*We’ re ready to die in service of Edo People, says Obaseki* *_…CAN declares support for gov’s second term bid_* The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has said he is ready to pay the ultimate price in the service of the people of the state, stressing that as long as the mandate of the governor, which he carries was divinely given by God for the service of the people, Edo State is therefore worth dying for. The governor said this at an Interdenominational Church Service organised by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), as part of activities, to celebrate Alaghodaro (Progress) 2019, which marks the governor’s third year in office. Obaseki noted, “I have no doubt that as long as his mercies endureth with us, we are committed to use every drop of our blood to work for the people of Edo State. “People say is Edo worth dying for, I say yes, Edo is worth dying for. And if we have to die for the service of Edo State, so be it. But I am sure God will not let it happen that way.” He expressed appreciation to members of the All Progressive Congress (APC) for their support through his three years in office, adding, “Even though we had minor disagreements at the initial stage, my party members understood the focus of my administration and supported me and in three years, we have made great success.” The governor commended the APC leaders from the 18 Local Government Areas (LGAs) for supporting his second term bid, noting, “They have thrown their weight behind me and urged me to continue the good works in the state, assuring me of their commitment and support.” He attributed the success recorded by his administration in the past three years to God, adding that the strides recorded is clear for all to see, as it is evident in the developments across the state. Governor Obaseki said, “My first challenge as a governor was to correct the image of Edo State in terms of human trafficking. Our women had lost their pride and respect globally. Nobody wanted to talk about it. We didn't live in denial but agreed to tackle the scourge and fought it headlong. Today, we have a good story to tell. “As a government, we showed our commitment to God and the people and it made Edo people trust our administration. Truth is not difficult, yet speaking the truth sometimes can be difficult. We have stood by the truth and defiled most theories of our politics. We have shown that you can speak the truth and still play politics.” Obaseki commended the first civilian governor of Edo State, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun for speaking truth to power and not supporting injustice. He expressed appreciation to the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II for the fatherly role he played in helping his administration achieve many feats in the state. The governor also thanked the legislative and judiciary arms of government for their support in restoring the orderliness needed for development of the state. In his sermon titled “Give Thanks unto the Lord,” the Chairman, CAN, Edo State Chapter, Rev. Oriname Oyonnude Kure, who took his bible reading from Psalms 136:1, described Governor Obaseki as the David sent to transform Edo state. He said God has divinely appointed and anointed the governor for the destiny of Edo State, noting that CAN will continue to collaborate and support the governor, as he begins his campaign for second term. “You have done well in the state in the last three years as your developmental strides in the area of infrastructural development is applaudable. You have created jobs, empowered the youths, revamped the education sector. The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium is wearing a new look. We urge you to continue to break new grounds,” Rev Kure added. These areas include basic education, housing, healthcare, child right laws, reducing the incidence of human trafficking and irregular migration. The governor disclosed this while addressing journalists after the monthly state security meeting held at Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital. We are impressed and will ensure that he returns to consolidate his developmental slides. We also commend the APC leaders on this noble decision, we are strongly behind them in ensuring Edo State moves forward.” Leader of Market Women in Edo, Madam Blacky Ogiamen explained that, the governor has done a lot across the state to earn their support, adding, “The achievements of Obaseki in three years across the state surpassed achievements of other leaders in the past.” “Governor Obaseki, from his policies, programmes and projects, is clearly set out to serve the people with the available resources rather than committing such resources to service the personal interests of few politicians. That is why these few are fighting him against the will of the majority of the people. We commend the APC leaders for this endorsement and as their wives, we will continue to support them because the voice of the people is the voice of God.” “In the area of economic growth, production, technical and basic education, the governor has delivered on his campaign promises. The Obaseki- led Edo State Government is also building roads and a seaport to open more market opportunities for our people.” She added, “This administration has done a lot in three years. He has shown enough political determination and administrative competence as well as endearing capacity to serve the people. We will continue to support him in his transformational policies and programmes.” |

https://tribuneonlineng.com/alaghodaro-2019-assessing-obasekis-model-for-a-total-society/ *Alaghodaro 2019: Assessing Obaseki’s Model For A Total Society* *By Kehinde Oyetimi* In the annals of development, only few can boast of engendering drastic change in the life of their people in a short time, reversing decades-old prejudices and obstacles that impinge on the people’s dignity and collective prosperity. Gradually, through what could be described as a systematic, frugal allocation of scarce resources, Edo State is joining the league of sub-national entities that are rewriting their story through pragmatic policy reforms, programmes and initiatives. The Alaghodaro Summit series are annual events held to showcase these gradual, steady steps, unveiling the numerous reforms and initiatives that have created opportunities for prosperity– driven by the Edo people and the state’s burgeoning investors – and opened up the space to interrogate and challenge conventions that impede progress, with a view to correcting them. On mounting the saddle as Edo State governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, espoused plans for resetting the state’s economic base, as well as restoring the dignity of Edo people, anchored on six thematic pillars for development, which touch on all indices of human development. Alaghodaro 2019 is the third edition of the Alaghodaro summit series organised by the state government in partnership with the state’s private sector. It is being held to mark the governor’s third year anniversary in office. It showcases reforms, policies and programmes implemented by the Obaseki-led administration in the state, which are opening up space for private investment, inclusive economic growth and improvement of the people’s livelihood. *Edo’s changing healthcare landscape* Governor Obaseki on October 31 launched the Edo State Social Health Insurance/Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF), as well as revamped Primary Healthcare Centers under the Edo- Primary Health Improvement Programme. The state had made an initial contribution of N100m to access the BHCPF, opening up opportunities to energise its health insurance programme. All of this tie up to an organic plan to retool the primary healthcare system to be able to meet the needs of ordinary Edo people. Speaking at the launch of the scheme, Governor Obaseki said the focus of his administration is to improve the lives of the people through good education and provision of basic healthcare services accessible to all Edo people and residents The governor noted that the focus of his administration is to establish 230 PHCs across state as the centres to serve as referral centers, noting, “You will not be attended to in General Hospitals without referral from your PHCs.” The Minister of Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire said that the BHCPF would commit N573m to enable Edo people to benefit from essential services after the details are worked out and the healthcare system begins to function. *Edo-BEST: revamping basic education for results* On education, the government has revamped the basic education sector by training and equipping 11,300 teachers with tech-based tools and skills to deliver technology-driven education to not less than 300,000 pupils across 918 schools in the state. Governor Obaseki was awarded the Best Performing Governor in 2019 for the impact of the Edo-BEST programme as well as his prioritisation of teachers’ welfare in the state, which has led to improved outcome in primary schools across the state. The programme is designed to develop a highly-skilled teaching workforce by training, supporting and motivating them to succeed in the classroom. Checks showed that in public schools across the state where teachers now teach with tablets and other digital teaching aids, parents and guardians are hurriedly registering their children to benefit from the new teaching methods. It was learnt that the parents are pulling their children from private schools to the public schools, which have been revamped under the Edo-BEST programme. Mr. Enagbare, a parent who withdrew three of his children from a private school to be registered at Oba Akenzua Primary School in Oredo Local Government, said he was impressed with the transformation of the schools in the state. *Job creation: EdoJobs multifaceted jobs drive* Committed to ensuring that the state is reset from its status as a civil service state to one that is driven by productivity on the back of its teeming, education youth population, the state government established the Edo State Skills Development Agency (EdoJobs), to actualise the governor’s promise of creating 200,000 jobs in his first term in office. Not less than 150,000 jobs have already been created, including training programmes in technical and vocational skills, technology innovation and business acceleration, among others. The Edo Production Centre, a novel initiative to drive is being built-in partnership with the Market Development for the Niger Delta (MADE) II programme, Benson Idahosa University (BIU) and the Des Moines Area Community College in Iowa, the United States of America. It would be a multipurpose, one-stop-shop for small businesses. share support infrastructure such as 24 hours electricity, security and low-cost financing to help boost economic growth in the state. Another major contributor to the state’s burgeoning tech scene, which now incubates young innovators is the Edo Innovation Hub. The Hub, which also houses the South South Innovation Hub, is a cluster for innovators and inventors in Benin City, and is priming youth to evolve and strengthen the technology ecosystem in the state. Head, EdoJobs, Mrs. Ukinebo Dare, said the state government has done a lot in energizing the economy by engaging youths and providing opportunities to garner skills or to improve their chances for employability. One of the innovative projects to drive industrialisation by the Obaseki-led administration is the Edo Production hub. The facility provides Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and artisans with 24-hour electricity, business support, market development and industry linkage opportunities. It currently serves as a mini-replica of the big businesses and diverse industries expected at the Benin Enterprise and Industrial Park. The facility allows small businesses to share support infrastructure like security and low-cost financing to help boost economic growth in the state. The center, located in the Sapele Road axis of Benin City, is fitted with factory space, security and office space and live-in desks for relevant government agencies to engage, support and provide services to small businesses. The agencies to be hosted at the facility are the Bank of Industry (BoI), Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Edo Internal Revenue Service (EIRS), among others. It is fitted with 500KV transformers, which are connected to the 33KV line in the area. It has 1.2MW of power at the onset, which would eventually be expanded to 4MW, to power heavy machines to be run at the facility. *2019 Alaghodaro: Delivering progress to the people* The Local Organising Committee for the 2019 Alaghodaro Summit recently released the programme of activities to mark the third-year anniversary of the Alaghodaro Summit, adding that the business summit will evaluate the administration’s achievements and propose ways to deepen their impact on Edo people and residents. Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said the five-day event will commence with the women’s summit/Jumat service on Friday, 8th November, 2019. According to him, the women summit will be followed by a golf tournament on Saturday, November 9, while a special thanksgiving service will take place on Sunday, 10 November, 2019. He is emphasising technical education for our people and primary healthcare.” |
*Edo 2020: APC leaders across 18 LGAs adopt Obaseki as party’s flagbearer* *_…as gov presents scorecard_* Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the 18 Local Government Areas of Edo State, have unanimously adopted Governor Godwin Obaseki, as the party’s flagbearer for the 2020 gubernatorial election in the state. The leaders adopted the governor during an enlarged meeting with the governor at Government House in Benin City, the Edo State capital. A chieftain of the APC from Edo South Senatorial District, Rev. Michael Agharevba, moved the motion for the endorsement and adoption of the governor for a second term, commending Governor Obaseki on his achievements as governor in the past three years. Noting that the governor has transformed all sectors of the state within a short time, he said, “We are solidly behind the governor and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Comrade Philip Shaibu for a second term. This is the first time somebody is speaking to our hearts and it is evident in the physical structures he is building across the state.” Former Chief Whip in the Edo State House of Assembly and a leader of the APC in Edo North, Hon Shaibu Abdullahi, seconded the motion for the adoption of Governor Obaseki as the APC flagbearer in the elections next year. A former council chairman and chieftain of the APC in Edo Central, Mrs. Stella Okoro, said the women of the state have unanimously agreed to adopt the governor and support his bid for a second term, noting, “When a woman carries you on her back, you are protected. We are happy for all the governor is doing. We are carrying him on our back as a sign of our support for his administration.” Earlier, Edo State Chairman of the APC, Barr Anselm Ojezua, echoed the party leaders’ support for Governor Obaseki’s second term bid. He said the APC in Edo State has been active and remains strong as ever before, noting, “We will take those steps that will protect the integrity of the APC. Once we are done sanitising our party system, we will be better and stronger.” He explained the APC prohibits the formation of parallel movements within the party structure, noting that the Edo Peoples Movement (EPM) cannot be an organ of the party. In a vote of thanks, APC Chieftain, Charles Idahosa, urged the party leaders to intensify work at the ward level to defeat the common enemy against the Governor Obaseki-led government. He noted, “We have a problem and we need to go back to our respective wards to put things in order. There is a big fight, and it is a win for us. We know our enemy and we must defeat him.” The governor presented the scorecard of his administration in the past three years to the party leaders, hailing them for their sacrifice and faith in his administration, with a promise to do more in delivering the dividends of democracy to Edo people. He said his administration has engendered good governance through policies and programmes targeted at eradicating poverty and creating jobs in the last three years, assuring to consolidate on his achievements in the next one year. “When we came onboard three years ago, 15 out of 18 LGAs were not able to pay salaries and we met huge pension arrears burden, but with your support, we have made a lot of progress. “For revenue generation, the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) in Oredo LGA rose from N1.5 million monthly in December 2016 to N62 million in October, 2019. We are emphasising people-oriented projects because the APC’s principle is focused on people's development.” He said his administration has created about 107,000 direct and indirect jobs in the last three years, noting, “We have been getting a lot of support from diaspora in this regard.” He urged citizens to expect more developments in the next year especially in the area of agriculture, infrastructure, job creation and social welfare. The governor reiterated that members of the APC working against the interest of the party would be driven out, adding, “Nobody must feel that they are bigger than the party.” Follow Governor Obaseki on Social Media Website: www.godwinobaseki.com Facebook: fb.com/godwinobasekiofficial Twitter: @governorobaseki Instagram: @governorobaseki YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCsPsv0iqJ0rBo_9qRYCoCag/ *PHOTO CAPTION:* *S4_01:* Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki (2nd right); his Deputy, Rt. *The Unwarranted Attack On Gov Obaseki, Oba Of Lagos, Others* https://leadership.ng/2019/11/05/the-unwarranted-attack-on-gov-obaseki-oba-of-lagos-others The governor of a state is not an ordinary citizen. He is not just a citizen, he is a custodian of the mandate of the entire people of a state. He is the head of the executive arm of government of the state. The office of the governor is therefore beyond the person occupying it. It is an institution. Like the Governor, the Speaker of the State House of Assembly and the Chief Judge of the state are heads of the legislature and judiciary respectively. Any attack on the persons occupying these institutions or arms of government is an attack on the people who elected them to occupy these positions. That was why I find it unacceptable, I find it lamentable, I find it atrocious that hoodlums attacked the convoy of Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki and the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu at Iyamoh, the country home of the APC national chairman, Adams Oshiomhole. Oba Rilwan Akiolu, Governor Obaseki and Pro – Chancellor of Edo University, Iyahmo, Prof. T. O. K. Audu, were in a convoy on their way to Oshiomhole’ s house when the hoodlums attacked their convoy. The governor and the other guests had attended the maiden convocation of the Edo University, Iyahmo, Etsako West local government area of Edo State. According to reports, it took the intervention of the governor’s security aides to prevent a blood bath as several vehicles were smashed by the thugs. What the hoodlums did was despicable, condemnable and unacceptable and must be condemned by every right thinking Nigerian. Governor Obaseki was right to describe the attack as shameful. Addressing journalists after the attacks, the governor took exception to the resort to violence, noting that it was both shameful and unfortunate for such an attack to take place at the residence of the national chairman of the ruling party in the state and at the national level. “It is very unfortunate that we can’ t feel safe in the house of our national chairman. I am not sure that if I visit the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) they will attack me the way they did in the house of the APC national chairman. “It is unfortunate that things have degenerated to this extent. But we will continue to sue for peace. We cannot afford to lose the gains of the last three years. We will continue to pursue peace,” he was quoted as saying. Who knows what would have happened if the attackers was able to harm a sitting governor. We may never know but what we know for sure is that it would have escalated the political tension in Edo State All Progressives Congress(APC) and the state in general. This column has also noted that the attack has been condemned generally by well meaning Nigerians. The Lagos State government; the Pan Yoruba socio – cultural group, Afenifere; and Pan Niger Delta Forum(PANDEF) have reportedly condemned the attack on Governor Obaseki and others. The Special Adviser on Chieftaincy Affairs to Governor Babajide Sanwo – Olu of Lagos State, Prince Bayo Osiyemi, described the attack on Oba of Lagos as sacrilegious. “The attack on any monarch is a sacrilege for which the perpetrators must seek divine forgiveness, ” he said, adding: “The attack on the premier Oba in Lagos State somewhere in Edo State is uncalled for and whoever sponsored the attackers must do a quick rethink and desist from such untoward behaviour.” Also condemning the incident, spokesman of Afenifere, Yinka Odumakin, stated emphatically that “it is a sacrilege that political thugs working for area fathers in politics would extend their gangsterism to the Oba of Lagos.” Imagine that the governor and the Oba of Lagos were harmed in the attack and there was reprisal attacks in Benin and Lagos, only God knows what would have happened. Our political leaders should thread carefully when they have disagreements within and without their parties. They should weigh carefully the implications of their actions. Politics is not a zero sum game. It is a game of give and take. It is a game of disagreements, agreements and agreeing to disagree. There is therefore absolutely no reason to resort to violence over political disagreements. The hoodlums who attacked the governor and others were alleged to be supporters of the former governor of Edo State and national chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole. The former governor has quickly denied this, insisting rather that the Edo State deputy governor, Mr. Phillip Shaibu, was behind the attack on the governor, Akiolu, and others. Security agents can determine whatever may be the truth on the incident. We expect the police and other security agents to unearth those behind the attack on the governor and ensure that they are brought to justice. Some political pundits are however, saying that the recent violence in Edo State is traced to the supremacy battle between the national chairman of APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, and his political godson, the Edo State Governor Godwin Obaseki. It is also widely believed that the battle is over the party’ s ticket for the 2020 governorship election in the state. This struggle is therefore between the APC leader in Edo State, Governor Obaseki and national chairman of APC, Adams Oshiomhole, thus APC national secretariat, Abuja may not be able to resolve this issue. It therefore behooves on the leader of APC in Nigeria, President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene in the matter and ensure that peace returns in Edo APC and the state in general. While Nigerians wait for the Presidency to restore peace in Edo State, we however expect APC leaders and opposition parties’ leaders to commit to politics without bitterness and politics without violence. |
