The revolution Nigeria's fashion industry is currently experiencing cannot be stopped by even a pandemic that has kept us at home for longer than we want. Within a decade, the industry has grown exponentially, attracting global attention. Going by GDP data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the “textile, apparel, and footwear” sector has averaged growth of 17% since 2010, influenced by an increase in demand, and extraordinary ideas that continue to push Nigeria into the global fashion consciousness. .... Let us introduce you to them: Sagoe, Lisa Folawiyo, Ugo Mozie, Fisayo Longe | 101 Most Influential Nigerian Fashion Brands and Personalities |
Constant strike actions are a disturbing phenomenon Nigerians are all too familiar with and are counter-productive to a nation’s economic growth because it paralyzes economic activities that result in the loss of productive man-hours that could have generated revenue for the nation during the strike period. The outcome of every election determines the fate of the nation or state it directly affects, that is why people weigh their options before choosing their political representatives. After the just-concluded Edo governorship election that was a subject of national debate, the focus might have shifted to Nigeria’s 2023 presidential election – even though the Ondo gubernatorial election is underway. What are the expectations? Read more |
‘Animal farm’, ‘cruise country’, ‘bunch of jokers’, ‘backwards-thinking country’, ‘country whose citizens deserve their leaders’ are just a few names you will hear Nigerians and the rest of the world call Nigeria. Oh! The country is called Nigeria? We almost forgot. Why won’t we? When we celebrate boreholes that work for one month, roads that have potholes one month after it was inaugurated, power for ‘about 15 hours or so’ (imagine a proud Nigerian at this point), schools that will perform better as empty cinema halls, add the rest. Nigerians are the kind of human species who assume they have every right to ask you to jump into a river because drylands are no longer mentally favourable. It is usually a combination of religious, cultural factors, with sprinkles of prejudices formed over time from interactions with other Nigerian human species. At other times, you think it is the ‘entitlement factor’ at play. Confucius might just be the best teacher in case you get into a dilemma. Read more |
The debate on when the world will be coming to an end has always been a topic of discussion for many who believe that it will end. Religion has been one of the peddlers of the idea that there would be a time when everything about life as we know, would cease. In Christianity’s view, The Rapture is said to be a time where Christians who have served God and believe in Jesus will be taken up to heaven. Read more |
If The Big Brother Naija reality TV show is a social experiment, there will be no greater case study this season than the relationship between Ozo and Nengi. Their story so far has been nothing short of amusing, but lately, amusing has evolved to troubling as Ozo seems unfamiliar with the concept of personal space. Read more |

By 2020 Nigeria will be one of the 20 largest economies in the world, able to consolidate its leadership role in Africa and establish itself as a significant player in the global economic no and political arena… – Sound familiar? A lot of Nigerians have given up on this dream; long before now. With failed systems and a clueless leadership, it will be a joke to think a Vision 2020 can become real. Nigerians have forever distanced themselves from the idea that progress is on the way. Read more |

Global leveller – COVID-19 – has done more in 2020 than any other killer in the world. If we started a debate on how economies have been affected this year alone, we might fill more pages than an encyclopaedia. For a country like Nigeria, the effects are even more devastating; remembering how many feed from hand to mouth and the number of the people who depend on those who feed from hand to mouth. Some businesses were lucky enough to survive the plague, so many others have closed shop. But respite might have come for Nigerians and businesses who mostly look up to God for survival. On the face of it, we all think we can determine how people spend their money. That’s understandable, given that we think we know the difference between good and bad – what is morally, spiritually, culturally correct and what is not. But there’s something we are all missing. We would want to recall how ‘saying no’ to things that don’t align with our goals has become more a movement than just another phrase. How ‘opportunity cost’ is now in our daily conversations. How we own our choices and determine how we should lead our lives. In fact, we say these things to ourselves when we list out our New Year Resolutions and when we want to be reborn. Top of mind: Say no to brunches, say no to intruding in other people’s business, no to borrowing money to friends and families, and no to things that just don’t feel right. We probably forgot. The Federal Government says it is grossly irresponsible to continue borrowing in order to subsidise generation and distribution of electricity in the country; both of which are privately-run. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo who made the assertion on Monday, during the opening of the first-year ministerial performance assessment retreat in Abuja, noted that “because of the problems of the privatisation exercise,” the government has had to keep supporting the largely privatised electricity industry. Religion is either a bane in progressive development or the cause of it; however you want to look at it. And when you realise that Nigerians are highly religious and would do almost anything to validate their faith, your confusion takes a new turn. For the most part, Nigerian Christian faithful grow up to be loyal sons and daughters of their spiritual leader, who, in turn, greatly influences their decisions throughout their loyalty period. But, who won’t follow a man who says he is God’s voice on earth – authoritatively declaring and imploring heights for followers to attain? Well, critical thinkers don’t jump into conclusions. Nigeria is reported to have secured a landmark victory against Process and Industrial Developments (P&ID) in its effort to reverse the $9.6 billion billion judgment awarded against the country. It is 16 days to the Edo governorship election and Nigerians have mixed feelings on how it will turn out, considering the recent spate of violence during off-season elections in Nigeria; Kogi and Bayelsa. The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II yesterday, admonished politicians in the state, particularly the governorship candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Governor Godwin Obaseki, and the All Progressives Congress (APC), Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu, for the pre-election violence and confrontational electioneering utterances already tearing the state apart ahead of the September 19 election. Day 45 in the house and the drama has intensified. In recognition of how far the housemates have come in their Big Brother Naija journey, Big Brother instructed the housemates to pay tribute to the housemates that didn’t make it this far in the game. The idea was to enact a funny portrayal of the evicted housemates, as a fun way to recognise them. This was when the Lucy–Ka3na friendship came to the fore. Read more |

2023 is upon us and a lot of scenarios have started to pan out. Who would have known that former Abia governor and one-time minister of information, Orji Uzor Kalu, would want to be the to assume the now-anthemic role of ‘saviour’. Kalu is seriously warming up, and already visiting political underdogs like Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and Abdulsalami Abubakar. During his visits, The Cable reports that Kalu spoke against zoning in the All Progressives Congress (APC) party, adding that any person in the party can join the presidential race. He went further to say, “I am still in the senate, and I will seek for re-election into the senate but if our people want me to serve as president I will not hesitate.” YNaija |
Whatever appeals to you the most cannot do a better job than music does; arguably. ‘Food for the soul and more’ is how we all ought to portray music. You might have a better description though. And just like food, what you see on your TV screens, what you hear on the radio, on streaming platforms and whichever way you listen and watch music videos passes through a process. The process, the means to a beautiful end, is what YNaija in partnership with Entertainment Consult is recognising this year as it celebrates the ‘undergees’ of the Nigerian music industry. They are the ones who enable lifted spirits; who lighten up our mood, our day. They are not the ones you would ordinarily see on your screen or the voices you hear. They are the ones who make the food turn out well. Read more: YNaija |
At least the world can agree on one thing this time: ‘2020 came with a big blow that has thrown everyone off their feet‘. With the coronavirus disease, COVID-19, ravaging economies and changing work and lifestyles, 2020 is definitely not the kind of year anyone expected. But, while we are recovering from the heavy punch, we will need to understand intentions – this time ASUU. For Nigeria, we have slowly regressed, returned to the ‘old normal’ and are hardly putting measures in place to ensure the coronavirus disease does not keep spreading. Fortunately, worship centres have opened with stiff guidelines, but markets places continue activities like COVID-19 is a myth. Schools resumed with students with little or no information on how to stay safe. What you will see is people without face masks, no sanitisers anywhere, and so on. YNaija |
