Computers / Robotics Firm’s Lasers Reveal Ocean’s Deepest Secrets by ronaldfraizer56: 12:04am On Nov 04, 2016
For Jason Gillham, a lifelong fascination with underwater exploration reached its apex a couple of months ago.

Aboard an exploratory boat in the Atlantic Ocean, Mr. Gillham was there when marine archaeologist Joe Hoyt and the pilot of a two-person submersible became the first people to set eyes upon a Second World War German U-boat since it sank 74 years ago.

“With my passion being the underwater exploration side of things, any time we can get involved with these kinds of cool projects – the shipwreck projects – that’s amazing,” he says.

It was that passion that led him to found Waterloo, Ont.-based 2G Robotics Inc. in 2007 to further underwater exploration through the use of laser scanners that allow for the creation of 3-D renderings of boats and other watercraft.

The laser data give accurate geometric points of an object, so the models built from the scanning process give more than just a picture but also allow for measurements and quantifiable information for a greater understanding of the object, Mr. Gillham, the company’s chief executive officer, adds.

“Laser scanning is becoming the standard for high precision underwater work,” he says.

In the case of the U-boat, the battlefield off the coast of North Carolina was discovered just a couple of years ago. The final resting place of the German submarine and a nearby freighter, the S.S. Bluefields that was sunk by the Germans, was 210 metres deep. Given that the deepest recreational divers can go is about 100 metres, 2G Robotics’ lasers, with a limit of about four kilometres, allow for exploration of some of the ocean’s more off-limits places.

With the collected data, the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which originally discovered the battlefield, can now find out what happened all those years ago.

“They’ll be able to start analyzing the footage, the video and imagery that was collected by a variety of systems, including ours, to start answering the questions that are unknown on this boat,” Mr. Gillham says. “Exactly what sunk that U-boat?”

Though situations like German U-boats are more the exception than the norm, Mr. Gillham explains that customers generally come to him with one of three different problems.

The first is they want to perform recurring inspections on something like a pipeline, for instance.

The second occurs during construction of a pipeline and when it comes to connecting two pieces of pipe together: 2G Robotics can use its laser technology to measure the distance between the two separate pieces to accurately determine the dimensions of a connecting piece.

The third is when there is known damage, and 2G Robotics can assess the extent of the destruction. That was the case when the company helped out with righting the Italian cruise ship the Costa Concordia, which ran aground off the coast of Italy in 2012.

“We need to model it so we can then understand what the next correct action is,” Mr. Gillham says.

In the case of the Costa Concordia, 2G Robotics was originally brought on board to help design some stands inside of the bowel thrusters of the boat to help with the righting of the vessel. But then the company also helped map the damaged side of the ship in order to figure out how best to attach the floats to raise it.

Mr. Gillham says his company, which employs about 15 people, started to get its technology to market about six years ago. Despite the downturn in the oil and gas industries – both heavy users of his technology – the business has grown 50 per cent year over year since 2010, he says, partly because customers in those markets are using his technology to look for ways to save time and money.

Revenues for 2G Robotics are currently in the “multimillions,” with Mr. Gillham estimating that his company is in the top three of its industry globally.

The company has also had its technology used on all seven continents, says Mr. Gillham, who is originally from Collingwood, Ont. Part of that growth has been due to partnerships the company has struck with overseas distributors to represent its brand in new markets.

“We really rely on partners that have great local connections so they open the doors for us,” he says.

Managing the day-to-day running of a business and all that it entails is very much a departure for a former competitive skier who completed his MBA in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo. However, Mr. Gillham has had to learn the ropes as he goes along, doing a part-time MBA at Wilfrid Laurier University to get his head around all aspects of running the business, from human resources and project management to motivating staff and business structure.

However, a lot of his experience has come from reading books on his own time.

“That need for self-learning has been a substantial part, and without it we wouldn’t have been successful,” he says.

Phones / Best Phones Of 2016 by ronaldfraizer56: 1:21am On Nov 03, 2016
1, Google Pixel

Pure Android at its absolute best

If you're wary of Samsung or looking for a worthy iPhone alternative, the Google Pixel is the high-end Android phone to get. With the Pixel, Google stepped up to bat, called its shot and knocked it out of the park. And the timing couldn't be more fortunate with Samsung in the midst of an explosive crisis.

After six years of partnering up with device makers to create its Nexus phones, for the first time Google has stepped out on its own. The Pixel and Pixel XL are the latest additions to its line of in-house products. And while HTC may have put the phones together, it was Google that designed, engineered and branded them.

Computers / Seagate Releases External SSD With External Xbox Logo by ronaldfraizer56: 8:26pm On Nov 02, 2016
Unlike the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One doesn’t let you swap out the hard drive if you want to boost your storage. It does, however, let you attach an external drive, which you may consider more or less convenient depending on your respective feelings about screwdrivers and tidy home entertainment centers.

In any case, Seagate wants to make the most of the situation by releasing a drive designed for the Xbox. The Game Drive for Xbox SSD is a 512GB solid-state drive that should offer faster install and load performance than the Xbox’s stock 5400rpm hard drive, while coming in a black-and-green enclosure complete with an Xbox logo.

Here’s the thinking: if you must have an unwieldy hard drive plugged into USB, it might as well match your console. You’ll pay for that privilege, though — the Game Drive will cost $199.99 when it hits stores this month, and it’s pretty easy to find comparable SSDs for around two-thirds the price.

Health / Wireless Smartphone Ultrasound Scanner A Safe Alternative To X-ray For Lung Scan by ronaldfraizer56: 1:59pm On Oct 31, 2016
Clarius Mobile Health, a digital healthcare startup, will demonstrate its ultra-portable smartphone ultrasound scanners at the CHEST 2016 conference in Los Angeles this week. Clarius Mobile Health’s user-friendly wireless scanners pair with iOS and Android devices for point-of-care assessments including chest diseases.

“Lung ultrasound has been shown in different studies to be a better test for numerous types of lung pathologies than a chest x-ray and sometimes even better than a CT scan,” said Dr. Shane Arishenkoff, an internal medicine physician in Vancouver, BC. “It gives me the ability to get real-time patient information rather than waiting for results. After initiating treatment, I can go back to the patient to see if my therapies are helping.”

Wireless and compatible with most iOS and Android smartphones and tablets available today, Clarius ultrasound scanners are intended for physicians to use for quick scans at the bedside. The Clarius C3 multipurpose ultrasound scanner is designed to image the lungs and abdomen; it incorporates a virtual phased array for quick scans of the heart.

“We’re excited about showing our ultra-portable ultrasound scanner to members of the American College of Chest Physicians,” said Laurent Pelissier, Chairman and CEO of Clarius Mobile Health. “Our C3 Scanner is the ideal tool to help treat patients quickly.”

The CHEST 2016 conference is organized by the American College of Chest Physicians, which promotes the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of chest diseases. The organization’s 18,700 multidisciplinary members are involved with pulmonary, critical care, and sleep medicine.

“Unlike many new ultrasound machines, Clarius is ideal for lung scanning because it uses a unique imaging technology that provides excellent imaging, yet does not eliminate the artifacts that we need to scan the lung,” said Dr. Arishenkoff. “It’s also great not to have to deal with wires and cords.”

Clarius Scanners are water-resistant for easy cleaning and sterilization. They are powered by a rechargeable battery and built with a magnesium case. Clarius is ISO Certified and has met all safety requirements. The company has filed for regulatory clearance in various regions and expects to be ready to sell products by the end of 2016.

Computers / Inaudible Soundwaves Expose A Spooky New Pathway For Hackers by ronaldfraizer56: 10:40pm On Oct 30, 2016
In a presentation scheduled for this week’s Black Hat conference in London, security researchers from University College London will outline how new marketing software that uses ultrasound signals could also expose millions of devices to malicious hacking.

The underlying technology in question is known as ultrasonic cross-device tracking, or uXDT. Cross-device tracking has been called a ‘holy grail’ for marketers, allowing them to, for instance, tell your phone when you’re watching a particular TV show, or share data about laptop web browsing to your tablet. A variety of startups and services, including Korea’s Soundlly and the rewards app Shopkick, are developing or using versions of the technology.... Phones / Apple Refuses To Refund Customer Unless He Proves He Is Not Saddam Hussein by ronaldfraizer56: 10:34pm On Oct 30, 2016
Apple has apologized to a customer they refused to give a refund to unless he could prove he was not Saddam Hussein.

Sharakat Hussain, a 26-year-old from Birmingham, bought a £799 iPhone 7 for his sister but decided to return it a month later.

He was told he’d receive a refund but, instead, a few weeks later he recieved an email asking him to prove he was not the deceased Iraqi dictator.

“I thought the email was spam, I was stunned to learn it was real. I was furious to be linked to Saddam,” Mr Hussain told The Sun.

Mr Hussain, who works as a driver, was informed that due to his surname he was on a Government’s Denied Parties list – which means he wasn’t allowed to be sold an iPhone.

Computers / Beginning Of Dark Era For Cyber Security by ronaldfraizer56: 5:46pm On Oct 29, 2016
It may be old news to most of us, but researchers and experts are still sifting through the data on last week’s staggering distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

For those few who haven’t heard, someone launched a massive DDoS attack on a domain name server (DNS) last Friday. This is important because DNS are responsible for translating the web addresses we humans use (like www.geek.com) into data that computers and routers and the like can understand.

When a DNS goes down, computers get confused and have no idea where to go unless you manually type in the address of the site you need. Since basically ... read on at http://etech9ja..com.ng/2016/10/beginning-of-dark-era-for-cyber-security.html

Computers / Launch Windows Computer Without Entering The Password by ronaldfraizer56: 5:31pm On Oct 29, 2016
Yes, we know. Having to enter your Windows password each time you boot up can be a hassle. You have to carefully type it in a field where by default it appears as a series of asterisk characters. So if you're in a hurry, you can easily mistype it (more than once), and that gets annoying.

You may even have your copy of Windows set to require the password any time your PC needs to wake up from sleep mode. So the more often your PC falls asleep, the more you have to key in that password.

Obviously, the main purpose of the password is to protect your PC from prying eyes. If you work in an office or other location with people milling about, you'll want to password-protect Windows so no one can peek at your documents, files, and other information. But if you work alone and aren't worried about other people accessing your PC, you can disable the Windows sign-in process........ Phones / Yes, Your 32GB Iphone 7's Storage Is Slower by ronaldfraizer56: 4:28pm On Oct 22, 2016
So you decided to save money and get the 32GB version of the iPhone 7 (instead of 128GB or that 256GB monster) and now you're wondering if you're on the short end of the performance stick. Well, technically, you are.

Lower-capacity storage chips tend to perform slightly slower than higher-capacity ones. It has to do with the number of parallel channels you can put inside solid-state storage devices (SSD) -- the type used in all mobile devices, including iPhones. Higher capacities can have more channels...

Phones / How To Delete Default Apps On Iphone, Ipad With Ios 10 by ronaldfraizer56: 9:25am On Oct 21, 2016
You can now delete defaults apps from any iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch running iOS 10. Yes this means you can delete Mail, delete Music, Stocks, Maps, Calendar, Watch, iTunes Store, Compass, Reminders, Videos, iBooks, Podcasts, Find Friends, Watch, Tips, Voice Memos, News, Activity, and any other of the pre bundled default iOS apps that arrive on iPhone and iPad, all of them can be removed easily.

Any default app that has been removed can be reinstalled at any time, so if you decide it was a mistake to delete a specific app it’s easy to get back again. You’ll find that deleting a default app is basically the same as uninstalling other apps on the iPhone and iPad, except that up until now you could not delete the default apps, they were simply not removable.

1. Locate the default app you want to delete from the iPhone or iPad

2. Tap and hold on the app icon to cause them to jiggle and make the (X) delete button appear, tap on that (X) to delete the default app

3. Confirm that you want to delete the app by choosing “Remove”

4. Repeat with other default apps you want to delete in iOS

Deleted default apps will disappear from the devices Home Screen and remain inaccessible to the device unless they are reinstalled again.

In the example here we deleted the bundled default “Music” app from iOS on an iPhone.

The ability to delete default apps is really quite handy and it lets you cut down on some of the cruft that comes along with iOS which may go unused by some users. This feature to ditch stock apps though is only available in the most modern versions of iOS, so if your iPhone or iPad is running an older version of iOS system software you would need to update it to iOS 10 (or later if you) and try again to gain access to the deleting default apps ability.

Note that some default apps can not be removed from iOS. Some of the undeletable apps include Settings, Messages, Phone, Safari, Clock, Photos, Health, App Store, and Camera. If you don’t want those apps, you’ll need to hide them in a folder or on another home screen.

Even after a stock app has been deleted from the iPhone or iPad, they can be reinstalled again at anytime by going through the App Store, searching for the app in question, and choosing to re-download it again.

Phones / Apple Says Most Of Its 'genuine' Chargers On Amazon Are Fakes by ronaldfraizer56: 4:58pm On Oct 20, 2016
Apple has filed a lawsuit against a company, accusing it of selling fake power adapters packaged as the real thing on Amazon.

The tech giant sued Mobile Star in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California on Monday, accusing Mobile Star of selling power chargers and adapters on Amazon.com under the Apple banner.

Apple said in the lawsuit, which was obtained by Apple-tracking site Patently Apple, that so far this year, it’s bought more than 100 products sold on Amazon that carry the “Apple” branding. Computers / New Macbook Pro Without Standard USB Ports To Be Launched By Apple Next Week by ronaldfraizer56: 4:23pm On Oct 20, 2016
Apple is preparing to launch new Mac computers next week, but may controversially ditch the traditional USB port.

The long-awaited refresh to the company’s suite of computers, including the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air and iMac, will be unveiled on Thursday October 27, the technology website Recode reported.

The event is reportedly set to be held at Apple’s Cupertino headquarters, rather than the San Francisco auditoriums it traditionally holds iPhone launches at, suggesting it may be a more low-key event.

However, interest is still likely to be high. Apple has not significantly updated the MacBook Pro for over four years, and rumours suggest the new model may include intriguing features such as a touchscreen display at the top of the keyboard instead of the standard function keys.

The screen’s “virtual keys” would change depending on what program is being used – music controls in iTunes, but editing functions when word processing, for example.

It may also do away with the traditional USB port in favour of USB-C, a newer standard that does not support standard “USB-A” cables or sticks. The USB-C port, pictured above, is smaller and more rounded than the traditional socket.

While it is not the first time Apple has done this – last year’s 12-inch MacBook had just the one USB-C port for charging and connections – getting rid of traditional USB on the more workmanlike MacBook Pro may prove unpopular.

According to Macotakara, a Japanese website with a strong track record on Apple products, the new MacBook Pro will feature two ports – USB-C and Apple’s own Thunderbolt port.

It is likely that the laptop would charge via USB, making the only available port while plugged in the Thunderbolt.

Apple is also reportedly set to unveil a new 13-inch MacBook Air that will follow in killing the traditional USB port, making the standard redundant on its computers.

Despite the slow rise of USB-C, the standard USB port is still widely used, including on Apple’s own chargers for its iPhones and iPads, and while customers can buy adapters that convert USB-C to standard USB, or allow for multiple ports, it is likely to prove controversial.

Phones / Airlines Are Putting Fire-resistant Bags On Board To Fight Combusting Phones by ronaldfraizer56: 9:21am On Oct 15, 2016
Battery fires continue to vex airlines, even after Samsung scrapped production of its exploding Galaxy Note 7.

Some carriers are putting up a new line of defense against burning mobile devices: bright red fire-containment bags that can withstand temperatures of 3,200 degrees Fahrenheit (1760 degrees Celsius).

In a call with investors this week, Delta Air Lines said it would add fire-resistant bags to its fleet. Delta CEO Ed Bastian specified that the bags were fully capable of containing lithium-battery fires.

Since September, the US Federal Aviation Administration and several airlines have been instructing passengers not to turn on, charge or pack in checked luggage the doomed Samsung smartphone model.

On Friday, the US Department of Transportation issued an emergency ban of any Galaxy Note7 phones on all air transport, including cargo.

But smartphone bans are nearly impossible to enforce because so many devices look so similar. Even after the Note 7 was recalled, a replacement Samsung Galaxy Note 7 started smoking on a Southwest Airlines flight earlier this month.

Delta has more than 900 aircraft, all of which will eventually get the bags. The first bags will go to 166 planes used on transoceanic routes and some Boeing 757s used for domestic service, the airline told The Associated Press. The rest of the fleet will be equipped next year, the airline said.

Alaska Airlines and Virgin America have also added fire-containment bags to their fleets, the AP said.

The FAA reported 23 incidents of smoke, fire, explosion or extreme heat from lithium ion batteries or unknown types through Sept. 7 in airplanes or airports. That’s up from just 16 in all of 2015 and nine in 2014, so on-board fire-containment bags may soon become as common as seatbelts.
