President Umaru Yar’Adua who was smuggled into the country in the early hours of Wednesday is spending his third day in a mobile ambulance pending the completion of an Intensive Care Unit inside the Aso Villa. The house is being fitted with sundry gadgets that will keep him alive and hopefully aid his recovery.

Sources in the presidency confirmed that the president will only be moved into his official residence when the frantic work going on to complete a state of the art Intensive Care Unit (ICU) within the State House, is concluded. As exclusively reported by NEXT, there has been increased activity in the State House since Sunday after several trucks were spotted going in and out of the place

Italy, Malta Ask Swiss to Remove Qaddafi From Banned List

Feb. 17 (Bloomberg) -- Italy and Malta asked Switzerland to remove 188 Libyans, including leader Muammar Qaddafi, from a list banning visas and end a dispute that led Libyan authorities to block most European visitors in retaliation.

“We renew our appeal to Switzerland for accelerated negotiations toward reaching an agreement with Libya and to confront the pending problems and to abolish the list of names,” according to a joint statement distributed today by the Rome-Based Italian Foreign Ministry.

Four Italians have been detained at Tripoli’s airport in the standoff. Six citizens were sent back to Italy and about 37 have been able to enter Libya since the dispute began. Italy is Libya’s biggest trading partner.

Libyan Foreign Minister Moussa Koussa flew to Rome to meet with his Italian and Maltese counterparts to discuss Libya’s decision to turn back visa holders from the 25 countries that make up the Schengen no-visa travel zone, which includes Switzerland and excludes the U.K. and Ireland.

Adrian Sollberger, a spokesman of the Swiss Foreign Ministry, declined to comment on the request by Italy and Malta. Switzerland is “continuing a restrictive” visa policy for Libyan nationals that was introduced in the second half of 2009, he said earlier today.

Switzerland’s clash with Libya began with the arrest of Qaddafi’s son Hannibal and his wife Aline in Geneva in July 2008. They were released on bail following two days in custody after employees of the couple complained of mistreatment.

“The European Union can’t be held hostage over a bilateral issue,” Frattini said yesterday at a press conference in Paris with French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner. “Schengen is not a diplomatic organization.”

Rome - Italy is urging Switzerland to drop a travel ban on Libyans, which prompted a Libyan ban on visas for citizens from 25 European nations.

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini made the appeal during a meeting in Rome Wednesday with Libya's foreign minister. Italy has major investments in Libya.

Frattini says Rome is asking Tripoli to allow entrance of all citizens from Schengen member nations not involved in a spat between oil-and-gas rich Libya and Switzerland, which is outside the EU.

Libya has also threatened to expel visitors from the 25-nation zone as part of the dispute that started in 2008 with the arrest of one of Gadhafi's sons in Switzerland. - Sapa-AP

TRIPOLI (Reuters) - Libya has suspended the issuing of entry visas to European citizens apart from British nationals, an official at the country's main international airport said on Monday.

Asked by Reuters to confirm reports of the move, the official, who did not want to be identified, said: "This is right. This decision has been taken. No visas for Europeans, except Britain."

No explanation was given for the suspension, and there was no immediate confirmation from the Libyan government.

Italy's foreign ministry confirmed the measure and said it was in retaliation for Switzerland's recent decision to publish a blacklist of 180 Libyans banned from entering the country.

Libya has been locked for months in a diplomatic row with Switzerland over the prosecution of two Swiss businessmen who had been working in the North African country.

"The Libyan response to the Swiss decision has affected all the countries of the Schengen zone," said a spokesman for the Italian foreign ministry. "Contacts are under way between the countries of the zone to coordinate over this measure."

Libya's Oea newspaper, which has close ties to a son of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, earlier reported that Libya would stop issuing visas to citizens of countries in the Schengen area, which includes non-EU member Switzerland.
