“In the quiet of the night, screams echoed through the hills of Benue State.” It was the eve of Christmas, December 25, 2023, when the tranquility of the highland villages in Benue State was shattered by an unimaginable horror. The Otukpo people, like millions across the world, were preparing to celebrate the birth of Christ. In their homes, children gathered around Christmas trees, families shared warm meals, and communities planned to attend midnight mass. But as the clock ticked toward midnight, an eerie silence fell across the hills, replaced only by the rapid crackle of gunfire and the sound of flames consuming homes. By morning, entire villages were reduced to ashes. The attackers, suspected to be armed Fulani militia, had descended with brutal precision. The scale of the assault was staggering—over 150 souls were lost, many of them women, children, and the elderly. The survivors fled, running for their lives into the forests, onto the roads, or into the nearest cities. For the survivors, the attacks were not only an assault on their bodies but an assault on their identity. A sense of betrayal permeated the air.
