Nairaland / General / China Bans Burial, Seizes Coffins by Realsman405(m): 1:51pm On Aug 03, 2018
On August 3, 201812:53 pm

Wailing cries and impassioned tears met bulldozers and angry officials in the Chinese province of Jiangxi as a campaign to phase out burials found a very real face.

Aiming to reduce the space needed for graveyards and to discourage people from spending excessive amounts on ornate coffins, the Jiangxi has been pushing burial reform.

They are not the first to try this, with the unusual exercise being touted across China.

Jiangxi, however, took a rather heavy-handed approach.

Collecting all of the coffins in the region, including those already bought and paid for, the authorities set about destroying them. There were thousands in total.

Family members and the coffin’s planned future occupants were devastated after having saved for years to afford the hand-crafted caskets.

In video footage from the seizure, a woman is seen sobbing on the floor and an elderly man climbs into his coffin, and having to be forcibly removed by officials.

The authorities are pushing for people to favour cremation over the traditional burial to reach a target of having all dead be cremated by Sept 1.

But the burial process is steeped in tradition in China and convincing people to forego these rites can be difficult.

Authorities have been trying for decades to move people away from ground burials as China’s population boomed to now 1.4 billion.

Travel / FG Evacuates 230 Stranded Nigerians In Russia, Friday by Realsman405(m): 11:29pm On Jul 19, 2018
On July 19, 201810:50 pm

Abuja – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has said that Nigerians stranded in Moscow, Russia at the end of the 2018 World Cup Tournament would be evacuated on Friday.

The Ministry’s Spokesperson, Dr Tope Elias-Fatile, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja said over 230 stranded Nigerians had been cleared to board an Ethiopian Airline flight to Abuja on Friday.

He said that the development was sequel to Mr President’s directive that stranded Nigerians in Russia be evacuated with immediate effect.

According to him, the Ministry and Nigerian mission in Moscow in collaboration with the Ministry of Aviation have been monitoring the process of the evacuation.

”As at the last count, over 230 stranded Nigerians had been cleared to board an Ethiopian Airline flight to Abuja.

”The aircraft would depart Domodedovo Airport in Moscow with the stranded Nigerians at 08.30 hours Friday, July, 20th and arrive Abuja at 16.00 hours same day,” he said.

He noted that over 150 stranded Nigerians were among the fans who travelled to the Russian Federation for the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament that besieged the Embassy of Nigeria in Moscow on July 12th.

The fans according to him, were stranded after the events due to lack of funds for their upkeep as well as allegation that some airline travel agents cancelled return tickets of their customers without their knowledge.

”Consequently, the Mission submitted a formal complaint to host authorities against the airlines that brought the stranded Nigerians to the Russian Federation.

”The Mission also made arrangements for the feeding and accommodation of the stranded Nigerians in hostels around Moscow,” he said.

He noted that President Mohammadu Buhari had on July 16 directed the Ministers of Foreign Affairs and Aviation to evacuate the Nigerians to Abuja immediately.

Fatile said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs would continue to monitor the evacuation process and keep the public informed. (NAN)

Autos / FG Bans Importation Of 10-Year-Old Haulage Vehicles by Realsman405(m): 7:03am On Jul 19, 2018
On July 19, 20185:52 am
By Godwin Oritse

The Federal Government has placed a ban on importation of haulage vehicles that are 10 years and above old from the date of manufacture. The ban is expected to take effect from 1st of January 2020.

Vanguard learnt that the measure was one of the resolutions of the stakeholders’ forum organised by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Boss Mustapha, for haulage operators following the recent road traffic inferno on Otedola Bridge in Lagos where over many lives and properties were lost.

The communiqué issued at the end of the meeting directed that mandatory certification of all haulage vehicles will now be carried out twice in 12 months.

According to the communiqué which was signed by Mustapha, the Federal Government will also work closely with the Bank of Industry (BOI) and other financial institutions towards the establishment of a Fleet Acquisition Renewal Scheme for haulage operators.

Other resolution of the meeting was that: “Standard speed limiters must be installed in all haulage vehicles in Nigeria, and that “tankers without safety valves and the required number plates will henceforth be disallowed from loading”.

The meeting also agreed that: Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and other relevant agencies should immediately harmonize operating safety requirements at all tank farms”, even as it was agreed that “periodic checks of haulage vehicles must be carried out at relevant loading points”.

The communiqué also stated that, “payment of National Transportation Allowance (NTA) and bridging claims to tanker operators will henceforth be contingent on compliance to minimum safety standards” and that, henceforth “single operators of haulage vehicles must be duly registered with National Association of Road Transport Owners ( NARTO ) and comply with RTSSS provisions”.

Sports / World Cup 2018: FIFA To Pay Super Eagles £6.1 Million After Crashing Out by Realsman405(m): 1:38pm On Jun 29, 2018
PublishedonJune 29, 2018
By John Owen Nwachukwu

The Super Eagles of Nigeria and other teams that crashed out on the group stages of the 2018 World Cup will be paid only £6.1 million each by the football governing body, FIFA.

Nigeria would have received £9.1 million if the match against Argentina ended in their favour.

This is because any team eliminated from the round of 16 stage will receive £9.1million.
The World Cup winning team will receive £28 million in prize money from FIFA, with 2nd, 3rd and 4th place teams receiving £21million, £18million and £16million respectively.

This means that for the World Cup winners, each player in the 23 man squad would pocket £1.2million.

The 32 teams were also given £1.1million each to prepare for the tournament.

Health / Zimbabwe Legalises Cannabis by Realsman405(m): 12:35pm On Apr 28, 2018
Zimbabwe has legalised production of cannabis for medicinal or scientific use, according to new regulations seen by AFP Saturday.

A statutory instrument entitled Production of Cannabis for Medicinal and Scientific Use Regulations, said prospective producers can apply to the health ministry for a licence to grow cannabis but under strict conditions.

“An application shall be accompanied by the appropriate fee and three copies of a plan of the site proposed to be licensed,” read part of the regulations.

Individual producers must be citizens of the country or have proof that they are resident while companies must produce proof of incorporation in Zimbabwe, the regulations said.

The producers will submit to routine audits by the health ministry.

“The application shall contain, the maximum quantity expressed as net weight in grammes, of fresh cannabis, dried cannabis, cannabis oil to be produced by the applicant under the licence and the production period and the maximum number of cannabis plants to be sold or provided.”

The licence is valid for five years and should be renewed, if necessary, before expiry.

Producers intending to “possess, produce, sell, provide, ship, deliver, transport or deliver cannabis at more than one site” will require a separate licence.

Production and use of cannabis was illegal in Zimbabwe although the herb is widely used in traditional medicine to treat conditions like asthma, epilepsy and mental illness while some people use it as recreational drug and, supposedly, to make their hair grow quicker.

Production or possession of large quantities of cannabis attracted up to 12 years in jail.

Family / "My Wife’s Beauty Makes Me Sleepless, I Want A Divorce" - Zimbabwea Man To Judge by Realsman405(m): 3:56pm On Apr 27, 2018
A heartbroken man left the court in tears as he deposed that he didn’t want his wife, Hilda Mleya, 30, anymore because she was too beautiful.

The incident took place at Chief Chireya’s court in Gokwe, Zimbabwe.

Arnold Masuka, 40, the complainant made his sensational claims before Chief Chireya.

It is reported that Masuka was divorcing his wife because of her beauty which was giving him sleepless nights.

The situation had got so bad he was afraid of going to work or leaving her alone as he feared she would attract other men.

Chief Chireya asked Masuka if he had really made up his mind to divorce his wife and abandon his own young children who are currently still in school.

The Chief urged the couple to continue staying together as husband and wife, but Masuka told the court that their marriage had ended, even before the case started.

Jobs/Vacancies / Twenty Million People Apply For 100,000 Railway Jobs by Realsman405(m): 5:32pm On Mar 27, 2018
India's state-run railways have received more than 20 million applicants for about 100,000 jobs, a railway ministry official has said.

The number of applicants is expected to rise further as the deadline for applications will end on Saturday, the official told Press Trust of India.

Online tests will be held for jobs in the railway police, locomotive drivers and technicians in 15 languages.

Unemployment is a huge challenge in India where millions are out of work.

Officials say they are overwhelmed by the response to the medium and low-level jobs.

"A lot of applicants are overqualified and even PhD holders are applying for the technicians job," a railway official was quoted by the Economic Times newspaper as saying.

The Press Trust of India news agency reported that more than five million people had applied online for the positions of technicians and locomotive drivers alone.

India has one of the largest railway networks in the world, used by around 23 million passengers daily. Built mostly under British colonial rule, the railway network is the backbone of public transport.

With more than a million workers, India's railways is also one of the world's largest employers.

Government recruitment drives have attracted massive responses in other parts of India, too.

In 2015, authorities in India's most populous state, Uttar Pradesh, received 2.3 million applications for 368 low-level government jobs.

During the same year, several people were injured in a stampede when thousands turned up to join the Indian army in the southern city of Visakhapatnam.

In 2010, one man was killed and 11 others were injured in the crush when more than 10,000 candidates gathered to join the police in Mumbai.

And in 1999, the government in West Bengal state was deluged with responses when they advertised 281 jobs and received nearly one million applications.

Crime / Policeman Kills Soldier During Argument In Delta by Realsman405(m): 6:14am On Mar 20, 2018
Published March 20, 2018
Theophilus Onojeghen, Warri

An unidentified mobile policeman guarding an oil facility operated by Shell Petroleum Development Company has reportedly shot dead a soldier in Odimodi community, in the Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State.

PUNCH Metrogathered that the incident occurred on Saturday during a misunderstanding between the two men.

A credible community source, who confirmed the incident, said he could not tell what led to the argument.

He noted that witnesses had seen the two security men engage in a fierce exchange of words.

Other members of the team were said to have gone on a patrol of oil facilities in the area at the time.

He said the argument was followed by multiple gunshots a few minutes later.

The source explained that the policeman, after killing the victim, shot continuously into the air to scare away residents before absconding with the victim’s rifle.

It was gathered that operatives of the Joint Task Force,Operation Delta Safe, later sent some of its men to remove the corpse from the scene.

A community leader, who did not want to be identified, said the development had created tension among residents, adding that there was fear that the military might invade the community to search for the fleeing policeman.

He said, “The incident happened on Saturday at noon. The two officers – a mopol and the military officer – were members of a combined security team stationed to guard oil facilities in Odimodi community. They had a misunderstanding. After a while, we heard gunshots.

“When people got there, they discovered that the mobile policeman had killed the soldier. The policeman cocked his gun and fired at the soldier and thereafter shot to scare people away from the scene.

“He (policeman) took the soldier’s gun and ran away. As of now, he has not been apprehended. The JTF authorities have removed the corpse of the slain soldier. There is tension in the community as we speak. People are afraid that the military may invade the community.”

Another source said residents had no hand in the killing, adding that the community leadership was ready to collaborate with security agencies to fish out the culprit if he was still in the area.

The spokesperson for Operation Delta Safe, Major Ibrahim Abdullahi, said he was not aware of the incident.

He said, “I don’t know your source and I’m not aware of anything like that.”

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, promised to react after speaking to the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area.

He had yet to get back as of press time.

However, an operative of the Department of State Services confirmed the incident, adding that efforts were being made to apprehend the killer cop.

Health / Abuse: Ban Codeine Syrup, Tambuwal Urges FG by Realsman405(m): 5:52am On Mar 20, 2018
By Rakiya A.Muhammad, Sokoto | Publish Date: Mar 20 2018 2:00AM

A consultant psychiatrist at the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital, Sokoto, Dr. Abdulfatai Bakari yesterday called for decisive measures to curb rising cases of addiction particularly among married women in Sokoto and other northern states.

This is just as Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal urged the Federal Government to ban the sale of codeine syrup in the country.

They spoke at a workshop on Addiction and Prevention held at the Sultan Maccido Institute of Quran and General Studies, Sokoto.

“It is very worrisome that in Sokoto and some northern states, many married women are addicted to various substances especially codeine, tutolin, cannabis and Sheehan,” Bakari said, adding that the trend was not only with married women but with adolescent females, and that many undergraduates in some tertiary institutions in the state had dropped out of school because of addiction to drugs.

Speaking, Governor Aminu Tambuwal, who was represented by the state Commissioner of Health, Dr. Balarabe Kakale, said, “The Federal Government should ban the sale of codeine in Nigeria because they are not life saving drugs.”

The Chairman, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Col. Muhammad Abdullah, decried the negative impact of drug abuse on the society.

Abdullah who was represented by the Commander of NDLEA, Sokoto Command, Mr. Misbahu Idris, urged all stakeholders to enhance efforts towards tackling the menace.

Family / 'I Fall Ill Because My Husband Starves Me Of Sex' - Sex Starved Housewife by Realsman405(m): 6:15pm On Mar 19, 2018
After five years of marriage, a 35 -year-old businesswoman, Mrs Bilikisu Azeez, on Monday approached an Igando Customary Court in a Lagos to dissolve her sexless marriage.

“Please dissolve this union so that I can move on with my life, my body is not wood or stone,” the sex-starved wife opened up in court.

She told the court that her husband, Olusesi Azeez, starved her of sex for more than two years, a development which, she said, had affected her health.

“My husband has been starving me of sex since he married his youngest wife, he has turned me to an abandoned property.

“I have been falling sick in and out of hospital, during my last visit to the hospital, I was told that it was because I have had sex for long that is why I experience frequent sickness.”

She also accused her husband of not caring for her and the only child of the marriage, saying “my husband does not take care of me, I feed and clothe myself.

“He refused to enroll our only child, who is over four years old in school and has failed to pay his medical bills; I always run to my mother for the hospital bill.”

Bilikisu, who also accused her husband of battery, said he had beaten her publicly which resulted in her fainting.

According to her, the trouble started when her husband brought in the third wife.

She continued: “There was joy, love and peace in the house until he came with another wife, who has been fighting me also.”

Olusesi, in his response to the allegations, accepted that he starved the woman of sex.

“She once denied me of sex and since then I abandoned her.

“Yes, I starved her of sex, it is tit for tat because there was a day I entered her room to sleep with her and she left the bed to sleep on the floor.

“I made an attempt eight times to sleep with her, but she refused. So since that day, I just put her aside after all she is not the only wife I have,” he told the court.

The 45-year-old building contractor, however, agreed to the dissolution of the marriage, asking the court to grant his wife’s request.

“I am no longer interested in the marriage.”

The court’s President, Mr Akin Akinniyi, after listening to the estranged couple, advised them to explore a possible reconciliation of the crisis.

He adjourned the case until April 12 for judgment.(NAN)

Foreign Affairs / Gambia Will Collapse Without Nigerian Professionals – Gambia Vice President by Realsman405(m): 11:58am On Mar 16, 2018
Published March 16, 2018

The Vice-President of The Gambia, Mrs Fatoumata Tambajang, has said that The Gambia would ‘collapse’ if Nigerian professionals in the country withdraw their services or leave the country.

Tambajang made the remark at a dinner organised for the Nigerian delegation to the 62nd Commission on the Status of Women at the Nigeria House, New York, on Thursday night.

The vice-president, who was represented by Dr Mamadou Tangara, the Ambassador/Permanent Representative of The Gambia to the UN, commended Nigeria for its numerous support to her country.

She said, Gambia is very grateful to Nigeria for its support. If Nigeria withdraws its support, Gambia will collapse.

“In particular, if the Nigerian professionals in the judiciary withdraw, Gambia’s judiciary will collapse”.

Nigeria led regional efforts to force out former President Yahya Jammeh in 2017 after he reneged on his earlier pledge to handover to President Adama Barrow.

At about 30,000 strong, Nigeria also has by far the largest population of foreign nationals living in The Gambia.

Similarly, six of Gambia’s 12 banks are owned by Nigerians.

Nigerian Emmanuel Ayoola was the Chief Justice of The Gambia from 1983 to 1992 while Emmanuel Fagbenle was the Chief Justice of the country from 2015 to 2017.

Before then, both had earlier served as Justices of the Court of Appeal of the Gambia.

The majority of the senior professional staff in the Ministry of Justice on the other hand are Nigerian lawyers provided through technical assistance programme.

In 2017, The Gambia Bar Association had to protest against the newly appointed Nigerian High Court judges – Justices Edward Ogar, Mathias Agboola, Simeon Abi and Matins Okoi.

Nigerian professionals, including teachers and doctors, are in the Gambia under the Technical Aids Corps scheme, launched by the Nigerian government to assist other African countries, as a practical demonstration of South-South cooperation.

The event was attended by Ms Amina Mohammed, UN Deputy Secretary-General, Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Aisha Al-Hassan and Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Professor Tijjani Bande.

Others were Ms Hajo Sani, Senior Special Assistant to the Wife of the President, the Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Amb. Samson Itegboje, Permanent Representatives of Angola and Uganda to the UN, wives of Governors, commissioners and the civil society organisations.

Sports / Return Of The King: Majestic Messi Puts Chelsea To The Sword! by Realsman405(m): 11:36pm On Mar 14, 2018
Mar 14, 2018 22:43:50

The Argentine attacker produced yet another exhibition of his fantasy football to sweep aside the Blues on a night he totally dominated at Camp Nou.

The banner before the match said it all. "God save the King!" read an enormous tifo unfurled by Barcelona fans ahead of their Champions League last-16 second leg clash against Chelsea. And as the game started, the King duly delivered.

Messi had pulled out of Barca's trip to Malaga in La Liga on Saturday to be present at the birth of his third son, Ciro, but he was back in the starting line-up for this all-important fixture and the supporters were clearly pleased to see him.

Ahead of these two teams' first meeting at Stamford Bridge in February, much of the talk had centred around Messi and how he had never scored against Chelsea.

A late leveller to cancel out Willian's strike put paid to that, however, and the Argentine was clearly in the mood for more here.

Barca have been the best team in Spain over the past few years, yet the Blaugrana have seen their fierce rivals Real Madrid dominate in Europe by winning three of the last four Champions League titles.

Los Blancos were already through to the quarter-finals of the competition after making light work of Paris Saint-Germain and on Wednesday night, Messi made sure Barca will also be in the hat for Friday's draw.

It took him just over two minutes to influence proceedings as he found space on the right and drilled a low shot through the legs of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to make it 1-0 on the night and 2-1 on aggregate.

And later in a first half in which Chelsea caused Barca quite a few problems, the Argentine embarked on one of those remarkable runs of his, taking on three players and dragging defenders in his direction before squaring for Ousmane Dembele to blast home his first goal for the Catalan club.

Messi's first two touches in the opposition area had been a goal and an assist. It was as devastating as it was brilliant and although Marcos Alonso hit the post with a free-kick in first half stoppage time, the Blues looked shell-shocked.

Chelsea started the second period positively and Barca boss Ernesto Valverde was an animated figure as he barked instructions to his players, with Alonso again a threat for the visitors.

But he need not have worried. Because Messi, who was being watched by Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli, raced into the area after 63 minutes and again found the gap between Courtois' legs, this time with a powerful left-footed drive, to score his 100th Champions League goal.

It was also his sixth in this season's competition after something of a slow start in the group stages. Here he was, back at his breathtaking best when it mattered most to destroy a team renowned for their defensive discipline.

"It is what we always say: he is a player who makes the difference," Andres Iniesta said afterwards tobeIn Sportswith typical understatement. "It is a blessing that he is with us."

Indeed it is. After a short absence at the weekend, the King has returned for Barcelona – and he has his eyes firmly fixed on another Champions League crown this season.

Sports / Greek Derby Postponed As Angry PAOK Owner Storms Pitch With Gun by Realsman405(m): 6:52am On Mar 12, 2018
Ivan Savvidis disrupted Sunday's Super League match with AEK after not agreeing with the disallowing of a goal.

The Greek Super League match between PAOK and AEK Athens was postponed on Sunday after the former's owner, who appeared to be armed with a gun, and his entourage stormed the pitch following the disallowing of a late goal.

PAOK thought they had secured a last-gasp win with an 89th-minute effort, only for the referee to alter his decision following the protestations of AEK players.

The goal was ultimately disallowed, meaning PAOK were unable to usurp their rivals at the top of the table.

That sparked angry scenes in the stands and numerous people entered the pitch, including PAOK owner Ivan Savvidis and his security detail.

Savvidis, who appeared to usher his players off the pitch, confronted referee Giorgios Kominis and was then led away by his security.

He then had to be restrained as he appeared to aim some angry words towards one of the match officials.

The match was postponed after the referee went down the tunnel.

Although the officials re-emerged later, PAOK claimed on Twitter the game "was finally halted with the score 1-0" in favour of the home side, despite the late goal initially seeming to be disallowed.

AEK coach Manolo Jimenez appeared to confirm PAOK had been handed the 1-0 win, while the former Sevilla boss also heard claims Savvidis entered the pitch armed with a gun.

"Right now we are leaving the stadium escorted by the police," Jimenez is quoted as saying by Onda Cero.

"The referee has invalidated the goal of PAOK for offside, there was a brawl of players and many people entered the field, including their president with bodyguards.

"After the invasion, the referee has gone inside and after two hours wanted to resume. We said no. The shame is that in the end the referee has given them the goal, after all that has happened.

"We learned later that the president had a gun, we did not see it there on the pitch."

It is the second time in less than two months that PAOK's Toumba Stadium has been the setting of disturbances.

Earlier in the day, PAOK had a stadium ban and a three-point deduction revoked following an incident against Olympiacos on February 25.

Olympiacos coach Oscar Garcia had been hit on the head by a roll of paper thrown from the stands, with his injury requiring a trip to hospital.

Food / Re: Thailand Blames Nigeria For Collapsing Its Rice Mills by Realsman405(m): 10:39pm On Mar 02, 2018
According to the minister, the ambassador lamented that the collapse of the rice mills has increased the unemployment rate in his country from 1.2 per cent to 4 per cent.

“Just like two weeks ago, the Ambassador of Thailand came to my office and said to me that we have really dealt with them.

“But I asked what did we do wrong and he said unemployment in Thailand was one of the lowest in the world, 1.2 per cent, it has gone up to four per cent because seven giant rice mills have shut down because Nigeria’s import has fallen by 95 per cent on rice alone.

“So, Mr President we thank you for the support and we thank all the agencies and those of you in the private sector for your resilience,’’he said.

The minister, however, alerted the nation on what he described as alarming smuggling of fake fertiliser and rice along the western borders of the country.

He, therefore, called on the federal government to take drastic measures to check the trend as all previous diplomatic measures had failed to address the menace.

“But one last request Mr President, we have to take one strong measure against our neighbour to the West. The smuggling is really compromising our capacity on our result.

“Too much rice, too much fake fertilizer is still coming across the borders into this country in spite of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) we have with them they are not listening.

“Maybe if the Federal Government takes one tough action, they will come and renegotiate the terms because good neighbourliness means reciprocity.

“We can’t be allowing them to survive at our own expense and I believe that we will do something about it,’’he said.

Ogbeh appealed to FEPSAN to adjust their blending formula using little more micro nutrients for some crops like cocoa, cashew, plantain, banana and others that would soon be revived by his ministry.

The minister noted that the agricultural sector had created millions of jobs for Nigerians in the last two years.

He said:“People may say what they like about jobs. Recently I heard that we lost four million jobs. Nobody has calculated the millions and millions of jobs created on the farms.

“So, this programme as it grows can only make us stronger.

“As soon as more dams and lakes are put in place, you begin to sell fertilizer all year round and not wait for the rainy season alone.’’

The minister made this known at a meeting of the Presidential Fertilizer Initiative (PFI) and leadership of the Fertiliser Producers and Suppliers of Nigeria (FEPSAN) held at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja, on Friday, February 2.

The meeting was presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ogbeh said Thailand’s Ambassador to Nigeria made the “accusation’’ when he visited him in February.

Health / [PHOTO] Man Goes Blind In Shocking Reaction To Antibiotics by Realsman405(m): 9:15pm On Mar 02, 2018
A father-of-two has revealed that 90 per cent of his body was left covered in burns and he was temporarily blinded after a reaction to antibiotics.

Josh Dennis, 38, was prescribed the drugs to cure a staph infection in his jaw.

He noticed irritation and itching under his finger nails, before he came out in hives and within a week, he was in a burns unit in Holly, Colorado.

Josh said: “Over 90 per cent of my body was affected. Perhaps the worst part that I haven’t talked about was the genitals.

“My scrotum looked like a brain oozing pus. The blistering and pain I had in this area was excruciating. I almost blocked it out completely. It took weeks to heal.

“My mouth was the second painful part. The new skin. I couldn’t eat anything except noodles or eggs for a while.”

It is believed that his symptoms were caused by Stevens-Johnson Syndrom and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis.

“I couldn’t shower like I used to. I couldn’t eat the same stuff as the rest of the family. I couldn’t see very well. I couldn’t drive for six weeks or so.

“Here we are eight weeks later and it’s still a struggle, but my vision is almost back to normal, I’m off a lot of the prescriptions, and I can eat anything again,” he added.

The symptoms of Stevens-Johnson Syndrom and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis were first brought about after Josh had antibiotics.

But physicians say that a reaction of this kind to medication is completely unpredictable and could affect anyone.

He was given a two-week prescription and towards the end of the course of medication, he had his first unusual reactions.

Josh said: “The first thing that started to bug me was my fingernails. They felt like they were all irritable from being cut too short and there was an itching under my nails.

“The next day, the bottom of my feet started with the severe itching. Then my palms with an uncontrollable itch.

“I woke up Sunday in the middle of the night to my feet just burning and itching like I never felt before. I could barely walk on them,” he recalled.

Concerned by his unusual symptoms Josh drove three-hours home and upon getting into the shower, discovered his skin was covered in hives.

The burns covered Josh’s body and left him temporarily blind. Four days before Christmas, he had an operation to save his sight.

Surgeons attached membrane made from placenta between his eyelids and eyeballs to protect his cornea.

Josh’s skin slowly started to heal and after New Year’s Day, he was told that if he could increase his ability to walk, consume food and other things, he could be released.

Now he is slowly returning to normal life – now without limitations on his diet, able to walk and hopes to go back to work soon.

Nairaland / General / Woman Earns Thousands Selling Her Breast Milk To Men by Realsman405(m): 8:45pm On Mar 02, 2018
A mum-of-two is raking in thousands selling her breast milk to men around the world.

Married Rafaela Lamprou gave birth to her son Anjelo seven months ago, and was producing excess milk which she had no room to store.

Since then, she has handed out over 502 litres of breast milk to strangers who pay thousands for it.

That means she has made an impressive $6,000 from her sales to men – and she plans to keep going.

The hotel worker – who also has a four-year-old daughter, Hailey – started by donating her milk to women who were struggling to produce breast milk for their babies. She began sending it to the UK and within her home country of Cyprus and still donates her milk to women.

But the 24-year-old soon found that men were approaching her for the milk – either as part of their health regime or for fetish reasons. Now Rafaela, who lives with her husband Alex, 33, and their two kids, sends her milk out to the men for cash on a regular basis.

She said: “I gave birth to my son seven months ago. I had a lot of milk and I thought I needed to do something with it, so I started storing it.

“But it was too much – it was taking up all the chest freezer. It was full. I didn’t know what to do with it.

“So, I asked a couple of mums who were having trouble breast-feeding if they wanted it. I started giving it away.”

Rafaela continued: “I was producing over two litres of milk a day and giving it to women locally. Then I started shipping it to the UK.

“I liked seeing the new mums’ faces when I was able to help them. I then started to get some enquiries from men.

“It started with men who were interested in body building. They say it is good for building muscle mass.

“But then, I started to get enquiries from men with fetishes. Now I breastfeed on demand. I have no idea what they do with it, but they tell me they consume it.”

Rafaela said that at first, it was a ‘bit strange’ giving her breast milk to guys with fetishes – however, she’s okay with it as long as it doesn’t go any further in terms of asking her to show any part of her body, explaining that she’s “open minded.”

“I am not sure how much longer I will carry on for,” she continued. “I had no idea with my first baby that you could do this kind of thing. But now it is quite addictive.

“My husband is so supportive of me. He is really cool about it. He is happy as long as I am.”

Rafaela has started her own Facebook group to sell her breast milk, where people can approach her.

She is also on a website where men can approach her for the milk.

Family / “it’s Not Possible”, Grieving Dad Said When Told Train Crushed His Son by Realsman405(m): 9:06am On Feb 28, 2018
Publish Date: Feb 24 2018 1:39PM

He last saw his son at 7.15am Friday as both men left for work. Minutes later a train crushed him. The next time he saw Paul was to gather his son’s mangled remains from the rail track at Kubwa.

Francis Idoko was at work, some three hours after parting ways with his son Paul, 27, when he got a message to return a friend’s emergency call.

“’I called him back, he said ‘your son is dead’ and I replied ‘it is not possible!’”

He last saw his son at 7.15am Friday as both men left for work. Minutes later a train crushed him. The next time he saw Paul was to gather his son’s mangled remains from the rail track at Kubwa.

On Saturday, he relived his last moments with his son at his residence located at Arab road, few kilometers to the scene of the accident.

“Àt about 7 .15 a.m., as I prepare to go to work and Paul came to into my bedroom to greet me because he was ready to go to work too.

“When Paul came in, his mother was lying on the bed. And I asked the mother if she had N50 change because my neighbour usually gives me a ride to Maitama Junction from where I take a cab to complete my journey to my office.

“’His mother said he had no smaller naira denomination note as well but Paul said he had changes.

“He brought out N200 and told me, Daddy, I hope the taxi driver can get a change with this. I said yes, thank you and left.

“’When I got to the office at about 10. 30 a.m., my friend called me and asked me to call him back that there was an emergency.

“’I called him back, he said your son is dead and I replied ‘it is not possible!’ This was the boy that gave me transport this money.

“’Later my neighbour, Hassan, also called me to tell me. I called my wife, who was in the living room watching TV with my daughter,” he recounted.

Idoko said the mangled body of his first son was later gathered from the rail tracks.

He said he went to the Police Post for support to take his son’s remains to the morgue.

“The police said they don’t have that authority.

“So, we went to Phase IV Police Station before taking him to the morgue at Kubwa General Hospital and they accepted the remains.

“’By the grace of God, people rallied around me and I was able to bury my son at the new cemetery by Arab road.”

He told NAN that an officer from the Federal Bureau of Investigation also came to his house and requested for a permission to speak with him.

“’The officer said the DPO and the area commander were interested in the case,” he stated.

Idoko, who hails from Adim Community, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue. said: “ ordinarily, I expected the management of the railway station to come and commiserate with me.

“’This is not about money, we are talking about a succeeding generation that has just died and nobody is saying anything,” he sobbed.

The bereaved father, who said his son was into photography and satellite dish installation, described the late Paul as a hardworking and humble child.

An eyewitness, Sunday Garba, who is a friend to the deceased, also told NAN that they were on their work when the tragedy happened.

“‘’I called Paul this morning because he got a job to install satellite dish about two days ago and was yet to finish. I asked him where he was and he told me he was by the rail line.

“I told him I would join him later. He called me later and asked if he should be going to the house to complete the outstanding work.

“Before I reached the rail track, I saw the train advancing so I stopped. This was around 8 a.m. or 9 a.m.. But by the time the train passed, I called his phone line but it was switched off!

“I started looking for him after the train passed but all I saw was a shirt on the ground and his mangled body. I didn’t know what to do. I burst into tears.

“I was confused, Who should I call?” he told NAN.

Garba described the incidident as devastating and sad.

When contacted on telephone, the FCT Police PRO, Mr Anjuguri Manzah, said he was not aware of the incident.

Manzah advised NAN to “call our Kubwa division for information.”

Health / India Man Chews Off Snake's Head In Revenge After Snake Bite – Report by Realsman405(m): 3:47pm On Feb 21, 2018
A farmer in northern India reportedly chewed off a snake’s head in revenge after the reptile bit him, with his attending doctors saying they had never come across such a bizarre case, a local media reported on Wednesday.

The incident took place in Uttar Pradesh state’s Hardoi district at the weekend, when the man identified only by his first name, Sonelal – was rushed to a government health centre after locals found him unconscious.

The man told villagers that he was grazing his cattle in the fields when the snake bit him, which however made him so angry he chewed off its hood before spitting it out.

“The snake bit me, so I held its head and chewed it off, it died, then I brought it back to the village. I tore off its head again,’’
Sonelal told the ANI news agency.

Sanjay Kumar, a doctor who treated him said he was amazed that the man survived after biting the hood, which could have contained venom, assuming it was a poisonous snake.

However, the local media said that the doctors failed to find any marks of snakebite on his body.

“I’ve never seen such a case in my life. The man was all right even after biting a snake,’’ Kumar said.

Witnesses who claimed they saw him ingest part of the snake said they suspected the man was addicted to drugs.

Medical officials believe that the man’s abnormal reaction could only be explained if he was under the influence of drugs.

Family / 'My Wife Is Serial Divorcee, I'm Her 5th Husband' by Realsman405(m): 3:33pm On Feb 21, 2018
A 47-year-old businessman, Rufus Otegbola, on Wednesday told an Igando Customary Court, Lagos, that his wife, Funmilayo, is a serial divorcee.

Rufus, who urged the court to dissolve his 13-year-old marriage to Funmilayo for alleged adulterous acts, told the court that he was the fifth husband of the respondent.

“My wife is adulterous and a serial divorcee, she had married and divorced four husbands before I married her.

“Funmilayo is diabolical and fetish, she always comes home with charms and my fear is that she may kill me one day if I do not end the marriage.”

Rufus said that his wife packed out of their matrimonial home without his consent.

“My parent-in-law and my wife’s siblings came to my house to pack my wife’s property without my permission.”

He urged the court to end the marriage as he was no longer in love with her.

In her response, Funmilayo, 42, and a businesswoman, said that her husband was an unrepentant polygamist.

“My husband deceived me. He did not tell me that he had three wives before marrying me.

“He impregnated me and hurried me into his house without legal marriage.

“I discovered that he already had three wives living with him and there was nothing I could do since I was pregnant, I had to stay.”

Funmilayo said that Rufus had also turned her into a punching bag.

“My husband beats me all time and even when I was pregnant, he beats hell out of me; I fell into labour immediately, forcing the delivery of the baby.

“As a result of the frequent beating, on May 9, 2016, I packed my belongings from his house and moved to my parent’s house.”

Funmilayo further described Rufus as an ungrateful person.

“When he lost his job, I was the one feeding him with his wives and their children and I was also paying the school fees of our children and my step children.”

The mother of four, however, consented to the dissolution of the marriage, saying “I am also fed up with the union”.

In his judgment, the President of the court, Mr Akin Akinniyi, noted that the estranged couple were tired of the marriage as all efforts to reconcile them had failed.

“Since both parties consented to the dissolution of their marriage, this court has no choice than to dissolve the marriage.

“The court pronounced the marriage between Mr Rufus Otegbola and Mrs Funmilayo Otegbola dissolved today, both parties henceforth ceased to be husband and wife.

“Both are free to go their separate way without any hindrances and molestation,” Akinniyi ruled.

Crime / I Differentiate Between Parts From Killed Persons, Corpses By Smell — Ritualist by Realsman405(m): 9:59pm On Feb 12, 2018
By Ola Ajayi

Alfa Hammed Sulaiman, who says he buys human parts for N2,100 to make money rituals for clients, said he can tell the difference between the parts from a person intentionally killed and those from an exhumed corpse by smelling them.

The alfa was, yesterday, paraded by Oyo State Police Command alongside an accomplice, Pastor Tope Akinyele, after they were caught with parts they cut off a corpse buried four days earlier.

They were arrested, earlier in the week, by vigilante men at Ayegun area of Ibadan, with the human parts.

Parading the suspects alongside 13 other suspects for being in possession and buying of human parts at the state Police Command, Eleyele, Ibadan, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Abiodun Odude, said their arrest led to the arrest of two more suspects by operatives of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, of the command.

Confessions

While Alfa Sulaiman told journalists that his clients come to his residence for all kinds of prayers, including money rituals, Pastor Akinyele claimed he is a presiding pastor of Light of God, a white garment church at Oranyan, Ibadan.

According to Sulaiman, “I called one of my suppliers and told him I wanted to buy human parts. We then agreed to go to the graveyard at night. I usually buy a chunk of human flesh for N2,100. I pound it with soap for my customers to bathe with.”

He added that he has many clients, including market men and women.

On how he would distinguish parts of exhumed bodies and those killed intentionally, he explained that when he smelt the parts, he would know if the person was killed or exhumed from a graveyard.

The other suspect, Pastor Akinyele, who also confessed to having taken an active part in the crime, said the insatiable quest to get rich pushed him into the crime.

Police

Meanwhile, the Police Command has vowed to arrest all suspects in connection with the killing of a SARS operative by herdsmen.

The Commander of a team of SARS, ASP Sheu Magu, was reportedly killed by suspected herdsmen as they tried disarming the herdsmen, who were allegedly terrorising residents of Saki.

The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Abiodun Odude, said the Command had earlier arrested four suspects in connection with the killing, but promised more persons will go in for it.

Nairaland / General / Re: 1918 Vs 2018: 13 Things Women Couldn’t Do 100 Years Ago by Realsman405(m): 8:36pm On Feb 06, 2018
• Sit in the House of Lords:The Life Peerages Act 1958 entitled women to sit in the House of Lords for the first time.

• Work on the London Stock Exchange:Women were admitted to the London Stock Exchange for the first time in the institution’s history in 1973 following campaigning by women in the financial sector.

• Obtain a court order against a violent husband:The 1976 Domestic Violence and Matrimonial Proceedings Act enabled married women to obtain a court order against their violent husbands without divorce or separation proceedings.

A court could order a man out of the matrimonial home, whether or not he owned it or tenancy was in his name. Problems arose because this protection did not apply to unmarried women.

• Single women couldn’t access the contraceptive pill:The contraceptive pill was launched in 1961. In 1961, it was available to married women only, but availability was extended in 1967.

• Get a legal and safe abortion:The 1967 Abortion Act legalised abortion in the UK, for women who were up to 24 weeks pregnant. Two consenting doctors had to agree that continuing the pregnancy would be harmful either to the woman’s physical or mental health, or to the child’s physical or mental health when it was born.

• Report marital rape:It was not until 1991 that the House of Lords made rape in marriage a criminal offence in the UK.

Lawmakers ruled the 250-year-old law was ‘anachronistic and offensive’, adding: “A rapist remains a rapist and is subject to the criminal law, irrespective of his relationship with his victim.”

• Women can still be forced to wear heels by their employer:Calls for a ban on “sexist” dress codes which force women to wear high heels to work has been rejected by the Government.

It means that employers can continue to insist that female employees wear heels, providing it is considered a job requirement and men are made to dress to an “equivalent level of smartness.”

Nairaland / General / 1918 Vs 2018: 13 Things Women Couldn’t Do 100 Years Ago by Realsman405(m): 8:33pm On Feb 06, 2018
Published February 6, 2018

Women’s suffrage was a pivotal moment in the battle for equality, but in 1918, women still faced many forms of discrimination.

While 8.4 million women gaining the vote in 1918 represented significant progress for the feminist movement, gender inequality was still prevalent in the era and beyond.

Many laws and societal attitudes meant women faced barriers and prejudice throughout society — in work, education and marriage.

Here are just a few examples of the discrimination women faced in 1918:

• Hold property on the same terms as men:In 1918, women could not inherit property on the same terms as men. The Law of Property Act 1922 changed that and meant a husband and wife could inherit each other’s property. Legislation passed four years later meant women could finally hold and dispose of property on the same terms as men.

• Serve on a jury:Women were unable to serve on a jury or as a magistrate until the Sex Disqualification (Removal) Act 1919 was passed. However, juries remained overwhelmingly male over the next 40 years before rules concerning jury qualification were reformed in the 1970s.

• Open a bank account or apply for a loan:Women also faced financial discrimination and were seen as a high-risk investment by banks as little as just 50 years ago.

It wasn’t until 1975 that women could open a bank account in their own name.

Single women still couldn’t apply for a loan or credit card in their own name without a signature from their father, even if they earned more, as recently as the mid-1970s.

A 2011 report, by left-wing think tank The Institute for Public Policy Research, found evidence of discrimination against businesswomen by banks still existing today. It also found an unlawful denial of fair access to mortgages on the basis of pregnancy or maternity leave.

“It is a picture that seems to be based on stereotypes about women as inevitable primary care-givers to children and secondary earners and one which plays into discursive norms of the undervaluing of women,” it said.

• Be refused service for spending their own money in a pub:Before 1982, women trying to spend their money in English pubs could legally be refused service, a reflection of the older societal norms that had established pubs as a ‘male-only’ social place.

Protests against the rules had made themselves heard over a decade earlier, when in 1970 a group of female journalists demanded to be served because ‘our money is equal so our rights must be equal.’ In the 1970s, women could legally be refused the right to go drink unaccompanied.

• Become an accountant or lawyer:The Sex Discrimination Removal Act 1919 changed the law on women being disqualified from certain professions on the grounds of sex.

It gave women access to the legal profession and accountancy for the first time and meant they could also hold any civil or judicial office or post.

• Have a right to equal pay:A strike by 187 female workers at a Ford car factory in Dagenham in 1968 is cited as being instrumental in the passing of the 1970 Equal Pay Act.

The machinists walked out and went on strike for three weeks in protest against their male colleagues earning 15 per cent more than them.

The Equal Pay (Amendment) Act 1983 allowed women to be paid the same as men for work of equal value. However, equal pay is still an issue today, with women losing out on nearly £140bn a year due to gender pay gap.

According to a 2017 report by the World Economic Forum, it could still take another 100 years before the global equality gap between men and women disappears entirely.

In 2017, women effectively worked “for free” for 51 days of the year because of the gender pay gap.

• Be considered a ‘person’ in the eyes of the law:In 1929, women became ‘persons’ in their own right under Canadian law following a ruling by the Privy Council. Canadian Emily Murphy, the first female magistrate in the British Empire, and four others, led the fight after lawyers challenged her right to pass sentence, arguing that as a woman, she was not qualified to sit in the Senate of Canada.
Sports / Re: Parents Of Dele Alli Beg Him To Accept Them Back Into His Life (Photos) by Realsman405(m): 10:05am On Feb 06, 2018
Kehinde also explained his own encounter, saying he repeatedly made the 5,000-mile journey to London from his home in Houston, trying to reunite the family. He said he bought tickets for a couple of Spurs games home and away just so he can see Dele in the flesh and support him, including at the club’s 1-0 win over Middlesbrough earlier this month.

Kehinde says: “Not being able to see or speak to him hurts a lot. Myself and his brothers watch all his games on TV and they ask me, ‘Why won’t he see us?’

“Dele has apparently told his sister I was never there for him growing up, but I can’t understand that. He lived with me for years and I have always been there for him both emotionally and financially.
Up until he was an adult I paid for every holiday he ever went on and all his costs. I bought him his first car when he passed his driving test. Now he is turning his back on the family who love him.”

Kehinde adds: “I know some people will think we just want him for his money, but it couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m very wealthy in my own right and I don’t need a penny from Dele.

“I just want to be here for him and for him to know that I love him.”

Denise, who still cuddles Dele’s childhood Chelsea FC bedspread to feel close to him, says: “Every night I say a prayer asking for God to bring him back to us. I dream about him coming home.”
