Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier-General Suleiman Kazure, has assured corps members posted to northern parts of the country of their safety. The NYSC boss spoke yesterday while addressing 2016 Batch B corps members posted to Niger State, at the orientation camp in Paiko Local Government Area of the state. He disclosed that 90 per cent of corps members posted to the north had applied for redeployment. He, however, assured that “the north is no longer volatile.” Represented by the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT), Mrs. Christy Ifeyinwa Uba, Kazure said the successes recorded by the military, had brought normalcy to the entire north. He appealed to corps members not to be discourage by the negative stories they had heard about the north. “I want to assure you that the north is now peaceful and the people are friendly. Keep an open mind and give it a chance and a trial. “Your posting is not by mistake, stay here and make some impact on the people of the state”, he said. He warned corps members to desist from channelling their complaints and grievances through the social media. “This is a disciplined organisation. If you have issues or complaints, meet either your local government or zonal coordinator and even your state coordinator rather than taking to the social media”, he added. Barring any unforeseen setbacks, President Muhammadu Buhari is scheduled to return to the country from his vacation to the United Kingdom this Saturday. A source close to the president told LEADERSHIP yesterday that except there would be any last minute change, all is set for President Buhari’s return. The source, a senior official in the presidency, who spoke in confidence with our correspondent, simply said: “Barring any last minute change, we are expecting the president back this weekend, probably on Saturday.” It was also gathered that the president had on Tuesday this week cancelled an interview with a foreign media organisation, but may possibly grant an interview in London before the weekend. Another source in the presidency also said that President Buhari “had already packed his bags to leave on Sunday but was advised by his doctors to wait and get results of some tests he conducted before leaving that country.” “I can confidently tell you that Mr. President might still be there (in London) because he has to succumb to the superior knowledge of physicians who conducted medical checks on him, but his mind is in Nigeria,” he added. On rumours that he is incapacitated, the source who preferred not to be named in print because he is not in a position to officially speak on the matter said, “What else do you expect from people? If it were to be other past presidents who go on vacation or medical checkup without official notification, there wouldn’t have been room for such rumour. “But this is a president who is determined to remain transparent in whatever he does in office. Don’t forget that this is not the first time His Excellency is embarking on a vacation outside the shores of the country.” LEADERSHIP recalls that the special adviser on media and publicity to the president, Mr. Femi Adesina, had on Tuesday said the president may return to Nigeria sooner than expected. President Buhari had on Sunday written to the National Assembly, informing lawmakers of his desire to extend his leave in order to complete and receive the results of a series of tests recommended by his doctors. Meanwhile, the Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed observed yesterday that it was ridiculous for anyone to compare President Buhari’s health condition with that of the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua. Mohammed who spoke after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting presided over by Acting President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa was joined by the ministers of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola; Agriculture, Audu Ogbeh and Trade & Investment, Okechukwu Enemelah. His position came two days after Osinbajo had replied those insisting on knowing the health status of the president, that only the president could disclose the status of his health. Echoing the acting president’s position, the information minister insisted that the president was hale and hearty, just as he assured that Buhari was well and that he was absolutely in no danger. Asked if the president’s health came up at FEC yesterday, Mohammed said, “I think I can say without any equivocation that he (Buhari) is well, he is hale and hearty; no question about that. You see, on a lighter note, do you think Mr. President will be ill and we will be here and go about our businesses like this? The minister of power was in Anambra two to three days ago. I was in Ilorin on Monday; all our ministers are busy. But I want to assure you that Mr. President is well and he is absolutely in no danger.” Noting that it was absurd to compare Buhari’s health with that of the late Yar’Adua, the minister said, “I think it was one of the newspapers that said when I was the spokesman of APC I demanded for hourly bulletin of Yar’Adua’s health and that I ought to be giving hourly bulletin as minister of information on the health of the president. “And I said you are comparing apple and oranges. Mr. President is not ill, he is not in hospital and there will be no need to give anybody hourly bulletin about his health – pure and simple. “Mr. President like I said elsewhere is a victim of his own transparency. He was going on leave, he did what the constitution said he should do; he transmitted a letter to the National Assembly and an acting president was put in place and he said, ‘while I am on leave I am going to conduct some medical tests’, which all of us do without announcing it. “And of course, less than six hours after he got there he was pronounced dead by some people. Even those who saw him climb the aircraft in Abuja said he was flown by air ambulance. I can assure you that Mr. President is well, is hale and hearty and no cause for concern. The Acting President speaks to him every day and he told you so.” Asked if it was ideal for the president to go on leave at this time of recession, Mohammed pointed out that the constitution guarantees that. “Absolutely yes; our constitution guarantees that. Did Obama not go on leave; do other presidents not go on leave? Mr. President will go on vacation when he has to go on vacation. Do you know how many ministers have gone on vacation this year? To say Mr. President cannot go on vacation is ridiculous,” he stated. I speak with my brother every day, says Buhari’s only sister The only surviving older sister of President Muhammad Buhari, Hajiya Rakiya, said since January when President Buhari departed to London, she has been speaking with him every day, and that he is in high spirits. She appealed to Nigerians to continue to pray for the well-being of the president, instead of spreading rumours about his health. In an interview with NAN in Daura, Katsina State, the 84-year-old woman said her brother needs the prayers of every Nigerian for him to succeed in the task of addressing the problems facing the nation. She said he as a human being, he is bound to fall ill or even die “at any time his Creator wishes.” “I just returned from the lesser Hajj, and even while in Saudi Arabia, I was communicating with him every day,” Rakiya popularly called Amadodo, told NAN. She said in Saudi Arabia, she communicated with him “every ten hours.” “We were 28 from our mother late Hajiya Zulaihatu who died in 1992, but Buhari was her last born,” she said. A cross-section of the people in the ancient city, who spoke with NAN, expressed displeasure over rumours about the president’s health. Abdulman Daura, north-west organising secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), described the false reports as “baseless and unfounded.” Daura said Buhari is in good health and is only conducting a routine medical checkup in the United Kingdom. He advised the president’s opponent to be always constructive and avoid campaign of hate and calumny. Similarly, Aminu Na-Dari, an ally of the president, said he has also been in constant touch with Buhari since his departure and their conversation did not in any way indicate that he is having any health challenge. A group of students from the School of Health Technology, Daura, described the rumour as unfortunate and asked the National Association of Nigerian Students to issue a statement condemning the rumour. Aminu Mohammed, spokesperson of the students, called on Nigerians to always think and act positive, saying Buhari has started the reform of correcting the ills of the nation, and corruption had started fighting back. He urged Nigerians to continue to pray for the nation and “safe return of Mr President.” Leave PDP Out Of PMB’s Rumoured Death – BoT Chairman The chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Walid Jibrin, yesterday blamed those he described as power seekers of being behind the rumour of President Muhammadu Buhari’s death. Jibrin, who exonerated the PDP from the spread of the rumour, however, advised them to revert to offering prayers of recovery for the president, warning those trying to involve the PDP in the rumour mongering to have a change of heart. He said, “As a good opposition, we shall never engage in wishing President Buhari dead. Instead, we are engaged in special prayers for Mr. President and sincerely sympathise with his family and the Acting President of the country.” Condemning the dangerous speculations on the state of President Buhari’s health, the PDP BoT Chairman said, “The PDP will like to be completely spared out of the rumoured death and speculation of the state of President Muhammadu Buhari’s ill health being spread by some power seekers, who are eager to take over from him. The ill health does not deserve the speculation going on. “PDP believes that it is God that brings and takes life. We equally believe that power belongs to God; he gives it to whom he wills and gives it to whom he likes. Instead of some power seekers engaging themselves in spreading rumour, they should revert to offering prayers for the President. All those trying to involve PDP in wishing the President dead should better stop, as PDP has a good name to maintain.” Culled from http://www.dailyhitng.com/1889-2/

– The presidency says there is no need for President Buhari to pressure himself into returning since there was an acting president in place – Presidential aide Femi Adesina confirmed once again in an interview on NTA on Sunday, February 6, that the doctors now have ample time to examine the president’s health while he could also get adequate rest Why there is no date for Buhari’s return- Presidency President Buhari now has enough time to rest after extending his vacation. The Presidency has explained why there is no date mentioned for the return of President Muhammadu Buhari. Femi Adesina, a special adviser to the president on media and publicity, told the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) in an interview that this was so because there is “no vacuum in government”. Adesina said that since there was Yemi Osinbajo in place as acting president, Buhari could take as much time as needed for an adequate rest. He said: “When he was leaving on Jan. 19 we announced that it was a vacation during which he would also do routine medical check-ups. ”Now, those check-ups have thrown up things that need to be further looked at and that is why he is asking for this extension of the vacation. “The time is not stated and that reason is not far to seek because Mr President transmitted power to his vice, who is now the acting President. “So, he does not need to be under that pressure of time again because there is no vacuum in government, there is an acting president. “Therefore, the doctors can now exhaustively look at him and give him a clean bill of health before he returns home.” Adesina urged Nigerians to desist from rumours of President Buhari’s alleged death because it was ungodly. Instead, he said, Nigerians should always pray for the good health of the president. “My message will be what I also said before, goodwill, let us have goodwill towards our president. “We as human beings must have goodwill towards one another. Any man can be sick; any man can get well; any man can even die, we are mortals. Anybody can die; anybody falls sick can also get well. Why there is no date for Buhari’s return- Presidency President Buhari’s media aides Garba Shehu and Femi Adesina say there is nothing to worry about his health even though they say no date yet for his return. “Therefore, all those who peddle those evil, mischievous, malicious and malevolent rumours on social media need to have a rethink. Instead of all those evil wishes they should have goodwill towards the president.” Recall that President Buhari departed Abuja for the United Kingdom on Thursday, January 19, on a 10-day leave as a part of his annual vacation after formally handing over mantle of leadership of the country to his Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. Meanwhile, another presidential aide Garba Shehu, who is the senior special assistant to the president on media and publicity, has insisted that the president was not in a hospital as being widely circulated but at the Nigerian High Commission in UK. He said: “I just spoke to the president’s personal doctor, and he told me President Buhari is not in any serious condition as to worry about. Former governor of Delta State, James Ibori, who returned to Nigeria Saturday after serving jail term in the United Kingdom for corruption, has met with the head of the State Security Service, Lawal Daura. The meeting held in Abuja shortly after Mr. Ibori arrived the federal capital from London where he was recently released from jail. The director general of SSS, Mr. Daura, confirmed the meeting to journalists. “He met me for a short debriefing session and way forward; also, to welcome him back to his fatherland. We are also meeting soon to discuss issues of interest affecting the nation,” he said. An official of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, had earlier told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the British Airways conveying Mr. Ibori touched down in the airport early in the morning. The official, pleading anonymity, said the former governor was picked up by some people to an undisclosed place. He also said he could not confirm the identity of the people that picked him up from the airport. Mr. Ibori was recently freed from prison in the UK after serving a jail term. He was convicted of corruption and money laundering on April 17, 2012, after five years of trial. The Southwark Crown Court, UK, sentenced him to 13 years in prison while his houses, luxury cars and other property items were confiscated. The judge, however, ruled that Mr. Ibori would spend half of the jail term which is six and half years. Born on Aug. 4, 1959, Mr. Ibori was the governor of Delta from May 29, 1999 to May 29, 2007 on the platform of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Source: http://www.dailyhitng.com/1816-2/
