Condoles with sports minister over wife’s death

President Muhammadu Buhari yesterday called and spoke with the minister of youth and sports development, Solomon Dalung, from London, where he is currently on vacation.

The president called to commiserate with the minister over the death of his wife, Mrs Briskila Dalung, who died after a brief illness in the early hours of January 29, 2017 in Jos, Plateau State.

President Buhari, who spoke to Dalung through the telephone, prayed God to grant the soul of the departed eternal rest.

The special assistant, media, to the minister, Nneka Anibeze, in a statement on behalf of the minister, said the president expressed shock at the death of Mrs Dalung at an unripe age and prayed that God would forgive her sins.

He also prayed to God to give the family she left behind the fortitude to bear the loss and promised to support the Dalung family in their moment of grief.

Dalung had on Sunday, announced the death of his wife on his Facebook page, with a post which reads: “I AM BEREAVED: For it is appointed for man to live thereafter comes death and judgement says the Holy Bible. While in the Quran, it states that it is appointed that every soul shall taste death.

“My heart is heavy, I cannot continue, I lost my first wife this morning. May her soul and the souls of the faithful departed rest in the bosom of the lord, amen. What a black Sunday.”

There have been speculations about the president’s health since he left the country for his annual leave, with a section of the population calling on him to address the nation from his holiday destination. This is in spite of several photographs of the president receiving guests including Ogun State governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

The president’s wife, Hajiya Aisha Buhari also visited him in London last weekend.

Special adviser to the president on media and publicity, Femi Adesina, had in a statement announcing the president’s leave, said that: “During the vacation, the President will also undergo routine medical check-ups.”

He is expected to resume work on February 6, 2017.

Sympathisers from all walks of life have continued to troop Dalung’s Abuja residence to condole with him over the unfortunate occurrence.

Among the early callers were the Ministers of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonaya Onu; Minister of FCT Mohammed Musa Bello; Minister of State for Solid Minerals, Mohammed Abubakar Bawa Bwari; Senior Special Assistant to the President on Political Affairs, Hon Gideon Samani; and Ambassador Anthem Wuyep.

Others are President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), Engr Habu Gumel; a former governorship aspirant in Plateau State, Architect John Alkali; immediate past permanent secretary of the Ministry of Youth & Sports Development, Christian Chinyeaka Oha; and Director-general of the National Sports Institute (NSI), Dr Chukwu Eke, amongst others.

Earlier in the day, Dalung was welcomed back home from London and condoled by the entire directors of the ministry, led by the acting permanent secretary, Mr Abdul Razak Salawu.

Although final arrangements for the burial of the late Mrs Dalung were still being worked out by the family, it is certain that her burial would take place at Sabongida, Langtang South local government area of Plateau State on Saturday, February 4, 2017.

She is survived by five children and her husband.

Meanwhile, the Nigeria Tennis Federation in a condolence message to the minister signed by its president, Engr Sani Ndanusa, said: “This is to express our heart-felt condolence with the Sports Minister, Solomon Dalung, following the passing away of his wife. We share in your grief, knowing how painful it is to lose a pillar in one’s life, as in the case of your beloved wife who must have helped in molding a man of substance. We pray that you bear the fortitude of this irreparable loss while we also pray for the repose of the soul of the deceased.”

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Former U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Wednesday that he won’t run for South Korea’s presidency, a surprise announcement that removes a key figure in the scramble to replace impeached President Park Geun-hye and further stirs the country’s already tumultuous politics.

The withdrawal of Ban, who had been considered the only major conservative contender, boosts liberal Moon Jae-in, who has enjoyed a comfortable lead in opinion surveys since Park was impeached in December.

Ban, during a hastily arranged news conference, said he had wanted to use his 10 years of experience as U.N. chief to resolve a national crisis and achieve unity. But he said his “pure patriotism” and pushes for a political reform were badly damaged by political slandering and by “various fake news” that targeted him.

He did not elaborate, but Ban has faced growing media questions about his political competence and about corruption allegations.

“I was also very disappointed by old-fashioned, narrow-minded egoistic attitudes by some politicians, and I came to a conclusion that it would be meaningless to work together with them,” he said.

Politics in South Korea have been upended by a massive scandal involving Park and her confidante, which prompted millions to take to the streets in protest. Park’s prime minister is currently the caretaker leader while Park is on a trial at the Constitutional Court, which is deliberating about whether to confirm Park’s impeachment or restore her to power.

If she is thrown out, presidential elections, originally set for December, would instead be held within two months of any ruling.

Ban, a former South Korean foreign minister, had initially generated sizable interest in his home country after leading the United Nations and was widely seen as testing the political waters before announcing his candidacy.

But his approval ratings have been falling in opinion surveys on who should succeed Park. A survey released this week showed Moon, who lost the 2012 election to Park, had a 32.8 percent approval rating while Ban ranked second with 13.1 percent.

In the weeks following his return to South Korea on Jan. 12, Ban repeatedly denied allegations raised in the media that he took bribes from a businessman at the center of a corruption scandal that led to the suicide of former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun in 2009. Moon served as Roh’s presidential chief of staff.

Ban was also forced to defend himself over the criminal charges against two of his relatives, who have been indicted in the United States for plotting to bribe a Middle East official to influence the $800 million sale of a building complex in Vietnam. Ban has said he knew nothing about the alleged criminal activities of his relatives.

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has launched a blistering attack on Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State, describing him as a clueless person who would do better as a militant than as a governor.

Affirming his superiority in industry, governance, and oratory over his Anambra State counterpart, Okorocha challenged journalists in the South-East to make a comparison of governance and infrastructural development in Imo and Anambra States to confirm his assertion. While describing Governor Obiano as an analogue governor unfit to rule a state like Anambra with its stirring political history, Okorocha pointed to his strides in business, economy and politics which put him head and shoulder above Obiano.

Okorocha’s assertion was against the background of Obiano’s denial of the claim by the Imo State governor that three of the four other South-East governors were in talks with him towards defecting to the All Progressives Congress, APC. Obiano, like the other governors, strongly rebuffed Okorocha with the former saying that Okorocha’s credentials in leadership were not worthy to inspire anyone to follow him. Okorocha in a sharp reaction, through his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Sam Onwuemeodo, in Owerri, yesterday, said: “That kind of motor park language was unexpected from a governor of a state who answers His Excellency, even when the Anambra governor did not explain what he meant by that. In what way was Governor Okorocha not an example of what a leader should be? “Governor Okorocha’s claim was a healthy one, expected to provoke sound debates, which is the beauty of democracy. Governors with ideas and the right exposure gave their polite reactions, but the one without ideas (Obiano) took to insults. Only men with nothing to offer in terms of ideas take delight in insulting others.

Men of ideas do not insult others. “Leadership is all about ideas and service. Luckily enough, Obiano has been governor for almost four years while Okorocha has also been governor for five years now. Let Obiano publish his achievements in Anambra State even with high IGR, and let Governor Okorocha also publish his achievements in Imo.

Then, we take off from there. “As governor, Owelle Okorocha came up with ideas and popular policies like free education at all levels which has been working well in Imo, Community Government Councils (CGC), urban renewal programme, Ikuola Nkwu, Imo Air, massive road networks, building of universities, infrastructural revolution, and so many others.

Let Governor Obiano mention at least one programme his government in Anambra State is known for, almost four years as governor. “We may at this point, challenge journalists from the South-East to embark on project tours of Imo and Anambra and make their findings known to the public.

Obiano, no doubt, has taken Anambra State several kilometres backward, while in Imo, Okorocha has raised the bar of leadership or governance. “To say the least, comparing Okorocha with Obiano is like comparing Messi of Barcelona FC with the left wing player of Mberi Secondary in Mbaitoli LGA of Imo State.”

UGHELLI—AN unidentified policemen, Monday, sustained gunshot injuries during a gun battle between some herdsmen and a team of policemen from the Ughelli Area Command, Delta State. Also the Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, codenamed Operation Delta Safe, yesterday, said its troops have killed two notorious militants in a shootout along the Obama Flow Station axis of Nembe Bayelsa East senatorial district of Bayelsa State.

The incident, it was gathered, occurred at Bridge 4, along the Ohoror axis of the East-West Road in Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state. Confirming the incident to Vanguard yesterday, a top official of the Ohoror community executive, who accompanied the police team, headed by the Ughelli Area Commander, Mr. Usman Ndanbabo, on the operation, disclosed that one of the herdsmen was apprehended while others, numbering over 20, fled into the bush.

The source said: “When the Area Commander saw the herdsmen, he beckoned on them in his native tongue to come to him so that they can talk. But they refused. Before we knew what was happening, there were gunshots from both sides as the herdsmen fled in all directions. “At the end of the day, a policeman was shot, while one of the herdsmen, who fled into the river with his AK-47, was apprehended and immediately taken to the Police Command headquarters, Asaba, for investigation.” A senior officer at the Ughelli Area Command described the report as “baseless and unfounded,” while the state Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Aniamaka, promised to get back to Vanguard with details, but had not done so at press time. The Joint Task Force in the Niger Delta, codenamed Operation Delta Safe, yesterday, said its troops have killed two notorious militants in a shootout along the Obama Flow Station axis of Nembe Bayelsa East senatorial district of Bayelsa State. Troops of Sector 2, deployed in the area, reportedly raided the camp of the militants, following a tip-off by the locals and vigilante, which resulted in a shootout and death of the militants. According to a statement by the spokesman of the operation, Lt.-Col Olaolu Daudu, in Yenagoa: ”One of the suspects is a notorious leader of criminals, popularly known as Labista, who is on security agencies watch list and had at various times engaged in high profile kidnapping, killing of security personnel in ambushes, piracy, robbery and other criminal activities. “Labista and his cohort dived into the river in a bid to escape, while the raid was ongoing and were engaged by our troops. “At the end of the operation, the bodies of two notorious criminals were found floating on the waters.

They were recovered and deposited at government morgue.” Items recovered, he said, included two single-barrelled guns, cutlass and four speed boats. The Commander of Operation Delta Safe, Rear Admiral Apochi Ogabu Suleiman, according to the statement, assured the people of the region of their safety and security.
