The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Ibadan will on Tuesday deliver judgment in Sen. Rasidi Ladoja’s petition. Ladoja, the governorship candidate of Accord Party, is challenging the victory of Governor Abiola Ajimobi of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in April 11 polls. He joined APC, INEC and the Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr Rufus Akeju, as co-respondents. The Counsel to the petitioner, Mr Richard Ogunwole (SAN), had urged the tribunal to nullify Ajimobi’s election and declared his client as the winner of the election or order a rerun. Ogunwole contended that the election was marred by irregularities and malpractices. But, Mr Wole Olanipekun (SAN), Counsel to Ajimobi, urged the tribunal to dismiss the petition, saying that it lacked merit and facts. The tribunal Chairman, Justice Mohammed Mayaki, had on Sept. 30 after the adoption of the written addresses promised that the date for the judgment would be communicated to the parties. www.thenationonlineng.net/tribunal-to-deliver-judgment-on-ladojas-petition-tuesday/ |

The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) has confirmed the death of 99 Nigerian pilgrims in the recent stampede at Mina, Saudi Arabia. The Commissioner Planning, Research Statistic Information and Library Service (PRSILS) of the commission, Dr. Saleh Okenwa told reporters in Makkah on Thursday that 42 were injured and 214 others missing He however insisted that those missing cannot be declared dead, since identification of those affected were still being collated by the Saudi Arabia health authorities in conjunction with Nigerian and other health officials. He also gave the breakdown of the Hajj victims as 73 deaths from the state pilgrim welfare board, agencies and commissions, while the remaining 26 were from the tour operators. “Those injured were 42, 41 from the state pilgrims and one from tour operators. The numbers of those missing from the states are 96 males, 94 females and four males who were officials, totaling 194. Ten males and 10 females were missing from the tour operators. Of those injured only seven remain in the hospitals on admission and receiving treatments and others were discharged,” Okenwa said. When asked if there is hope that those missing can still be found alive, the commissioner said: “In the early days people expressed hope but the hope is weaning. We cannot declare those missing as dead since there is no evidence to state that.” www.thenationonlineng.net/hajj-stampede-nahcon-confirms-99-nigerians-dead-214-missing/ |
Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on Thursday warned Senators from the state against blocking the nomination of former Governor Kayode Fayemi during the screening of ministerial nominees next week. The governor gave the warning during a meeting with executives of the Federation of Ekiti State Student Unions (FEESU) in his office in Ado Ekiti, the state capital. Describing Ekiti as a “project that belongs to all,” the governor said what he is after is the progress of the state and that everything must be done to support it. According to him, an Ekiti man is an Ekit man irrespective of his party affiliation, urging the federal lawmakers from the state to play their own part in ensuring that Fayemi is cleared when he appears at the Senate. Fayose said: “Ekiti is my priority. I call on all the House of Representatives members and senators that went to Abuja from here, some people petitioned the National Assembly stating how Fayemi sunk Ekiti into heavy debts, I have told the members not to do that. “It is God that judges people, not us. You must support him there. They should not go to the Senate and oppose Kayode Fayemi, no, they must never do that. An Ekiti man is an Ekiti man. I appeal to everybody, you must support him.” He charged the students to shun acts that could mar their future, saying he would never ask them to engage in party politics or thuggery. The governor urged them to be mindful of the current financial situation of the state while making their demands, promising to always treat young people with utmost respect and love. He promised to hand over a brand new bus donated to him during his campaigns to the Ekiti State University Students Union Government and another bus to transport the students to and fro their campus. Fayose equally gave the assurance that other state-owned institutions would be considered for assistance too. www.thenationonlineng.net/fayose-to-senators-dont-block-fayemis-nomination/ |
