Politics9 Reasons Why Nigeria's 8th Assembly Is A Joke! by rommyth(op): 11:06am On Jun 25, 2016
The recent trend of happenings in Nigeria's political space has left everyone to conclusively say the country is a joke! Especially with the law makers, ever since the inauguration of the 8th Assembly in June 2015, the National Assembly activities have been marred with a lot of flaws than praises. These do not mean well for a striving nation like ours.

----
1. Lazy Lawmaking: The Nigerian Senate on Thursday, 23 June embarked on a 17-day holiday. Senate President Bukola Saraki announced the resumption to be Tuesday 12th July, 2016. It would be recalled that in May 2016, the senate was shut, and adjourned plenary for one week to enable members of the Peoples Democratic Party, in the chamber, to attend the party congresses.

2. Hasty Passage of Bills: Nigerian Senate under the leadership of Dr. Bukola Saraki on Tuesday, June 14, began consideration to alter the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, passing 13 bills for second reading in seven minutes.

The decision was taken on the floor of the Senate during plenary as it was referred to the committee on constitutional review chaired by Ike Ekweremadu, the deputy Senate president. This seems to be the trend with the Nigerian Senate as it in June 2015 passed 46 bills into law in less than ten minutes under the leadership of Senator David Mark.

3. Purchased Expensive Vehicles: The Nigerian Senate under the leadership of Dr. Bukola Saraki purchased Toyota LXR V8 Land Cruisers for 36 of its 109 members. The vehicle cost N36.5 million for each. The move by the Senate leadership to acquire these exotic SUVs for senators drew the fury of Nigerians when former President Olusegun Obasanjo wrote a letter to the federal lawmakers in December. In the same month, President Buhari also faulted the move in his maiden presidential media chat. However, the lawmakers ignored the advice and went ahead to acquire the cars in April at twice the market price at the whooping cost of N36.5m each. This came at a time when the nation is battling with a terrible economy, and states' inability to pay their workforce. The reason for the purchase of these vehicles cannot be totally justified when these senators already have exotic cars.

4. A Divided House: A house that is divided against itself cannot stand. Just recently, the All Progressives Congress and Labour Party law makers in the Nigerian Senate passed a vote of confidence on President Muhammadu Buhari's administration. The Peoples Democratic Party senators vowed to discontinue cooperation with the APC-led Federal Government. With such a sharp divide in the nation's law-making body, this may spell doom when debating sensible policies.

5. Sex Scandal: Three Lawmakers have recently been alleged of a sex scandal in the United States, consequently leading to the canceellation of their visas to enter the country. The affected members – Mr. Mohammed Garba-Gololo (Bauchi State); Mr. Terse Gbillah (Benue State), and Mr. Samuel Ikon (Cross River State) – allegedly committed the act during a recent trip to the US to participate in the International Visitor Leadership Programme on Good Governance organised by the US Government. The US Department of State and the Cleveland Council on World Affairs says Mohammed Garba Gololo allegedly grabbed a housekeeper in his hotel room and solicited her for sex while Mark Terseer Gbillah and Samuel Ikon allegedly requested that hotel parking attendants assist them to solicit prostitutes. Though the alleged House of Representatives members have denied the allegation, telling the United States to present proofs but the allegation is disgraceful as it sounds for Nigerian lawmakers.

6. 'Fat' Wardrobe Allowance: A week after the inauguration of the Senate, reports had it that each of the 109 senators was given N506, 000 to fill their wardrobe with ‘senatorial attires’. The money was released at a time when many states were finding it difficult to pay workers’ salaries.

7. Protests “For” And “Against” Saraki: For days in April 2016, protesters held vigil at the entrance of the National Assembly, demanding Saraki’s resignation while another group insisted he must remain in office. The protesters demanding for his resignation spent 72 hours and three nights at the entrance of the National Assembly. The protesters hinged their request on the CCT trial and the purchase of exotic cars. Some other controversies also include the hire of 282 aides, increase in the number of standing committees from 57 to 65 without amending Standing Orders and the attempt to suspend Senator Kabiru Marafa (APC, Zamfara Central) over his utterances.

8. ‘Forging’ of Senate Standing Order: In July, the Senate was enmeshed in “forgery” scandal. It was alleged that its standing orders used for the conduct of the election that brought in Saraki and Ekweremadu as presiding officers was forged. To this effect, the outgoing Clerk to the National Assembly, Salisu Maikasuwa and others were grilled by the police. The police high authorities have since concluded their investigation and confirmed that the document was truly forged.

9. Emergence of Saraki: The emergence of Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki (APC, Kwara Central), as the Senate President on June 9, 2015, in what was described as an “apparent disregard” to the directive of the All Progressives Congress (APC), laid the foundation of flaws that has enveloped the upper chamber. Saraki, a former governor of Kwara State, edged out Senator Ahmad Lawan (APC, Yobe North), the preferred candidate of the APC to clinch the Senate’s plum job, after allegedly resting on the strength of senators of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP). The alliance apparently paved the way for the emergence of Senator Ike Ekweremadu, (PDP, Enugu West), as the Deputy Senate President, a development that dealt a serious blow to the APC’s control of the upper chamber. The Senate President is currently facing trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal over false declaration of assets.

CrimeNDLEA Arrests 156 Drug Offenders In Anambra by rommyth(op): 6:47am On Jun 25, 2016
The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in Anambra State said it had arrested no fewer than 156 drug offenders in the state between January and May this year.

The NDLEA Commander in the state, Mr. Sule Momodu, disclosed this to Southern City News on Thursday in his office.

Momodu added that those arrested were 146 males and 10 females, adding that 65 out of the arrested suspects had been charged to court.

He said the agency had seized drugs weighing 923kg and three vehicles within the period under review.

The NDLEA boss commended Governor Willie Obiano for assisting the agency, saying the governor’s aid has propelled the NDLEA to accomplish a number of feats.

Momodu, however, regretted that lack of vehicles had continued to limit the agency’s operations.

He lamented the continued increase in cases of drug abuse and trafficking in the state, especially among the young ones.

He blamed parents for the involvement of youths in drug abuse, noting that most parents don’t pay attention to their children to understand their worries, desires, aspirations and ambitions.

“If we listen to them and understand their problems and worries as they grow, we will be better able to identify their problems early enough before they go out of hand,” Momodu said.

He said in this year’s drug awareness day coming up on Sunday (tomorrow), the agency would create awareness on the prevalence of drug trafficking, dangers and the way out.

He urged parents, government and cooperate bodies to join hands in checking drug abuse among youths. http://www.punchng.com/ndlea-arrests-156-drug-offenders-anambra/
PoliticsFayose's Men Hide As EFCC Storms Ekiti by rommyth(op): 9:50am On Jun 23, 2016
https://thenationonlineng.net/wp-content/uploads/2016/05/Ekiti-State-Governor-Ayodele-Fayose-360x225-300x225-300x150.jpg

Detectives were yesterday in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, to arrest some suspects in the N4.7billion arms cash probe.
But the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) men found nobody. Their targets were said to have gone into hiding in the palatial Oke Ayoba Government House.
“They are all holed up in the place but they can’t hide forever,” an EFCC source said last night.
But Fayose threatened to name others involved in the transfer of money into his account “if they cannot stand by what they did because of the threat from the EFCC.
He accused Zenith Bank of succumbing to intimidation. But, according to a source, the bank reported the “suspicious transactions” of N4.745billion by Fayose’s associate, Abiodun Agbele, to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU).
An EFCC source, who pleaded not to be named, said Zenith Bank reported the N1.219billion suspicious transactions by Musiliu Obanikoro and Agbele to the NFIU.
“We have been on this case for a while. From the facts available, Zenith Bank reported the transactions to NFIU,” the source added.
“We have intelligence report that some of these people wanted in connection with the ongoing investigation have been moved to the Government House in Ado-Ekiti.”
On the reaction of Fayose to the EFCC fact-sheet, the source said: “We have nothing to react to at all because we have put the incontrovertible facts in the public domain.
“Let Fayose go and defend himself. We will not take up issues with him any longer. And having shifted his defence to Zenith Bank, it is the duty of the media to hear from the bank.”
The EFCC has traced about N4.75 billion of the diverted $2.1 billion arms cash to Fayose and former Minister of State (Defence) Musiliu Obanikoro. Fayose accused his bankers of succumbing to what he called “EFCC intimidation” in a bid to nail him (Fayose).
He claimed that the electoral expenses for his 2014 Ekiti poll victory were funded by Zenith Bank Plc, fundraising, donations from friends and associates as well as sales of campaign souvenirs.
Fayose said: “I have no financial transaction whatsoever with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) under Col. Sambo Dasuki (rtd) and former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro either by cash, cheque or electronic transfer.”
In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, Fayose challenged the EFCC to publish statements made by Obanikoro, his son or any other person associated with money from the NSA office where they claimed they gave him money for the election.
He accused the EFCC of “acting a movie scripted, produced and directed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) government of President Muhammadu Buhari just to silence me being a major opposition voice in the country.”
Fayose challenged the EFCC to beam its searchlight on the funding of the APC election campaign, alleging that an oil giant donated $60 million to the campaign of the then opposition party.
On how he came about the funds for his election, Fayose alleged that he was invited by the management of Zenith Bank, which he claimed nominated an officer to manage the account.
The governor said: “The management of Zenith Bank, which majorly funded my election, called me to a meeting where I was assured that fund will be provided for my election. I was asked to nominate a trusted ally to be related with and I nominated Mr Abiodun Agbele.
“All the payments into Abiodun Agbele’s account domiciled in Zenith Bank were directly from Zenith Bank. In actual fact, the account was opened by Zenith Bank hurriedly at that time and Abiodun Agbele’s identity card which ought to have been collected before the account was opened was only collected last week in the bank’s desperation to perfect the account, obviously after submitting to the intimidation and harassment of the EFCC.
“Most of the funds posted into Agbele’s account were through the Ibadan, Akure and Lagos branches of the Zenith Bank and, sometimes, they brought cash.
“Assuming but not conceding that cash moved from Lagos to Akure as being claimed by the EFCC in its usual manner of media trial, was meant for my election in Ekiti, why was the cash not moved to Ado-Ekiti branch of Zenith Bank or the cash handed to me directly?
“Why was it deposited into Zenith Bank, Akure and did the bank make any report on the transaction to the appropriate authorities? Why did the bank send its bullion van to move the money from Akure Airport to their Akure branch if it was illegal money?
“I must say it categorically that I don’t have any link financially with Obanikoro and I know as a fact that he (Obanikoro) has not; and cannot mention my name, as a beneficiary of whatever money, any company in which he has interest could have gotten from the ONSA if truly Obanikoro collected money from the ONSA as being claimed by the EFCC.
“Therefore, bringing Obanikoro and his son’s narrative or that the Zenith Bank is telling different stories, having been blackmailed and coerced into submission by the EFCC is a joke that will not fly.
“I wish to state further that if it becomes evidently clear that those who willingly provided money for my election can no longer stand by what they did, maybe because of threat from the EFCC, I will not hesitate to name names.”
Challenging the EFCC to also beam its searchlights on the funding of APC elections, especially that of President Buhari, Fayose said; “Since we are now in the era in which financial assistance from Nigerians to fund elections is being criminalised, the international community, especially those funding EFCC must insist that the commission probes the funding of APC elections before further funds are released to the commission.
“Most importantly, Nigerians are interested in the $60 million allegedly donated to the APC campaign by Sahara Energy, on which EFCC has been forced to suspend investigation.”
He said it was obvious that he had become the main headache of President Buhari’s administration, adding that “what they are doing now is part of their grand plot to intimidate and harass me into submission but I am not someone that can’t be cowed by threats of incarceration and death.
“I advise that they should keep their gun powder dry and wait till the end of my tenure in 2018 and I want to assure them that I will be available to answer any of their questions, no matter how unreasonable.
“Furthermore, Nigerians should know that I have been persecuted by the EFCC before, using phantom N1.2 billion poultry scam and I came out victorious. I was not only acquitted, I got N10 million judgment against the EFCC and my impeachment that was orchestrated by the EFCC was quashed by the Supreme Court.
“Nigerians should recall that it was part of this plot to get back at me because of my critical stance on Buhari’s government that the Ekiti State House of Assembly was invaded by men of the Department of State Service (DSS), placement of travel ban on me and, lately, illegal freezing of my account by the EFCC.
“I therefore make bold to state that in the overall interest of democracy and well-being of Nigerians, I will continue to speak my mind on issues bordering on governance in Nigeria. I cannot be intimidated!”

PoliticsOpinion: Why Sensible Igbos Must Speak Against Biafra Read More: Https://www.nai by rommyth(op): 9:20am On Jun 16, 2016
Editor’s note: A lot of Igbos have been championing the agitation for an independent Biafra state and the agitation seems to have increased since Goodluck Jonathan lost the presidential election. In this opinion, Joe Igbokwe argues that Igbos are being fooled into believing that Biafra is the solution to their problem and blindly following those calling for secession when they have no idea what the Biafra war was like Silence is something not golden Let me start by appreciating Mr. Churchill Okonkwo for this thought-provoking piece. I have read the piece like this from wonderful Igbo like Prof Ozodi Osuji, Peter Claver, Chike Okonkwo, SKC Ogbonna, CDon Adinuba, Zara Gift Onyinye, Geo Uguru, etc who see what other Igbo cannot see. Churchill Okonkwo has in this piece taken the debate further on what Igbo is losing by the hate they preach every day and the rude celebration of ethnic bigotry at a time like this. I cannot thank Churchill Okonkwo enough for this courageous exposition when men who should know better are shamelessly and cowardly maintaining a grave silence. They know the truth but cannot speak.
When a writer is silent he is lying. Churchill, I join you to raise my hands for the world to see where I stand at a time like this. Real men take a stand in the days of trouble. Twenty-one years ago, I wrote my first Book, Igbos: 25 YEARS AFTER BIAFRA. In that book I wrote that it is true that Igbo have been marginalized in every sector in Nigeria be it at the Federal level, State, Local Government, Army, Navy, Airforce, Police, House of Reps, Senate, and even in Revenue allocations, Appointments, Infrastructure distribution, National institutions, etc. I acknowledged the fact that even as painful as it is our people marginalize themselves even further without knowing it. Learning from history I had thought that 46 years after the Nigeria-Biafra Civil War, Igbo would have been matured enough to throw persecution complex, leadership complex and defeatism attitude into the dustbin of history knowing fully well that the victors of that Civil War are really not better than Igbo today in Nigeria, everything considered. I have even justified this claim from the world-class research conducted by The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council “that all forms of indignity against human lives, against human persons, debase the perpetrators more than the victims.Today Igbo are at it again just like what took place before pogrom in 1966. Immediately after the 16years struggle for democracy ended in 1999, a coward and lily-livered Igbo clown called Ralph Uwazurike who could not raise a voice against IBB or Abacha in the days of the locust began to call for the State of Biafra.
He was ignored because it was seen as a business venture to raise money for himself and his family. Soon it became a big business for carpenters and bricklayers. Soon suspicion came in, and the center could no longer hold. The rest is now history. Before the 2015 elections, I warned Igbo that a President Jonathan will not fly in 2015 given the obvious and painful fact that Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani have formed an alliance which left South East and South-South to a miserable minority. Igbo did not listen because they believed so much in the power of incumbency. When it became obvious that Card Readers and PVCs will be deployed to checkmate rigging and falsification of results, Jonathan’s handlers bribed OPC and MASSOB to stage a protest against Prof. Jega in Lagos, Umuahia, Anambra, and Abia. The rest is not history. TAN had planned to give Jonathan 25 million votes by all means possible. Soon we began to hear of one funny character called Nnamdi Kanu of IPOB, abusing other Nigerians and calling Nigeria a zoo. It soon became another huge business as this unknown, untrained and gullible boy flew First Class to travel all over the world preaching hate and ethnic bigotry, deceiving gullible Nigerians like him in diaspora, including economic refugees and cultural savages. Like every other business, the lowest of the low in Igboland keyed into his useless and brainless project. Anger across Igboland due to Jonathan’s failure to clinch the presidency grew like wildfire and our people found solace in Kanu’s brigandage. The Biafra cry today Today we hear Biafra, Biafra on the internet; we hear it in Igboland, but one thing is certain; we have to debate this one. We did not discuss the 1966 to 1970 Biafra and the 1967 to 1970 Civil War, and we all know the consequences. Now the Biafra of 2016 will be hotly debated, every option weighed, every ‘i’ dotted and every ‘t’ crossed.
The self-evident truth is that I have 25 reasons why Biafra cannot stand in Nigeria again. But will my people listen to me? Did they read Churchill Okonkwo’s hot potato? Did Kanu witness the Civil War? Where did they tell the stories? Did they see the pictures? Do they know the Igbo investment in Nigeria? Do they know that Biafra is too small for Igbo enterprise? Do they know about the ethnic war in Rwanda? Do they know about the state of South-Sudan Republic? Do they know about our children flown to Gabon and other places that never returned? Do they know anything? I can go on and on.
A bright Igbo son Prof Ozodi Osuji has described Igbo mentality these days as one saddled with a childish sense of superiority and paranoid grandiosity, but we can do better than this. Igbo are not the best God ever created in Nigeria. Every ethnic group in Nigeria has its champions and stars. The North of Hausa-Fulani feeds the South. This is huge power, SIMPLICITA. The people of Southern Nigeria have their own prodigious power too. This is the power of diversity. My take is that sensible Igbo in Nigeria must begin to speak out like Churchill Okonkwo and others. They are the real thinkers in Igboland who see what other Igbo cannot see. Let the real debate start and let all the sides be heard loud and clear. I throw my hat into the ring, and I am ready to go the whole hog. Let the real men stand up so that charlatans, crooks and biafrauds will disappear.

PoliticsFacts About June 12 by rommyth(op): 12:16pm On Jun 12, 2016
June 12, 1993 to this moment seem just like yesterday, but it is not just another calendar day in Nigeria; because in progressive ideological circles, today is regarded as the authentic ‘Democracy Day’ as against the ‘May 29′ popularly celebrated by the federal government.
Here are twelve important facts you need to know about this date.
1. The date is celebrated in honour of an annulled presidential election in June 12, 1993. Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola, often referred to as M. K. O. Abiola, ran for the presidency in 1993, and is widely regarded as the presumed winner of the inconclusive election since no official final results were announced till date.
2. The election was annulled by Ibrahim Babangida, because of alleged evidence that they were corrupt and unfair, a development that ushered in a political crisis that led to General Sani Abacha seizing power later that year.
3. In 1994, Abiola declared himself the lawful president of Nigeria in the Epetedo area of Lagos island, an area mainly dominated by Lagos Indigenes, after he returned from a trip to solicit the support of the international community for his mandate. After declaring himself president he was declared wanted and was accused of treason and arrested on the orders of military President General Sani Abacha, who sent 200 police vehicles to bring him into custody.
4. Moshood Abiola was detained for four years, largely in solitary confinement with a Bible, Qur’an, and fourteen guards as companions.
5. Nigerian Pastor T.B. Joshua is said to have predicted the annulment to Abiola and warned him against contesting.
6. Abiola’s involvement in politics started at a young age. He was 19-years-old when he joined the National Council of Nigeria and the Cameroons (NCNC) in 1979.
7. For the June 12, 1993 presidential elections, Abiola’s running mate was Baba Gana Kingibe. He overwhelmingly defeated his rival, Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention.
8. Abiola died on July 7, 1998 on the day he was due to be released from incarceration under suspicious circumstances shortly after the death of General Abacha. The official autopsy stated that Abiola died of natural causes, but Abacha’s chief security officer, Al-Mustapha alleged he was beaten to death.
9. MKO Abiola used a ‘Hope’ campaign which President Barrack Obama also used.
Many people may have paid attention to the word ‘Hope’ being used to convey a message of possibility during Obama’s 2008 election in America, but 15 years before then in Africa’s most populous nation, MKO Abiola became a rallying figure for many Nigerians with his ‘Hope’ campaign.
10. MKO Abiola died for the June 12 mandate but he was not the only June 12 casualty as General Sani Abacha also died in mysterious circumstances on June 8, 1998.
11. Chief MKO Abiola’s memory is celebrated in Nigeria and internationally. MKO Abiola Stadium was named in his honour.
12. The election was declared Nigeria’s freest and fairest presidential election by national and international observers, with Abiola even winning in his Northern opponent’s home state. June 12 is thus a day to remember chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale Abiola as well as other democracy martyrs. https://www.nigerianbulletin.com/threads/june-12-m-k-o-abiola-12-facts-you-need-to-know-about-the-date-and-the-man.214281/

FUTO Presently Nation’s 8th Best University’

The Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the 10th governing council of the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO) Dr. Emmanuel Enemuo has commended the out going Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof. Cyril Asiabaka for placing the Institution to an enviable height of excellence during his tenure.

According to Enemuo, the institution which is the nation’s premier University Of Technology established in 1980 by former President Shehu Shagari’s administration is now the 8th in the ranking of Universities in the country by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as against its former 48th position.

This, he said, has given credence to the mantra of the institution, which is quest for excellence.

Enemuo stated this at a valedictory colloquium in honour of Asiabaka whose tenure expires this month as the 6th substantive Vice Chancellor of the university.

Prof. Asiabaka who took over the mantle of leadership of the University from the late Prof. Celestine Onwuliri in 2011 and is expected to hand over to the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Francis Chukwuemeka Eze.

“Prof. Asiabaka has brought about monumental physical development and infrastructure into FUTO and the University Is now being governed with strict sense of discipline, there are no more examination malpractices, selling of handouts, sexual harassment and cultism is now a thing of the past in FUTO.”

Enemuo however attributed the modest achievement of the out going Vice Chancellor to the unflinching support and cooperation of the members of the University Governing Council and enjoined them to extend same to the incoming Vice Chancellor.

When I read some comments, I shake head for our youths. The minister simply said #14,000 has been the budget for each prisoner. It has been like dat for long,it's not his making. Wether the quality of the food worth it is anoda tin. Dats part of the corruption we are talking about. The minister was trying to safe part of the money for other tins. He never said anything bad biko!

Jonathan Was Not Interested In Saving Nigeria’s Resources – Okonjo-Iweala
BY TORDUE SALEM
— Apr 15, 2016 3:29 am | Leave a comment
Former Minister of Finance, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, yesterday said that her former boss, former President Goodluck Jonathan was not interested in saving Nigeria’s huge earnings from oil and other sources between 2011 and 2015.

She said the absence of political will to save under former President Goodluck Jonathan is responsible for the hardship facing the country currently.

Speaking on “inequality, growth and resilience,” at George Washington University, the former minister said the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) must seek means to embed savings in national constitutions devoid of political manipulations.

Okonjo-Iweala added that Nigeria was able to save $22 billion under former President Olusegun Obasanjo, which saved the country in 2008, from global economic meltdown.

Speaking on the Chilean saving example, Okonjo-Iweala said: “We tried it in Nigeria, we put in an oil price based fiscal rule in 2004 and it worked very well.

“We saved $22 billion because the political will to do it was there. And when the 2008 /2009 crisis came, we were able to draw on those savings precisely to issue about a 5 per cent of GDP fiscal stimulus to the economy and we never had to come to the bank or the fund.

“This time around and this is the key now, you need not only to have the instrument but you also need the political will. In my second time as a finance minister, from 2011 to 2015, we had the instrument, we had the means, we had done it before, but zero political will.

“So we were not able to save when we should have. That is why you find that Nigeria is now in the situation it is in. Along with so many other countries.”

800 B’Haram members surrender – DHQ
April 7, 2016

Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar

Fidelis Soriwei, Abuja

The Defence authorities have said that not less than 800 members of the dreaded Boko Haram sect had surrendered to the military in the last three weeks.

The Acting Director, Defence Information, Brig. Gen. Rabe Abubakar, confirmed to our correspondent in Abuja on Wednesday that 800 of the insurgents surrendered to the troops of the Nigerian Army in the last three weeks.

He said, “I can confirm that about 800 of the Boko Haram members have surrendered to the military.”

Abubakar spoke barely 24 hours after the Defence Headquarters announced the establishment of a rehabilitation camp for repentant Boko Haram members.

Abubakar had said in a statement on Tuesday that the rehabilitation camp was being established under Operation Safe Corridor which was created as a platform to rehabilitate and integrate repentant members of the sect to the society.

He had said that the insurgents would be made to go through vocational training under the programme and empowered for reintegration into the society.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Army  said on Wednesday that it had rescued 11,595 captives of the Boko Haram insurgents in the North-East in the last one month.

The Acting Director, Army Public Relations, Col. Sani Usman, said in a statement on Wednesday that some of the hostages were rescued from the communities erstwhile under Boko Haram control in the North-East while others were received from Cameroon.

He stated that out of the figure, the troops of the 155 Task Force Battalion received 10,000 refugees from the Cameroonian authorities at Banki and the Bama area on March 1,2916.

Usman said that the Army Headquarters Special Forces Battalion rescued 779 captives at Fotokol general area between Nigeria and Cameroon in addition to 63 others freed from  Boko Haram at Maleri, Borno  State.

He added that the troops  of the 254 Task Force Battalion also rescued 45 persons at Kuaguru, while 143 Battalion similarly rescued 27 persons at Gadayamo,15 at Galadadani Dam in Madagali and 10 persons from Disa village in the first week March, 2016.

The Acting Army spokesman added  that troops of the 22 Brigade and their counterparts from the Army Headquarters Strike Group freed 309 hostages from the Boko Haram at the Kala Balge general area on March 23, 2016.

According to him, similar efforts yielded results with the rescue of 48 men, 85 women, 137 children at Zahdra and Weige villages by troops of the 25 Task Force Brigade on March 30,2016.
