Nice thread.

I just decided to pursue a career in HSE, a graduate of Microbiology, finished my service last year. I recently registered for HSE under one of these numerous training centers, but from the info I have read here, seems I am on the wrong path. I will definitely make amends.

Presently working as a Solar energy trainer and installer (I learnt it during my NYSC and it is paying my bills presently) have exposed me to various degrees of risks which also applies to every sector of labor and hence the importance of HSE.

In a bid to improve my knowledge on HSE, I am also taking a free online course on Alison.com. After one of my classes (TOPIC-WORK STATION ERGONOMICS) questions popped up in my head of which I will ask experienced HSE professionals in the house.

The questions goes thus:
*Do they practice health and safety in Nigerian schools especially secondary and primary schools?
*Are there opportunities for HSE professionals in the education (lecturing excluded) sector in Nigeria

Please your answers and contributions are paramount to me, as those questions have given birth to ideas that can carve out opportunities for me and improve me.

When I get contributions I will share the idea, because I will be needing your guidance in the course of it.

Thanks for creating this thread which is up to 9 years old.

I am HSE POSITIVE.

The HSE professional is still developing in Nigeria. We may not have HSE integrated into the educational system fully as at present, but as the profession is broadening out from the industrial sector to other sectors, we are getting to a point where HSE will be practiced fully in every sector.

Some educational institutions have started employing HSE Personnel, am sure it will get better with time.

What we need is to continue creating the awareness.

Our collective ideas, creativity, passion and ingenuity is what the HSE profession needs.

Let us play a part.

First I'll like to appreciate everyone for their meaningful contribution to this thread. God bless you all mightily. I took OmaniPadmeHum's advice to stick to ISPON certifications at the start as a newbie. I took a stroll to the Oyo State ISPON secretariat yesterday, I met with the receptionist and the state chair-woman. I found out the following;

#As a graduate (B.Sc/ HND), one will start with General HSE (Cost N45,000 + Form N 2,000 = N47,000) which will last for 5days (9am -5pm daily). Exam will follow on the fifth day. ND holders maybe asked to start with HSE 1, 2 (Can't say cos I didn't bother to ask).

#After General HSE, one can follow it up with HSE 3 (Cost N25,000 + Form N 2,000 = N27,000) which will last for 4days (9am -5pm daily). Exam will follow on the fourth day. (The form for General HSE is different from the form for HSE 3, as the certificates are different).

FOR THOSE ON THIS THREAD WHO WANTS TO KNOW IF TAKING THE BASIC HSE CERTIFICATIONS FROM OTHER TRAINING CENTERS IS OKAY/RECOGNIZED
According to the receptionist, she said it has become compulsory for those employed in HSE oriented fields to register with ISPON no matter how far they've gone with certifications. To become a registered member, they require you to have their General HSE and HSE 3 certificates. All this Basic HSE 1, 2,3 being advertised all over the place won't do one any good because they won't accept it if one is to become a member of the institute. UK HSE offered by novelle centre is good cos of it's affiliation to BISO but what's the use if ISPON will still tell me to apply for their own basic HSE courses if i'm to become a member? We all know the answer. The lady showed me a form of a guy who just applied for membership, she said the ONLY reason they accepted he's application was because of the NEBOSH certificate he attached to it, but not the HSE 1, 2, 3 he did somewhere else. That may not be the case for other states though i.e. they may not accept a NEBOSH certificate as they did for the guy.

With General HSE and HSE 3 one can become a member, get a job with God's favour and grace; then one can continue to climb the ladder just as many has advised on this thread.

For the registration to become a member, it costs N40,000 as at yesterday (that's the price in OYO SATE don't know of other states).

Other information are available in the attached pictures.
God bless you all.

Nice share. This information will be beneficial to a lot of people that are interested in the HSE Profession and also in being an ISPON member.

After registering for the NEBOSH IGC, your course provider should provide you with necessary materials; or are you looking for materials to start reading ahead before you register?

Plz I am a novice in the health and safety industry, I wanted to know if it is advisable to go for NEBOSH without going for the hse level 1-3 training. Does it have any complications Thanks.

P.s I called one of the training institutes yesterday to ask. I was told that it doesn't matter.
You need the foundation before enrolling for NEBOSH, else you may find it difficult to pass.

In addition to what my distinguished colleague just said, understand that not all certificates awarding bodies are recognized. Also not all will give you the value of the certificate they issue out due to deficiency in having competent instructors. So act wisely. NISP/ISPON is one of the most recognized HSE awarding body in Nigeria. So I will also advice that you enroll with ISPON, so that you will not end up wasting your money. I learnt this during my NYSC program. So I had to run basic HSE courses twice. I did 1st with an unrecognized body. I still had to start afresh with NISP.

Am also of the opinion that you consider OHSAS 18001, or on the contrary, wait till a final resolution is made on ISO 45001 so that you avoid the stress of migrating from OHSAS 18001 to ISO 45001. Keep in touch, i will recommend some certifications that will be relevant in the power sector for you.
