Crime / Ansaru, Leader Of Al-qaeda-linked Group Arrested In Lokoja Nigeria by rotexii001(m): 1:23pm On Apr 04, 2016 |
The leader of al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group Ansaru has been arrested in Nigeria, authorities there say. A military spokesman said Khalid al-Barnawi was captured in Lokoja, capital of the central state of Kogi. The US had placed a $5m (£3.5m) bounty on his head after branding him one of three Nigerian “specially designated global terrorists” in 2012. Ansaru is a splinter group of Nigeria’s largest jihadist group, Boko Haram, known for kidnapping foreigners. Ideologically aligned to al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, it is also accused of killing a number of Westerners. Ansaru said it carried out an attack on a maximum security prison in the Nigerian capital Abuja in 2012, freeing dozens of inmates. “Security agents made a breakthrough on Friday in the fight against terrorism by arresting Khalid al-Barnawi, the leader of Ansaru terrorist group in Lokoja,” military spokesman Brigadier General Rabe Abubakar said. “He is among those on top of the list of our wanted terrorists.” READ MORE ON CRIME @ www.ghistme.com You CAN AS WELL USE GHIST-IT TO PUBLISH YOUR NEWS FOR FREE @ www.ghistme.com/ghistit |

Technology Market / How A Smartphone App Can Cure Blindness In Poor Countries. by rotexii001(m): 3:35pm On Apr 02, 2016 |
In 2012, London eye surgeon Dr. Andrew Bastawrous gave up his job and comfortable life in the capital, sold everything he and his family owned, and moved with his wife and one-year old baby to Kenya to start 100 temporary eye clinics. His idea — turning a smartphone into an eye examination tool — was already a couple years in the making. Prior travels abroad to developing countries doing eye tests propelled Bastawrous to want to help those with common vision problems but little access to eye care and health equipment. There are 39 million blind people globally, and in low-income countries, 80% of blindness is curable. The two main causes of eye problems, he notes, are cataracts and refractive errors. “The majority is reversible. People who have been blind for decades, with help, can see again,” he notes. With this concept in mind, Bastawrous and his team developed Portable Eye Examination Kit (Peek). Trialing the technology, Bastawrous’ team screened 21,000 Kenyan children in 9 days, and will now begin screening another 300,000 in Trans-Nzoia, a rural farming community in eastern Kenya. Health / 8 Things You Can Do To Prevent A Stroke by rotexii001(m): 2:16pm On Apr 02, 2016 |
Regardless of your age or family history, a stroke doesn’t have to be inevitable. Here are some ways to protect yourself starting today. This year, 425,000 women will have a stroke—55,000 more strokes than men will have. Age makes us more susceptible, as does having a mother, father, or other close relative who has had a stroke. You can’t reverse the years or change your family history, but there are many other stroke risk factors that you can control—provided that you’re aware of them. “Knowledge is power,” says Dr. Natalia Rost, associate professor of neurology at Harvard Medical School and associate director of the Acute Stroke Service at Massachusetts General Hospital. “If you know that a particular risk factor is sabotaging your health and predisposing you to a higher risk of stroke, you can take steps to alleviate the effects of that risk.” Here are eight ways to start reining in your risks today, before a stroke has the chance to strike. 1 Lower blood pressure High blood pressure is a huge factor, doubling or even quadrupling your stroke risk if it is not controlled. “High blood pressure is the biggest contributor to the risk of stroke in both men and women,” Dr. Rost says. “Monitoring blood pressure and, if it is elevated, treating it, is probably the biggest difference women can make to their vascular health.” Your goal: Maintain a blood pressure of less than 120 (top number) over less than 80 (bottom number). How to achieve it: Reduce the salt in your diet to no more than 1,500 milligrams a day (about a half teaspoon). Avoid high-cholesterol foods, such as burgers, cheese, and ice cream. Eat 4 to 5 cups of fruits and vegetables every day, fish two to three times a week, and several daily servings of whole grains and low-fat dairy. Get more exercise—at least 30 minutes of activity a day, and more, if possible. Quit smoking, if you smoke. If needed, take blood pressure medicines. 2 Lose weight Obesity, as well as the complications linked to it (including high blood pressure and diabetes), raises your odds of having a stroke. If you’re overweight, losing as little as 10 pounds can have a real impact on your stroke risk. Your goal: Keep your body mass index (BMI) at 25 or less. How to achieve it: Limit or avoid saturated and trans fats. Try to eat no more than 1,500 to 2,000 calories a day (depending on your activity level and your current body mass index). Increase the amount of exercise you do with such activities as walking, golfing, or playing tennis, and by making activity part of every single day. 3 Exercise more Exercise contributes to losing weight and lowering blood pressure, but it also stands on its own as an independent stroke reducer. One 2012 study found that women who walked three hours a week were less likely to have a stroke than women who didn’t walk. Your goal: Exercise at a moderate intensity at least five days a week. How to achieve it: Take a walk around your neighborhood every morning after breakfast. Start a fitness club with friends. When you exercise, reach the level at which you’re breathing hard, but you can still talk. Take the stairs instead of an elevator when you can. If you don’t have 30 consecutive minutes to exercise, break it up into 10- to 15-minute sessions a few times each day. 4 Drink—in moderation What you’ve heard is true. Drinking can make you less likely to have a stroke—up to a point. “Studies show that if you have about one drink per day, your risk may be lower,” according to Dr. Rost. “Once you start drinking more than two drinks per day, your risk goes up very sharply.” Your goal: Drink alcohol in moderation. How to achieve it: Have one glass of alcohol a day. Make red wine your first choice, because it contains resveratrol, which is thought to protect the heart and brain. Watch your portion sizes. A standard-sized drink is a 5-ounce glass of wine, 12-ounce beer, or 1.5-ounce glass of hard liquor. READ MORE @ http://www.ghistme.com/health-8-things-you-can-do-to-prevent-a-stroke/. Health / 10 Things You Need To Know About Death by rotexii001(m): 1:50pm On Apr 02, 2016 |
Death is part of life that we will all have to face. Sometimes the more you know about a certain subject, the less frightening it becomes. Here are 10 things you may not know about dying. 1. Dying is often a process. There are numerous causes of death, many of which are instant. These signs include slowed breathing, weakened heart rate, and a change in color, says Zachary Palace, MD, medical director of the Hebrew Home at Riverdale in New York. “In general, in the time leading up to death, usually the person will become pale because of a drop in blood pressure,” he says. “The fingers may get cold or turn blue. If you feel the pulse, it will be weak, and then they start to develop an irregular type of breathing, and that’s a sign that things are pretty ominous.” 2. When breathing slows, death is likely near. Dr. Palace explains that there may be gaps in between breaths where it looks like the person stopped breathing for 15 to 20 seconds. He says families often worry at this point, but he assures them that it’s a normal part of the dying process. 3. There are two stages of death. The first stage, known as clinical death, occurs when a person’s heart stops beating. About four to six minutes later, brain cells start to die from the loss of oxygen and biological death occurs. 4. Resuscitation may be possible during clinical death. But it’s not possible during biological death. However, doctors may be able to delay biological death by cooling the body, thus extending the window for possible resuscitation. Palace also points out that drowning victims or people in a colder environment may also delay biological death. “The colder the body is, the slower the metabolic rate,” he explains, “so you’re using oxygen up slower and that window may be longer.” 5. Hearing may be the last sense to go. Though it has not been scientifically proven, it is widely believed that hearing is the last of the senses lost before death. “It’s the most passive sense,” Palace explains. He says that when death seems imminent, “we encourage families to talk and share their last thoughts, love, and support with their loved ones because even though the blood pressure is dropping and they’re fading out, they can hear what we’re saying.” READ MORE @ http://www.ghistme.com/10-things-you-need-to-know-about-death/. Health / 7 Benefits Of Regular Physical Exercise To Health by rotexii001(m): 1:14pm On Apr 02, 2016 |
Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than exercise. The health benefits of regular exercise and physical activity are hard to ignore. And the benefits of exercise are yours for the taking, regardless of your age, sex or physical ability. Need more convincing to exercise? Check out these seven ways exercise can improve your life. No. 1: Exercise controls weight Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn. You don’t need to set aside large chunks of time for exercise to reap weight-loss benefits. If you can’t do an actual workout, get more active throughout the day in simple ways — by taking the stairs instead of the elevator or revving up your household chores. No. 2: Exercise combats health conditions and diseases Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent high blood pressure? No matter what your current weight, being active boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or “good,” cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly, which decreases your risk of cardiovascular diseases. In fact, regular physical activity can help you prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, certain types of cancer, arthritis and falls. No. 3: Exercise improves mood Need an emotional lift? Or need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed. You may also feel better about your appearance and yourself when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. No. 4: Exercise boosts energy Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance. Exercise and physical activity deliver oxygen and nutrients to your tissues and help your cardiovascular system work more efficiently. And when your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you have more energy to go about your daily chores.
