Oyo community tackles OYSIEC over ward

Indigenes of Ofiki community in the ATISBO Local Government Development Area of Oyo State, on Wednesday, accused the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission of illegally redelineating one of its three wards to Ago-Are, which already had four.

A spokesman for the community, Sunday Olaewe, said the chairman of OYSIEC, Jide Ajeigbe, deliberately did it to favour the Ago-Are community where his wife hailed from, adding that the community would take a legal action against OYSIEC and Ajeigbe if the ward was not returned within seven days.

According to him, the act robbed the community of having a candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Olusegun Awakan, who is from Ofiki, as a councillor because the election was not held in the said ward during the last council poll conducted on May 12, 2018, in the state.

In a statement he read at a press conference in Ibadan, Olaewe noted that OYSIEC’s alleged action amounted to illegality and a breach of electoral laws of the state

He said, “Indigenes of Ofiki community and Ito quarters in the ATISBO South LCDA wish to categorically state that OYSIEC under Ajeigbe deleted the Ito/Koso ward five during the election and moved the ward to Isale Aganna with headquarters in Aganna compound, Ago-Are, without the approval of either the committee set up on the delineation of wards or that of the Oyo State House of Assembly.

“In the build-up to the election, ATISBO South LCDA, ward five, had a candidate, Awakan, who obtained and paid for a councillorship nomination form. He filled the form and submitted it to OYSIEC. He was screened and declared suitable to contest the election in the ward and never disqualified on the grounds of the non-existence of a ward or other reasons. We are submitting a letter to the state House of Assembly but if within seven days the ward is not returned to Ofiki, we will take a legal action.”

Some of the documents tendered by the indigenes showed that in one day, the OYSIEC chairman signed two documents with one giving ward five to Ito/Koso in Ofiki and another giving the same ward to Aganna area in Ago-Are. Asked if the community had confronted the chairman with questions on why the ward was reassigned to another community within a day, another community representative, Taiwo Aderoju, said Ajeigbe told them that the action was based on a petition from Ago-Are.

He said, “The chairman signed two documents on the same day which introduced controversy into the whole issue. He said the second document, which gave the ward five to Ago-Are, was signed after a petition was received. Is it possible to receive a petition on a day, set up a committee to look into it same day and take a decision without inviting concerned parties?”

Efforts by our correspondent to get the OYSIEC chairman’s reaction were not successful as he did not answer the calls or reply to a message sent to his mobile telephone number. However, in a meeting with our correspondent last week, the chairman said that he was aware of the grievance of the Ofiki people and that he had addressed it. He said that the issue of ward delineation was an ongoing action by OYSIEC.
