Jumia has a problem with managing logistics locally and had to outsource it which made their cost of delivery way higher than konga. If they scale up and adopt similar model they won't make reasonable sales because the bigger companies they compete with have far better strategies. For example temu is now has free shipping advantage from china to any country and they are now building large warehouses in different countries to ensure same day delivery. If jumia goes global, it is not going to have that same free shipping advantage from it's headquarters to any destination country. All the goods sold by temu are produced in china. They don't have to buy from one country to deliver to another thereby making it too expensive. Jumia sellers buy from china, add their profit, jumia charges them also, and then if there are to deliver to a third country without free shipping, that will make the cost of the item far costlier on jumia than it is on every other e-commerce company website. Ebay has items produced in the US. Jumia has nothing produced in Nigeria. E-commerce businesses favour countries that manufacture their own products more

Slamming tarrifs on china is a good temporal measure not for buyers but for industries and the country. It will prevent unemployment that could arise from shutdown of local businesses that are unable to compete with imported goods. The government can help such local.businesses scale up by providing funds to automate, and boost the quantity they can produce. Local manufacturers can sell at lower prices than imported goods if they equally scale up, manufacturing larger quantities through automated processes. The government funding them to go bigger is the solution

There is what we call economics of scale. The bulkier the quantity produced, the cheaper the cost of producing them. The cheaper the cost of production, the cheaper the selling cost. Apart from government subsidies which Chinese businesses enjoy, this principle of economics of scale is the reason what you produce in Nigeria costs you more to buy than what you import from china. The Chinese have mastered the act of mass production, scaling up and automation for faster production than Nigeria where technology and engineering skills and automation are largely missing

Cement importation policy banned importation when dangote started producing. Gypsum importation was also banned when dangote started producing. The problem with rice policy of buhari is that it was an insincere one. Only southern ports were blocked, northern borders were opened.
