Health / Here Are Some Reasons Why You May Get More Mosquito Bite by reterdeen: 2:00pm On Oct 28, 2019

Mosquitoes are a thorn in the flesh. From the aggressive way in which they infest on your body to the annoying sounds they make in your ear, they can essentially drive you crazy. Let’s not even get started with the higher chance of getting malaria fever from their bites.

While mosquitoes are attracted to humans in general, there are certain people who they love biting the most. These people are called mosquito magnets because they get more mosquito bites than other people.

Here are 4 things that might be making you more appealing to mosquitoes.

Breathing

When we breathe, we inhale oxygen and release carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide acts as a stimulant for mosquitoes. It triggers them to fly and fly more quickly. Secondly, carbon dioxide attracts mosquitoes to their host. They use this carbon dioxide to find their target. Interestingly, they only get attracted to carbon dioxide when people release it in large amounts. This means that things that make you breathe more deeply can make you more attractive to mosquitoes. For example, pregnant women are more susceptible to mosquito bites because they breathe more deeply. Also, exercise is another activity that makes people breathe deeply, hence attracting mosquitoes.

Sweat

Another thing that can make you more appealing to mosquitoes is your sweat. When you go for a run or engage in some other activity, your body releases sweats that contain compounds such as lactic acid, uric acid, and ammonia. All these acids make your sweat smell in such a way that they attract mosquitoes. So, if you want to lower your chances of getting bit by mosquitoes, you should endeavour to get rid of sweaty smell by showering after you sweat.

Dark-Coloured Clothes

Surprisingly, the kinds of clothes you wear can also make you prone to mosquito bites. A lot of studies suggest that mosquitoes like landing on dark-coloured surfaces. So, if your wardrobe is full of red-coloured, blue-coloured, and black coloured clothes, then you’ve probably found one of the reasons why you are a mosquito target.

Drinking Alcohol

One small study suggests that drinking a bottle of beer can can make you a target for mosquitoes. The study revealed that people who had just recently drunk a bottle of beer were more likely to get bitten by mosquitoes. However, the study could not pinpoint why mosquitoes landed more on people who drank alcohol.

Of course, there’s no way you can stop breathing, sweating, wearing your favourite dark outfits, and drinking alcohol (that’s if you drink). But you can always get rid of mosquitoes by fleeting your house, keeping yours surroundings clean, and using repellants. Remember, mosquito bites are not only discomforting but can also lead to malaria fever. So, stay safe.

Education / The Remarkable History Of The Airplane: How Man Began To Fly by reterdeen: 5:49pm On Sep 12, 2019
When you do something repeatedly for a very long time, you get bored and start wanting to experiment with other things right? Yes. At least, that’s what man thought when he began fantasizing about how to navigate the air like birds.

This had been a puzzling concept for man from time immemorial. He had made several attempts at flight using diverse means but to no avail. It wasn’t until the nineteenth century that significant progress was made in the attempts to fly.

But how did man actualise his dream of flying? Let’s take a brief walk through airplane history

Leonardo Da Vinci and the Ornithopter

Ornithopters may not be so practical in this time and age but there was a time they were considered to be the ideal means of flying. When the Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci became consumed with the field of aviation, he came up with the concept of the Ornithopter and designed a plan for it. His chief source of inspiration were the simple yet elegant creatures called birds.

Leonardo was intrigued by how birds soared through the skies effortlessly. As a result, he sought to invent a wing-flapping device that would lift man off the ground while attached to his arms. Unfortunately, Leonardo soon realised that the concept was not feasible as it would take more than just wings attached to arms for man to fly. The genius, however, sketched the device which we now know as the Ornithopter. For centuries after that, the Ornithopter would continue to be known as the device capable of flying but lacking the technology to lift man off the ground.

Sir George Cayley and the Conceptualisation of the Airplane

From the 15th century – the da Vinci era- to the 18th century, several concepts for flight were conceived but no significant progress was made. It wasn’t until the 19th century that the French Bayonet Sir George Cayley conceived the idea for a machine that would rely on a pair of opposite-facing wings, a propulsion system, and control surfaces. This idea was what laid the groundwork for the modern airplane. With this knowledge, George Cayley went on to build the prototype of the airplane.
A replica of George Cayley’s airplane prototype

Although, this model of the airplane was crude, it kicked off a new era that would see the rise of several machines capable of flight. George Cayley also correctly identified the forces which would indeed make flight possible: weight, drag, lift, and thrust. In the subsequent years, various inventors would begin using his model to test and experiment with the idea of the airplane.Wilbur and Orville Wright are the most notable of them for their success in inventing the first powered aircraft.

Two Siblings With the Passion to Fly

Following George Caley’s significant contributions to the concept of flight, simple aircrafts called gliders began to gain prominence among investors. By the late 1890s, Otto Lilienthal, the famous German scientist who was dubbed “flying man” had succeeded in flying over 2000 gliders. Unfortunately, Otto Lilienthal died in a gliding crash in 1896.

Inspired by the work of Otto Lilienthal, two brothers, Wilbur and Orville Wright set out on their work with aerodynamic surfaces. This would lead to the creation of the world’s first controlled, sustained, powered aircraft.

Neither of the Wright brothers finished high school but they both had an innate capacity to understand mechanics. They had also gained extensive knowledge about bicycles which had gained a lot of popularity in 1896. In fact, it was their work with bicycles that gave them an understanding of the forces required to control a flying machine in mid-air.

In 1902, after several unsuccessful attempts, the Wright brothers built their first controlled gliding machine using the principles of aerodynamics. Following this success, they were convinced it was time to build a powered aircraft.

Their next step was to acquire an engine light yet powerful enough to propel a flying machine. No manufacturer possessed an engine of this sort, hence they proceeded to build their own. On December 17th 1903, the Wright brothers had successfully built the first heavier-than-air powered aircraft called Wright Flyer; they launched it on a hill with sufficient breeze.

The first flight, which was conducted by Orville Wright 10:35 am, travelled 120 feet in 12 seconds at a speed of 6.8 miles per hour. The Wright brothers conducted three more flights which lasted for longer periods of time and travelled at greater distances.

They had made history by building the first powered aircraft and this set the pace of a new era of foundation. In the coming years, many budding pilots would study the brothers’ work and build aircrafts which would eventually surpass the Wright Flyer. This successive progress in aviation has led to the development of the several variations of flying machines which we now know today. Aeroplanes, float planes, bomber, and helicopters are just a few to mention.

Education / 5 Fruits And Vegetables You Did Not Know Were Man-made by reterdeen: 8:07pm On Sep 11, 2019
When it comes to fruits and vegetables, we always tend to think all of them grew natural but is not every fruit, and vegetable we consume that are natural, somewhere man-made. When I say man-made, I don’t mean it was made by machine but rather a process known as selective breeding. Selective breeding is a process where plants with similar traits are replanted. Here is a list of five common fruits, and vegetables that we consider as natural but there are not.

Orange

Although there are many varieties of oranges in the world today, each variety can be traced back to the man-made hybrid made by crossing the pomelo with the mandarin. The pomelo as a bitter taste like the grapefruit, but the Mandarin is sweet. Many people tend to mistake the Mandarin as a variety of orange, but that’s wrong. Even though the mandarin has an orange color, it is not a variety, but rather an ancestor of the orange. There are many histories about the origin of the orange; however the most common of them is that the orange originated from Southern China.

Banana

Banana is one of my favorite food especially when it is eaten with groundnut on a sunny afternoon. However, the banana is a man-made hybrid of Musa acuminata a Musa balbisiana banana species. Musa balbisiania has a sweet taste but contains plenty of seeds while Musa acuminata has a very fleshy inside. Both bananas were crossbreed in the forests of southern Asia, but the resultant banana was sterile. When early humans found out about the hybrid, they learned they could replant the shoots to create new trees, so they engaged in selective breeding and planted banana with favorable traits. The result is the banana we all enjoy today. It may interest you to know that banana may go extinct if we stop planting them because they are not grown from seeds.

Tangelo

The delicious Tangelo is a man-made hybrid of the Pomelo and the tangerine. Tangelos are believed to have first appeared in the forests of South-East Asia about3,500 years ago when some certain insects cross-pollinated the Mandarin with a grape-like fruit. However, the modern tangelos are as a result of a selective breeding program that began in the 1800s. The tangelo got its name from the first three letters of the tangerine and last two letters of pomelo.

Carrot

The carrots we have today are orange, but do you know that carrots were naturally purple or white, and were inedible? The orange carrots we have today is a hybrid of the yellow carrot (a hybrid of the white carrot). The earliest-known edible carrots appeared in Persia during the 20 century. While some account stated it was white, some argued it was purple. Selective breeding continued to improve the flavor and color, this resulted in the changing of color from purple or white to yellow and to the orange we have today.

Strawberry

The modern strawberry is a man-made hybrid of a small wild strawberry. This little wild strawberry has a great flavor, aroma and shorter shelf life. Today’s strawberry came into limelight in France during the 18th century.

Stephen King

It is hard to believe that the man who would captivate the world with his horror fiction had his first novel “Carrie” rejected 30 times.

Like anyone would, King was discouraged after the series of rejections from book publishers and dumped the novel in a trash can. But for the intervention his wife, we probably won’t know Stephen King today. She retrieved the book from the can and persuaded him to submit for the 31st time.

This led to his big break and his successful career which will see the sales of over 300 million copies of his books.

Michael Jordan

Throughout his career, Michael Jordan has always preached the importance of learning from one’s failure and he has lived according to what he preaches. In his words:

“I have missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot, and I missed. I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”

Although Michael Jordan has performed amazing feats in his career and is arguably the greatest basketball player of all time, he was once removed from his high school team for being “too short”.

Jack Ma

If there is one great example of a success story, it is Jack Ma. Prior to his success as an e-commerce tycoon, he failed multiple times in many of his endeavours.

He failed his university entrance exams three times, applied to Harvard ten times but was rejected each time and applied for 30 different jobs which all rejected him. On top of that, Jack Ma was the only applicant out of 24 people to be rejected by KFC.

Despite these failures and more, Jack Ma pulled through, ventured into the world of e-commerce, and the rest is history.

Oprah Winfrey

Oprah has earned the title of “Queen of All Media” and is one of the most influential women in the world. Life, however, was not always rosy for the media mogul.

After landing her first TV job as an anchor, Oprah was fired by the producer for being too “unfit for television”. Like most determine folks, she went on to launch her TV show, The Oprah Winfrey Show which would rise to become the one of the highest-rated shows in history.

JK Rowling

JK Rowling started out as a divorced, impoverished, and depressed single mom who wrote when she was less busy. After managing to finish the manuscript for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, she submitted it to 12 publishing houses who all rejected her book.

A year later, a publisher agreed to publish the book because his daughter had read it and fallen in love with it. This would lead to more deals and the rise of the “Harry Potter” brand. Today, she is one of the richest women in the world.

Walt Disney

The man who would revolutionalise entertainment and pioneer a new age of animated films was once told by his newspaper editor that “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.” Unfazed, Walt continued in his creative endeavours and would turn out to be the most successful animator of all time.

Albert Einstein

As a child, Albert Einstein had speech difficulties and was thought to be mentally handicapped. His life wasn’t any easier as a teenager. He had problems with his teachers and eventually failed his entrance exam into the prestigious Zurich Polytechnic (although he was outstanding in Physics and Maths).

Determined, Einstein intensified his efforts and passed the entrance exam into the Zurich Federal Polytechnic School.

He went on to win a Nobel Prize and is still recognized for how much he contributed to Physics.

Robert Downey Jr.

Known for his sensational role as Iron Man, Robert Downey Jr. is perhaps the biggest success story in entertainment today.

Initially, Robert started on a good note in his career, winning the hearts of many with his exceptional performances in his early movies and landing big roles. His career hit a breaking point when he got into drug use and was in and out of prison. By the time he got back into acting, many had written him off.

Nevertheless, he ventured into mainstream acting once again and began to gain more recognition until his role in ‘Iron Man’ which gave him phenomenal success. Today, he is not only one of the successful actors in Hollywood but has left his legacy as ‘Ironman’ – Robert is Iron Man and Iron Man is Robert.

Jim Carrey

For such a hilarious fellow, Jim Carrey didn’t start out in life on a happy note. He grew up in poverty and once worked as a janitor in order to support his family.

During his first stand-up performance, he was booed off the stage. He auditioned many times for Saturday Night Live but was rejected each time.

Eventually, Jim Carrey achieved phenomenal success in Hollywood and brought us some of the most hilarious comedy movies of all time.

Science/Technology / 5 Future Technologies That Will Change The Way We Live by reterdeen: 7:46pm On Sep 09, 2019
Among all the brilliant technologies that will impact the world in the future, there are some that stand out for their ingenuity and the implications they hold for humanity.
Here are 5 emerging technologies that will greatly impact the way we live in future.

Graphene

Graphene has been a major topic of interest in the research world since it was discovered. This intriguing material is not only the tiniest but also one of the strongest substances known to man, having a strength 200 times that of steel. Dubbed a “supermaterial”, Graphene has the potential to be be applied to a variety of fields. These include solar cells, internet connectivity, batteries, lightweight, and various industrial and chemical processes.

The Hyperloop

The brilliant concept of the Hyperloop was first proposed by Elon Musk in 2013. This invention will disrupt the transportation industry in future and change the way people move from one place to another. It is expected to travel at a speed faster than sound, surpassing the speed any commercial plane can currently travel at. The design for the Hyperloop will consist of capsules which will blast through steel tubes at high speeds and accomodate a large number of passengers. If the Hyperloop materialises, it will promote clean energy and make transportation even more efficient.

Artificial Intelligence (Ai)

Artificial intelligence refers to the ability of machines to exhibit human behaviours. It is perhaps the most controversial emerging technologies on this list. Over the years, it has raised concerns about its ethics and the implications it has on the survival of the human race. From concerns about robots taking our jobs to theories about a robot apocalypse, Artificial Intelligence has raised several debates. However, AI also comes with its fair share of advantages. There is no denying that it will make life easier for everyone.

Wireless Energy Transfer

This refers to the method of getting energy from one point to another without the need for wires. To an extent, this technology already exists in the form of Wi-Fi which connects to phone and laptops. In future, the applications for wireless energy transfer will not only be limited to Wi-Fi but will cut across electric cars, Internet of Things, and solar energy.

Self Driving Cars

Although we may not have flying cars anytime soon, we can look forward to cars that will drive themselves with little or no human input. With Companies such as Google and Tesla already taking advantage of this technology, it has the potential to change the way we live in the future.

The implications of self driving cars are vast from a higher rate of unemployment to the end of the automobile industry itself. In the US alone, the number of people choosing to purchase cars is on a gradual decline as more people are opting for ride-sharing services such as Uber. This will make the role of drivers more redundant in the coming future, bringing about the advent of self driving or autonomous cars.

TV/Movies / The 10 Most Iconic Movie Heroes Of All Time by reterdeen: 12:39pm On Sep 09, 2019
Of course, we always love movie heroes. They are the ones who rush in to save the day, defeat the bad guys and bring order to the world.

For a long time in history, these characters have influenced culture and have demonstrated qualities that inspire many.

These are our top picks for the most iconic movie heroes of all time.

James Bond – The James Bond Movies

In the words of Ian Fleming, the author who created James Bond, “every man wants to be James Bond and every woman wants to be with him”. This, in a nutshell, captures why people have been obsessed with the James Bond Movies for decades.

James Bond is the ultimate super-spy. He exudes, charisma, charm, and a dogged resolve to always execute his missions. It is these qualities that make him bed the most beautiful women, destroy all his obstacles, and save the world when it is at the brink of destruction.

When you watch James Bond, you start thinking you are a super-spy yourself. This is what makes him one of the best movie heroes of all time.

And who doesn’t love the line?: “My name is Bond, James Bond.”

Atticus Finch – To Kill a Mockingbird

Atticus Finch is not only a great father to his children but also a man who prevails over extreme circumstances of racism. He is a man with a strong sense of morality, courage, and purpose. The American Film Institute named Atticus Finch the greatest movie hero of the 20th century and this can’t be any more accurate.

Batman – The Batman Movies

We all have something we fear and wish to overcome. There is no better character to draw inspiration from than the protector of Gotham city. Batman’s past is dark and tragic yet he rises from his state of despair and resolves to fight against evil. He also overcomes his fear of bats and uses this fear as a symbol of his identity. He has been through the most inhuman of conditions but he chooses never to give up.

Frodo – Lord of The Rings

Frodo Baggins starts out as an ordinary elf but soon has to bear the weight of the world and defeat the ultimate evil, Sauron. Frodo represents all of us who have a crucial goal to achieve but have to overcome our negative impulses and the incessant urge to give up.

Superman – Superman| Man of Steel

The Man of Steel himself, Superman is the ultimate superhero in the Marvel and DC universe. He is an invincible, incredibly strong and optimistic hero. There have been several movie adaptations of Superman over the years but one quality that has remained with the character is his unshakable resolve to fight for social justice. Although he possesses superhuman strength, he never fails to tamper justice with compassion and restraint.

William Wallace – Braveheart

William Wallace is one of the most tragic movie heroes of all time because of the way actor Mel Gibson portrays him in the 1995 epic film Brave Heart. Who else is braver than the rugged William Wallace who led a rebellion against tyranny and ultimately gave up his life for his people?

T.E Lawrence – Lawrence of Arabia

There is something endearing about movie heroes that leave their homes, embark on a journey, overcome difficult trials and come back transformed. We’ve seen this pattern play out in many movie heroes such as ‘Frodo’ from “The Lord of The Rings”, ‘Neo’ from “The Matrix”, and ‘Chief Brody’ from “Jaws”. But one movie hero that accurately depicts the ‘hero’s journey’ is no other than T.E Lawrence from ‘Lawrence of Arabia’. Lawrence starts out as a misfit lieutenant who embarks on an assignment, impresses everyone with his clever ideas and eventually takes up the role of a leader. Lawrence’s journey ultimately makes him a better version of himself.

Travis Bickle – Taxi Driver

It can get boring watching movie heroes who only portray the good side of human nature. This is where Travis Bickle comes in. He is not your typical hero who is always trying to do good. Travis Bickle is the ultimate anti-hero. He is a man who has been deprived of his powers and resorts to violence and rage to get it back. His violent acts may be unacceptable to many but he does it all with good intentions.

The Tramp – Kid Auto Races at Venice & Modern Times

There are some heroes who seem to save the day no matter how hard they try to fail. Such heroes are referred to as the ‘accidental hero’ and they are often found in comedies. They are clumsy but things always turn out in their favour. We have to give this one to no one other The Tramp played by the iconic Charlie Chaplin.

Rocky – Rocky Balboa

Rocky starts out from the gutter but pushes himself to the top through hard work and sheer will power. He wants to be a winner so badly that he is willing to do anything to achieve it. You come out feeling like a champion when you watch Rocky Balboa because of how iconic the character Rocky is.

Which movie hero do you find the most iconic?

She has been known to call the athlete repeatedly and cry over the phone begging him to accept the child and the truth.

Furthermore, she also dropped out of college after giving her baby up for the said amount of money and wanted the child back. Furthermore, she claimed that the football player met her and a friend at a nightclub before going to the hotel room.

Obviously, Ronaldo did not accept having such an affair. And with little and not enough evidence to charge him with this crime, the allegations were dropped. A parallel investigation showed similar sexual charges against other footballers as well. So as we can nearly conclude, this might have been a scam as well.

3. $8 Million Donation in Nepal Earthquake (Fake News)

The whole world rejoiced when Ronaldo was reported by a French magazine to have donated 8 million dollars to the earthquake victims in Nepal. However, little did they know that this news is not true? He did tweet and support the Nepal victims by encouraging the charity ‘Save the Children’ and asking his fans to donate whatever they can to their trust fund.

According to reports, he admitted that he is not jealous of the friendship or the chemistry between the MSN trio but also prefers to be alone. He said that the players have a good time with each other and have good bonding… but that doesn’t mean that he has any less of friends. He likes to have it his own style.

The athlete is said to be an introvert with not many ‘friends’ in the team but also respects the other players to the fullest. He admitted that his only goal is to play well and remain a good player until the end. He doesn’t care for friendships or bondings, according to reports.

1. Questioning The Standard of His Real Madrid Teammates on 27th February 2016

There is a time in everyone’s life where he/ she questions his surroundings and the people they deal with. This moment was that time for CR7. This world-famous Athlete quoted “If the whole team was in my level, we’d be first’’. Now, this is a bit rude and hurtful to other team member and that’s why the controversy took place.

He also blamed it on the injuries that the players got during the games.

5. As enormous as these sea creatures are, they feed on tiny animals called krills. A whale’s stomach can hold up to 2200 pounds of krills at a time. In fact, they feed on almost 9000 of these crustaceans daily and a whopping 40 million krills daily during the summer.

6. In addition to being the largest, blue whales are the loudest animals on the planet. Their calls can be heard from up to 1000 miles (1,600 kilometers) away.

7. Blue whales are among the planet’s oldest living creatures. Their average life span is around 80 to 90 years and they can live for up to 100 years.

8. Despite their large size, blue whales are excellent swimmers. They cruise the ocean at about 8 km/hr and can reach speeds of over 30 km/hr.

9. Blue whale calves weigh up to 27,000 kg and can measure up to 26 feet in length, making them the biggest babies on earth.

10. They are a rich source of oil. Due to this discovery, they were hunted for decades, leading to a drastic decrease in their numbers. It wasn’t until 1967 that they received worldwide protection, saving them from mass extinction.

11. Due to climate change and the impact of ship strikes, The International Union for Conservation classifies them as Endangered. The entire population of blue whales left ranges from about 10,000 to 20,000.

12. Perhaps due to their long life span, blue whales have the ability to form bonds with other living creatures. They are said to be affectionate towards those who rescue them, suggesting that they have feelings.

13. A female blue whale has an interesting manner in which it nurtures its young. It will lift its newborn calf to the surface of the ocean in order for it to breath in some air. Other females around may also assist in nudging the young calf to the surface of the water to breathe.

Science/Technology / Top 7 Events That Could Lead To The End Of The World by reterdeen: 11:47am On Apr 14, 2019
The world we currently live in is more delicate than we think. Although I’m not conforming to the widespread and still growing idea that the end is near, I agree that anything could cause a global collapse. The fact is no one can predict when the end will come or what will cause it. however, scientists have come up with possible scenarios that could lead to the end of the world. Here are the top 7:

Asteroid Impact
According to science, our world is not the only thing that exists in the solar system. There are other planets and debris floating all over the universe. This has led to the development of a common end of the world theory. It is believed that if the Earth is hit by an asteroid that is big enough, it could cause some catastrophic world-ending events. And we were so close to it in 1989 when a huge asteroid passed the exact place we had orbited 6 hours earlier. Scary stuff!

Disease Outbreak
Regardless of how prepared the world is, we can never be prepared enough for a worldwide epidemic. This is why there was imminent panic at the outbreak of the deadly Ebola disease a few years back. And back in the middle ages, a disease called “the Black Death’ wiped out more that a quarter of the world’s population. The global spread of an epidemic is nothing to look forward to as it’s one of the ways the world could end.

Ecosystem Collapse
Our ecosystem is designed in a way that every organism is needed for the continual normal running of the world. So there is a belief that if the ecosystem is disrupted too much by man’s actions, there is going to be some dire consequences. And as it is, we are disrupting the delicate balance of the ecosystem more and more every day. It could really lead to the end of days.

A.I Revolution
Artificial Intelligence (A.I) is the order of the day in the world we live in right now. Every day, we see people develop A.I robots, phones or systems that are smarter than they used to be. Scientists have even created robots that can start and keep up conversations with normal people, and robots that can change facial expressions too.Although I know they’d have ways to control these A.I and robots, but what if that control button fails one day? And the robots decide to take over.

Global War
Thankfully, the world has seen and survived two different world wars. But with the level of sophistication of weapons nowadays, and the massive nuclear bombs and energy being produced in developed countries, who is sure that the world can survive another war breakout? Most scientists do not think so, and I agree with them.

Alien Invasion
We humans have been fantasizing about the possibility of life on other planets for a very long time now. There are even research facilities that get millions of dollars in funding to explore the possibility. But as exciting as it may sound, there may actually be alien life out there. And what happens if these aliens decide to invade our planet? As ridiculous as it may sound, it can happen, and scientist are not ignoring the fact. Regardless of how many movies are made on how humans defeat alien invasions, it is still considered one of the ways the world could end.

Global Warming
I know by now, you will agree with me that global warming is a thing to worry about. And actually, it goes way beyond this stifling heat Nigeria is currently experiencing. The worldwide effects of global warming is getting more and more pronounced in our environmental conditions and it is believed that without check, global warming could be the number one cause of the end of the world. And soon too.

Romance / The Anxious Bride: How To Deal With The Attention On Your Big Day by reterdeen: 11:07am On Apr 14, 2019
Suffering from social anxiety is no joke – the less attention on you, the better.

But what happens when you get married, and you have to walk down the aisle and be the center of everyone’s attention? If brides who enjoy the spotlight still feel a little nervous when they walk down the aisle, imagine how nerve-wracking it can get for someone with social anxiety disorder.

So here are some tips on how you can survive your big day long enough to exchange wedding rings with your groom:

Rehearsal

Wedding rehearsals are not only there to let the wedding party know where their places are and what they should be doing in the ceremony, but it also gives you the feel of what it would be like on the big day. Take note of the things that make you uncomfortable and try to talk to your wedding planner or your wedding officiant if there are some changes that can be done to make you more comfortable.

Skip the procession

You do not have to walk down the aisle all by yourself. You can ask your father and mother to take you from the first step to the altar or walk down the aisle with your bridesmaids together hand in hand. To have the people closest to you by your side will motivate you to go through the walk despite the butterflies in your stomach. If you have a small wedding, you can ditch the formalities and just take your place upfront.

Focus on the groom

One thing that helps is to focus on your groom’s face as you walk simply. This will help you avoid eye contact with other people and will blur out the crowd. After all, this is your day together, and your guests will understand if you choose to focus on the groom alone.

Ditch traditions

Wedding traditions that make the bride the center of attention such as the first dance and the throwing of bouquet can seriously trigger an anxiety attack. You can ditch these traditions if you want to. Instead of the first dance with just you and your husband, why not turn it into a group number and have the rest of the wedding party dance with you? And instead of throwing the bouquet, you can always play games where the winners get the bouquet.

Master breathing exercises

Breathing exercises are great coping strategies for anxiety. Take the time to practice deep breathing as your big day nears; this will help encourage relaxation.

Your wedding is a special day, and you should not let your anxiety get in the way. Make everything special for your loved ones and enjoy the day. To make your wedding a big day, do preparation, and choose your favorite outfits and jewelry style.

Being in the spotlight will be unavoidable, but you can also choose to have a small private ceremony with just you and your husband and a few witnesses then come home to have a simple party with all your family and friends. The people close to you will understand. But for those who cannot have this option, practice these tips to help you get through your big day.

Jobs/Vacancies / 5 Most Dangerous Jobs In Nigeria by reterdeen: 8:10am On Apr 14, 2019
The lack of sufficient social and infrastructural amenities in Nigeria today and a very poor GDP Per Ca-pita is a problem. It has made the indigenous people take up jobs and career paths that, would have normally looked alright in developed countries, are dangerous because of the social-economic structure.

Here are 5 most dangerous jobs in Nigeria:

Electrician
It should not come as a surprise that this is on our list. If you really think about it critically, you will understand my perspective. Being an electrician in Nigeria is not an easy task, especially for those who work for the Power Holding Company. They have to carry their own equipment in the sun, going to very hostile places and neighborhoods to handle technical issues that could range from connecting a line to disconnecting them. The people in these regions sometimes attack these men without warning and there has been reports of people getting maimed and killed while carrying out their duties. This hostility is caused because of the failed power companies in supplying power and yet charge exaggerated bills, which have aggravated the people to committing these heinous acts.

Construction Worker
When you think about construction workers, you mind goes to a set of highly skilled individuals, wearing protective gear and carrying out their activities in an organized manner. Well, in Nigeria, this picture is rarely seen as construction workers hardly wear any of those protective gears, exposing themselves to serious work hazards. Most times, instead of supporting beams, they use bamboo sticks and to top it off, they usually never have any health insurance or cover.

Armed Forces
Do I need say more? In Nigeria, there are news of terrorist in the north, militants in the south and crime rate increases daily. Being in an armed force (Air Force, Navy and Army) comes with its many risks in Nigeria, you are exposed to death every other day.
The payroll is terrible and it comes with no health or life insurance. And even if you die as a solider, your family is not properly compensated.

Driving Fuel Tanks
We’ve heard of fuel tanks exploding on major roads and oil spillage related accidents now and then. Not only is the job of the driver dangerous to himself, he puts the lives of those around him and the vehicle in danger to. All it usually takes is one bad turn to cause a life-threatening situation. Worse still is the fact that the roads they ply most times are badly constructed and filled with pot holes.

Telecommunications Engineers
Have you ever taken your time to wonder how the really tall telecommunication mast get there, or who puts them there? Well, somebody has to do it right? And when it has a fault, its still someone that will go and fix it. Climbing some masts that are over 50 ft tall is really dangerous and isn’t a job for the faint of heart.

Crime / Top 5 Most Outrageous Robberies In History by reterdeen: 7:52am On Apr 14, 2019
Everyone wants to get money. And there are various different ways to do so. You could decide to work for it, start a business, gamble, play the lottery or if you are lucky, you are simply born into wealth. However, since time immemorial, people have done some outrageous things to get wealthy, including robbery. While some people – thieves have had humorously failed attempts at stealing cash, a few others have pulled of what can only be described as shocking and somewhat outrageous robberies. Here is a list of the top 5 most outrageous robberies carried out in history.

The Isabella Gardner Museum Robbery
Art has always been valuable. This is one fact the robbers of the above named museum were well aware of. On March 18, 1990, two men disguised as policemen walked into the museum in Boston and tricked the security guards on duty into leaving their posts. The thieves then tied the guards up and made away with several valuable artworks. The value of the stolen art pieces is put at £500 million today, and to cap it all, the thieves and their loot are still at large. There is a $10 million reward for any credible information on these robbers.

The Banco Central Burglary
This robbery was so huge that it made it into the Guinness World Record as the biggest bank robbery ever. It happened in 2005 when a group of robbers made away with about $71.6 million worth of bank notes from the Banco Central bank in Brazil. They got into the bank by digging a tunnel from a building about 78 meters away from the bank directly into the bank’s vault. Although the prime suspect in the robbery turned up dead about 2 months later, only about $4 million of the stolen loot was recovered.

The Securitas Depot Robbery
Our next stop is the biggest cash robbery in the history of Britain. In February 2006, the manager of a Securitas depot was pulled over by what he thought was a police vehicle. It turned out to be robbers who kidnapped him and took him to join his already kidnapped family. The whole group then went back to the depot and the robbers made off with about $57 million in cash. However, 5 men in the 6-man gang were caught and given life sentences, while the 6th man is still at large till today. And he is with the money too, allegedly.

The Great Brink’s Robbery
Another Boston Robbery makes this list. This particular robbery was referred to as the “crime of the century” back then. The robbers had spent two years studying and practicing for the crime and on the 17th of January, 1950, it happened. They walked into the Brink building, tied up the bank’s staff and walked out with $1.2 million in cash and $1.6 million in checks. Although it took six years, the FBI finally apprehended them with 8 members of the original gang getting slammed with life sentences.

The Antwerp Diamond Heist
This is the biggest jewelry robbery ever. A man called Leonardo Notarbartolo led a group of robbers to steal about $100 million worth of diamonds from the Antwerp World Diamond Center. Notarbartolo had planned the crime very carefully. He rented an office in the diamond center for over 2 years just to make sure he is trusted and has unrestricted access to the building. And the crime was committed perfectly too. However, Notarbartolo made one mistake; he left his half-eaten sandwich at the crime scene, giving police enough DNA evidence to nab him. He was then arrested and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

These crimes have their places in the history books as some of the most outrageous robberies that have gone down in history. Have you heard of any bigger ones? Do share with us in the comment section.

Food / 7 Foods We Eat Everyday That Can Kill Us by reterdeen: 4:00pm On Apr 03, 2019
One of the major goals in life is to stay healthy. After all we can’t enjoy all the money and good things of life if you are down on the sick bed. As a result, many people try to live healthy by eating healthy food. However, some of the foods we consume everyday are capable of being detrimental to our health. I have compiled a list of 7 foods we consume everyday that can lead to death. Take a look:

Rice

Rice is the number one staple food in Nigeria. We always have a reason to eat rice. Christmas rice, wedding rice, birthday rice, Sunday rice, Ileya rice and even burial rice. Everyone eats rice in Nigeria. However, rice has been found to contain trace amounts of the poisonous arsenic. So consuming it in large quantities can lead to a build-up of the arsenic to fatal levels. Don’t be alarmed though as you’d need to eat at least 7 million plates at once for this to happen.

Tomato

Well, tomato stems and leaves sha. These parts of the tomato plant contain alkali poisons that can cause stomach problems and in severe conditions, death. Even the unripe tomatoes have the same effect. So try not to eat tomato leaves eh?

Apples

Apples have poison in them. The poison however is in the apple seeds. Apple seeds contain cyanide amygdalin which is detrimental to us humans. But then, you’d have to consume over 100 seeds of the fruit to end up in the hospital – morgue.

Raw meat and eggs

Another thing we love in this country is meat. There is also meat for all occasions in Nigeria. But be aware that meat in its raw or semi-cooked state contains a bacteria called salmonella. This salmonella can lead to gastroenteritis which is a life-threatening condition in humans. So try to avoid consuming raw or improperly cooked meat and eggs.

Cassava

Cassava is our other most popular staple food. It is mostly consumed in its processed form – garri, akpu/fufu, eba, etc. the problem with cassava though is that it contains a poisonous chemical called hydrogen cyanide. If not properly processed, the hydrogen cyanide can make it into your meal and lead to paralysis and even death. Luckily, this chemical can be easily removed by boiling the cassava or giving it proper processing. But you should not forget to be careful when you buy your garri.

Honey

Honey is a delicious natural sweetner. Consuming pure honey can be a blissful experience and a healthy one too. However, unpasteurized honey contains what is called grayanotoxin. This grayanotoxin is quite bad for us humans. When consumed, it can cause weakness, dizziness, nausea and vomiting for as long as 24 hours. All these symptoms can be gotten from just a teaspoon of grayanotoxin filled honey. Now imagine what 3 teaspoons will cause.

Water

Yes, last but not the least on my list is the almighty water! As Fela rightly said, “water no get enemy”. Water is simply the universal solvent of life. However, as good and refreshing as water is, too much of it can kill. Taking too much water can lead to a condition known as hyper-hydration or better still, water poisoning. Water can actually poison you when it’s too much in your system. Hyper-hydration leads to an imbalance in the brain’s electrolytes which can lead to lethal consequences.

So there are the top 7 everyday foods we consume that can kill us. Nevertheless, most of the killing properties of these foods come as a result of over indulgence or poor processing. So make sure you do not eat too much and always process your food well too. Stay healthy!

Family / 10 Strange Baby Features: A Suprise For Every New Mum by reterdeen: 12:33pm On Feb 18, 2019
Newborns come with certain features that can take mothers (especially first-time mums) by surprise. Just before you hit the road to see the doctor check out these weird but normal things, your new bundle of joy would bring.

Cradle Cap:

Have you seen those whitish flakes come off your baby’s scalp? They are called cradle cap. This is normal for every newborn and would go off after a few months. All you need do is to rub your baby’s scalp with baby oil regularly and scrape with a comb the cradle cap with gradually come off. Your baby would need to see a pediatrician if the cradle cap spreads to other parts of the body instead of reducing.

Flying Poop:

Baby poop starts with the meconium-black sticky and odorless poop to a seedy texture poop with colours ranging from yellow to brown or green. In the course of your babies poop episodes, you may experience flying poop from your babies diaper. When the poops fly from the bums to your wall, that sounds gross, right? Welcome to motherhood! If your baby poop has blood stains you need to seek help.

Baby Large Breast and Genitals:

Your hormones play many roles throughout pregnancy. These hormones affect your baby too. Your baby may be born with swollen breast and genitals do not be alarmed, it will go down and return to normal with time. However, if your baby’s breast is reddish with an increase in temperature, you will need to see a doctor.

Baby Makes Grunting Sounds:

Perhaps you expected that your babies would make such beautiful sounds when she is born sorry to shock you! Get ready to hear some grunts especially when she is sleeping. This grunting occurs because your baby’s nostrils are small and some mucus may be stuck in it. You may need to use a nasal aspirator to suck out the mucus to clear the nostrils. As your baby grows these characteristics would go except she comes down with a cold.

Sneezing:

Your newborn would be sensitive to her new environment, which could make her sneeze a lot. This could be caused by foreign particles, the sun, and mucus or amniotic fluid. All these are the adjustment to a new world. If your baby breathes as if there is something obstructing his breathing then they will be the need to seek your doctor’s attention.

Not to worry your baby’s head will take the proper shape after birth. There is no need for any molding ( using the hand to manually shape the head). Switch the positioning of your baby while laying her down so she does not have a flat head.

Sports / Top 5 Most Successful English Teams In The UEFA Champions League by reterdeen: 1:09pm On Feb 16, 2019
The UEFA champions League is Europe’s most elite club competition. All top football clubs in Europe, including their players and supporters, dream of the day they can lift this revered trophy. The English Premier League teams are no exception.

Over the years, we have seen many English teams make winning the UCL their ultimate season target, with only a few actually achieving it.

The first matches in the knockout stages of this year’s UEFA Champions League were played on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. This round of matches was exciting for the English teams as we saw one giant (Manchester United) crumble at home while the less experienced team (in terms of European football) triumphed emphatically.

As we wait to see if Tottemham can build on their Wednesday’s incredible win over Borussia Dortmund and go all the way to the final, let’s look at the top 5 most Successful English teams in the UEFA Champions League.

Liverpool
Liverpool F.C are England’s most successful team in this competition. The Reds have won Europe’s highest rated competition a whooping 5 times (1977, 1978, 1981, 1984 and 2005). Although their most recent win was 14 years ago, Liverpool were England’s most dominant force in the Champions League back in 80s. They have also been runners-up 3 times (1985, 2007 and 2018) with their last final appearance as recent as last year.

Manchester United

England’s most successful team, Manchester United is not far behind with 3 UCL titles to their name. They won their first in 1968 while the second came in 1990. They then defeated rivals, Chelsea in 2008 to claim their third title in this competition. Manchester United have been runners-up twice in 2009 and 2011. They lost both matches to Barcelona.

Nottingham Forest
Current English Championship Side, Nottingham Forest is next on the list. As surprising as this may sound, Nottingham Forest dominated Europe twice when they won back-to-back European Cups (what the UCL was called back then) in 1979 and 1980. Unfortunately, they couldn’t build on those successes and were relegated from England’s top flight football in 1999.

Chelsea
The Blues have also tasted UCL success. Chelsea won the UEFA Champions League in 2012 when they defeated German champions, Bayern Munich in the final. It was their only other UCL final match after they had lost the first one in 2008 to Manchester United.

Aston Villa
Another Championship team makes the list. Aston Villa won the European Cup back in 1982. They have not tasted any other UCL success after that and even got relegated from the EPL in 2016.

Family / Myths And Facts Of Domestic Violence by reterdeen: 12:50pm On Feb 16, 2019
Domestic Violence a case study that must be curbed either from Men or women. Let’s check the myth and fact of Domestic Violence below.

Myth: Victims of violence in the home enjoy the abuse.

Fact: A variety of survival methods are undertaken by victims of domestic violence including reaching out to family and friends and informing the authorities. Sometimes taking the beating in place of children or even remaining silent are strategies that are enacted but this in no way means that the victim likes it.

Myth: Psychological disorders and low self-esteem lead victims to get involved in abusive
relationships.

Fact: Studies of domestic violence victims demonstrate that those abused fail to share common
characteristics other than being female. This dispels a belief in our culture that an emotionally stable
person would not put themselves in a position of continued abuse. Of course people already inflicted
with low self-esteem or psychological illnesses are not immune to domestic violence and the violence itself can lead to these types of problems, but there is no proof of them being a causing factor.

Myth: Victims of domestic violence will always be in abusive relationships.

Fact: It may take some time to completely separate victims from abusers because of the control abusers gain over their partner. This control could be financial, physical, or expressed through threats to the children, but most victims do find a way to break these relationships. A strong support system from friends and family is a motivating factor to ending abusive relationships, as well as law enforcement, counselors, and legal support. Protection and financial security can be achieved through legal assistance and there is no evidence that victims tend to seek out other abusive relationships.

Myth: Domestic abusers hurt their partners because of alcohol and drugs.

Fact: Though alcohol and drugs may increase the frequency and severity of violence in the home,
domestic violence cannot be solved through substance abuse programs alone. Other programs such as batterer intervention may work in conjunction to get to the root of the problem.

Myth: Protective orders or arresting abusers are useless methods to ending domestic violence.

Fact: Though research on the efficacy of arrests and civil orders has produced conflicting results, most experts agree that their effectiveness is based on continued enforcement across the criminal justice and civil justice system. It is important for abusers to know that this will not be tolerated therefore officers must make arrests, prosecutors must prosecute, and courts must enforce orders or impose sanctions for any individual effort to work within the system.

Myth: When one parent abuses another, the children are not affected.

Fact: Children suffer behavioral, cognitive, emotional and developmental impairments when witnessing the abuse by one parent to another. Studies also show that between 50% and 75% of children are abused in conjunction with one of the parents. Children, especially boys, tend to reenact this violence on their own partners as adults.

Myth: Domestic violence has no effect on a parent’s ability to be a parent.

Fact: For many reasons, a parent’s ability to raise a child is hampered when that parent is abusive.
Children suffer emotional as well as the physical abuse listed above and abusers use the children for leverage against the other parent which results in the child not being the primary concern. In most states, courts now recognize that the perpetrator should not be given custody. Gone are the days when the emotional instability of the abused parent affected their ability to successfully gain custody.

Romance / 7 Surprising Reasons Couples Constantly Break Up And Get Back Together by reterdeen: 12:06pm On Feb 16, 2019
Experts call it ‘Relationship Cycling.’ It is all about breaking up and making up again and again. Your friends and family ask you to stop but you can’t control it.

What causes you to get back together with your partner after breaking up? Below are 7 surprising reasons couples constantly break up and get back together.

The inability to recover from the breakup

The relationship didn’t work and you had to break up with your partner. However, you can’t seem to get over not being with your partner. You can’t recover from the pain of losing your significant other because it is unbearable.

In this case, the desire to make up with your partner is fueled by your helplessness in tolerating the pain of the breakup.

Believing in second chances

Your partner messed up or you did. And you had to break up. But later, you start to feel hope in your relationship and you believe that things can change.

You believe that a second chance should be given to your relationship to make it work again.

No better option

You believe that you cannot find a better replacement and so, you’re ready to get back with your partner. You might even leave the relationship because you were looking for a better option and when you didn’t, you decided to make up with your partner.

Low conflict resolution skills

You both lack the skill to resolve conflict so for any little argument and disagreement, you break up. Then you miss each other and make up again. You fight again and then break up. Then you miss each other again and make up.

You simply need to learn how to settle things and resolve disagreements amicably.

You want to see what’s out there

This usually happens between couples that have been in a long-term relationship. Boredom occurs and you both decide to run away.

You think it is fun to see what is out there so you break up. Then you realize that boredom is prevalent in all relationships and decide to make up again.

You’ve already invested so much

“How do I start all over with someone new?” “How do I get to know them while they get to know me?” “No way!”

You might not want to let go of someone you’ve invested so much time and effort in and because of this, you’ll try your best to fix the relationship.

Love

It might not be all of the things listed above. It might just be love. Having genuine reasons to overlook all flaws and try again.

Love is the only thing that will make you go back despite everything. Yes, love wins always!

Politics / If Nigerian Politicians Were Game of Thrones Characters by reterdeen: 11:43am On Feb 16, 2019
Politics is the central theme of the popular TV drama GoT and in view of this, comparing the characters of the soap with Nigerian politicians can’t go wrong most especially since, they are all striving for the throne.

Nigeria is just as diverse as the setting of the game of thrones. In Nigeria, 3 tribes jostle for the central control in aso rock while in GoT, 7 kingdoms vie for central power in kings landing. The only difference between the two settings is that more male figures/characters have dominated the Nigerian scene than females. So don’t be surprised if we can’t find a match for Arya Stark! I know you all waiting for that.
Just so everybody is in agreement here, there is no philosophy or science that went into how I picked these characters and their representatives. That being stated, a considerable lot of these GoT characters might not connect 100 percent with those I represent them with. Remember, it is just for fun!

Jaime Lannister/ Bukola Saraki
The kingslayer is much a perfect match for our senate president, though he is yet to slay a king, he has been the main disturbance of the current president since their entry since 2015. But that is not all the similarities.

Jaime’s character has been a shadow of his very powerful father, Tywin. Exactly like Bukola Saraki whose father (Olushola Saraki) literally owned Kwara state when he was alive.

Lord Petyr Baelish/Bola Tinubu

Lord Baelish known as “littlefinger” is a shrewd schemer, always in the background controlling and influencing the actions of the king, which is a straight pointer to the former Governor of Lagos, Chief Bola Tinubu nicknamed Jagaban.

Tinubu has been without a position since 2007, yet he has pulled strings almost everywhere.

Tywin Lannister/ Wike Nyesom
Tywin Lannister and Wike have a lot in common. They both own their state/kingdom from the background. Wike, who was responsible for installing Rotimi Amaechi as governor of Portharcourt, was also significant in expelling him and whatever legacy he had built.

Today Wike is the major reason PDP is back on the tussle for power.

Cersei Lannister/ Patience Jonathan
I know you all won’t agree here, but before you laugh out loud, let me ask, who has been the most active queen in Nigerian politics? Which other first lady has been figuratively stripped naked in the full view of the common Nigeria? (Compare shamewalk and Chibok saga).

Just like Cersei lannister has been the longest Queen regent in the kingdom, Patience Jonathan was the strongest/toughest first lady in Nigerian politics. Leave or take, it’s a fact.

Theon Greyjoy/Dino Melaye
Oh yes, here is a popular brag and loud-mouth that is currently being castrated by the Nigerian police. Dino Melaye is perfect fit for Theon.

Both are starting out as egostic and proud show-off but as the story unfolds, they are being humbled.

Grand Maester Pycelle/ Lai Mohammed
Apart from the fact that they share some facial resemblance, we all know that both of them would create/say just anything to satisfy their master.

Their loyalties have made them villains but they don’t really bother much about it.

Ned Stark/Umar Yar’ adua

We know these two characters for early and tragic deaths but that’s not all.

A lot depended on both of them to save their world.

Jon Snow/ Yemi Osinbajo
You don’t have to agree with me here but let’s be honest; they have been through near-death scenarios and have travelled up and down their worlds trying to unite everyone.

Jon snow started out as being ignored just like our vice president.

Melisandre/Oby Ezekwesili/
Truth is, you do not know whether to hate or love them both for their actions.

Just like Melisandre, Oby has found herself in the centre of several controversies and her actions have come with tons of mixed feelings from the Nigerian Populace.

That’s all the comparison we have, agree with it? You can add yours to the list.
