robonski15: There was this particular time I wanted to harvest some fish buyerrs came to my farm(iya eleja) and one of them told me she wanted to pee so I instructed my worker to take her to d toilet but unknowingly she went to do some ritual right there in the toilet when she came out she said she wanted to look at the fish so I took her to the pond.. After I completely drained all the water. They said that they can't buy at the stipulated price again,I had to send them away but to my surprise when I wanted to pump water back to the pond guess what the pumping machine did not pump.. U may think its a coincidence but its not it was perfectly planned by them.. I began sourcing for water and I finally had to call them back.. Guess what as I was selling to them and needed water to add to there big bowls the pumping machine picked up..

I have heard so many stories by fish farmers about this women.. If u want to harvest look out for buyers before that time and check out the buyers in terms of character and composure.. Don't allow any dick and harry into your farm all in the name of sale.. Before the buyers come u would have catch a fish as sample to show them and negotiate the price before anytin else... All what am saying may sound strange to some but its one of the hidden truth in catfish business.. Its better to get one good customer than a thousand..

At the fifth month with hard work keeping to details I attained 1kg and above.. The fishes where healthy and strong but it was not easy my brother..
I spent roughly 650,000 on feeding alone.. And I sold all for about 1,800,000.. BOY!!! I was fuffiled and very happy that yes I made it this time around.. So my net profit was roughly 1,000,000 if u subract salary, fuel,drugs etc..

per kg i am assuming that some will not get to 1kg and you migth have to sell at less than N400, Please enlighten me more.

the first time i did not change the water as regularly as i did in the second and third one and i did not use anything else apart from just feeding them in all the three harvest i have been able to recoup my capital but really cant say i have made any real profit. in the second one i changed water regularly and fed them well without any medication at all the third time was when i used the bio medication i talked about
i suspect that maybe the species of fingerlings i bougth from someone migth be responsible.

i need to know where to buy the best breed and type of fingerlings that would grow to be large in size and what kind of medication i have to use from this fingerlings stage to get them to be big in three to four months not just a few being big i mean all of them beeing big.

@excelsiorfarm thanks for your prompt response at the time of harvest i have would have already sorted them into sizes as i sort them three to four times before harvest and i also keep them for at least four months the biiggest sizes are mostly on an average og 0.9-0.8kg while the rest are within the 0.7-0.6kg margin the only medication i give them is this bio that i mix in warm water and sprinke on their feed to aid in digestion and all and i only did that for the last 5000 i stocked .

i just stocked another 5000 fingerlings last week tuesday i want to see what the difference will be with you guidance and advice. i feed twice a day morning and nigth, but when they are small as in when they eat 0.8-1.2 mm i feed them regularly also when they eat 2mm i feed them as often as they are hungry but when they start eating 3mm and 4mm i feed them twice a day.

i have not really used any serious medication for them except that bio (orange pack) sorry i cant remmember the full name now so many things on my mind.i have also noticed that the ones that get to 1kg and above which are a few are not really that big in size.

Guys i am happy to finally be able to say something on this forum i have read several contributions and i must say am impressed, that said my name is Obinna Nwogu i work and live in port harcourt, i have a fish pond in my compound,my ponds are twelve in number(concrete ponds) with a capacity of at least 1500 per pond i started this bussiness a year ago August 2013 i have harvested and sold three time since i started i have enough space to build a hatchery but i am putting that on hold until i get much more experience. from each harvest i learn more and improve by the next harvestso afr i have not lost money neither have i made the money am supposed to make, but am patient and i know that i have a lot to learn and am not rushing. on my three harvest i only stocked five thousand fingerlings, though my pond can contain 18-20000 fingerlings if i decide to stock it fully and i have enough money to feed them for four or five months but that is not what i want for now i want to understand this bussiness very well i do it myself without any more help than from my gateman and my wife.
Gentlemen the essence of this my long and boring story is to ask for help i have harvested three times but i am not impressed with the size of fish i get, mind you i did not say the weigth i said the size, i change my water in my ponds every two to three days i feed them zeigler feed and i buy my feed in bulk i have a dedicated borehole and generator in short i have the ideal facility what i need is to produce the fish of the rigth size and weigth and understand what i need to do to get them to that weigth and size before i stock my farm fully to it maximum capacity.

I need help and advice gentlemen and i know that there are seasoned and experienced farmers on this forum to help me acheive my goal.
