Politics › Money Laundering: You’ve A Case To Answer, Court Tells Ohakim by ruggedboy01(op): 4:05am On Jul 01, 2016 |
ABUJA—The former governor of Imo State, Chief Ikedi Ohakim, on Thursday, failed to persuade the Federal High Court in Abuja to quash the three-count criminal charge the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, preferred against him.
The court, in a ruling by Justice Ademola Adeniyi, held that the former governor who piloted the affairs of Imo state between May 2007 and May 2011, has a case to answer pertaining to the charges against him.
The charges border on money laundering, abuse of office and misappropriation of public funds.
Justice Adeniyi held that the anti-graft agency successfully established a prima-facie criminal case against the defendant that would warrant him to enter his defence before the court.
Consequently, Ohakim’s no-case-submission was dismissed by the court which ordered the former governor to open his defence on October 10.
The charge against Ohakim arose from his alleged purchase of the property at 60, Kwame Nkrumah Street, Plot No 1098, Cadastral ZoneA04, Asokoro District, Abuja with cash payment of $2.29m which was said to be dollar equivalent of N270m in November 2008.
The property, according to the agency, was acquired with funds the defendant allegedly laundered from Imo state treasury.
He was also accused of failing to declare the property as part of his assets when asked by the EFCC to do so.
The prosecution said the erstwhile governor violated section 15(1)(d) and section 14(1)(b) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2004. Ohakim was said to have paid for the property in cash. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/07/money-laundering-youve-case-answer-court-tells-ohakim/

Politics › Police Step Up Security At Abia Govt. House; Premium Times by ruggedboy01(op): 3:20am On Jul 01, 2016*. Modified: 4:47pm On Jul 01, 2016 |
The Police have stepped up security around the Abia Government House in Umuahia, following report of the issuance of Certificate of Return to Uche Ogah as Governor-elect of the State.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that the news, which filtered into the state around noon, caused anxiety among residents of Umuahia, the state capital.
At the city centre, popularly called Isi- gate, some traders, tricycle riders and passersby expressed happiness over the development.
However, the situation was different at the Government House, where political office holders were seen moving hurriedly out of their offices, while workers simply watched.
Governor Okezie Ikpeazu, who was on his way to deliver an inaugural lecture at the Abia State University, Uturu when the news filtered in, cancelled the event and made a quick return to Aba.
Mr. Ikpeazu had operated from the Government House Liaison Office in Aba since he assumed office on May 29, 2015.
Hundreds of Mr. Ogah’s supporters moved to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, Owerri, to receive him.
Many other supporters were seen at the Government House main-gate in anticipation of his inauguration.
Attempts to get the reaction of officials of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state on the development were unsuccessful.
The Chairman of the party, Johnson Onuigbo, did not answer calls made to his cell phone. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/206240-police-step-security-abia-govt-house.html

Politics › N'delta Militants' Actions Wont Go Unpunished; YORUBA Elders by ruggedboy01(op): 4:53am On Jun 30, 2016 |
Say N'Delta militants' actions wont go unpunished YORUBA elders on the banner of the Yoruba Unity Forum, YUF, have decried what they termed as unprovoked attacks on Yoruba land, warning that ‘’enough is enough.’’
The umbrella body of Yoruba socio-cultural organisations was piqued by the recurring incidents of criminal activities of terrorists, militants, oil thieves, kidnappers, armed robbers and Fulani herdsmen in the region, which had claimed many lives and destroyed properties worth millions of naira in recent times.
In a statement by Rt Rev Emmanuel Gbonigi (chairman) and Senator Anthony Adefuye (secretary), the elders said they were compelled to aver again that the murderous activities of the criminals were stressing the peace” stability and corporate existence of the country.
Vowing that the attacks would not go unpunished, they said they would not allow the South-West to become a theatre for the prosecution.
The statement read in part: ‘’Nigeria is at,the precipice, threats of insecurity to life and property is no longer the exclusive preserve of any particular community. The peace and quiet in the South-west in the last few weeks has again come under attack in spite of the ongoing criminal activities of armed Fulani herdsmen in the region.
‘’The attacks this time is coming from an unlikely foe, the Niger Delta Militants. The despicable criminality by this group against innocent citizens of Igbolomu and Ishawo areas of Ikorodu In Lagos shall not go unpunished. The South-west, people are peaceful, accommodating, hospitable, and are gratified neighbours.'' http://www.vanguardngr.com/2016/06/yoruba-elders-fume-attacks-south-west/ |
