat with Saturday Beats, Tetuila fondly referred to as the Golden Boy of Africa, narrated what it was like participating in Kwara State politics.

He further explained that even though he did not win, the governor of Kwara State, Abdulfatah Ahmed, promised him a political appointment; a pledge he has yet to redeem three years down the line.

He said, “I took a break from music for 11 years because I wanted to face my other businesses and politics as well. I had to focus on my political career. The Kwara State governor actually promised me a political appointment which I am still waiting for. But I cannot wait forever. If God says it is my fate, then, I would definitely get it.

“I spent a lot of money during my foray into politics but I decided to come back to music which is what I know how to do best. When it comes to politics, if you do not get the position you are contesting for, it simply means that you would run at a loss. I thank God because I may have lost money but I gained a lot of experience.

“I know more about politics than I did before. Politics is all about patronage and deceit. If you meet the right people, your dreams would come true. But if you meet the wrong people, your dreams would turn into a nightmare. I learnt a lesson and even though I did not win, it does not mean that I am going to back off.

“I lost a lot of money which I cannot estimate but the experience that I got is immeasurable.

“The last time I saw Governor Ahmed, he told me that his administration still had two years. So, I believe that he would still do something. I have not recovered the money I lost when I ventured into politics but I am not crying over that because I am a man.

“When you venture into a new business, it is either you get lucky or not. I am able to get money from my other businesses, for instance, I have trucks which deliver nothing less than N150,000 per week. I cannot tell you how many trucks I have. I have been in the business for a long while.”

However, the singer told Saturday Beats that he is back to the studio to churn out more music.

He posted the link to one of his new songs on the Internet, which he said had been attracting different feedbacks from his fans.

Tetuila said, “Some people have told me that it sounds good while some others have told me to work harder but that is life for you. I am working on a new song, ‘This Girl’, and it would be released this month. Every song that turns into a hit has been destined by God. The success of any song is in the hands of God. But I believe that anything that comes from Tony Tetuila would always be a hit song. I have no problem if the song becomes a hit or not. My sound, style, and even voice are unique and cannot be copied,” he said.

- There is a drop in prices of foodstuffs in Borno state

- Prices of rice had fallen in the past two months with the beginning of crop harvest by farmers

- A 50kg bag of local rice goes for between N6,500 and N7,200 as against the old price of N9,000

Prices of local rice and other foodstuffs have dropped by about 25 per cent in Maiduguri, Borno state, according to a survey by the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

A check by NAN at Gamboru and Customs area markets in Maiduguri indicated that prices of rice had fallen in the past two months with the beginning of crop harvest by farmers.

NAN reports that rice farmers had recorded bumper harvests this cropping season, forcing the prices of the staple food crushing.

A 50kg bag of local rice goes for between N6,500 and N7,200 as against the old price of N9,000, while a measure of the produce is sold at N380.

The development has affected the price of refined rice which also declined.

A 50kg bag is being sold at between N15,000 and N16,500 from the old price of N17,500.

A measure of the commodity now goes for N900 as against N1,050, depending on its quality.

Prices of other produce had also dropped significantly in the past months as a measure of maize is sold at N280, beans N450 and millet N350, as against the previous prices of N420, N600 and N500, respectively.

Similarly, a measure of groundnut oil is sold at N280 as against N500.

Traders at the markets attributed the drop in prices to improvement in the supply of the commodities.

Malam Ali Muhammad, a rice dealer, said that prices of rice were falling on daily basis in view of the fresh supplies from the farms.

Muhammad also attributed the situation to improvement in the supply of local produce to the market, adding that the development is encouraging.

“There is a significant increase in the number of farmers who cultivated rice and other produce this cropping season.

“Prices will further go down as supply improves,’’he said.

Muhammad said that rice dealers were now enjoying appreciable patronage.

Also commenting, Ya-Ana Yusuf, a peanut grower, said that the massive mobilisation of farmers in liberated communities had encouraged production and forced grain prices down in the state.

Malam Muhammad Dungus, a resident, expressed joy over the development, and urged traders to further reduce their prices.

NAN reports that the Federal Government in collaboration with Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) had distributed fertilisers, seeds and inputs to over 1.1 million farmers in the Northeast this cropping season.

More than 5,000 rice farmers were also supported by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) under the Anchor Borrowers Scheme in Borno.

Meanwhile, NAIJ.comhad reported that prices of some basic food items in various markets across the country crashedafter Nigeria’s independence anniversary.

According to findings by NAIJ.comat Sabo Ayangburen market, Ikorodu, Lagos, the prices of goods like rice, beans, yam, garri, and some other perishable items have become available and affordable.

This good news as described by many, was the result of the sustainable focus on agricultural development by the present administration, that has led to the availability of some goods in various market across the country.

A 22-year-old woman woke up to find a man sexually assaulting her while she slept aboard a Spirit Airlines flight to Detroit.

The man sitting next to her was apprehended and charged with aggravated sexual abuse by federal authorities following the flight Wednesday.

The woman was sitting in the window seat next to the man, Prabhu Ramamoorthy. She was awoken to find her shirt and pants unbuttoned with Ramamoorthy digitally penetrating her, according toThe Detroit News.

Ramamoorthy stopped when he saw that the woman was awake.

The woman notified a flight attendant.

Ramamoorthy was then detained by the Wayne County Airport Authority. He later told authorities that he had fallen into a deep sleep and did not assault the woman.

But then he admitted to FBI officials that he “might have” unclasped the bra of the woman sleeping next to him, grabbed her breast and unzipped her pants, according to the publication.

According to the Association of Flight Attendants-CWA, a union for flight attendants, one out of five flight attendants surveyed from a group of 2,000 last year said they had received a report of a passenger being sexually assaulted.

Spirit Airline officials did not respond to requests for comment.

A hospital has apologised after a baby died when doctors accidentally cut into his skull during a Caesarean section.

Carson Allen died three hours after his birth on July 3, 2013 when doctors made a two-inch deep cut into his scalp and skull, causing him to haemorrhage.

His mother, Claire Smith, 41, has now had an undisclosed settlement and an apology from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.

The trust said the care Miss Smith received during pregnancy was not up to standard.

Head of service for obstetrics and gynaecology, Dr. Lucy Kean, said: “We reiterate the trust’s condolences to the family on the death of their son Carson, and apologise for the shortfalls in our care, mindful that no words or amount of money can undo the harm and distress the family have experienced as a result of this case.”

In October 2011, she had a gynaecological procedure known to cause complications, and pregnancy should have been avoided afterwards.

The trust has accepted Miss Smith was not properly advised of the risks.

An inquest heard there were several missed opportunities to access a full medical history or even check Miss Smith’s medical records properly.

Miss Smith, of Top Valley, Nottingham, said: “I found the inquest very difficult and have spent the past four years thinking this was my fault.

“I thought the cut on Carson’s head was because of the procedure I had in 2011 – it wasn’t until the result of the post-mortem that I found out it was caused by a scalpel.

“As if losing my baby wasn’t enough, I have been put through hell fighting for the reassurance that I could not have prevented my baby son’s death.”

Miss Smith described her care as “absolutely horrendous” and “unacceptable.”

She added:“During my C-section, the doctor cut my baby’s head so deeply that he died.

“I am a good mum and the chance to be a mum to Carson was taken away from me.

“It has been the worst experience of my life and I doubt my family will ever get over our loss.”

Caf president Ahmad Ahmad addressed the move at a press conference in Accra on Wednesday.

Caf president Ahmad Ahmad has shed light on his outfit's decision to do away with the African Best Player Based in Africa category at the annual awards gala holding in Accra, Ghana on Thursday.

Having initially announced nominees for the 2017 edition, the football governing body decided to ditch the category which was instituted in 2005, amid criticisms from several quarters.

"It's very simple - we want to promote African football," Ahmad explained at a presser in Accra on Wednesday ahead of Thursday night's gala.

"There's no two levels of football in Africa. Best is best, not best for the bad or best for the best. That's the reason."

Egypt legend Mohamed Barakat became the first ever recipient of the African Best Player Based in Africa award in 2005 while Uganda goalkeeper Denis Onyango scooped the last honour in 2016.

Another dropped category is the Caf Referee of the Year.

"The referees already have their own awards by being recognised for high profile games," said, Ahmad.

"Based on the locations of the referee, they're rewarded with - say for example - the champions league quarterfinals and subsequent games.

"Another argument is that it is unethical. The committee believes that by giving referees awards, it may lead to some corruption at a later stage."

Gambian referee Bakary Gassama will, thus, remain the last recipient of the award following his honour in 2016.

Former 3SC striker Gbolahan Salami, who moved to Finland in 2016, said one of the major reasons he left for Europe despite being one of the most celebrated players in the local league was to live up to his responsibility as a breadwinner of his family.

“I have a family that I feed. I have a mother, a sister and wife that I take care of. Should I go and rob? When I demand for my rights, they say I’m rude,” he said.

The Chairman, LMC, Shehu Dikko, urged the players to get lawyers and advisers to negotiate on their behalf before signing contracts with any club, saying that would halt the incessant problems of being owed or underpaid.

“The issue is not about LMC not enforcing players’ welfare but we are trying to work within the reality on ground and set out strategy to eliminate the issue completely. But the biggest problem mostly comes from the players and coaches themselves. They sign contracts without advisers and only run to us when they get into problems. A player or coach has no business going about chasing money but rather his lawyer and or intermediary should be doing that and believe me, even the clubs would sit up,”

Dikko, who is also the 2nd Vice President, Nigeria Football Federation, said.

Ezeji, who was once the highest-paid player in the league, corroborates Dikko’s stand, saying he was never owed during his playing days because he employed the services of lawyers.

“I’ve always told my fellow players to use lawyers when they are negotiating their contracts with the clubs. If players do things the legal way, nobody or club can cheat them. It is cheaper to hire a lawyer than to go without one and get cheated by club managers. A club can rob a player of up to 80 per cent of his sign-on fee but a lawyer will collect only about 20 per cent.”

But a footballer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said hiring a lawyer was a difficult task for the present day Nigerian footballer because of the harsh economic torture he is made to pass through.

Our source said, “Is it a player that hasn’t been paid for eight, 11 months that will employ a lawyer? Where will he get such money from, when he has huge debts to settle after being owed for several months?”

Olufemi believes the trend might not end too soon.

“The problem is everywhere. If you like, leave Enyimba to Abia Warriors, you will meet the same problem. When I watch European football, I marvel because the players give their best because they are well-paid. Here club managers want us to play like everything is fine? How is that possible when we play on empty stomachs? It’s frustrating,” he stated.

Players — those playing for the state government sponsored clubs — besieging State Government Houses across the country protesting non-payment of salaries have become a regular occurrence in Nigeria.

Even the female footballers are not exempted. In August, Nigeria Women’s Professional League side, Heartland Queens, blocked Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha’s convoy from entering the Government House in Owerri in protest against their unpaid salaries.

The placard-carrying protesters said they had not been paid for seven months by the Imo State Government, owners of the club.

However, the footballers are sometimes brutalised by their paymasters, if they run out of luck, while fighting for their rights.

On December 4, 2015, players of disbanded FC Taraba and Taraba Queens besieged the Taraba State Government House in Jalingo to demand the payment of their outstanding 11 and 21 months salaries and match bonuses respectively.

The players were not paid by the management of the state-owned club throughout their campaign in the 2014/15 season of the NPFL.

However, about a dozen armed soldiers deployed by government beat up the footballers, inflicted varying degrees of injuries on them and forcefully stopped their protest.

However, one of the most worrying scenes in Nigerian football took place earlier in this month, when a picture of Rivers United players lieing down and kneeling while begging Governor Nyesom Wike to pay their allowances and sign-on fees for the 2014/15 season, went viral on the social media.

It was gathered that the players were owed by the previous administration, before Sharks and Dolphins were merged, which gave birth to Rivers United.

Former Enyimba striker, Victor Ezeji, who played in the domestic topflight for 20 years, lamented the situation, saying it wasn’t as bad during his playing days.

“It’s a very difficult situation for the players; that is why the people who really don’t understand blame the players when they protest,” the 2003 CAF Champions League winner said.

“In our time, it was sign-off fees that were being owed, not salaries. But the issue of money owed players today is because most of the clubs don’t have budgets. In a situation they run to government every moment for sustenance, they will never be able to cater for the welfare of their players.”

So how do the footballers, who are breadwinners of their families, meet up with their responsibilities on the home front?

“We are supposed to be our families’ breadwinners but most times we are not,” ex-Remo Stars attacking midfielder, Opeolu Olufemi, who is currently on trials at 3SC, said.

“Our family members wonder when we call them and ask them to send us recharge cards and money. Sometimes we borrow each other money; sometimes we eat food on credit from food sellers and sometimes live on the goodwill of well-wishers.

“Can you imagine a registered professional league player borrowing money not to buy a house or car but to eat? That’s how we survive.”

Okoro said the footballers have adopted several other means to survive.

He added, “The fact is that if you play football here, you have to save some money, even when you can’t eat, especially when you are married. What the married players do now is to quickly establish their wives, so that in times of distress, they can take care of their families.

“Some others take to trading selling boots and clothes as a back-up. Those who earn big salaries can buy cars, which they use for transport when they are owed. The other option is to have some people you can borrow money from till your club pay your salary before you refund the money to them. It’s not easy with us.”

But Ezeji says the moneylenders take undue advantage of the situation to rip players off.
“There are people out there who take advantage of the situation. These people are ready to give you loans to survive but in most cases you pay 100 per cent interest on the loans. Sometimes you are given N50,000 to pay N80,000 or in some cases N50,000 to N100,000. When the salary is not forthcoming, the players will always run back to these same people,” he said.

“When the salaries are paid, the players are already owing huge sums of money and can’t do anything it. But if the salaries are regular, the situation will be better.”

Though the likes of Kano Pillars’ trio Rabiu Ali (N800,000), Gambo Mohammed (N800,000) and Chinedu Udoji (N800,000), as well as Akwa United defender Namso Ede (N700,000) and IfeanyiUbah goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa (N600,000) are the highest earners in the league, our correspondent learnt that some of the clubs don’t adhere to the N150, 000 minimum wage stipulated for the players by the League Management Company, organisers of the league.

“In Nigeria, anything is possible. They tell you they will pay you N1 today but give you 50 kobo eventually. If you don’t collect it, you lose everything. That’s what we suffer as footballers in Nigeria,” Olufemi added.

In this report,’TANA AIYEJINA takes a look at the plight of Nigerian players on the local scene, despite their huge potential.

That Nigerian football has followed the part of the country’s economy—always running cap in hand to the West despite its huge human talent—hasn’t come as a surprise to close followers of the game.

With an enormous pool of players scattered all over Europe, the United States of America and other parts of the world, there are even suggestions that footballers could soon overtake crude oil as the country’s major export product.

But behind this brain drain to the West is the harsh economic suffering that has befallen most players in the Nigerian Professional Football League.

Besides playing on bad pitches and insecure match venues, they are frequently owed sign-on fees and salaries, are underpaid in some cases and lack proper medical care and insurance like it’s done in the western world. Unlike in the 1980s and 1990s when players blossomed on the domestic front before moving abroad, the anguish experienced by these players make them want to jump at any offer outside the shores of the country, just to live better lives.

Due to the persistent owing of players’ salaries last season — the likes of FC IfeanyiUbah, ABS, Sunshine Stars, Gombe United, at some point reportedly owed their players up to five months salaries — some of the country’s finest talents were reportedly forced to grab deals in obscure leagues abroad.

Former Sunshine Stars striker Okiki Afolabi snubbed Nigerian champions Plateau United for newly-promoted Ethiopian league side Jimma Aba Jifar after earlier efforts to seal deals in Argentina, Turkey and Malaysia failed.

Exciting former Nigeria U-23 winger Daniel Etor completed an eight-month deal with Omani club Al Nasr in August.

Etor, who had featured for top Nigerian club Enyimba, was Enugu Rangers’ leading scorer with eight goals last season but he evoked a clause in his contract with the Flying Antelopes to seal a move to Al Nasr.

“I am grateful to God for making it possible for me to now play outside Nigeria. I will work hard that before the end of my eight months in Oman I would have moved to Europe. That’s my target,” Etor, whose earlier move to Iran failed, said.

Big striker Bobby Clement shrugged a FIFA ban on Kuwait due to political interference, to sign a deal with one of the country’s top clubs, Al Arabi, from Rangers.

Clement’s goals helped Rangers to a historic first NPFL title in 32 years in 2016 and was previously linked with a move to an Egyptian club, who were reportedly willing to offer $300,000 for his services, but he couldn’t wait, and instead joined the Kuwaiti club in search of greener pastures.

The above instances are the few fortunate cases of the players. Most of them, who hardly have the educational qualifications to do other jobs, haven’t been that fortunate to earn a deal abroad and have had to grope with the harsh economic conditions back home. And they are barred from disclosing their plight in the media by the club officials.

Former Ikorodu United central defender Gbenga Okoro has been without a club since he left the Oga Boys due to an illness two seasons ago.

The 29-year-old told our correspondent that life has not been easy with him since he had no savings to fall back on despite playing for a number of high-profile clubs on the domestic scene.

He said oftentimes, clubs don’t pay players the amount they pledged to pay, adding that officials force the players to forfeit what they are owed or they won’t be released to other clubs.

Okoro added that players were also made to forfeit their sign-on fees and match bonuses sometimes in millions of naira, in exchange for clearance papers to continue their careers elsewhere.

He stated, “The truth is that all the clubs owe players. Sometimes, some of the club officials negotiate well with the players and later reduce the money when they pay you the salaries. I once asked why I was paid less than I negotiated at one of my former clubs and I was told, ‘that is what is available for now.’

“Most players forfeit the money owed them in order to collect their (transfer) papers, so that when they want to leave the club, they will use it (papers) to collect their clearance and avoid any delays or gimmicks from the clubs indebted to them.”

He narrates his personal experience, saying he had to give out ‘loan’ to a former club before he was allowed to move to a new club, despite being owed. ‘Loan’ according to Okoro is language used to describe when a player forfeits money owed him by his club.

“I have been a victim. It happened to me when I moved from 3SC to El Kanemi; I gave them a loan and at the end of the season, I was able to move to Kwara United.

When you want to leave for another club, they (officials) normally put a huge sum of money on the players despite owing them salaries and sign-on fees. But if you give them the loan, you are allowed to leave without problems,” Okoro added.

The Ikoyi cash scandal

Once the N13bn cash stashed away in an apartment at Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos was uncovered in April this year by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the usually dour face of the then Director General of the NIA, Ayo Oke, became crestfallen.

Oke and his better half were accused of appropriating state funds to themselves under the guise of surveillance operations.

It took the Federal Government several weeks to take a firm decision on whether to retain the spy boss or fire him. During that period, the Senate probe had however indicted him.

Adding a twist to the scandal, Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, had claimed that the money discovered belonged to his state, accusing his predecessor, Rotimi Amaechi, of keeping the money in the apartment.

It took President Muhammadu Buhari several months to reach a conclusion on the matter – first, a panel headed by Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo was set up, then a report was submitted to Buhari, and eventually in December, the President did what many considered the needful.

Oke was given the boot. His sacking was said to have been recommended by the Osinbajo panel.

Buhari pledged to Nigerians that Oke and all those found culpable in the case of the large amounts of foreign and local currencies recovered by the anti-graft agency would be sanctioned.



The grass-cutting scandal

Until April this year, when the then embattled Secretary to Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, was suspended, it appeared he had got away with the allegation of fraudulently enriching himself. His continued stay in office became a moral burden that President Muhammadu Buhari could no longer bear.

Despite Lawal’s suspension, he continued to irk the public, especially when he refused to appear before the Senate probing the grass-cutting contracts said to have been awarded to his own company.

According to the final report of the Senate, the bank transactions of “Rholavision Engineering Limited and the confirmation by the Central Bank of Nigeria that the Bank Verification Number shows that Babachir David Lawal is still the signatory to Rholavision Engineering Limited accounts and 13 other accounts, some with different names.”

This led to the Senate committee to conclude that he should be prosecuted because he had interests in Rholavision Engineering Limited.

Only in October was Buhari’s hand forced to push out the suspended SGF by sacking him based on the recommendation of the Osinbajo panel that investigated the scandal.

In Lawal’s place, Buhari appointed Boss Mustapha as the new SGF.

Alison-Madueke’s mansions

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, in February, said it discovered that a former petroleum minister, Diezani Alison-Madueke, allegedly owned an $18m mansion located in the Asokoro area of Abuja, with furnishings and a bullet-proof gym estimated at $2m.

The anti-graft agency, also in February, released pictures of another Lagos mansion, valued at $37.5m (N11.75bn) allegedly owned by Alison-Madueke.

A Federal High Court sitting in Lagos, in August, ordered that the skyscraper building on Banana Island, in Lagos, be finally forfeited to the Federal Government.

Justice Chuka Obiozor also ordered that the $2,740,197.96 and N84,537,840.70 realised as rents on the property should be forfeited to the Federal Government.

The funds were said to have been found in Zenith Bank account number 1013612486.

The anti-graft agency had on July 19, obtained a court order to temporarily seize the property located at Building 3, Block B, Bella Vista Plot 1, Zone N, Federal Government Layout, Banana Island Foreshore Estate, which is said to have 24 apartments, 18 flats and six penthouses.



Bello’s double registration saga

The Independent National Electoral commission, in May, affirmed that the Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello, registered twice as a voter.

The Chairman, Information and Voter Education Committee, INEC, Mr. Solomon Soyebi, who is also a national commissioner at the agency, said the governor first registered in Abuja in January, 2011 and subsequently in May in Lokoja.

The agency, after an intensive investigation, dismissed two officials on December 14 for their alleged roles in the electoral scandal involving Bello.

The governor, who is being accused of double voter registration, cannot be prosecuted because he enjoys constitutional immunity.

Bello, however, threatened to take legal action against INEC if the agency failed to produce convincing proof that he was registered twice. The governor, who featured on an African Independent Television programme last week, displayed travel documents to show that he was not in the country on the day that he allegedly carried out the second registration exercise.

Maina’s reinstatement

The sacked chairman of the defunct Presidential Task Force on Pension Reforms, Abdulrasheed Maina, is no stranger to controversy.

In 2013, Maina was declared wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

The EFCC website says, “Dark-complexioned Maina is allegedly complicit in the over N2bn Pensions Biometric Scam in the office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation. He remains at large, after charges were filed against his accomplices.”

Despite the allegations against the sacked pension reforms boss, the Minister of Interior, Abdulrahman Dambazau, on October 22, confirmed his reinstatement.

Confirming Maina’s recall, Dambazau, in a statement by his press secretary, Ehisienmen Osaigbovo, said the accused had been placed in charge of the Human Resources Department of the ministry.

The minister laid the blame for Maina’s recall at the feet of the Head of Service of the Federation and the Federal Civil Service Commission. Both have since denied the allegation.



Ibori’s return

It’s not every day an ex-convict is greeted with a hero’s welcome.

On February 4, however, Delta State all but shut down to celebrate the return of former Governor James Ibori, who was released from UK prison in December 2016 after serving four years and eight months of his sentence.

Ibori has since appealed the April 17, 2012 judgment by a Southwark Crown court, which sentenced the ex-governor to 13 years in prison after he pleaded guilty to 10 counts of money laundering and stealing $250m from the treasury.

Upon his arrival in Nigeria at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, throngs of family members and well-wishers received the former governor, as airport security officials and some staff of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria exchanged pleasantries with him.

He was immediately transported to Oghara, his hometown, where he was greeted by a mammoth crowd.

Following his return, the ex-governor has regained influential status in the Peoples Democratic Party, where he held sway as a member of the planning committee of the opposition party’s just concluded national convention. He also continues to wield ‘kingmaker’ powers in Delta State, reiterating on November 12 his support for Governor Ifeanyi Okowa’s re-election in 2019.

Ibori still has 170 charges against him pending before a Federal High Court, according to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.



DSS recruitment saga

The Department of State Services was enmeshed in a recruitment scandal sometime in April.

The DSS, on March 5, commissioned 479 cadet officers after their passing-out parade in Lagos, which was attended by the Director General of the agency, Lawal Daura, and the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Abubakar Sadique.

The listing of the officers revealed wide disparity in the numbers of slots allocated to the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

It was not clear what criteria were used in the composition of the final list.

Based on the breakdown, the North-West got 165 officers, the North-East 100, the North-Central 66, the South-West 57, the South-East 44, and the South-South 42.

This showed that 331 officers were from the 19 northern states and the FCT.

Katsina State, the home of President Muhammadu Buhari and the DSS boss, got 51 slots, surpassing the 44 officers picked from all the South-East states.

The Presidency, in an unsigned statement discreetly distributed to select journalists, said the secret police deliberately employed fewer southerners to correct previous “inequity” against the northern part of the country.

Patience Jonathan’s 16 bank accounts

Regarded as Nigeria’s feistiest – past or present – first lady, the wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, Patience, has refused to exit the limelight following her infamous ‘diarisgod’ refrain in the wake of the Chibok girls’ kidnap by Boko Haram. The legal fireworks between her and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission that spilled into 2017 from 2016 were tentatively resolved in December when the Federal High Court in Abuja reversed its order made on May 30, to freeze Mrs. Jonathan’s 16 bank accounts.

Last month, the Federal High Court in Lagos froze the sum of N350m found in the Stanbic IBTC Bank account of a company, AM-PM Global Network Limited, said to have links with Mrs. Jonathan. The EFCC had claimed that the N350m was part of a sum of N1,206,950,000, being proceeds of ex-first lady’s ‘unlawful enrichment’ kept in the company’s Diamond Bank account.




Melaye’s certificate scandal

Few lawmakers, apart from Bukola Saraki, Abdulmumin Jibrin and Alli Ndume, have courted more controversies than Dino Melaye in the National Assembly.

The senator was involved in a certificate scandal that many thought would prove to be his last straw until the management of the Ahmadu Bello University came to his rescue by sending its vice chancellor to show the Senate proofs that the lawmaker graduated from the school.

Melaye, a one-time anti-corruption activist was accused by an online news medium,Sahara Reporters of not graduating from ABU. One of his colleagues, Senator Ali Ndume – who eventually was sent on suspension by the Senate – called for the upper legislative chamber to probe Melaye for forgery and perjury.

Melaye had the last laugh though he might not lay as much claim to being a graduate of Harvard University and the London School of Economics and Political Science as he did with being an ABU graduate because the two foreign institutions denied his claims of taking their degree courses.



Kachikwu’s leaked memo, fuel scarcity

If the emergence of Ibe Kachikwu, first as the Group Managing Director of the NNPC and later as the Minister of State Petroleum Resources was greeted with optimism, his leaked memo to President Muhammadu Buhari and current fuel scarcity across the nation have left not a few Nigerians to view him with scepticism and pessimism.

Kachikwu, had, in the leaked memo to the President, accused the incumbent GMD of NNPC, Maikanti Baru, of insubordination, alleging that against the rules, Baru awarded major contracts worth $25bn without reviewing or discussing them with him or the NNPC board.

But in the end, Buhari and Baru said Kachikwu had only cried wolf.

The ‘Perfect score’ lady

In 2013, the news broke that a 17-year-old girl from Osogbo, Osun State, Folafoluwa Oginni, had emerged number one out of thousands of other students who sat the 2012 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination.

Oginni, who beat two other girls by having a perfect score in all her eight subjects that year, was not done.

She proved that that feat four years ago, was not a fluke when she hit the headline once again in August that she had broken the University of Hertfordshire, UK record for the perfect score of 5.0.

At 21, Oginni aced her law degree with A’s in all the courses and went on to be the first Nigerian valedictorian in the university.

Questions have arisen about whether some of these women, who are lifting the flag of Nigeria high abroad deserve a similar recognition in their country.

But a public analyst, Mr. Dega Akeem, said they do, but that the step was unlikely considering the fact the country is more concerned about “villain-worshipping than hero-worshipping”.

According to him, for every good deed that is honoured, a generation coming behind “graduates” from a materialistic one to a service-focused one.”

He said, “The truth is that there are a lot of Nigerians doing extraordinary things abroad.

When you honour some of them, you not only make them proud of their country, you also show people looking up to them that their feats are honourable.

“I followed Nigeria’s bobsleigh team and realised that they even raised money by themselves to get into the competition. What has happened since they did the country proud ? A country is only as good as how it treats its heroes.”

A sociologist, Dr. Jibril Adeniyi, also corroborated Akeem’s opinion.

According to him, when a country takes extra-ordinary achievements seriously without recourse to the pedigree of the individual, it is ripe for the development.

“You cannot stop the age-long brain-drain in the country by overlooking people who have made the country proud abroad. I believe that the state governments these individuals belong to owe the younger generation the service of honouring people like these,” he said.

The Para Champion

A few weeks ago, Alice Oluwafemiayo lifted a weight of 145kg and smashed the women’s +86kg world record in Mexico on the first day of the World Para Powerlifting Championships. With that achievement, she writes her name in the sands of time.

It was a record previously held by compatriot, Loveline Obiji, who lifted 144kg in 2014. The fact that Oluwafemiayo achieved the feat in her fourth attempt did nothing to dampen the enormity of the achievement. “I feel very happy, it was not something I was expecting,” she had said.

Trailing her were China´s Feifei Zheng, who lifted 130kg, and Egypt´s Geehan Hassan who took the third place with a weight of 125kg.



The lawyer who won Queen Elizabeth’s heart

A multiple-award-winning solicitor, Olufunke Abimbola-Akindolie, put a prestigious feather in her cap a few weeks ago when she was awarded the Member of the Order of the British Empire by Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

The lawyer joined a short list of Nigerians who have been so honoured when she became an honouree of the British Queen for “her contribution to the diversification of the legal profession.”

Abimbola-Akindolie is said to be the most senior black lawyer working within the UK pharmaceutical industry and one of the most senior globally. She dedicates a part of her time fighting for diversity in the UK and beyond, an endeavour that has attracted a number of awards and honours from different parts of the world.

She is the general counsel and head of financial compliance at Roche UK, a company she joined in 2012.

The ‘Pepper seller’ PhD record breaker

The story of Adeola Olubamiji stole the hearts of many when it hit the news a few months ago.

It’s one of the most inspiring stories to come out of the year.
Olubamiji, who become the first black person to obtain a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, drew nationwide accolades when the achievement made headlines in the country.

The academic feat alone was not what drew admiration but her grass-to-grace story.
In her own account which she shared on her graduation, she said that as the fifth and last child of a mother who “was a farmer and a father who had little”, she hawked pepper on the streets of Ibadan, Oyo State as early as 10 to help her mother. “I always had to wait for my turn. I was the last, a girl child and raised by a mother who’s a farmer.”

Olubamiji said, “Because I had a 2.1 (in Physics at the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ogun State), it opened doors for me to proceed to Finland for a Master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering. During this Master’s degree, I worked part-time as a cleaner and I continued the job after my Master’s degree as well.

“Out of determination, I applied to over 100 schools for my PhD and finally got a full three-year scholarship (later extended to four years) at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, to pursue a PhD in Biomedical Engineering.

“While in that PhD programme, I worked part-time as a makeup artist, teaching assistant. I also braided hair and fixed weaves to make extra money.”

All over the world, Nigerian women have been blazing the trails in different fields of endeavour, raising the country’s flag high and challenging those behind to aspire to the stars.

Nigeria’s bobsleigh team

For the first time ever, a Nigeria team of three delectable ladies made history for being the first ever African team to participate in the Winter Olympics.

The trio of Seun Adigun (30), Ngozi Onwumere (25) and Akuoma Omeoga (25) shone like stars after successfully completing five races in the 2018 Winter Olympics. Before them, bobsleigh was as alien to Nigeria as snow on which it takes place is.

It was never an easy feat for these ladies. Adigun, who is the driver of the team, had to launch a Go Fund Me campaign to raise funds which would make their dream of competing in the tournament possible. It was a $75,000 target which she achieved in 11 months.

And with this, they entered the history books in Nigeria and Africa.

They will now compete in Pyeongchang, South Korea in February 2018.

Multiple media reports have described them as both beauty and brains. The reason is not so far-fetched. Adigun, who represents Surulere, Lagos, combines her love for the sport with a combined academic study for a Doctorate of Chiropractic from Texas Chiropractic College and a Master of Science in Exercise & Health Science from the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Onwumere, representing Imo State, is an established athlete with a gold medal to her credit from the 2015 All African Games. She is also a PhD student.

Omeoga , on the other hand, is a collegiate track and field athlete and a graduate of the University of Minnesota. She is representing Umuahia, Abia State on the team.

An elderly couple allegedly caught with 60 pounds of marijuana in Nebraska, United States told police their stash was for Christmas gifts.

The couple — Patrick Jiron, 80, and Barbara Jiron, 83 — were driving on their way from their home in Clearlake Oaks, California to Vermont when police officers from the York County Sheriff’s Department in the Cornhusker State stopped them for failing to use their turn signal.

When the officers stepped up to the Jirons’ Toyota Tacoma, they said they smelled a strong odour of marijuana and found boxes of pot in the pickup topper, according to theScottsbluff Star Herald.

“They said the marijuana was for Christmas presents,” said Lt. Paul Vrbka, adding that the estimated street value of the marijuana was $336,000 (N121m).

The octogenarian couple were charged with felony, suspicion of possession of marijuana with intent to deliver, and no drug tax stamp.

Italy will be sending 470 soldiers to Niger to help the West African nation stem the flow of Europe-bound migrants, Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni said Thursday.

Agadez, the main city in central Niger, has become a revolving door for economic migrants seeking to reach Europe via Libya, winning notoriety as Africa’s people-smuggling capital.

“We are going to Niger following a request by the government at the start of December to… reinforce the security measures in the territory and at the borders and to support the police force,” he said.

He said Niger was “the main transit country” in Africa for Europe-bound migrants, adding that it was also “perhaps the most willing to cooperate in this matter as it is a transit country,” and does not receive remittances from migrants settled abroad.

The soldiers being sent to Niger have mainly served in Iraq and Kuwait.

A first contingent of less than 200 is expected to leave early next year.

The troops will have two planes and 130 vehicles at their disposal, according to Italian media.

The Nigeria Football Federation on Wednesday said it had to play most national teams’ games outside the Abuja National Stadium due to a lack of facilities there.

NFF Secretary-General Mohammed Sanusi told theNews Agency of Nigeriathat the national stadium currently lacks the necessary facilities for the teams to play conveniently.

However, he said some states had indicated their interest in hosting the national teams.

NANreports that the women’s national teams have taken refuge at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, Benin, while the Super Eagles have been playing their matches at the Uyo Stadium.

Sanusi said, “Some of these states indicated their interest in hosting the teams and that is why we went there. The Abuja National Stadium is under renovation and so there is no facility for us to play our matches here.

“We have our technical centre here, but there are no dressing rooms. So we are making efforts to see if the dressing rooms can be provided.”

The secretary added that the football house was planning to take the matches of the teams across the country, so that Nigerians can watch their national teams play live.
