Where is your location , do you do installations and how far in advanced do I need to book your products (and services if applicable)?
I am interested in the spray tubes for a 2 acre piece of land early next week.

Is it possible that 2 acres can have a perimeter of 186m ?

I would hope that was just a slip of the keyboard, as that is easily check-able.
i.e (106m + 80m) X 2 = 186 X 2 = 372m

Ho-ly Cow shocked shocked shocked

I definitely did not expect all of this.

PqsMike:
ruggie , I've always tell people that you can not get an exact estimate online. Every project is unique. Meet a Qs for an estimate.
Check my profile/signature

@PqsMike , I understand what you are saying, but ask here was for an estimate. Anyone who takes an estimate and uses that as the "final cost" does not understand the meaning of the word estimate. More likely than not, an estimate is bound to change, especially when more details are revealed or become known.

yommy78:
Last year price of a roll of chain link was 17,000 the length per roll is 18m if u are lucky 17.5 or .7 sometimes. U need 2 inches round pipe .gauge 1.2mm d last year price was 3800 .it comes in 5.4m length.this price is d price I got from Abuja while doing a job in nassarawa state.so go ahead and do d calculation on d size of your farm . Re confirm d current price.

QSFemi:
Opinion of a Quantity Surveyor.

I handled a project last month, January 2017, which involved fencing of 6plots of land using the chain link material.
The following information will help in finding answer to your question.
1) Chain link comes in roll and the dimension is 18metres by 2.4metres. That's a roll size.
2) There are galvanized pipes you will need at the intervals to support the chain link. The pipes come in varying diameters. There is 75mm, 62.5mm, 50mm depending on what you want. The length of the pipe is the same and it is 5.4metres.
3) The price of the chain link as of January this year is 26k per roll (prime cost- cost of material in the market exclusive of transportation) and for the pipe, the price is 8k per one (75mm diameter).

Note. Market is very volatile now and there is astronomical increase in the price of construction materials now. This means that a market survey should be carried out now.

If you want to do the estimate on your own, this information will be helpful. However, if you need a professional estimate, I can do that for you at a fee.

Just mention me in your next post.

Thanks.

ochiosa:

You have 2 sizes one is around 15mts ×2.6mts and another is 15mts ×3.6mts. I used the one of 15 × 2.6 and the prize as @ December in delta state was #18k pre roll, let this guide u. Good luck
Thanks.

clifftop:
The perimeter is 106+80 = 186m

Mesh comes in 3m spans

No of mesh panels required = 186/3= 62 panels of wire mesh

With 63 intermediate post

You need concentina wire( razor coil) : a bundle covers 15m

No of bundle to cover 186 m = 186/15 = 13 rolls

Now concreting we can consider 400mm x400mmx600mm x 62=6.048m3 in a loose soil or 300*300*400 in a strong soil

For 6.048m3 we shall need

25 bags of cements

5 tones of granite and 5 tones of sharp Sand

For supply and execution you can chat me up on 07084412579 /Tolu

@yommy78, @QSFemi, @ochiosa and @clifftop
Thank you very much. What you have provided was kind of what I was expecting. A brief idea of what is involved for such an activity (e.g. the chain link fence, poles, concrete etc.) A few numbers around cost of each item at a specific point in time, since we all should know that prices move up and down a lot. A few numbers around what might be need based on the dimensions provided (or stating the dimensions of the the material to be used so that I can do the math). A possible total number, if you are comfortable with the information you have, and a finally disclaimer that all of it is subject to change if new details emerge.

I very much appreciate the details you guys have provided.

As to the discussion between Engr. Osaz and olawale100, Please guys, try to get to a resolution that will be acceptable by both of you.

As I stated earlier in the thread, this will be taken into consideration, but I can honestly say I have not made a decision yet, so any and everyone is still in the running, as I am still planning (and understanding) what is all needed for this.

JVExpat:

I just spoke with Osaz over the phone immediately I saw this because for me, i was shocked and my principle is to hear two sides of a story. Having personally contracted some jobs to him which in all sincerity he delivered perfectly, including a multi-storey building project we are currently developing in the same axis. He has so far lived up to expectation.

Btw, I am a real estate developer, practicing for over 15 years now and based on my industry knowledge and versatility, I did a thorough background check on Engr Osaz and got good recommendation from all quarters, including the relevant professional bodies. Infact this is the first time I'm reading otherwise about him.

Based on his explanation over the phone and your post here, this issue is purely that of misunderstanding and could easily have being resolved on a round table.
You contracted him to construct pile foundations but didnt specify that he must use a machine. He decided to use manual method which is not necessarily a bad option but i feel it may be slower. Personally I have seen manual method being used for boring piles of that width up to 15m depth but you or your supervising engineer refused, then he asked for an upward cost review if you insist on the use of machines, you also declined, he then in good faith and to build client relationship had to mobilized a machine to site which was not his, since his own was faulty at the time and according to him, he informed you about everything. He still retained his workmen on site to monitor the activities of the new machine operator, after giving them specific instructions which they adhered to.

According to him, He made quasi-dry mix concrete with adequate concrete mix ratio, which your supervising engineer refused for whatever reason. His men worked the reinforcement well and mix the concrete properly to instruction. He was on the site everyday since the machine was mobilized but didnt always stay on site all day. Again, I don't think that's much of a problem since i don't expect that a contractor should be micro-managed inasmuch as he already have site representatives there.

Next, you said the machine operator downed tool after 26 points. He refuted that, saying the action was certainly stage-managed by the machine owner having released enough money to them to drill up to 35 points (which is about 78% of the job) but they stopped at 29 points . According to him, this could have being done in conjunction with your supervising engineer who constantly asked for 'settlement' which he didn't give to him at the time. The idea may have been to hijack the project from him so they can sit on it. He sent me enough evidence on whatsapp to prove that anyway. The machine operator didn't stop while he was on site for about 4 hours that morning until he left the site to attend to issues elsewhere. That's enough reason to suspect a foul play!

Rather than allow him take up issue with the machine owner he himself brought and compel them to work, he said you simply transferred money to the machine owner in the midst of the crisis without his consent and asked that he stay off the site as you are now prepared to complete the project using his balance payment left with you. That was a very wrong action by basic contract law. He then said he called you and asked that if by any means in your quest to control the site yourself you happen to have spent above the balance of the contract sum left with you, he was willing to do a refund. But you told him not to worry about anything that you do not need any refund from him.

Although, he has shown enough maturity by promising not to join issues with you. That for me is enough respect for you sir. Some persons may rather take legal actions even based on this post. Resorting to blackmail the personality of this young gentle man is really unfair to him. For me, I still have no problems or issues with him so far on any of my sites, until he proves otherwise.

Thank you for your contribution here.

Unfortunately, since what you are talking about here is not related to the main topic of this thread, nor at a second level, not providing your own testimonial about the work this person, Engr Osaz, has done for you, I, unlike most people , would actually view what you , @JVExpat, said as a big negative.

Unless you are his lawyer, the Engr. should be able to defend himself in public, if he so desires, or work with the person, in private, who made the comments to clear any misunderstanding and have the other person potentially remove, rewrite or make additional comments that may shed new light on the situation.

Somebody else jumping in on his behalf tells me "as long as everything is going well , all is good, but if there is some unforeseen condition that pops up, which happens in life, this person might not be willing to help work through the condition." (Again, I know my thinking is a bit different from other people, but that works for me.)

Anyway, as I have told the Engr, as well as others that have made direct contact, I do not plan to make a decision to work with anyone until the middle of March as the work is intended to start by the 3rd week of March. I will be making my evaluations then. I am just planning ahead.

I am writing this review not to cast aspersion on anybody's character but to guide and inform would be (future) clients on the likely quality of service they may get when you engage Engr Osaz – real name Osazuwa Enobakhare
I wanted to do pile foundation for a property at Ikate Elegushi, Lekki area of Lagos.
I got three quotes from nairalanders and after careful analysis and comparison, I decided to go with Engr. Osaz. I must confess my decision to go with Engr. Osaz was after reading the nice review written by one of his client, a medical doctor about the good job Engr. Osaz did for him at Isheri and also because he repeatedly stated that he is a structural engineer and will ensure the project will be properly & personally supervised.

After initial discussion and a quote was sent, I requested for a contract, he mentioned it won’t be necessary because the job is not that “big and serious”.
He sent his quote and I did not negotiate at all because I believe I am getting a value added service after Engr. Osaz assured me that he being a structural engineer will ensure the project is properly supervised and handled.
After mobilizing him with about 25% of the project cost, he came to site with some equipment, I enquired from him where the drilling machine is, I was shocked when he said he will use hand drilling option. I informed him I am not comfortable with this option because the piles are 10 meters deep, and 450mm diameter for 45 pile points. At no time did he specified that hand drilling will be used. Lesson learnt is that when dealing with people, there should be no assumption at all.
He reviewed the cost upward. At that time I was not willing to go ahead with him again. He had dug a borehole (I agreed to provide the submersible pump). I informed him that he should deduct the cost of the borehole and transport for the hand drills. I stated categorically that I will only use mechanical drilling machine, he said he review the cost and get back to me. He reviewed the cost upward by 300k. I perused and informed him he should just refund me less borehole and transport cost, he later sent another email that he has reverted to the original quote.
At this point, I sensed it may be difficult and hectic to retrieve money from Engr. Osaz without it getting ugly or resulting to waste of time, I decided to go ahead with him. He requested for additional funds. I was not willing to part with more funds without seeing the drilling machine on site. He persuaded me that once I move the funds to him, he will bring the machine and move to site and ensure there is good progress on the project. After paying him, it took about two days for him to bring the machine to site. I lost my cool and reached out to him. I practically called him about 2o times within a period of 5 hours, his phone did not go through, always going to voicemail.
Eventually, the next day, they started drilling, I got to site, I could not see any casting machine, I asked Osaz, Osaz said they will use dry mix. I have a supervising engineer on site who at this time became so furious and refused to allow work to proceed until a casting machine is brought to site. Osaz refused to provide a casting machine, stating the cost will be borne by me. I made arrangement for 6 days for casting machine and operator. I paid from my pocket for this. At this point, Osaz had been paid about 78% of the project cost.
My supervising engineer is always on site and was not happy with the handling and execution of the project. Osaz apparently subcontracted the drilling job to someone else and was not there to supervise as he had promised. About the 4th day, 26 pile points had been drilled and casted.
On day 5, Osaz came late in the evening to site and was having challenges paying the caster 10,000. Nobody was supervising the casting process. He charged me over 3 times of what he was paying them. My engineer informed me about this and I was really upset.
I came to site the next morning, the caster informed me that the casting crew are not happy with the rate Osaz is paying them, they had casted 5 points the day before and each of them got 1,000 each. I arranged 6 workers, promised to pay them 2,200 per point, bought shovels and decided to take over the casting as I was really disappointed with the way Osaz was going about the project.
In the Afternoon, I got the greatest shock on this project, the drillers down tooled, Osaz had only paid them for 20 points and they were supposed to be paid for another 20 points before they can proceed. I had to breach protocol, I engaged the drillers because I cannot afford my project to be stalled. (I am also paying for the casting machine on a daily basis) I enquired how much is being owed for the remaining 25 pile points. They told me it is 375,000. I moved 300,000 to the owner of the drilling machine and he immediately directed his boys to commence work. Osaz was no where to be found, he was incommunicado. He had the effrontery to call me and tell me cock and bull stories. I told him I have left him to God but I just had to let people know the type of person this guy is.
AT the end, I paid for the concrete job for the last 12 points, I paid the drillers a sum of N375,000
Net, I lost some money but not so much, Osaz abandoned the job after he had collected a huge chunk of money from me for the project.
He stopped coming to site altogether and most painful is when you call him and his phone does not go through. His is the most irresponsible behavior I have seen in a “professional”. I told him that most of my artisans that are not educated are more reliable and protect their reputation better.
Osaz is not a man of his words, as a feedback, I will never engage Engr Osaz again and if I know anyone that is interested in engaging him, I will advise the party accordingly.
That is my personal experience with this man

Thank you for taking the time to voice you opinion.
It is appreciated an it will be taken into consideration when a final decision needs to be made.

1000 an acre..

Is only possible at 1.5 meters spacing.

You plant 34 x 34 spots with 1.5m spacing between them on an acre.

I however think the spacing will be too dense
The leaves will not have free space to get sunlight.. .

Thanks for the clarification.
However it does seem that with the spacing mentioned (1.5m) could have a few more added to that 1000 number. But then if you are thinking ahead to harvest time, and would prefer to reduce the distance of carrying the plantains from the tree to the truck (by driving the truck into the farm ) then this might be the way to go.

I used the following to model it out.

Need a lay out like this asap

Please do not take this the wrong way. As mentioned earlier in this thread, I am a strong believer in open-source. To that end, any assistance / contribution I might provide would most likely be in this forum out in the open. ( and maybe in about 6 to 18 months, a website that I will establish for my farm if the farm meets my 1st year success targets) . That way, if I make a mistake, there will be many that can jump in and help correct , in order to help everyone learn and improve.

Also, since it sounds like you need this quickly, I would hope that part of the services that the AgriBusiness organizations (the ones that advertise to help setup farms and contribute to these forums) would be to produce layouts that are more detailed and complete than what I have done so far. ( Of course, for a fee, as that is how people make a living in an open-source environment). I am not one of these AgriBusinesses. I am just Systems Architect taking an analyst approach to solving a series of problems.

With that said, if you are comfortable enough in sharing your relevant details needed for the layout, and you are not in that much of a rush, I could definitely try to help out.

Thank you for the back and forth on this topic. However, as you probably can see, I prefer to model things out.

So, for either 1000, 2000 or whatever number anyone believes can be planted on one acre , ( yes, I do know that what I have specified is in the subject is about 1.46 acres , not hectares, I choose to say 1 acre now in order so that everyone has a common base to work off of) , can you please help me , and anyone that might eventually read this at some point in the future by indicating what spacing will achieve the numbers you are stating.

So, I finally have the piece of land fully transferred to me.
And as with almost everything in life, plans change.

Latest update to plans after viewing the location myself...

There are some bamboo trees present, so the plan is to use the bamboo tree to build the sheds / storage areas after the initial planting completes. Once all the bamboo are gone / used up, then that area will be cleared properly and potentially pawpaw or pineapple (or both) will be planted in that area.

Let's be informed. You can not get more than 800 pawpaw in an acre of land by a standard spacing of 2m x 2m.

Well, in purely mathematical terms, 1 acre can have about 961 trees planted if the spacing is 2m x 2m.
You can do the calculation yourself with the following calculator ... http://odeyemi.net:8088/est/index.php
But then, you have to factor in the fact that you will not be planting directly on the property line the number can come down to 900 or even a little below that.

And of course there are probably other things to consider, like you might need to use some space as a workspace or staging area.

Well, I agree, but this stage doesn't come naturally to the average Nigerian. I've seen real life experiences of people jumping into farming without proper planning, and then having to jump right back out, after being badly burned.

Interesting. A tech person interested in farming. Rare breed. Quick question though. Is this an opportunity you saw, and are taking advantage of, or have you had farming in the works prior to this? (if this option, I'd like to know why, if you wouldn't mind)

All of the above.
Long stories, but yes I knew that eventually I will do something in farming, either full-time or part-time. (But my secondary school experience turned me off to it / suspended my interest temporarily). And, as I mentioned at the beginning of this thread, an opportunity is coming my way that would allow me to get in.

Why not use drip instead of spray.
organic/inorganic fertilizer

Even though drip looks like it would conserve water and would not require a pump as powerful as one needed for spray tubes, drip seems to require a precision which does not seem adaptable to change. Today I am thinking plantain, but tomorrow, next year, or next decade I might be thinking tomatoes or pineapples or something else, and from what I see and read about drip, it does not seem to be easily reconfigured. (And yes, I do realize I am making an assumption that both spray tubes and drip are long term infrastructure cost, and not something that needs to be replaced every two year or less.)

With regards to organic vs. inorganic fertilizer, I would like to believe that I would go the organic path (I understand the the positives and negatives of both), but deep down, it is going to be a matter of economics. A balance between the cost of acquiring and using the fertilizer vs (initially , the perceived , and then afterward, the real) harvest resulting from using one or the other. With that in mind, organic seems to be feasible only if you have your own source in-house (rearing animals in large enough quantities and/or composting-mulching). If not, which is my case, inorganic seems to be the way to go, as the market does not seems to distinguish nor pay a premium for one over the other if they both produce the same results. The market seems to be looking for "it looks big and it looks healthy".

Now, I have to put a big disclaimer out at this point. I do not have a farming, agriculture or even biology background/experience ( I actually made it a point to not take those classes in secondary school and university ). Everything I say is based on taking a "systems" approach to analyzing the situation (the "system" here being a farm land, an applying the rule that just because something is considered "the best" does not mean it is the right answer for this system).

Well, I would hope everyone going into any kind of venture, including farming would be as detailed as possible (unless the person is an investor / silent partner or have unlimited resources .... then such detail would not be needed).

I just wrote it out in the open because I am a believer in open-source , (my background is systems architecture / computer programming) , and like with programming, everyone is better off when the knowledge is share and the primary differentiator is how things/knowledge/plans are implemented and executed.

you can plant plantain and inter crop it with pineapple and take a plot or more to plant tree fruits like oranges, mangoes, pear, guava etc and thank me with something later.

I have considered the idea of intercropping, but that seems like it will require a bit more attention than what I have to give in the immediate future. Eventually, I will most likely go down that path, especially with the side that has 3m X 3m spacing.

With regards to tree fruits, I have not considered that as an option because I am more interested in crops (or animals smiley ) that could be planted (or rearing started) at anytime of the year when the right conditions are in place, be it naturally or artificially provided conditions. However, after completing this first part (the plantain section), I will definitely look into tree fruits as an option for when I get close to the time I can commit full time to this.

Thanks for the idea.

Assuming you have a square parcel of land, 63.75m X 63.75m should give you about 1 acre, which comes out to about 441. (Diagram generated to show how it would be laid out as well.) You can put in you exact dimensions for a more accurate calculation.

Doing a 2m X 2m spacing will get you closer to the 1000 mark you mention ( around 961).

Agriculture / Re: Micro Spray Tube For Plantain And Other Crops For SALE!!! by ruggie: 6:08am On Dec 18, 2016
Moyanbe:

I have check your farm layout and calculate it. You will need 1,800 meters of the micro spray tube.
A meter is #100
1800m = #180,000

But it can be reduced depending on modification. I will advise have a chat on whatsapp or call. My line is 08139120967.
Thanks

Thank you.
Based on what was said in the video, a gravity tank is a potential option for use with these spay tubes.
My question is, how high would the tank have to be in order to maintain enough pressure that would allow the tube to reach maximum coverage for a 75m to 80m length tube? Does one have to turn on each section one by one with the others off ?

I do not use whatsapp, so I will be calling, but most likely that call will be after christmas, as I am still in the information gathering phase until then.

alakara:
your spacing is ok
you can use 3by 2 or 2.5 by 2.5 m.
Back to your question.
Advantage : high density. if you mange it very well with good agronomy practices.

Disadvantage :
Low yield.
easy Transmission of diseases and pest.
overcrowding.

Thank you.
Is your suggestion here that going down to a spacing of 1.5m by 1.5m would be too close together?
My thought process was that it is simpler to convert a 3m by 3m spacing to a 1.5m by 1.5m spacing in order to achieve a "start small, then expand approach" . It seems it would be more difficult to convert two options you mentioned.
