To break it down for Nigerians in USA. You can enter USA legally through the airport and still be an illegal immigrant.

1. F-1 Student visa: You come for school, you graduate, applied for OPT/STEM OPT, fail to secure job within 1/3 years, you automatically become illegal after OPT expires. That means the DSO expire your record on SEVP portal and Trump can deport you.

2. B visiting via: You overstay your visiting visa, you are automatically termed illegal. You can be deported if Trump wants.

3, H visa: A company sponsor you to USA and you're on H-1B. If something happen and you get sacked, you have until some months to secure another job so another company can file for you. Failure to do that, you don turn illegal. Trump can deport you.

What guys usually do before is just to chill, find someone to marry, then file greencard. Some student still dey do EB-1/Eb-2 before they graduate. That is currently going well for EB-2 and there are record approval. E sure me say Trump go reduce the approval rate.
