The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) has told the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Adams Oshiomhole, to leave the party alone and face his pending corruption allegations.

The party accused the chair of seeking a face-saving measure by embarking on what it described as shadow-boxing against the PDP.

In a statement Tuesday by the spokesman for the PDP, Kola Ologbondiyan, the party mocked Oshiomhole, saying the party chair is battling to save his political career over allegations of corruption and malfeasance in the handling of party affairs.

It added that the APC chair was in no position to cast aspersions or pontificate to the PDP on its internal activities and relationship with its elected public officials.
The statement said, “Instead of trying to launder his image by unnecessarily attacking the PDP, we advise Oshiomhole to redeem his name by submitting himself to the Department of State Services (DSS) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to answer huge allegations of corruption as Edo state governor as well as alleged misconducts as APC Chairman”.

The PDP challenged Oshiomhole to speak out on the allegations that he fled the country at the wake of his reported interrogation by the DSS in 2018 over accusations of corruption

“This is a leader who had accepted that his party and the government it formed are sanctuaries of corrupt persons, when he stated, at the APC campaign rally in Edo state last year, that once you join the APC, your sins are forgiven.

“Moreover, instead of this fixation on the PDP, Oshiomhole already has his plate full with the crisis in his home state, Edo, where he is generally believed to be responsible for political tension by trying to force himself on the state governor, Governor Godwin Obaseki, as godfather.

“Oshiomhole needs to concentrate on the crisis rocking his party as well as the Presidency where the members of the cabal are at daggers drawn over the sharing of positions as “booty” of a rigged election,” the PDP added.

President Muhammadu Buhari and his Vice, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, have been challenged by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to publicly declare their assets.

The party said that this will serve as a proof to Nigerians and the world that they are not corrupt and to demonstrate leadership by example

The PDP also called on the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila to make public their assets.

This was contained in a statement by the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, Diran Odeyemi in Abuja on Friday.

The main opposition party condemned the position of the Code of Conduct Bureau, CCB, which has all the while, insisted that it could not release details of assets of the President and other top government officials without their consent.

The PDP, therefore, called on all high-ranking political office holders to waive the caveat placed on the Code of Conduct Bureau and make their asset known to Nigerians.

PDP said that if former Chief Justice of the Federation, Walter Onnoghen could be made to face prosecution for not declaring in full his asset, other top government officials should also submit themselves for public scrutiny through public declaration of what they own as assets.

The statement added, “We are of the opinion that President Muhammadu Buhari, Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan and Speaker, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila should declare openly their assets to allow Nigerians to further see how much wealth they have acquired since joining government.
“We believe laying claim to sainthood is easy as President Buhari and others have been doing all along, but Nigerians deserve to see beyond whatever government forces down their throats. By making public declaration of their assets, Nigerians will be able to see better and judge accordingly.”

PDP warned that should the President and others fail to make public declaration of their assets, further aspersions would be cast on the anti-graft efforts of the present administration.

The party stressed that rather than build on several innovations to end graft introduced by PDP administrations, “President Buhari appears directionless and uncoordinated to stop corruption in the country.”

The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) and the players were locked in talks over unpaid salaries on Thursday, with both parties threatening to withdraw from the Africa Cup of Nations ahead of their final pool match, local media has reported.

Reports said no agreement was reached with ZIFA offering to pay 5,500 dollars of the 12,500 dollars the players are owed on Friday, but it was rejected amid the threat of a boycott of training until the full amounts were settled.

Both parties then threatened to quit the tournament ahead of Sunday’s clash with struggling Democratic Republic of Congo, where victory would give Zimbabwe a strong chance of progressing to the second round.

“We were called in and told of the developments about the possible withdrawal from the tournament and we told them (ZIFA officials) that we were ready to go home because we believe they haven’t fulfilled our contracts,” Zimbabwe’s Herald newspaper quoted an unnamed player as saying.

The reports suggested ZIFA has gone so far as to engage the Confederation of African Football over the cost of withdrawing — which could invite a ban from future tournaments.

For their part, a number of players have told officials they are ready to call it quits as the parties’ trade barbs and clamour for the upper hand in negotiations.

A ZIFA spokesman said he would not comment on the matter, but suggested clarity would be provided later on Friday.

The players were at loggerheads with ZIFA before the team left for Egypt and had threatened to boycott their opener against the host nation on June 21.

ZIFA crafted a lengthy statement on Tuesday to dismiss “misleading and false” allegations made on social media that funds destined for tournament preparations and player salaries had been misappropriated by officials.

“ZIFA is advising both CAF and FIFA on the role of these individuals in destabilising our football,” the statement read.

“At the right time, a full dossier shall be released by ZIFA with detailed information on resources received and used, (as well as) destabilising efforts prior and during the tournament.”

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday said he remained worried about the 13 million children who are out of school system in the country.

Obasanjo added that he was equally bothered by the growing number of youths, about 60 per cent of the country’s population, who he said have not yet found themselves in the nation’s leadership positions unlike what obtained in his time or elsewhere.

The ex -president who spoke in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when the National Youths Council of Nigeria (NYCN) visited him at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), also noted that whatever he had achieved for himself or done for the country, were due to his having access to education.

He, however, urged the youth not to allow anybody to  tell them they “are too young to lead,” saying those frustrating the youth are not better endowed than them.

Obasanjo said:  “Whatever I have done, I have done it because I was educated and the love I have for Nigeria. If I didn’t have education, I would not have been able to do what I have done and today, it pains me that more than 13million Nigerian children who should be in school are out of school.

“We don’t need additional teachers; you will only increase what those teachers get maybe by 40 per cent or something,  we can even do two streams if we prepare for that and start two years from now and those children would have become product that would be able to make contributions and make their own life better and as well making the life of their families too better.

“I am so much concerned about the youths, the truth is, over 60 percent of our populations are youths and under 30 years of age.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has appointed a former Sultanate counsellor, Alhaji Isah Bajini Galadanci, as the state Commissioner for Information.

Galadanci was among the 27 new Commissioners assigned portfolio, according to a statement issued by Abubakar Shekara, Director General, Media and Public Affairs to Governor Tambuwal yesterday.


Others assigned with portfolios include: a former member of the House of Representatives, Abdulsamad Dasuki, as Commissioner for Finance and former Governor Attahiru Bafarawa’s son, Sagir Bafarawa, as Commissioner for Environment, while the Ministry for Local Government is to be overseen by Deputy Governor Manir Muhammad Dan’Iya.

The immediate past SSG and speaker of the House of Assembly, Professor Bashir Garba, and Salihu Maidaji would oversee the Ministry of Higher Education and Works respectively, while Umar Nature retained his Water Resources Ministry.

A former lawmaker representing Kogi West in the National Assembly, Senator Smart Adeyemi, has threatened to work against the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) if the incumbent Governor, Yahaya Bello is denied the ticket to fly the party flag in the forthcoming gubernatorial poll.

Senator Adeyemi disclosed this on Thursday at the All Progressive Congress stakeholders’ forum held in Lokoja.

Reports that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had fixed November 16th 2019 for the governorship election in Kogi and Bayelsa States.

The former Nigeria Union of Journalist President said the political destiny of the Western Senatorial district lies in the return of the governor.

According to him, for fairness, justice and equity, Gov Bello is the best for the APC in November.

“Other senatorial districts have ruled Kogi State for two terms. Now a brother from Kogi central, who has done very well in his first tenure; should also be given another opportunity.

“If Gov. Bello is given the opportunity to lead us for another four years, I am convinced that we in the West will rule Kogi State.

“I am using this medium to beg our party leaders not to make the mistake of allowing one to change a winning team in Kogi State. Those who say APC cannot win Kogi under Bello are not God, because he is covenant child. If Governor Bello is denied the APC ticket, some of us might be forced to work against the party,” he said.

Also speaking, the Senator representing Kogi East Senator, Isah Jibrin Echocho, traced the current problem of the state to abuse of trust.

Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State Governor, says his administration has made the state safer even though he inherited a chaotic security apparatus

The governor said that both citizens, residents, travelers, investors, and tourists in the State have continued to enjoy peace under his administration.

The governor says his claims are hinged on verifiable national data coming out of credible institutions.

The governor said this at the University of Abuja on Wednesday, during a Two-day colloquium organised by The Sultan Maccido Institute for Peace, Leadership and Developments Studies (SMIPLDS) where he featured as a keynote speaker on issues bothering curbing insurgency and insecurity in the country.

Bello who was represented by Navy Commander Jerry Omodara, his State Security Adviser said Kogi state before he came on board had suffered insecurity, due to sheer laxity, corruption, and non-commitment of resources over the years.

He said nothing was put on the ground to secure infrastructure and manpower in the State as the security agencies found themselves trailing the highly mobile and logistically superior criminal franchise.

Bell noted that killing, bank robberies, jailbreak by Boko Haram insurgents, attack of offices of security agencies, kidnapping and other forms of criminality categorized the previous government and there was no political will and opacity in the use of security votes.

Five Non Governmental Organisations in Cross River State, namely: Cross River State for Good Governance, (CRSFGG), Cross River Accountability Forum, (CRAF), Cross River Society Network, (CRSN), Cross River Coalition For Justice, (CRCFJ), and Arise for Local Government Autonomy, (AFLGA), have given the Governor of the State, Prof Ben Ayade, a 14-day ultimatum to begin the process of conducting local government election in the state or they will take to the streets in protest.

Speaking to journalists in Cross River State on behalf of the NGOs, Comrade Emmanuel Agbor said the PDP administration led by Gov Ben Ayade has failed the people as he has refused to conduct local government elections since the last set of council chairmen and councillors elected during the administration of former Governor Liyel Imoke ended their tenure in 2016.

The groups condemned what they described as the undemocratic behaviour of the ruling PDP by refusing to institute democratic structure at the local government level.

He wondered why Governor Ben Ayade, who prides himself as a democrat, would find it difficult conducting local government elections since he became governor in 2015, but has resorted to appointing civil servants as heads of local government administration (HOLGA) who have been running the councils to the detriment of Cross Riverians.

Agbor, who is the coordinator of Arise for Local Government Autonomy, AFLGA, said: “We have endured the PDP for too long. We cannot continue in this undemocratic manner when we claim to be a democratic party. This is the auspicious time for us to rise up and be counted in this struggle to rescue the local government
“If in the next few months the PDP government refuses to democratize the grassroots administration, we shall employ all legal means to get the right things done.”

On his part, the state Chairman of APC, Mr John Ochala, told journalists that: “It is unimaginable that Governor Ben Ayade could not conduct council election and rather rationalizing that the councils are not buoyant enough to sustain itself.”
Ochala continued, “APC is committed to enthroning a democratic culture at the local level and giving the people the freedom to choose who leads them.

“The withholding of local govt funds is a welcome development. It is what our party have been canvassing for all along. It is the only way the state governors will be compelled to conduct local government elections.

“It’s unfortunate that the country has degenerated to the level where governors will display so much contempt for the very system that brought them to power,” he stated.

When our correspondent called the PDP State Chairma,n Ntufam Edim Inok on phone for comments as he was not in the office, he failed to pick his calls. Similarly, the permanent secretary Ministry of information, Aye Henshaw, could not be reached on phone.

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday inaugurated the National Economic Council, NEC, to oversee the economic plans of his administration for the next four years.

The inauguration was held at the council chambers of the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Speaking during the inauguration, Buhari urged NEC members to ensure that security, education, health and agriculture are actively implemented and closely monitored.

According to Buhari, the implementation of these programmes would ensure a more peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

I am delighted to be with you this afternoon to inaugurate the National Economic Council (NEC).

2. NEC is established by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (1999), as amended. By virtue of Section 153 and paragraph 18 of the 3rd Schedule to the Constitution, NEC has the mandate to advise the President on economic policy of the country and in particular, co-ordination of the economic planning efforts, and programmes of the three- tiers of Government.

3. I am very happy to observe that during our first term of office, the Council made very significant progress, holding an unprecedented total of 38 meetings and setting up 10 Ad-Hoc Committees to address various issues of national concern. In the course of its deliberations, it came up with a total of 173 resolutions, cutting across eight areas, namely;

a. Agriculture and Solid Minerals;

b. Investments Promotion and Industrialization;

c. Monetary and fiscal stability;

d. Infrastructure;

e. Health and Education;

f. Revenue Generation;

g. Security and

h. Support for States.

4. The resolutions were designed to energize the various sectors of the Nigerian economy to which the eight areas relate. Initiatives brought about by the NEC resolutions are either implemented already or at different stages of implementation across the country. Together, they have proved to be of utmost importance in dictating the pace of national development.

5. I therefore urge the NEC Coordination Team to press forward with key initiatives that will strengthen the implementation mechanism, enhance cooperation across States and further promote joint deliberations, peer learning and experience sharing, under a very strong Monitoring and Evaluation Framework.

6. Your Excellencies, I want you to pay special attention to the four major issues of security, education, health and agriculture in the coming years of this tenure. As you are no doubt aware, our successes in these four areas will go a long way in lifting our people out of poverty and secure our future for sustainable growth and development.

7. On Security, government will continue to rate security of lives and properties as top priority on our agenda. We are firmly committed to securing the territorial integrity of our nation, while confronting the remnants of terrorists, bandits and other criminals across the country. There must be collective and deliberate efforts by all to improve the security of lives and properties across the country. Security is a bottom to top operation. Everybody must be involved for total success.

8. On education, I want to stress in particular the need to take very seriously and enforce very rigorously the statutory provisions on free and compulsory basic education. Section 18(3) of the 1999 Constitution as amended places on all of us here an obligation to eradicate illiteracy and provide free and compulsory education.

9. Section 2 of the Compulsory, Free Universal Basic Education Act provides that every Government in Nigeria shall provide free, compulsory and universal basic education for every child of primary and junior secondary school age. It is indeed a crime for any parent to keep his child out of school for this period. In my view, when a government fails to provide the schools, teachers and teaching materials necessary for basic education, it is actually aiding and abetting that crime.

10. This is therefore a call to action. I would like to see every Governor rise from this meeting and rally his local Government Chairmen towards ensuring that our schools offer the right opportunities and provide the needed materials and teachers for basic education, at the minimum. If we are able to do this, the benefits will surely manifest themselves.

11. Ensuring proper education during the first nine years of schooling means that our children start off their lives with some discipline and education. They will be safeguarded from roaming the streets, and protected from all the evil influences that assail idle hands and idle minds.

12. Whatever they choose to do thereafter, children with basic education will be better prepared to learn and to appreciate their own role in society. This will also go a long way in solving our security and other anti-social problems, which are often the manifestations of early delinquency. I therefore think every Governor here should make a firm commitment to be personally involved in ensuring that every child of school age actually goes to school throughout the crucial nine years of basic education.

13. On our own part, the Federal Government will strive to extend the school feeding programme which will not only encourage school enrolment but also enhance the health and learning capabilities of pupils. We will also assist States as much as possible to access the counterpart funding provided by UBEC for the development of basic education.

14. As I already indicated, public healthcare is also a major sector of concern where States and Local Governments have crucial roles to play. Health is an area where the neglect of one person quickly amounts to the neglect of many. It is in our collective interest that each and every citizen gets at least a minimal access to healthcare, including primary, preventive and emergency care.

15. Funding is again a major problem in this regard, so we must take more seriously the idea of universal health insurance and strive to make it work in our respective domains. We must also find ways of assisting the poorest and most vulnerable in our society, who cannot even afford to pay the premium. We must therefore resolve to increase budgetary allocation to health and ensure prompt fund releases to keep the hospitals and primary healthcare centres in operation at all times.

16. The Federal Government is now implementing the Basic Healthcare Provision Fund. By this, we hope to achieve at least 65 percent increase in the share of the population covered by primary healthcare by 2023, up from the 12.6 percent we cover at the moment.

17. Accordingly, it is imperative for us to do more on diversifying the economy, and this necessarily entails the sustenance and even acceleration of the agricultural revolution, which is already firmly rooted in some States. Of our nearly one million hectares of land, about 77% is confirmed suitable for agriculture.

18. The potentials are therefore huge, both for the domestic and international markets. Mechanisation and agro-allied industry are very big areas still largely untapped and awaiting investment, both by government and the private sector. I therefore urge you to take agriculture most seriously as a very viable developmental enterprise.

19. While the Federal Government has primary responsibility for security and will not shy away from it, the States also have a critical role to play; in particular Your Excellencies, as State Governors. You can definitely make a difference, not just by assisting the security agencies in your respective States, but also by keenly pursuing policies and programmes that forestall communal, tribal, religious and societal conflicts; policies and programs that promote education, information, dispute resolution, vocational training and youth employment.

20. I have no doubt that if these four areas – security, education, health and agriculture – are actively implemented and closely monitored by NEC and the Governors’ Forum, we shall in the near future see a more peaceful and prosperous Nigeria.

21. Your Excellencies, the Federal Government in the last four years has demonstrated unwavering inclusiveness in dealing with every State, notwithstanding the political leaning of the Governor or the predominant party in power at the State level. I want this to be your model at the State level. No matter which party we belong to, let us shun divisive policies and join hands together for the upliftment of our people.

22. Going forward, States must in the next four years find ways to increase internally generated revenues, improve VAT collection and increase agricultural output without disrupting business activities. I also want you to work with the Federal Agencies and the service providers in ensuring that broadband infrastructure is made available all over the country. Information and Communication Technology is the future of work and we must not allow ourselves to be left behind.

23. Let me restate the high expectations on NEC as a veritable source of articulating policies and programmes that are expected to drive growth and development, secure our environment and take the country to the next level. Your Excellencies, the challenges that confront us in the next few years, especially in the areas of security, human capital development and employment for our youths are monumental and historic. But we are more than equal to the task.

24. I have the honour and privilege to formally inaugurate the National Economic Council today, and to wish you all a very successful tenure.

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, on Thursday warned that he would no longer tolerate the shutting down of oil production facilities by communities in the state.
He handed this warning at a meeting with Chairmen of Cluster Development Boards in Asari-Toru, Akuku-Toru and Degema Local Government Areas as well as oil companies and security agencies at the state’s Government House in Port Harcourt, the state capital.
Wike warned that under no circumstances should communities take the law into their hands by preventing oil production companies from carrying out their duties.
He also directed the immediate revival of the State Steering Committee on Cluster Development Boards responsible for intervening between oil companies and communities.
According to Wike: “I will not support any company not to carry out their corporate social responsibilities to their host communities.
“However, communities must not take laws into their hands. They must not stop production by the operating companies.
“Such actions will negatively affect the finances of the Federal Government, the state and the local government areas.”
The governor also stated that in cases where companies failed to act within the expectations of the communities, the State Government will mediate through the Steering Committee on Cluster Development Boards.
“It is important that we do not allow crisis to occur in the communities. The Aeroton rig in one community was seized.
“That rig should be allowed to work. I called this meeting because of the concerns raised by the operating companies in the area,” he said.
Wike said the Steering Committee on Cluster Development Boards would have the Permanent Secretary, Community Development, Security Agencies, Community Development Clusters and oil companies as members.
The governor said the committee will meet at regular intervals to address challenges in order to forestall escalation of conflicts.
He regretted that most problems in the Niger Delta are caused by oil companies who patronise and engage with criminal elements to the disadvantage of the host communities.
In his remark, former Commissioner of Environment, Samuel Horsfall pointed out that though the oil companies knew the right things to do, they have never taken the right steps

The Ondo State House of Assembly has sacked the caretaker chairmen of the 18 Local Governments councils in the state.

The House said the dissolution, which takes effect from Thursday, June 13, 2019, equally affects the supervisory councillors in the state.

The sacked officials were asked handover to the Directors of Local Government Administration, (DLG) with immediate effect.
