The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja has nullified the Akwa Ibom State governorship elections of April 11, removing the declared winner, Udom Emmanuel, from office. Mr. Emmanuel’s election was challenged by the candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Umana Umana. At the election tribunal, Mr. Emmanuel of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had secured partial victory, with the outcome of the elections cancelled only in 18 out of the state’s 31 local government areas. The tribunal had ordered a rerun. Mr. Emmanuel had challenged the ruling, insisting he won in all 31 LGAs. The APC candidate, Mr. Umana, also appealed against the ruling, seeking a total nullification of the polls. A five-man panel at the Court of Appeal on Thursday dismissed Mr. Emmanuel’s argument, and cancelled the entire elections. The appeal court said the tribunal was wrong in its refusal to comply with section 179 (2) of the Constitution. The court said having agreed with the evidence of principal witnesses, video evidence, and evidence from state collation agents, the tribunal would have concluded that there was no collation and that votes were merely allotted. “The question is, if there was no collation, can there be said to be an election,” the court asked. “ Indeed where there was no collation of election, there cannot be said to be an election.” The tribunal was wrong in failing to nullify the entire election, the court ruled, setting aside the judgement of the tribunal in the 13 LGAs. “The entire election is hereby nullified. The election that brought Mr. Udom is hereby nullified,” it ruled. The appeal court ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission to conduct fresh polls within 90 days. Nigerian troops Wednesday buried the bodies of hundreds of victims of an alleged military massacre of Shiite Muslims to hide the death toll, the Shiite Islamic Movement in Nigeria said, reports AP. Wednesday’s allegation comes as human rights advocates and the United States called for an investigation following the army’s raid on Nigerian Shiites in which hundreds of people were reportedly killed and Shiite leader Ibraheem Zakzaky suffered four bullet wounds. The military said it acted after Shiites tried to assassinate Nigeria’s army chief. Army spokesman Col. Sani Usman did not immediately respond to an email late Wednesday requesting comment on the burial charges. Details of the weekend violence in Zaria have been slow to emerge because the three attacked areas of the northern town have been on lockdown with no one allowed to enter or leave. Shiite spokesman Ibrahim Musa said soldiers took the bodies from the mortuary of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital and buried them in mass graves on Wednesday. His statement did not explain how he got the information. “The Nigerian army has desecrated our dead,” Musa said. “We hereby demand the location of the mass burial, and the interrogation of those who ordered the operation.” Human rights groups say as many as 1,000 people may have been killed. “The United States calls on the government of Nigeria to quickly, credibly, and transparently investigate these events in Zaria and hold to account any individuals found to have committed crimes,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement. “It is essential that all sides refrain from actions that further destabilize the situation,” U.S. Ambassador James Entwhistle added. Amnesty International said in a statement late Tuesday that the shooting of members of the Shiite group in Zaria “must be urgently investigated … and anyone found responsible for unlawful killings must be brought to justice.” “Whilst the final death toll is unclear, there is no doubt that there has been a substantial loss of life at the hands of the military,” said M.K. Ibrahim, director of Amnesty International, Nigeria. But the Shiite movement, which has millions of followers in Nigeria, rejected the investigative panel it said has been set up following a visit to Zaria on Tuesday by Interior Minister Abdulrahman Dambazau. Musa said it has no confidence in a panel led by the area police commander because he is junior in rank to the alleged perpetrators of the killings. details: http://www.reportsafrique.com/armyshiite-clash-army-buries-victims-to-hide-massacre-toll/

The Governor of Ekiti State, Mr Ayodele Fayose, has raised alarm over what he calls a plan by the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to upturn the judgement of the Supreme Court on the 2014 governorship election. Mr Fayose at a press conference in Lagos on Sunday said that there were attempts by the ruling party to use the military inquiry reports when delivered to upturn the Supreme Court judgement. The military had constituted a panel of inquiry into the operations of its officials in the governorship election, after the APC alleged that the military connived with the Peoples Democratic Party (Mr Fayose’s party) to rig the election in Fayose’s favour. “They went to Kaduna and after all submissions, they want to now come up and say that military rigged Ekiti election. The US state department is warning Americans not to travel to Burundi as political violence there increases. A travel warning issued on Sunday urges US citizens in the central African country to leave “as soon as it is feasible to do so”. On Friday, 87 people were killed after three military sites were attacked, Burundi’s army said. US rights group Human Rights Watch (HRW) on Sunday called for an investigation into the killings. Protests in Burundi began in April when President Pierre Nkurunziza announced he would seek a third term in office. Last month, Belgium advised its citizens to leave Burundi, while the EU cut staff levels, temporarily evacuating employees’ “families and part of the non-essential staff”. “As a result of continuing violence, the Department of State ordered the departure of dependents of US government personnel and non-emergency US government personnel from Burundi,” the US statement read. “The US Embassy is able to offer only very limited emergency services to US citizens in Burundi.” It also gave advice for citizens who may encounter violence, advising them to stay indoors in ground floor rooms, away from doors and windows. Media captionThe BBC’s Alistair Leithead: “The dead have been appearing nearly every day” Col Gaspard Baratuza said 87 people were killed in clashes in the country’s capital, Bujumbura, on Friday – 79 “enemies” and eight soldiers and policemen. Witnesses told AFP that some of those killed were shot execution-style with their arms tied round their backs. Carina Tertsakian, HRW’s researcher for Burundi, called for a “serious and independent” enquiry into the killings. “This is by far the most serious incident, with the highest number of victims, since the start of the crisis in April,” she said. “A serious, independent investigation is urgently needed to find out the exact circumstances in which these people were killed.” A resident looks at bodies of men killed during gunfire in the Nyakabiga neighbourhood of Burundi's capital BujumburaImage copyrightReuters Image captionWitnesses said men were shot “through the top of the skull” BBC Africa analyst Richard Hamilton said bodies on the streets were almost a daily occurrence in Bujumbura, but that this was the largest number of deaths in one night. Violent clashes hit Burundi in April, a day after President Pierre Nkurunziza launched his bid for a third term in office. According to the UN, at least 240 people have been killed and more than 200,000 have fled to neighbouring countries since April, raising fears of a civil war. http://www.reportsafrique.com/burundi-crisis-us-tells-its-citizens-to-leave/

At 11:30 Am yesterday delegates of the C.P.D.M met at the Unity palace for a meeting called upon by Paul Biya. He declared his resignation as president of Cameroon few hours ago as a motive of health and a change to bring democracy. This is very surprising as many don’t understand why the president who has made 30 years in power decided to quit without any plan of a next leader. Now the question is. What will become of Cameroon now and who is going to be our next leader? Cameroon on a state of confusion at the moment every one wonders how the new government will look like. Some are happy and some are putting on sad faces. Paul Biya is presently in France to meet the French president Francoise Hollande to discuss about his sudden resignation as president. The issue is still pending and we will get back to you with more details. http://www.reportsafrique.com/paul-biya-resigns-as-president-of-cameroon/

Just when we thought that the ills and omens of the past administrations are far behind us, we are once again faced with one of the very elements for which they we crucified and castigated. During the last fuel scarcity we had under former President Jonathan, the apostles of the then opposition, the APC rode on the back of such age long institutional malady largely orchestrated by inordinate covetousness and the obnoxious policy of subsidy, to mendaciously confuse the Nigerian people into believing that it was Jonathan’s delinquency. Now it is crystal clear to everyone that it is Nigeria’s fault. The same Buhari who once said that there is nothing called subsidy has now approved N413b for payment of subsidy. But it rather came a bit late because we are already faced with its gory effect. Lies and propaganda can win elections at the polls, but it will be foolhardy of one to think that those strategies can sustain a government, this is one fact APC and their cronies need to come to terms with. In the previous times, we were battling to clear subsidy debts of N200b and about that range, but today it is disheartening that even the N413b already proposed by this government is only a part payment to the monies owed the oil marketers. This is unfortunately a magnanimous deterrent to our shaky economy and quickly calls for a fast governmental action. And with the new cabinet recently commissioned, this government is expected to hit the ground running by developing their economic blueprints so we know where the nation is heading to and how best to salvage our ever dwindling economy. Today we have seen petrol prices rise to its all high of N1000 per litre in the black markets. Most filling stations sell at prices ranging from N150 to N250 per litre. The hardship this unfortunate situation has caused Nigerians, especially the poor masses is untold. But even before this slow government reacts to this socio economic gridlock caused by fuel scarcity, individuals and organisations should learn to show their altruism and love for humanity. Most oil marketers take advantage of this national mayhem to aggrandise their selfish moans and thus escalate the sufferings of the ordinary masses. But even in the midst of this inhumanities and bizarre economic frustrations, one man has carved a niche for himself in the annals of posterity and the wellbeing of humanity; he is Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, the CEO of Capital oil and Gas Industries Ltd. On May 24th of this year, in the midst of the last fuel scarcity, Dr Ifeanyi Ubah, through his company, Capital Oils took a giant stride in rescuing the nation in its most enigmatic time, for which posterity will forever smile at him for that. At a time when all the oil marketers have unanimously decided not to release the products to the stations until their subsidy demands are met, Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah personally took it upon himself to bring the strike to an end, for the love of his people and country. He announced and actually released 13million litres of petrol products across the nation. This brave move from a man that cares for humanity was one of the major turnaround which caused the other marketers to rethink and go back to business. He minded less the consequences and the sanctions that are most likely to come his way, his passion and drive to see a better humanity has always been his watchword. It could be recalled that in the wake of that same scarcity of that time, his company, Capital oil ltd were the only filling station in the entire South East that sold the Premium Motor Spirit at the official pump price of N87 per litre. All these moves were not engineered by any political, ethnic or religious reasons; rather they were borne purely out of his affection for humanity. Ifeanyi is one man that should be said to have a crush on mankind. His spirit of altruism and patriotism is colossal and emulative. His strong belief in deregulation of the oil sector is the most reliable solution to the menace we currently face in that sector. By that very act alone, he has set himself as a beacon of hope for the teeming poor masses in our nation, and through his Ifeanyi Ubah Foundation he has met the needs of most wailing Nigerians. By that very act, he has demonstrated that the cries and moans of the poor are his ringtones and his push to hearken to these national cries is the definition of his existence on earth. By that quantum leap, he has shown the youth and the world indeed that some risks are worth taking especially when these risks will at the long run help to promote humanity and enhance good living especially among the many poor in the world. By that very act, he could rightly be adjudged a moral icon and a man who delights and craves for a better world for all of us. It takes a whale of a moral courage to achieve such feat, especially in a majorly diversified nation like ours. Yet he took that step to bring smiles to the many even at his own expense and the expense of the few. And having pleased God so well by this act, it is not out of place if I claim that God has really blessed him the more through that. Nigeria needs more Ifeanyi Ubahs. We need people of his ilk in our leadership positions. Why we suffer most times is that most of our current leaders are largely unconcerned with the heart beats of the poor that voted them into power. If only we can have people like Ifeanyi Ubah in every state of the federation, our states would have been long developed and our poverty level must have reduced drastically. Now that we still battle with another case of fuel scarcity, we need more able Nigerians who can stand tall, firm and determined to change the story lines and alleviate the tortures of the people for God and for humanity. God bless Nigeria! http://www.reportsafrique.com/fuel-scarcity-the-lessons-from-ifeanyi-ubahs-patroitism/
