Eden Hazard was given a Real Madrid jersey to pose with during his presentation at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu, but there was no number on it.
The Belgian signed his contract alongside Florentino Perez and posed with his family for photos in front of Los Blancos' 13 Champions League trophies.

Only the number 16 is currently available in the Real Madrid squad, but there are expected to be exits this summer, with some players leaving their numbers open for Hazard to take.

The President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki has congratulated Nigerians on the country’s attainment of 20 years of uninterrupted democracy, advising that Nigerians should always hold their leaders accountable.

Saraki urged the people to use democracy to institutionalize peace and genuine development.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu, Saraki described the commemoration of 20 years of democracy as a thing of joy in view of the many positive developments the country has witnessed since May 29, 1999.

He advised Nigerians to fully take ownership of democracy and its institutions and use them to “entrench peace, welfare and improved standard of living for all our people.”

The Senate President said that democracy was about the people and the people should use it to achieve social justice, equity, inclusiveness and economic self-reliance.

While urging followers to hold their leaders accountable and ensure they always act in the best interest of the people and country, he also urged the people to be good followers and be law abiding at all times.

He said: “We should avoid conflicts and bloodletting as no country can develop in the midst of chaos. We should all steer clear of issues, comments and situations that emphasise our fault lines.”

He called on all newly-elected leaders who are to be sworn in on Wednesday to work for the development of the country and the continuous preservation of the nation’s democracy.

Saraki stated that the benefits of a constitutional democracy far outweigh the challenges that have confronted the country since the return of democracy.

According to Saraki: “It is a thing of absolute joy and national pride that we are today celebrating two decades of sustained democratic governance in the country.

“It is my hope that every Nigerian will look back at how far we have come in the last 20 years and resolve to continue to preserve our democracy — not minding the observed lapses in the operation of the system.

“We should continue to strive to preserve the present form of democratic governance because democracy still remains the best system of government.

“We have a duty to translate this dream into measurable realities in terms of the security and welfare of the people as well as the socio-economic and political advancement of the country.

“I believe that all our newly sworn-in leaders are fully abreast of the present realities and therefore would spare no effort in working to turn the country around for the better.”

The United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) has expressed concerns over the deteriorating state of security, especially in the north-western part of Nigeria.

According to the UN agency, the rising spate of insecurity has forced an estimated 20,000 Nigerians to seek safety and security in Niger Republic since April.

In a statement on Tuesday signed by its spokesman, Babar Baloch, the UN Refugee Agency said it was working closely with authorities in Niger to provide basic assistance, as well as register the new arrivals as over 18,000 people have already gone through the initial registration process so far.

He said the latest upsurge in violence in the north-western part of Nigeria is not only linked to Boko Haram but multiple reasons, including clashes between farmers and herders of different ethnic groups and many more.

The statement reads, “Recent spike in violence in north-western parts of Nigeria has forced an estimated 20,000 people to seek safety and security in Niger since April.

“People are reportedly fleeing due to multiple reasons, including clashes between farmers and herders of different ethnic groups, vigilantism, as well as kidnappings for ransom in Nigeria’s Sokoto and Zamfara States.

“People leaving Nigeria, and arriving in Niger’s Maradi Region, speak of witnessing extreme violence unleashed against civilians, including machete attacks, kidnappings and sexual violence. The majority of the new arrivals are women and children.

He noted that the ongoing Boko Haram insurgency has already spilled over into Niger, where it has affected its Diffa region since 2015, adding that Niger has continued to be a leading regional example in providing safety to refugees fleeing conflict and persecution in many countries.

“The region currently hosts almost 250,000 displaced people – including refugees from Nigeria and locals being displaced inside their own country.

“Niger continues to be a leading regional example in providing safety to refugees fleeing conflict and persecution in many countries. It has kept its borders open for refugees despite the ongoing violence in several regions bordering Nigeria, Mali and recently Burkina Faso.

“Many of the newly arrived are located very close to the Nigerian border, where there remains a high risk of armed incursions. UNHCR with sister UN agencies and partners is discussing with the government the possibility of relocating them into local towns and villages further in land.

“As well as providing aid to Nigerian new arrivals, UNHCR also plans to support host families, who despite lack of adequate resources and access to basic services, have always shown solidarity towards the displaced and welcomed people into their homes.

“Since the beginning of 2018, violence within the Diffa region perpetrated by elements of Boko Haram has also significantly escalated with a record number of civilian casualties and unprecedented secondary movements within the region.”

Baloch revealed that Niger is currently hosting over 380,000 refugees and asylum seekers from Mali and Nigeria as well as its own internally displaced population, adding that the country has also provided refuge to some 2,782 asylum seekers airlifted from insecurity in Libya, while awaiting durable solutions.

GOVERNOR WIKE INAUGURATES COMMITTEE TO INVESTIGATE TRANSACTIONS OF LOCAL GOVERNMENT COUNCILS

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike on Tuesday inaugurated the "Committee to investigate and audit the financial transactions of the 23 Local Government Councils from May 2018 to May 2019."

Governor Wike said the committee is not aimed at removing any Council Chairman or official, but targeted at improving probity and accountability in the 23 Local Government Councils of the state.

He said: "We are not trying to remove any Local Government Chairman, but it cannot be business as usual in the 23 Local Government Areas.

"We want to know how the Local Government Councils spend their Local Government Allocations. I have never interfered in the administration of Local Government funds.

"I am not one of those governors that interfere with Local Government funds".

Governor Wike regretted that despite the monthly allocations to the 23 Local Government Councils, there is no local Government Area that has executed projects.

"I have found out that there is no Local Government Area where you see a single project. When I was Local Government Council Chairman, we executed projects. For me, I invited the State Governor at the time, Dr Peter Odili to commission projects. No local Government Chairman has invited me to commission a project ", he said.

Governor Wike urged the committee to live above board, saying that if he gets Information that any Local Government Chairman or Godfather attempts to compromise the committee, the committee will be dissolved.

"People must sit up and account for funds of the Local Government Councils. Ask for bank statements, ask for money from Joint Account, ask for the salaries and allowances. If they spent any funds the day I visited, they should state it. We cannot continue the way we are going.

"At the end of every month, they come JAC meeting. We must know how the funds are spent. Also, check which Local Government Councils collected loans when they are not backed to do so without authorisation ".

He said that the committee has three weeks to submit its report. He stated that the State Government counts on the integrity of members of the committee to deliver on the assignment.

Deputy Governor and Chairman of the Committee, Dr Ipalibo Harry Banigo assured Governor Wike that the committee will deliver on schedule in line with its terms of reference.

She said the audit is tool aimed at ensuring the proper use of Local Government funds for the development of the respective areas.

"The efficient running of Local Government Councils will add value to the achievement of the vision of the Governor. The committee will work in line with the terms of reference of the Governor ", she said.

No fewer than three persons were on Tuesday kidnapped in a fresh bandit attack in Dan-Ali village in Danmusa Local Government Area of Katsina State.

The attackers also robbed the residents of their money and valuables.

A resident in the community, Malam Tukur Dan Ali, while confirming the incident, said his relative was part of those kidnapped, ChannelsTv reports.

According to Dan Ali, the bandits in their dozens arrived in the village around 1:25 am on Tuesday and kidnapped three young persons, one of whom is a woman.

He added that the attackers shot into the air to scare residents.

“The bandits made several gunshots sporadically and made their way into the houses of Alhaji Musa and Alhaji Gambo where they kidnapped the three persons,” he explained.

He said the bandits had however released one of the victims, Hajiya Fatima unconditionally.

He lamented that security operatives were yet to arrive in the village even as at 5:30 a.m.

Meanwhile, efforts to reach the spokesman of the state police command, Gambo Isah, a Superintendent of Police (SP) proved abortive as calls made to his phone were not returned.

Outgoing Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode, has bade farewell to the people of the state, as his tenure ends tomorrow, May 29, 2019.


He lost his re-election bid after he failed to win the primaries of his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos last year.

The National Leader of All Progressive Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu-backed Babajide Sanwoolu, is the incoming governor of Lagos State to succeed Ambode.

Ambode, on Tuesday, published his farewell address, on his official website and social media accounts.

FULL STATEMENT:

My fellow Lagosians.

With a heart full of gratitude, I address you today for the last time as your governor. It has been an honour and a privilege of a lifetime to serve you for the last four years.

It has been a remarkable journey which has had a lasting impact on my life and I want to thank all Lagosians for the experience of these last four years.

As in the beginning when we visited every single corner of this state, listening to you and asking for your votes, I have felt the power of your support, your collective energy and the endless goodwill that has propelled us to achieve many things.

For this administration, policies, programmes and projects aimed at lifting more of our people out of poverty and making every part of the State safe, accessible and economically viable were always the priority; the driving force behind all our decisions and plans.

A few of our policies might have been unpopular but these were decisions taken with the best interest of our State in mind. With the benefit of hindsight, maybe we could have done some things differently but our intention was always clear, for the good of Lagos.

Even in those tough times, your constructive feedback and patience helped us surmount the challenges and enabled us grow stronger.

As a little boy growing up in Lagos, all I wanted was to be an accountant. This State gave me that and so much more. Our State is a land of opportunities, a home for everyone and a place where dreams come true. It is our duty and responsibility to ensure that we remain a centre of opportunities and growth for everyone; a place where people can achieve their dreams and aspirations.

From being just a commercial centre, our State has now become a prime destination for tourism, sports, entertainment and culture. And the future is even brighter with more exciting prospects and possibilities. In the near future, with God on our side, Lagos will take its rightful place in the comity of major city-States of the world.

Fellow Lagosians, it has been a remarkable journey. One in which we have pushed boundaries and moved our State to another level. A journey in which we have transformed many aspects of our State and set the ball rolling in other sectors. But there is still a lot more to be done.

But it is a job not for only the government; it is a responsibility for us all. In Lagos everyone counts and we all have a part to play.

By tomorrow, there will be a change of guard in our State. I will be stepping down and a new Governor will be sworn in. We will have a new Governor and a new administration with the same objective; achieving a better Lagos.

Those who have had the privilege of serving our dear State in different capacities especially as Governors owe their successes to your prayers, understanding and support. The same courtesy and cooperation that you gave to my predecessors from the first elected Governor of the State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande to our national leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Mr. Babatunde Raji Fashola (SAN) to my humble self, I urge you to extend same to the next administration of Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu and ensure that he succeeds. It is in our best interest to do so.

I am immensely grateful to the three arms of Government, the Executive, the Legislature and the Judiciary for their immense support throughout the tenure of our administration.

I also reserve special thanks for the leadership, elders and members of our great party, the All Progressives Congress, the Local Government Councils and community leaders, all our Security agencies, civil society groups and our religious leaders.

I also owe a debt of gratitude to the President, Muhammadu Buhari, and the Vice President, Professor Yemi Osibanjo (SAN) for their support in the last four years.

To my wife, Bolanle and the children, who have had to endure many days and nights without me; I thank you for your love and steadfastness. You will continue to be my pillar of strength.

Governor Wike says Nigeria's problems are self-inflicted

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has declared that if democracy must endure, the democratic process must be developed in a way that people will have confidence in the electoral process.

This is as Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike said that the problems of Nigeria are self-inflicted as they flow from politicization of everything and the promotion of pervasive injustice.

The Former President Spoke at a Lecture/Book Presentation to mark the Second Term Inauguration of Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike in Port Harcourt on Monday.

Jonathan stated that despite the challenges, the country must embrace electronic voting. He said that Electronic voting is the ultimate going forward.

He noted that the African Continent must come up with a minimum standards for the establishment of the Election Management Body. Jonathan said for the purpose of confidence building for credible elections, no one single person should have the power to constitute the Election Management Body.

He said: "We must come up with new standards for constituting our election management body in a way that people will have confidence. I believe in some Quarters what they do is that a body of people constitute the Election Management Body. It is not in the hands of one person.

"When you leave such responsibility in the hands of a politician, no matter how good the person is, there will be the tendency for people to suspect that the right thing is not done. When people don't have confidence in the system, whatever they do, it is difficult for the people to accept ".

He added: "The continental body , African Union , should come up with a minimum standard across Africa for constituting Electoral Management Body ".

He added that no single official should have the power to appoint all the Election Petition Tribunals as this erodes confidence in the system.

"Also, the Judicial Process where one person constitutes all the election Tribunals to hear petitions is not right. It is difficult in a democracy for somebody to be extremely neutral. In one way or the other, somebody close to you will be in one party or the other. The only way to be above is to make sure that one person does not have all the powers to constitute tribunals to listen to all cases", he said.

The Former Nigerian President called for the enthronement of independent security agencies that will provide security during elections. He decried the online video in Rivers State where women were dragging soldiers attempting to compromise Rivers elections.

"The African Union must come up with a code of conduct for security operatives that participate in elections. What happened in Rivers State, in a video being circulated where women were dragging soldiers down from walls was a very sorry sight. When these things are being discussed outside the country, if you are a Nigerian, you feel so ashamed ".

The Former President called on Parliamentarians to work towards modifying National Laws to ensure that what happened in 2019 is not repeated in 2023.

He congratulated the people of Rivers State for their total support of Governor Wike during the elections.

The Former President said that the Rivers election was a star election in 2019, as it was used to assess the elections.

"Governor Wike stood firmly. He was courageous. He was a good leader. I urge you to continue with your good works.

"If you did not impress Rivers people, you wouldn't have received support. Wike tried. He brought unity and physical development to the state", Jonathan said.

In his address, Governor Wike decried the level of politicisation of the governance process of the country.

He said: "Although I lack the intellectual impetus to join issues with the learned Professor, but for me, Nigeria’s problems, which are largely self-inflicted, can be reduced to two: the politicization of everything and pervasive injustice.



" Over the years, we have allowed the entire governing system to be been corrupted by banal politics and the courage to do what is right and fair to all parts of the country had since departed.



" As a result, we are increasingly become insensitive or rather impervious to the injustices and the horrific happenings in our country that have reduced our humanity. "

Governor Wike said that insecurity continues to thrive in the country because the nation has refused to listen to the cries for Justice.

He said: "In our case, everyone is crying out for justice and because we’ve as a nation blocked our ears and hearts to the deafening cries for justice, peace has become a rare commodity in our country. a rare commodity.



" My take is that we are going nowhere as a country; we will continue to run round in circles and possibly crash-land in a very hard way unless we change our narratives about justice because peace or peaceful co-existence cannot be decreed in a multi-cultural society such as ours, or in any society at all. It is only a real sense of justice that can command and guarantee enduring peace, patriotism and solidarity in Nigeria".

The Governor said that he was persuaded to approve the writing of the book because books document and educate people for the development of the society.

He said: " The essence of this book as captured by the short side of the title: Excellence in Governance, is truly captivating. I think, “excellence” as opposed to “perfection” in governance is attainable if leaders care about how posterity would judge them after office.



" However, since excellence in governance is not a term of art , how can it be measured in relation to the burden of leadership? Is it by simply making comparisons between governments, past and present? Or by how and to what positive extent the government of the day responded to the public issues, challenges and opportunities of the time?"



Governor Wike lauded the quality of discourse in the book, which he said promotes good governance without any form of sycophancy.

He said: "I have been managing people and resources as Governor of Rivers State for four years and it is only proper for stakeholders to start to dispassionately interrogate our performance in office, the quality of our leadership and the extent to which we have delivered public services from different perspectives.



"This book is therefore, a pioneering effort in this regard from the socio-legal perspective, which I consider very uplifting because it is not about self-serving opportunistic claims to the high moral ground nor the product of sycophantic image laundry and patronage.



" Against this background, I have no hesitation in identifying wholly with this book and commend both the editors and the contributors for their highly informative and logical arguments that elevated the legal discourse round the contemporary relationship between law, leadership and creativity in governance".

Guest Lecturer, Professor Anya O. Anya in a paper titled: "Re-imagining Nigeria: The Imperative of Democracy, values, peace and National Development in the New Nigeria " said Nigeria is a country under siege and its people and leaders are in denial.

He said: "We are at a stage where most nations are in dynamic state; where change is the order of the day. The rules of linear progression in social and economic evolution have given way to a situation where interactive forces act as interconnected matrices".

Anya said ultimately the forces of peace will prevail despite the insecurity in different parts of the country.

He said God will manifest in the end on behalf of Nigerians and stop the high level of insecurity. He urged Governor Wike to continue to work for the peace of Rivers State and Nigeria.

Book Reviewer, Prof M. T. Ladan recommended the book to all students of law and politics, because it captures the need for the development of Nigeria by examining the outstanding qualities of Governor Wike.

He said the book was written by 51 authors with 40 chapters and 735 pages. He said the lawyers who wrote the book documented the delivery of democracy dividends in Rivers State.

Book Presenter and Representative of Sokoto State Governor, Engr Bello Alhaji Suleiman described Governor Wike as a true leader who will play a key role in the future of the country.

He said Governor Wike has written his name in the sands of time by his superlative performance as chronicled in the book.

Mr Clement Oladele, the Ogun State Sector Commander of Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), said on Monday that 11 children had so far died in different road crashes in the state in 2019.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN reports that Oladele made the disclosure during the 2019 Children’s Day celebration and Road Safety Club session held at the FRSC headquarters in Abeokuta.

The sector commander disclosed that six of the children, a boy and five girls, died in a road crash at Olorunsogo in Abeokuta on Jan. 25.


He added that the FRSC had over the past 31 years of its existence placed special premium on the protection of children from traffic-related dangers.

‘‘We have devoted special attention to the propagation of Road Safety Clubs in Primary and Junior Secondary Schools where road safety ideas are being taught.

‘‘We have a total of 774 Road Safety Clubs in Primary and Secondary Schools across Ogun State.


‘‘We have also included child safety education in our public enlightenment programmes in churches, mosques and motor parks across Ogun State.

‘‘All of these efforts are to ensure that we make a difference in the everyday life of our children.

‘‘Ogun State has a peculiar traffic situation; we have a very high number of trucks plying highways in the state.

‘‘One of my saddest moments as Sector Commander was the day we lost one of our children in a road traffic crash.

‘‘She was an undergraduate of the Tai Solarin University of Education who had just concluded her internship with us here in FRSC.

‘‘The memory of the young lady still brings me pain,” he said.

Oladele urged children not to use an ear-piece when walking on the road or while on a bike and in a taxi.

‘‘You should always remind daddy and mummy of traffic rules and regulations and politely warn them against the various dangerous habits on the road,’’ he said.

Ajayi Oluwapelumi, a student of Mercyland College, Abeokuta, commended the FRSC for organising the programme.


She said the road safety club in schools had assisted the children to know more on how to conduct themselves on the roads.

Also speaking, Sanyaolu Oluwanifemi from Alaba Lawson Royal College, Abeokuta, also thanked the FRSC for the programme and called on motorists to always obey traffic rules and regulations.

He also felicitated with Nigerian children and urged leaders at all levels to recommit to the continuous empowerment of the Nigerian child.

The Senate President said, “Today, our nation celebrates its future — our children; our most important national treasure.

“As we do so, we recommit ourselves to ensuring that all Nigerian children are empowered to aspire to achieve greatness.

“On this Children’s Day 2019, we remember Leah Sharibu, and all other young Nigerian children who will be commemorating this symbolic day without their loved ones. We commit them into our prayers, and continue to call for their unequivocal release.”

He also disclosed that the 8th National Assembly worked assiduously to provide for primary healthcare fund in the budget as well as ensuring that the Child’s Rights Act is domesticated by states of the federation.

Saraki said: “Over the last four years, the 8th National Assembly has worked fervently towards ensuring the provision of basic primary healthcare and the domestication of the Childs Rights Act in all Nigerian states — so that young Nigerian Children can live healthy, violence-free lives.

“Today, we say to all Nigerian Children: “We stand with you. We are one!” Happy Children’s Day 2019.”

Reno Omokri, a former aide to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, has reacted to the declaration by the Imo State Governor, Chief Rochas Okorocha, that he will become the president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Thickmatch.com had reported that the embattled outgoing Imo Governor made the vow on Sunday during his valedictory thanksgiving service held at the Government House Chapel in Owerri.
According to Governor Okorocha, the political travails he faced now, particularly the seizure of his Certificate of Return as the Imo West senator-elect, were only his stepping stone to the presidential seat.
Okorocha berated his political adversaries who, according to him, wanted him to end up in prison.
He said he is “the most criticised politician” in the country, adding that all the ploy to stop him from going to the Senate will fail.
“I tell you, I am the most criticised person in Nigeria today. I don’t know why the entire elite hate me with cruelty.
“My Senate ambition is still a battle. More than 30 people have joined the suit to fight me. All these, I will overcome.
“They are only preparing me for the glory ahead.

“Mark it, I will be president of Nigeria. I said this on this altar so that the kingdom of God will rise against those fighting to stop me.

“Also, those who think they will put me in prison will go to prison before me,” Okorocha said.

But reacting, Omokri, in a tweet on Monday, mocked Okorocha by saying that the Governor ‘will become President of Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers’.

He wrote: “Rochas is NOT lying when he said “Mark my words, I will be president of Nigeria”.

“That prophecy is accurate. @RealRochas Okorocha will become President of Nigeria Union of Road Transport Workers. As the founder of #IBERIBERISM, he will be a good fit! #FreeLeahSharibu #RenosDarts.”
