Donald Trump has once again shown he cares for two things important to millions of Americans: veterans and faith. On Saturday evening, he gave an address at the Celebrate Freedom concert at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. The event was hosted by Pastor Robert Jeffress and the church where he's the senior pastor, First Baptist in Dallas. It was held in honor of men and women who have served in the armed forces. The president spoke about religious freedom in America. “We love our country, we love our families, we love our freedom and we love our God,” he said. He pointed back to the roots of religious freedom in the United States and held that this freedom is only found in God. “Since the signing of the Declaration of Independence 241 years ago, America always affirmed that Liberty comes from our Creator,” he said. “Our rights are given to us by God, and no earthly force can ever take those rights away.” And he talked about how religious and civil liberties have come under attack. “For too long, politicians have tried, oh have they tried, to centralize the authority among the hands of a small few. In our nation’s capital,” he said. “Bureaucrats think they can run over your lives, overrule your values, meddle in your faith, and tell you how to live, what to say, and where to pray.” He then affirmed the idea that families and churches are the building blocks of a healthy culture. “But we know that parents, not bureaucrats, know best how to raise children and create a thriving society,” he said. “And we know that families and churches, not government officials, know best how to create a strong and loving community.” “And above all else we know this: In America, we don’t worship government, we worship God,” he added The message resonates with evangelicals who voted for Trump in hopes that their freedom to practice their religious faith and traditional values would be safeguarded. The president also honored America's veterans. “For my very first Independence Day celebration as president, there is no place I’d rather be than with you,” he said. He said he's working to ensure they are cared for. “Just the other day, we signed [the] Veterans Accountability [act]. They’ve been trying to do it for 40 years,” said President Trump. Trump explained that the act streamlines the process of firing Veterans Affairs employees who are incompetent in their jobs or commit fraudulent acts against veterans. “Now, you can say, ‘you’re fired,’” he added. The president offered the veterans heartfelt thanks and asked them to stand. “You’ve shed your blood, you’ve poured your love, and you’ve bared your soul in defense of our country, our people, and our great American flag,” he said. “You raced through gunfire, stared down enemy forces and ran past the gates of hell to fight and to win for America, and you’ve won for America. Throughout his address, the president's message was clear: he cares about faith and about defending it. “Not only has God bestowed on us the gift of freedom, he’s also given us the gift of heroes willing to give their lives to defend that freedom,” he said.http://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/politics/2017/july/lsquo-in-america-we-don-rsquo-t-worship-government-we-worship-god-rsquo-says-trump-at-veterans-event |
An Iraqi Christian girl kidnapped by ISIS has been returned to her family after being missing for three years. Christina Abada, who is nearly six years old, was reunited with her parents this morning at Ashti refugee camp, near Erbil, Iraq, according to World Watch Monitor. She was abducted by ISIS militants three years ago, and was reportedly returned to safety by Iraqi Special Forces. 'It is a very happy moment; everybody is dancing and clapping and singing,' said one Christian woman, a witness to the reunion. 'She looks OK, quite healthy. I believe she must have been in the house of a family who took good care of her. She was even wearing gold earrings, so it must have been a wealthy family,' she added. The woman cautioned however: 'Although everybody was very happy, it was also sad to see that Christina herself is in shock about all the people around her. Everybody is asking questions and speaking to her, but she does not say anything back, really. She also seems to be overwhelmed by the huge crowd of people welcoming her.' Christina was taken from her family in 2014, when ISIS entered and occupied Qaraqosh, the then predominantly Christian city and home to the Abadas family. On 22 August, militants abruptly seized Christina from her mother Ayda, and walked away, forcing Ayda back at gunpoint. Since then, Christina had not been seen again. In several interviews, the Abadas family spoke about their longing to see their child again.https://www.christiantoday.com/article/iraqi.christian.girl.kidnapped.by.isis.returns.home.after.3.years.missing/109910.htm |
How do you express grief when you experience something sad or painful? Customs vary around the world. One example is when people attend funerals and choose to wear black. Or a widow might wear a dark veil after the passing of her husband to cover her face during her time of sadness. These are expressions of grief, sadness and loss, familiar in our own culture. The Old Testament has stories of people tearing their clothes. texbeck In the Bible, many individuals ripped apart their clothes to express strong emotion such as shame, anger, or mourning. Let's take Reuben, for example. Genesis 37:29 says that when Reuben found out that his brothers had sold Joseph off as a slave, he was shocked and 'ripped his garments apart'. A few days later when their father, Jacob, was tricked into believing that his son Joseph had been killed by a wild animal, he too ripped his garment apart. 'Then Jacob tore his clothes, put on sackcloth and mourned for his son many days. All his sons and daughters came to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. "No," he said, "I will continue to mourn until I join my son in the grave." So his father wept for him' (Genesis 37:34-3) Job also 'ripped apart his garment' when he heard that all his children had been killed (Job 1: 18-20). Before bringing the tragic news to Eli that the Israelites had been defeated in the battle and that Eli''s sons had been killed, a messenger ripped his clothes apart (1 Samuel 4:12-17). Lastly David and all the men with him ripped their clothes when Saul and Jonathan were killed – 'All the men with him took hold of their clothes and tore them. They mourned and wept and fasted till evening for Saul and his son Jonathan' (2 Samuel 1:11-12). Tearing your clothes marked tragic situations, particluarly death, shock or shame. The exception, however, was the high priest, who was not allowed to tear his clothes. Leviticus 21:10 says: 'The high priest, the one among his brothers who has had the anointing oil poured on his head and who has been ordained to wear the priestly garments, must not... tear his clothes'. The special nature of the high priestly office gave a separation from some of the common customs for ordinary people, including that of mourning. Tearing one's clothes was clearly a public and powerful expression of grief in ancient times. Even today, the practice is continued in the Jewish community and is calledKeriah. However, it is less spontaneous and more ceremonial. One tradition says that the mourner must tear the clothing over the heart – a sign of a broken heart.https://www.christiantoday.com/article/why.did.people.in.the.old.testament.tear.their.robes/109889.htm |

A new studyby Israeli researchers found that a man cannot become a woman by simply "identifying" as one and vice versa. Geneticists from Israel's Weizmann Institute of Science discovered certain genes that are only expressed in women, while others are only expressed in men. Professor Shmuel Pietrokovski and Dr. Moran Gershoni studied 20,000 genes, sorting them by sex, and searching for differences in expression in each tissue. They eventually found around "6,500 genes with activity that was biased toward one sex or the other in at least one tissue, adding to the already major biological differences between men and women." Some of the biggest differences were in genes responsible for body hair, fat storage, muscle building, and milk production for breastfeeding. The researchers also found that biological sex also plays a role in preventing specific illnesses. For example, some genes expressed only in the left ventricle of the heart in women work to protect their hearts from disease until the women reach menopause. Another gene, in the liver, processes drugs differently according to the gender. Essentially, their research means more than 21 percent of the entire human genome, which is composed of about 30,000 genes, are based on sex -- something a sex change operation and hormones cannot replace. Mat Staver, founder and chairman of Liberty Counsel, says this research affirms God's creation.http://www1.cbn.com/cbnnews/health/2017/may/new-israeli-research-reveals-that-men-are-men-and-women-are-women |
