Nigerian weddings have become very popular in recent years due to the extravagance and lavish spendings involved. No wonder many many events planners are now scurrying into the wedding planning business to get a share of the booty.

While the rich are known for flaunting their wealth with cartons of champagne and exotic hors d'oeuvres for wedding guests, the average or middle class families also strive impress their own guests too and at the same time keep the party within the means of their pockets.

I have attended some really classy weddings, but since I don't exactly roll with the Otedolas or Dangotes of the society, I tend to find myself attending more of the 'regular' weddings (if you know what I mean).

There are some things that I have noticed in these sort of weddings which I find very distasteful, and I think they need to stop. Since we're still in the early days of 2015, I believe this is the right time to address these issue once and for all.

Below are things that we shouldn't be seeing anymore in Nigerian weddings this year:

1)Cubed cakes

Is it just me or does anyone else get really pissed
when the couple cuts a six-tier wedding cake and
then the caterers pass around a tray filled with
tiny cubes of cake? Honestly, I would appreciate a
handful of groundnut to this. Is it by force to
share cake? As if that is not enough, the most
popular wedding favours in this kind of setting is
a tiny plate of chin-chin for a table of 10. Like
seriously! Are your wedding guests hungry
beggars that have to scramble for snacks at your
party? Please, this has to stop quickly.

2)Forcing single ladies to catch the bouquet

One of the fun aspects of the wedding reception is
when the bride throws her bouquet, and willing
single ladies playfully wrestle for it. Note that I
said 'willing single ladies.' I totally detest it when
the MC announces that it's time for the single
ladies to come out to catch the bouquet, and if
they're not satisfied with the number of girls who
have stepped out, resort to raining curses on the
unwilling ones, or even going as far as
insinuating that they are not happy for the bride.

You hear things like: 'if you're truly happy for this
couple and you want to experience a joyful day
like this, come out and catch the bouquet,' or 'if
you are ashamed to come out, God will be
ashamed to give you a husband,' or 'there are
some eligible bachelors here and they are looking
for their future wife, if you don't step out, how
will they see you and propose to you?' Jeez! I
really don't know why some couple allow this
sort of insults on their guests. If I don't feel the
need to stand up and catch a bouquet, why must
you insult me for exercising my human right?
Let's stop turning a moment of fun into an
avenue to attack innocent people, PLEASE!


3)Irrelevant souvenirs

Don't you just hate it when some family members
of either the bride or groom go about sharing
packs of noodles, or matches or even tin tomato!
Why?! Souvenirs are meant to be memorable;
when you see them in the next one month or one
year, they remind you of the occasion where they
were given to you. But how are you supposed to
remember a pack of noodles after eating the
contents? Are you meant to frame the foil and
hang it on the wall of your living room? Please, a
word of advice to family and friends - if you don't
have something tangible and worthy to give your
guests, then please don't bother. I'm sure the
memory of the tasty meal they ate at the wedding
would linger longer than those embarrassing
souvenirs. Thank you!


4)Discriminating against guests not wearing Aso-
Ebi: Aso-Ebi (uniform family attire) has become
very popular at Nigerian weddings. Gone are the
days when this trend was restricted to the Yoruba
tribe alone. Now it's a national thing. It is mostly
done to ensure uniformity with the wedding
colour/theme, and it makes the venue pleasant to
look at. However, not everybody is a fan of Aso-
Ebi. Some people would buy theirs from the
couple's family but not wear them, probably
because they don't like the colour or pattern of
the fabric, or simply because they want to be
unique. Sadly, these 'unique guests' have become
victims of discrimination. Most times, you see the
waiters skipping them to serve an 'Aso-Ebi guest'
at the far back of the hall. Even ordinary table
water passes them by! If you ask the waiters why
they did not serve these guests, they would
promptly tell you that they have been instructed
by their superiors not to serve 'Mogbo
moya' (uninvited guests) before serving the
invited guests.

Well, technically it's not their fault. If they don't know these people personally, it may be difficult to tell if they were invited or not. Though I believe a simple 'invited-guests-
only' policy should be enforced to prevent this
embarrassing situation. Or better still, a family
member should be assigned to lead these waiters
and help them identify who is who, since the
previously mentioned policy may not be effective
in Nigerian weddings.


5)Razz Live Bands and Wack DJs

Live bands have also grown in popularity in
recent years. Almost everybody is a musician
nowadays. Oh well, it's not really a bad thing to
have an affordable live band perform at your
wedding, especially if you can't afford a Wizkid or
Tiwa Savage. But I think you would be doing your
guests a huge of favour if you take time to listen
to them rehearse the songs they would be
singing at your wedding.

Some singers don't even know the name of the people getting married, and they end up mentioning wrong
names to horror of the newlyweds. Also, if you
must hire a DJ, be sure to give him/her a playlist
to follow or else your guests will either dance to
Terry G's 'Free Madness', or simply sit down and
pray for the song to end quickly.


6)MC/Comedian/Head Usher

Since some couples cannot afford to pay a
professional MC, they solicit the help of a jovial
family member to help them out. Unfortunately,
they fail to spell out the MC's duties, and because
of this, you find such a person acting as the
event host and also playing the role of a
comedian to entertain wedding guests. As if that
is not enough, this same person also involves
himself/herself in coordinating waiters and
ushers. Suddenly, the MC is all over the place!

And when it's time to invite the couple to come
out for their first dance, someone from the high
table would have to announce this in place of the
missing MC/comedian/head usher. Totally
confusing. Anything worth doing is worth doing
well, biko!

Let's hope these trends will come to a screeching
halt as we continue into 2015

Frank Lampard has finally signed his Major League
Soccer contract to play for New York City FC.
NYCFC confirmed to The Associated Press on Saturday
that this week Lampard signed a contract to start in
July - midway through the new team's first season in
MLS.
The announcement followed the AP detailing repeated
misleading public statements from NYCFC and partner
club Manchester City about Lampard's status.
NYCFC stated last July that Lampard signed a two-year
contract to start in August 2014. Within two weeks, Man
City said the former Chelsea midfielder was returning to
the Premier League on ''loan,'' having previously
categorically ruled out playing for another English club.
But after the Man City stay was extended on Dec. 31
until June, it emerged that Lampard was in fact on a
permanent deal in England. Such was the confusion, the

The accident happened at Angbaaye, a few kilometres after Makurdi, the state capital.

The governor’s official vehicle in which he was travelling and his spare vehicle were directly affected by the impact of the crash. The two officials who were in the same vehicle escaped unhurt.


Governor Gabriel Suswam of Benue State and his deputy, Chief Steven Lawani, were involved in a ghastly road accident on Friday in which eight people were injured.The accident came a day before the governor’s 50th birthday which holds today. It was gathered that the governor and his deputy were on their way to an official assignment in Wannune, Tarka Local Government Area and Gboko when the accident occurred.
According to an eyewitness, an oncoming vehicle which overtook another vehicle lost control, sommersaulted, then hit the spare vehicle of the governor as well as the vehicle in which both the governor and his deputy were travelling.
The governor’s spare vehicle was badly damaged while the impact of the accident on the on coming vehicle was very severe.
Both the governor and his deputy however rushed to rescue the victims in the oncoming vehicle who were believed to be traders heading to Makurdi.
Governor Suswam, who detailed some top government officials to
take the injured persons to the hospital in Makurdi, however, proceeded to Gboko where he flagged off road project, while his deputy alighted at Tarka Local Government where he flagged off tree planting project.The eight people who were injured were rushed to Benue State University Teaching Hospital, Makurdi, for medical attention.As a follow up to the governor’s 50th birthday ceremony which holds today, he has also scheduled a thanksgiving ceremony for tomorrow, at Aper Aku Stadium. President Goodluck Jonathan is expected at the ceremony.

“He was apprehended by the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force on 9/11/14 at the National Youth Service Corps orientation camp in Awgu for allegedly stealing an NYSC tag and using same to produce his own tag, with the same tag number 1614.

The Suspect who is now pleading for forgiveness claimed that he actually got into Abia State University in Uturu between 2010-2013 where he graduated from the Department of Industrial physics. since he was not called up to the orientation Camp at Awgu, he had to steal a tag from a corps member, from where he did a tag for himself to enable him have a free access in the camp.
The Police spokesman in Enugu State, Mr. Ebere Amaraizu, DSP, said Onyekwere, claimed to be an indigene of Ihube Okigwe, Imo State and that he was residing in Ghana. the suspect equally claimed to have graduated from the Abia State University Uturu, in the Department of Industrial Physics.
Photographs in his ‘call up letter’, as presented, was quite different from the one in the system of the NYSC orientation camp.
He confirmed that he came to the orientation camp with a call up letter that is different from the one in the NYSC system and that he has stayed up to three days in the camp.

Until now, Niger State had enjoyed relative peace since the 2012 bombing attacks on churches in Madallah and Suleja.
At about 11:45 a.m. Nigerian time yesterday , a Female suicide bomber blew up an explosive device inside the Federal College of Education, Kontagora, in Niger State. It was Reported that the bomb instantly killed the suicide bomber and left two female students critically wounded. The suicide bomber was heading for the lecture auditorium to detonate the explosives, but missed the target as the bomb exploded near a photocopying cabin . The neck and lower body of the bomber were mutilated, the identity of the dead bomber was yet to be ascertained.
The suicide bombing at the school in Kontagora came barely 48 hours after a similar attack in Potiskum that killed 49 students.
A sources described the female bomber as in her mid-20s,
adding that her ethnic identity was unclear.
Security agents reportedly arrested another bomber at the institution and handed her over to the military at the artillery regiment in the town of Kontagora. The alleged second bomber is said to be under intensive watch at an undisclosed hospital in Kontagora.
Just two days ago, a suicide bomber pretending to be a student of Government Science Secondary School, Potiskum detonated a bomb during the early morning assembly of the school, killing himself and about 35 students, with over 80 others injured.

Sean Tizzle Accused Of Stealing ‘Perfect Gentleman’ Song
A singer by the name of Portah claims that pop act Sean Tizzle stole a chorus of his that was used in his hit song ‘Perfect Gentleman’.
Portah who is an Ibadan based act has come out to say he is the composer of the ‘Perfect Gentleman’ hook, but was not informed by Sean Tizzle or D’Tunes.
The upcoming act made this claim during an exclusive interview with THE NET.
In the story, Portah recollects how he met D’Tunes in STAR FM in Ibadan when the producer and Sean Tizzle were making promo rounds for their hit single ‘Sho Le’.
According to Portah, D’Tunes recognized him as one of his BBM acquaintances in the past. After catching up with the budding singer, D’Tunes promised the Lead City undergraduate that he was going to sign him.
On January 2, 2014, D’Tunes called up Portah, told him to come to his studio and bring his songs along. The songs were 21 in total.On getting to the studio D’Tunes copied Portah’s song from the
two CDs he bought to his system.
In Portah’s narration of events, D’Tunes revealed to him that a friend of his based in the UK was interested in signing him, but wanted to use the producer as the front for the label.
D’Tunes further told him that when his friend from the UK comes to Nigeria in a few months, the record deal will be made.
The producer later asked him if he was interested in writing for Sean Tizzle, and Portah said yes.
Nothing however materialized from that because according to him D’Tunes didn’t pick his calls or answer his texts after that day in the studio.
The upcoming singer said he was unaware his chorus was used in Sean Tizzle’s ‘Perfect Gentleman’ until a friend of his sang the hook and told him it was off the pop act’s debut album. Portah downloaded the song and found out it was true.
Portah claims that he reached out to D’Tunes afterwards, but the award winning producer said that he did not jack his chorus.
A representative of D’Tunes’ label Difference Entertainment, Johnson has reacted to the allegations.
“The guy is fabricating all these, because the song ‘Perfect Gentleman’ was done with me and a lot of other people in the studio” he stated.

"The students had gathered for the morning assembly when something exploded in their midst with a thunderous sound‎ at exactly 7:50 am (0650 GMT).
The explosion has affected many students but I can't say how many
because we are now evacuating the victims to the hospital which is just 100 metres (yards) away," the teacher added, sobbing.
A medic at the Potiskum General Hospital where the victims were taken said scores of students had
been admitted.
"We are still receiving casualties from the school which is a stone's throw from here. Our priority now is to save the injured, so we have not started a headcount of the victims."
A local resident, Adamu Alkassim, said there was confusion in and around the school but the scene was a mass of abandoned footwear and blood. There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack but Boko Haram militants are likely to be the prime suspects.

The plane reportedly struck a crane at the Grand Bahama Ship
Yard, exploding on impact and crashing into the ground near a junkyard area.
The Department of Civil Aviation reported that the plane was a Lear 36 executive jet which departed the Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) for the Grand Bahama International Airport.
The plane left LPIA at 4.07pm with nine people on board and crashed while making an approach for landing at Grand Bahama International Airport at 5.10pm, the Department of Civil Aviation said.
