Plenty regards to Richmon74 for the supply of 4 260W Solarworld mono panels.

I also got solar mounting rails/brackets from c0ogumo of solardepotng.

After collating the main components from the gurus of this great forum, I decided to try my hands on all I have been reading on the sideline.

The result has been impressive. The batteries reach float charge so quickly that I am beginning to think of increasing the number batteries to store the enormous energy pumped out by the 4 Solarworld panels.

This is my very first attempt at solar energy work.

As a newbie, I decided to post some images to open room for corrections.

Many thanks to all members of this thread.

Congrats. Good job

Yes Solar energy is the way to go now. I have been in solar energy business for some years now. We have done several installations in various parts of Lagos state especially the Lekki, Ajah axis, Ibadan, Ogun, Uyo, Calabar, Eket, PortHarcourt etc. I can comfortably say that this is the way out. I have some clients who have depended 100% on solar power (off grid). We have installed solar system ranging from 500W to our maximum of 20kW for now. I have personally installed a 3kw solar system in my house and have run it for one yr now without any issue. In the one year i have had to start Generator for a total of 3 times when we eventually ran out of power for few reasons; One was when there was a constant overcast for 4 days, second was when there was a higher demand for power in the night than normal and 3rd time was when i mistakenly left my AC in turbo mode all night which draw more current than in regular or eco mode. All the same, Imagine that i have used less than 20litters of fuel for one year meanwhile we leave a very regular life using all our facilities at home including washing machine, drying machine, microwave, fridge and freezer, water dispenser, electric iron etc.

I leave in Uyo. If you are around the area you can call in to see things for yourself. If you are in any of those cities I mentioned and you want to check out any of our installations you can call in so i can refer you to the nearest one.

Weekend regards!

I have never complained about your sharing my images. I don't know where u got them from. I posted those images and Later took it down 'cos When I posted those images the company didn't find it funny. You and I knows how this particular company value the privacy of their warehouse. Even this particular one you are replacing it with is part of those series when Juo was at the warehouse trying to snap the battery specifications. I tried reaching you on phone but u said you were going to call me back but you didn't. Ill try again all the same. Cheers

FLEXMAX 80 For Sale!

Brand New but 1 week installed.

HISTORY
Met these on site:
- 5kW 48V Sukam Inverter (with 15A Charging Current).
- 8 units of AGM 12V 150Ah configured for 300Ah at 48V.
-2 units of PWM CC (see attached images).
- Panels amounting to 1.6kW. 100W each.
* All installed December 2014.

We advised client to add more panels (at least 1.5kW) and change Charge Controller to MPPT. He said, because of capital investment, for now, he will only change CC to maximise what we have on ground.

After replacing the PWM CCs with this FlexMax 80, the yield was not appreciable.

Client does not want to add panels because of limited funds.

ACTION PLAN:
We advised client to sell off all the solar panels and CC to offset cost of upgrading from Sukam Indian Inverter to Magnum/PRAG-like Inverter with 40-50A charging current, then change batteries to the new flooded USB (from c0ogumo).

That is why we put this CC up for grabs.

Interested? Call 090 999 88 770.

I usually stay away from making this kind of comments am about to but for this one i really feel like i should.

In economics of Engineering, we were thought to make the best use of what the client has on ground already.
You should avoid making changes according to equipment you feel are not pro, rather you should base your design on what the need of the client is. In this case you didn't tell us what the need of your client is. Your planning to sale off the solar panels any replacing it with an expensive inverter doesn't make sense to me except i didn't understand you well. With that system and your recent upgrade to FM80, I want to believe if the installation is properly carried out (with proper cable sizing/quality, proper terminals etc) that the system should be very effective with relative to the size.

What will your client gain buy buying an inverter with almost half a million naira when he doesn't even have batteries? What advantage will he get by buying PRAG over luminous?

In my advice, power generation is always priority to storage. As such, the solar panels which you even want to sale off is more important than the inverter and batteries except the present batteries are bad.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the Sukam inverter if you depend more on solar for charging the battery. Depending on inverter for charging the battery doesn't make economic sense to me except the person is not paying bills for power.

Finally, we always advice client to upgrade only on certain conditions like;
- If he has grown financially over time and wants to move to pro products
- If he has moved to a bigger apartment and can afford the upgrade
- If the system he had installed was wrongly designed and wasn't operational for at least 60% rated efficiency
- If the previous system failed and he could afford something better
- If we are called and asked to upgrade.

The upgrade must make economic sense and improved efficiency before we get involved.

Please pardon me if this is not what you expected

I'll prefer to rate the Inverter and not the company.

on a scale of 0 to 10 I'll rate them 6.

My ratings is based on performance according to specifications, price, durability. It's a little pricy compared to their other China ones.

I installed 2 of them about 3 years ago with the same battery. One of them have gone for repairs repeatedly and at the end they eventually changed it but the other one hasn't had any issue since installation.

So Mercury inverters are also like this? So which inverter will you recommend that won't break the bank ( my cousin's bank dey fragile oooooo grin ) . He is looking at a 12v and 24v DC inverter. Between 2kw to 4kw capacity. He wants the 12v to handle 6nos of fairly used 2V 500AH batteries

There are no short cuts to this thing. It is either you pay small small many times or you close your eyes and buy something reasonable at ones. the price difference may not be too much.

Ill recommend PRAG series for your cousin. Outside the fact that they are improved quality of the others, they also offer support should you by any chance spoil your device. They have;
- 1kVA 12V
- 1.2kVA 12V
- 2kVA 24V
- 2.5kVA 24V
- 4kVA 24V

For your info their power factor is 1.25 so to get the Real power (watts) from the above apparent power, just divide it by the power factor.

Check any of the model that best fits your need and if you are interested I'll give you discount on their retail prices online.

Third on the list is

PRAG INVERTERS

One particular feature of the company that has this brand "PRAG" that interest me is the fact that they have listening ears. Unlike their counterparts in the market like MUST, POWERSTAR, VOLTRON, etc in the same design, PRAG is constantly evolving into a professional product not only with quality improvements but also with professional features. When the company contacted us for our reviews on their products sometime ago, we were able to define the odds and suggested possible improvement features to their products which like joke they are implementing one after the other.

When they bring in new product they always give us opportunity to test and recommend. These products has evovled from the first series which had a transformer defect and as such couldn't stand persistent over 50% load. I remember posting one burnt prag inverter sometime ago on this thread of that first series. In the second series, the transformer defect was corrected but there was yet another defect which was failure in switching when public power returns in most of its units. Some of you must have noticed that when the system is in inverter mode and grid power returns, it will still stay on inverter mode irrespective of the priority switch settings. Now, the third series which is the present series in the market right now did not only have those defects corrected but also added a major professional feature, DEPTH OF DISCHARGE' pot, which enables you to set the depth to which you can discharge your battery down to. You will agree with me that this very important feature is hard to come by in most low cost inverters. You won't see it in the likes of Luminous, MUST, POWERSTAR, SUKAM, MOPOWER, MECURY, VOLTRON, etc. You can only find them in premium inverters like SMA, MAGNUM, XANTREX, OUTBACK, VICTRON, etc.

The second picture below shows close up look of PRAG Depth of Discharge button in one of our installations.
Now you know why PRAG is not the same price with the others of the same design.

Remember we still offer great discounts on all PRAG products. Up to 20% discounts depending on which you buy.

The second device on my list is

WEMO INSIGHT SWITCH

This is a wifi socket adaptor. It allows you to monitor the device you plug on it on your android/ios phone using it's app. It connects to your home router and to your internet for you to monitor and control it remotely from anywhere in the world as long as you have access to internet. the second picture below is my phone screen i just snapped as i am writing this post showing the details of my freezer consumption. From the picture you can see the cumulative time the freezer has been on, the average time daily, the cost if you are paying bills, the average and instantaneous power consumption, etc. You can also see other devices connected to other of there switches. You can see my living room tv in off state as at the time I snapped the screen.

you can turn on/off any device manually remotely or set any timer mode you want at it runs perfectly.

I want to introduce some devices as I promised to be doing long ago.

No. 1 on the list is

MAGNUM PT-100 SOLAR CHARGE CONTROLLER

It is a 100A 200V cc.

I've been testing this device for quite a while now and i can tell you categorically now that it is a good value for your money

If you are hopping to do a large array and the cost of cc have been holding you back, here is the solution.
This device is able to handle up to 6600W solar panels. It is the first 100A MPPT Charge Controller in the market and the price is not what you need to break the banks.

Another beautiful feature is the fact that it can handle up to 187V PV input voltage making it comfortable for you to run larger strings of solar panels in series (up to 4 24v panels) and thereby further reducing the size of cable and thereby cost of cable.

It comes with in built GFDI: Integrated PV Ground-Fault Detection and Interruption/Indication.

It provides higher than 99% charging efficiency and uses less than 2watts of power in night time mode (though i know that Schneider XW 80 600 uses 1watt)

For more details on this device you can visit magnum website or google for the datasheet.

To order for this device use our contacts on our Facebook page 'PBASE Solar'

i am very interested in this... What's the fail-safe mode? If your inverter and utility supply go off, does the timer reset?
I'd love to have a switch/setup that switches my fridge to NEPA when there's power, then to inverter at SOC => 50% when NEPA goes out. When the SOC drops below 50%, it should knock the fridge off the inverter, preserving battery capacity...

Is there a switch/relay/contactor/whatever that can disconnect/reconnect my fridge/water pump depending on my battery voltage?
Like the type that switches off the inverter when the cut-off voltage is breached, and switches it back on at another voltage...

That timer is not capable of doing that which you want.
The only device that i know that is capable of doing that is SMA Radio Controlled Socket pictured below.
How it works is exactly what you are looking for; It stays on as long as there is power from the Grid. When its on inverter, it disconnects at your preset SOC. It is fully programmable. It connects with the SMA Sunny Home Manager which monitors the total power flow and you can also monitor it remotely. You have to be on SMA system to enjoy this.

For me, I have been looking for a device that will do this outside the SMA stuff but i haven't found one yet. What i did in my own case was to design the device by myself to switch on a none inverter AC when my battery is floating and turns it off when the battery has gone down to a certain percentage but keeps it 'on' as when there's power from the grid. I designed this device using simple PIC Microcontroller and contractor. I connected my sSOC signal from my Battery Monitor, but in your own case you can take it directly from your FM60 relay contact.

I believe abunafiu can design this device in commercial quantity for us using simple Logic Gates

@House,

Appreciate your responses and contributions to this question. God bless you all.

I had changed all the cables a month ago, to a new set of 50mm cables, all same size, shorter, about 25cm long. (See attached picture).

I had considered replacing the Inverter with another 3- or 4-stage kind of Inverter with 50A-60A charging current, but what would be done to the Indian Inverter?

So, an option that can be conveniently presented to my Pastor is that of adding an external charger (4-stage preferably).

What brand of this charger is readily available and functional?

Thank you.

There is no user name on nairaland like 'Imo Nkweini' so take serious not of these next time.

For your request, replace the inverter with some other one that can handle flooded battery management as suggested.

You can buy the PRAG 4kVA as suggested by earthrealm or go for something professional like Magnum MS4348PE if you are not constrained by cost.

But note: you won't get PRAG 4KW for 138k as suggested by earthrealm. I'm sure he meant to say 4kVA. 4kW is 210k.

We still re-sale for buyright.

This is beastly. Bro that number is sick. I need 2 kw in poly to get your numbers. You are getting performance that is out of this world. I will try them eventually.

Try Solrworld Solar panels. I have seen 17.4kWh/D from a 3.06kw Solarworld Submodule Mono Panels.
The figure does not depend on the solar panel quality only. It depends also on load and installation.

the unit is about 21 months old. 4 x 250w 24v renogy panels connected in series. input voltage usually hovers around 130v.
system is hooked up to 2 x 200amphr luminous batts, and 1.5kva 24v luminous inverter....

any suggestions would be welcome, attached is a pic of the unit

I've tried reading thorough the various contributions to these though I'm not sure if i got all the details from the replies.
Just as it is suggested, it is always safe (and also specified by standards) to leave a safety room on your charge controller loadings but that is always referring to the total load capacity not just instantaneous big voltages.

I am sure it is not the high voltage that destroyed your cc because it can accommodate that panels configuration comfortably. As long as you do not have an open cct in your dc line theres no way you cc will hit the Voc ratings and even if it could, you wouldn't have a sun intensity that will produce that peak Voc for long enough to destroy the cc. Since load is always connected to the system the Vmp should be the considered voltage for your evaluation.

2x2 is not a very good option for a 48v system. I've had to do 4x4 in some installations where certain conditions demanded that using Morningstar and Outback cc and they've been up and running for years now.

Your problem could've been lightening, reverse current, earth leakage etc. but most likely lightening. Most lightenings that destroys doesn't necessarily come with loud thunder and so might not be noticed.

In history, I have done a lot of installations and have never had any failed Charge Controller. One of my secrets is MIDNITESOLAR LIGHTENING ARRESTOR MNDC115, or 300 depending on your application. How it works; whether you are using 3x3, 4x4 or 10x10 configuration in your installations, the MNDC115 makes sure your cc does not see more than 150v. You would also discover that your solar panels will only get these peaking ratings intermittently and not always so allowing you to enjoy a high yield form a higher voltage config. while still keeping your system safe.

Check them out on our installations on our Facebook page "PBASE Solar". I have also attached a picture of one below running on a 3x3 configuration in an off grid installation.

Has Anybody had a bad experience with Richmond. Just did 16m transaction and d guy is holding on to a 500k equipment for a balance of 300k which I promised to settle at d end of d day.
Meanwhile I sent 10m to him for over 2 months without meeting him. Business trust must flow both ways. Learnt my lesson. Just disappointed.

I have actually wanted to ignore this useless post for so many reasons one being the fact that this thread is a DIY and not a business thread but I've been pressurised by many of you not to keep quiet.
I can't really say what hisenjos motive was in posting this stuff. I thought maybe he wanted to gain sympathy from any well wisher on this thread who would have paid the money on his behave or maybe pressurise me to bend business principles and dash him extra goods because he paid for some or maybe just give him goods on credit without agreement.

First of all hisenjos did not say I committed any crime nor that I ran away with his money nor that I broke any part of the deal we had.
In as much as I wouldn't want to go into so many details here because I know Dr Inyang (as kiekie calls him) is human prone to errors and that he'll surely regret this post he made in his time of madness and apologise to everyone here for attempting character assassination (i.e if he is the type that realises his mistakes), I will not just leave the notion open as advised by some big shots who reads this thread.

Here are some few points I want everyone to note:

1. hisenjos did not at any point in the business transaction apply for any form of credit facility. If he did we wouldn't have given him for a couple of reasons; (i) you don't give credit facility on first time business. (ii) the gain margin for his job was too low to allow for credit. (iii) he proved himself to be untrusted in some things I might explain later. (iv) he does not have any grounds to ask for credit facility on this project because he is not the consumer. it is a project in which he has been adequately mobilised or even down payed completely with a lot of profit.

He told me the previous day that the bank was doing upgrade so he couldn't access funds to pay the balance that he was going to do it the following day. Surprisingly the following day he called that he is going to the office to pick up the first set off items without making mention of the payment and when I asked him he said he was very busy that he'll make the transfer before the day runs out that he wants to quickly run to the warehouse to load the battery. Any sensible man will start perceiving something fishy at this point so what i simply did was gave instructions only one item be held until we see the payment later in the day as he promised. But obviously he didn't have any plans of paying the money at all. He just wanted to cart away with the goods on a smart way but since I out smarted him he now came to this thread in wish he contributes nothing to the growth of it to wash his dirty linens.

2. hisenjos did not pay me 10m for 2 months out of trust as claimed. He made whatever transaction because he knew I have integrity which I have built over a period of time as most of you know and he also knew I can't risk that. We had a business contract of 21m and he made a 1m commitment fee to seal the deal. He later paid 9m about 1 month later to secure 48 pieces of Hoppecke 2V 2170AH batteries because I was the cheapest source he could get and also he was at risk of loosing the batteries if he didn't secure it. To prove that he didn't do it out of trust he had to come to the warehouse with a lawyer to confirm the goods were actually existing before he later made additional payment.

3. He has bridged the terms of contracts in several ways yet I forgive him because I respect him as my Elder and brother and still want to do business with him. We have been providing free technical support to hisenjos for over 3 months on this project. We even offered him a free installation and free introduction to cheaper hybrid solar mount.

This is one thread that he visits everyday to get informations which have empowered him a lot even up to picking my installation pictures to use and present as he's for contracts yet he constantly try to do things that will destroy the progress and safty of the thread. Sometimes ago he posted the kiekie (that everyone here can attest to his prudent delivery) was running away with his TEN THOUSAND NAIRA and later removed it after Frank sent him the money and now it is me he want to attack. What he doesn't know is that as it is written in the gospel according to Tufes Idibia; WHOM GOD HAS BLESSED NO MAN CAN COURSE.

I rest my case.

Thanks for your business though.
Please do help us confirm to this thread that we have delivered the following items to you:
- 48pcs of Hoppecke 2170AH 2 V batteries
- 40pcs of Solarworld SW265 265w mono solar panels

- 2 pcs of SMA Sunny Mini Central 11000TL - 11kw PV inverter (Held back 1pc which suppose to make it 3)

also remember to tell everyone that our prices are unbeatable and that even after sealing the deal you still appealed for price reduction and we still consented except for the solar panels which I had to add 2k because of your blondes and also for the fact that the price have gone by 2k as cookie can confirm to you.

Have a look at this table of Amercian Wire Gauges to guide you in the future. Wire ampacity capability and power transmission ampacity don't necessarily go hand in hand. I'm putting it here as a reminder for myself too.

This is not a correct wire chart for use with DC.
Look out for DC Cable sizing charts on UK sites.

For your information also
A 16mm2 flexible cable of one meter is capable of handling up to 94 amp of 24v DC at 1% acceptable loss.
Therefore the cable attached to the 1.4kva Sukam inverter is for more sufficient to do its job at 100% load which will only draw about 46amp.
Moreso, no body expects you to load inverter up to 100% for a prolonged period.
This is the last time I'll talk about this.

Nope, I didn't plug the cooker directly to the inverter, just a room wall socket wired into the distribution panel which the inverter supplies. However, I did plug the cooker into a kilowatt meter and the reading was about 798 watts, approx 800 watts. Only other load on at the time, was a single 11 watt energy saver bulb. Thing is, the overload alarm didn't even go off, so it must have registered that the power being consumed was less that its rating, yet the wires were still hot in all trials and smelt burnt in like 2 out of maybe 5 trials.

This was just a test for me in order to see if I can run that LG cool gen inverter AC comfortably, but typically, I run max about 400 watts on that inverter, with maybe 1000 watts for like 10 secs when the fridge is starting with other loads, so I've never really had cause to monitor it.

I've already started a savings plan to get a larger inverter in the next few months, for peace of mind. I believe a pre-wired larger inverter at 24v would at least come with wires capable of handling 70% of their rating without the wires getting too hot (maybe just warm). Or better still, a 48V system (less current), but those are a bit more expensive.

Funny thing is, I already bought my mppt tracer charge controller, remote monitor, fuses... and was now saving for panels, before I realized a bigger inverter should come first angry it's really always good to think far ahead in the RE world so your not just buying mismatched systems sad

The one thing you must not is that these inverters have their THDs over 10% meaning the output wave form is no more pure sine wave after about 50% load capacity and it gets worse as you increase the load.

But for the cable ratings I can say with authority that that cable attached to those inverters are capable of handling 100% of their load capacity without warming up.

What I'll advice is that you unhook the inverter, clean up both the battery and inverter contacts and reconnect them firmly and run the test again.

Thanks dude! I will definitely check out the install. I actually did it myself and didn't use a washer, just a nut to tighten the connection between the battery terminal and the cable ring terminal. An electrician recently worked on something in that room and had to disconnect and reconnect the batteries, so I'll check.

Though the hottest part of the wire, from my observation, was the negative part coming out of the inverter. That wire was supa dupa hot!!! If I had my way, I'd have installed 2 gauge wire in there, but since it's pre-wired, I'd have to open it up, which is a no no.

I've seen you use some PRAG inverters in your install, how are they working out for you? I know the 4kva 24V&48V PRAG don't come pre-wired, so you can basically do wire sizing yourself to get the correct AWG for the system.

I can't get specs of the wire the PRAG 2.5kva uses, but I wonder if it looks safe (pic attached). it seems they are joining two wires together to up the amp carrying capacity.

The wires are not heating up because they are under rated. I can say that authoritatively. there must be something wrong with the system for the wire to get hot. If you increase the wire gauge without correcting the error in the system you are further increasing the system risk. Plz do keep fire extinguisher handy.

I have used that inverter you are talking about in many applications and they work just great. PRAG 2.5kva isn't going to be a solution either. The only thing you'll gain is the extra power that's all. PRAG inverters are rated at 1.25 power factor meaning 2.5kva is 2kw and that's a lot of power for a home.

Meanwhile we still resale all PRAG products at discounted prices so if you still make up your mind to buy one you are free to contact us.

Hey house!!!

Please has anyone tried the PRAG 2.5Kva 24V inverter?

I have a 1.4Kva sukam that came pre-wired (i.e, the wires for the batrery were already attached to it), so i figured I'd test the rating to see just how safe those wires are in terms of current handlng.

So i plugged in an 800watt pressure cooker to the inverter circuit and within minutes, I could smell burnt wire, even though no overload alarm went off. I switched the unit off and felt the wire, which was blistering hot. Obviously, this cant be safe for long term use, as it may start a fire.

I just need info from anyone who's used the prag 24v 2.5kva inverter, to see if they've loaded at least 1300watts on it without the wires melting, since it also comes prewired for battery connection.

There are 2 possible reasons why the wires could have heated up. The first reason (unlikely) could be that the inverter was faulty. The second reason (most likely) which is very common is that there was improper/loose contact.

Loose contacts is the most common problem we encounter in DIY/Semi professional setups. Those loose contacts causes what is called arcing in electrical circuits and is capable of burning down a house.

Be sure that your battery terminals are firmly tightened to the specified torque by the manufacturers.

I have come across some installations where the installer inserts a washer in-between the battery cable and the battery terminal. This is wrong.

If there ever was a Shock & Fire Hazard award- this, for sure, would take home the grand prize. Enough wiring to disorientate one's brain! grin
Must have been a free installation; otherwise, I don't get how one can pay to have a setup like this.

You sure cleaned up the owner's corner. Kudos!

it will shock you to hear that the cost for the previous installation is higher than what we charged for ours

This last installation was in a twin flat building so the neighbour who's been using the same inverter and battery also had to request for the same system. His house was on the south face roof side so the installations was flat on the roof.
