7. William Halsted – Cocaine
William Halsted has been described as one
of the most important and innovative
American surgeons of all time. He
revolutionized medical advances in surgery
with his strict aseptic techniques, the use of
the finest silk for suture materials and the
pushing of complete closure of wounds
whenever possible. The renowned surgeon
began to become involved with cocaine after
he found out that he could use it as a
numbing agent for his surgeries. Halsted’s
career began to crumble as he began to let
his cocaine addiction take over his life, even
having to walk away from a surgery that he
was in the middle of due to being high on
cocaine. Halsted recognized his need for
intervention and committed himself into an
insane asylum since those were the only
available means for ridding an addiction
during that time. However, Halstead was
never fully able to free himself from the
addiction which left him to struggle with
cocaine for the rest of his life.

his use and fascination with cocaine. He was a
well known advocate of the drug as he noted
that it made his sadness disappear and he
believed that he was able to talk about
things that were locked away in his brain.
Many believe that this is what led to Freud’s
development of talk therapy. However, it
was during the 1890′s that Freud had to
stop with his usage of cocaine after he
almost killed one of his patients’ that was
under the influence of the drug.

inventions, Edison needed to be able to stay
awake at night to get work done. Thus, he
turned to Vin Mariani for an energy boost.

mixed with coca leaf extract. Vin Mariani
was advertised as being an antidote for

recognized for not only his entrepreneurial
spirit, but also for his creativity. Jobs had
credited his ability to concoct creative ideas
from his experiences when he used LSD.

been quoted as stating that taking LSD was
one of the “two or three most important
things” he ever did in his life. Jobs
reportedly took LSD on a sugar cube or in a
hard form of gelatin. He took it when he was
alone and loved the positive experiences he
had from the drug. Jobs also utilized
marijuana, as he said it would help relax and
become more creative.

believed marijuana “amplifies torpid
sensibilities and produces what to me are
even more interesting effects.” Sagan also

with an improved appreciation for art as
well as heightened experiences in daily

and sexual activities.

& LSD

for his eccentricities and had made it public
knowledge that he was a cannabis user on top
of having experimented with LSD. His
experiments with LSD were due to his
fascination with dream states which is why
he also experimented with sensory
deprivation. Although, Feynman did explain
that he was a bit apprehensive to experiment
with LSD since he was a big fan of thinking
and didn’t want to risk destroying his ability
to do so.

6. Steve Jobs
The late Apple Inc. & Pixar founder Steve
Jobs left Reed College in Portland, Oregon,
after only six months. Yet, he admitted that
it was a calligraphy class he took in college
that inspired the typography used in the
first Mac. In 1974, he became a video game
designer for Atari, but it didn’t last long as
he left the job to travel to India. At 21, he
founded Apple Computers together with
Steve Wozniak in his garage. Innovation was
their trademark, and they struggled to make
computers smaller and more accessible to
the general public. In 1985, Jobs resigned as
CEO of Apple, but he returned in 1997,
reviving the company after a dark age of
fallouts. The famous entrepreneur and
inventor died of respiratory arrest caused
by a pancreatic tumor in 2011.

it bigger, stronger, and more successful than
ever, renaming it Turner Broadcasting. He
was only 24 at the time. Turner himself once

The youngest billionaire in history, Mark
Zuckerberg became even more famous in
2010 when the acclaimed movie The Social
Network revealed the story behind the
world’s most visited website today. He
launched Facebook in February 2004 from
his dormitory room at Harvard. By the end
of the year, the platform already counted
over 1 million users. There was no reason left
for him to stay, so Mark left Harvard in his
sophomore year and moved to Silicon Valley
to work on Facebook full-time. Yet we have
to agree that if it wasn’t for his Harvard
years, he probably would have never
launched Facebook at all. The business model
and target audience had Harvard written all
over them. Also, if he had stayed in school, it
probably wouldn’t be what it is today either.
3. Larry Ellison
Co-founder and CEO of Oracle, Larry
Ellison has quite the life story to tell. As he
himself stated, “I have had all the

uncle from Chicago. In 1962, he enrolled at
the University of Illinois, and was named
Science Student of the Year. In his second
year, after his adoptive mother died, he
dropped out. Next fall, he signed up for the
University of Chicago, but quit and moved to
North California where he began working as
a programmer for Amdahl Corporation. In
1977, he and two of his coworkers founded
Software Development Labs, with Ellison as
CEO. The company went on to develop a
system for commercial applications, Oracle.
Larry Ellison is America’s third richest man

We’ve all heard the myth of the successful
college dropout, and we so eagerly want to
believe it can be true, that despite doing
things differently and not following the
patterns our parents and society enforce on
us, we will still find fame and fortune.
However, the sad reality is that most
dropouts end up poor or unemployed. Of
course, there’s a grain of truth to every
legend, and there are certain media and
computer tycoons that prove otherwise.
There are 2.5 million people with a PhD and
around 30 million college dropouts in the
U.S. Pretty concerning, but if these
billionaires succeeded, why can’t everyone?
First, we have to acknowledge that these are
exceptional people who built their careers
and companies from scratch. They had a
clear picture of what their future would look
like, and wanted to take matters into their
own hands without further delay. They knew
how to take risks; innovation and strong-will
the keys to their success. As Bill Gates once
said, “Too many of our students fail to
graduate from high school with the basic
skills they will need to succeed in the
21st century economy, much less prepared
for the rigors of college and career.”

CrimeShocker: Couple Sell Daughter For Iphone by Ruhbiee(op): 8:36am On Oct 19, 2013
A young Chinese couple are facing criminal punishment for “selling” their infant daughter and using the proceeds to buy an Apple iPhone, state media said Friday.
Shanghai prosecutors have brought a case against them for human trafficking after they illegally put their third child up for adoption online and accepted money for the baby, the Liberation Daily reported.
Investigators found the mother, whose full name was not given, used the money to buy an iPhone, high-end sports shoes and other goods, it said.
Apple’s products are wildly popular in China, where a teenager sold his kidney and used the funds to buy an iPhone and iPad in an incident widely reported last year.
But the couple told police that they wanted the girl to have a better upbringing than they could afford, since they already had two children.
“Giving away the child was not for obtaining benefits, but giving the child better guarantees,” one said.
Some Chinese, especially in rural areas, have a traditional preference for sons though reports did not say if the child’s gender was also a factor in the case.
Online commentary condemned the couple, though some used black humour to describe modern Chinese society and the quest for wealth.
“So cold-blooded! These people do not deserve the right to be parents!” said Wangzhan1969 in a microblog posting.
“This is good business — no capital, huge profit and no need to sell kidneys,” said another posting.
An official of the prosecutor’s office handling the case expressed worry over “sensationalism” surrounding the affair but declined to comment further to AFP.
Shanghai police could not be reached for comment.
Reports did not give the amount the couple received for the child, but their online postings asked for 30,000 yuan and 50,000 yuan ($4,900 and $8,200).
Apple last month launched the iPhone 5s, including a gold-coloured model, and the more budget-conscious iPhone 5c in China.

Recurring bloating
While women tend to get bloated more often than men due to their menstrual cycle, if you discover that you’re bloated more often than not, it’s worth getting it investigated. Keep an eye out for gas, pain in the abdomen or difficulty while eating. It could be due to an underlying gynaecological problem, which may need to be checked. What to do: Visit your gynaecologist soon.

Excruciating headaches
A burst blood vessel in your brain could trigger sudden and extremelypainful headaches. Called a ruptured aneurysm, this requires urgent attention. Additional symptoms include chest pain, exhaustion and deteriorating vision, which could indicate cardiac cephalgia or meningitis.
What to do: Ask your GP whether you need to do any tests to diagnose the reason for the agonising headaches.

Painful toothache
A little bit of a sting or pain while having an ice-cream or a chilled drink is okay, shooting pain is not. If you feel like your teeth are feeling extra sensitive, it’s time you make a trip to the dentist. A bad toothache could mean that a nerve in the tooth has been damaged — a sign of rotting teeth. The more you keep postponing a visit to the dentist, the more the bacteria will spread in your mouth, leading to severe pain.
What to do: Book an appointment with your dentist asap.

Pain in the chest
Certain foods cause heartburn or indigestion. You need to identify the difference between that and something that could be potentially more dangerous. Don’t let the thought of a heart problem deter you from visiting the doctor. When you feel like there is a load on your chest — quite literally — or pain, it may just be one of the many signs of a heart attack.
What to do: Don’t wait — get yourself checked immediately to find out how serious the problem is.

Unnatural hair growth
While all of us have hair on our bodies, if you notice thick, dark hair on your face, chest, stomach or near your breasts, it could indicate a gynaecological problem Polycystic Ovary Syndrome(PCOS). This occurs when there is an imbalance of female hormones in the body. Other symptoms include irregular periods and trouble conceiving.
What to do: Your gynaecologist may ask you to do tests to detemine the cause.

Sudden weight loss
Whether you’re dieting and exercising or not, losing a lot more weight than you should or losing weight suddenly for no apparent reason, is a cause for concern. Unexplained weight loss could be pointing out towards an underlying illness, a sign of diabetes or several other health problems.
What to do: Don’t procrastinate. Get a check-up done immediately.

Problem in the bedroom
One of the most common problems, erectile dysfunction happens to all men at some point in their lives. But if it is a recurring problem, you need to get it checked.
What to do: Visit a sexpert or a urologist who will ask you to do some tests.
