mascot87: Even as a man, it doesn't look okay to be single at 35 to 40 years not to talk of woman
That's what the society promotes. The truth is many people now realize that being single is better for their well-being. Don't let anyone to pressure you.
Gerrard59: Yet housing is expensive, and there is a severe shortage. How does the problem get solved since one of the major components of construction is very expensive?
Not while housing is expensive. The govt allowed the importation of food, so prices reduced. The same govt allowed the importation of derivatives of cassava into the country, and there was a corresponding decrease in cassava prices within the country because the major buyers/off-takers (the pharmaceutical industry) bought imported products. The pharma industry lobbied for the importation.
Nigeria, which produces cement and has huge limestone deposits, is meaningless when cement prices are very high which result in high rents. Allow the importation of cement to ease prices so the wider population can construct more affordably. Countries do this to ease prices, just as they restrict exports for national security purposes. Our govt has done the same with food and plans to do the same with eggs by attracting an almost $1BN investment from the Chinese. Why should it be different with cement?
Nice take on the subject. The reason for the high cost of housing is not only because of cement. There are many factors but cement price is one of them. Dangote is a dominant player in the industry. It controls over 60% of the market and influence prices and economic activities in that industry. When you control over 60% of the market you have monopoly power which is bad for the Nigerian economy. The government can encourage other investors in that industry. My initial post was for the government to create a level playing field for all investors. During Obj regime he was favoring Dangote to the detriment of other players. When you favour some investors and allow others to die, it destroys the economy. Nigeria can have one of the cheapest cement prices in the world through such reforms and not through importation.
Bros, this is either trolling or sarcasm, or you don't understand what you have there.
P.S. A free market economy allows importation. Nigeria is not self-sufficient in cement production, else the price should not be at its current price.
Again I'll be clear. The government should not allow importation of cement. Whoever encourages that has no idea of that industry. FYI: Nigeria holds one of the largest reserves of limestone in Africa. Limestone is exported. Also understand words based on context. Free market doesn't mean free trade. A country can operate a free market domestically while maintaining regulated international trade.
Gerrard59: Tell the gov't to allow the importation of cement and build public housing, then watch house rents fall.
This belief that govt should control prices is the root cause of our poverty. Govt should not control prices, especially in an ethnically heterogeneous country like Nigeria.
No. Government should not allow importation for products that the country can be self-sufficient. Importation is one of the major problems of the Nigerian economy. They should promote a free market economy. The Obasanjo administration killed Ibeto cement to favor Dangote. We're still suffering from those actions. Those policies destroy the economy and encourage monopoly. Nigeria should be pushing for competitive market policies.
Bluntemperor: Mr Man,you have not said anything! • So,what is the Peculiar Problem in Power-Sector that Cannot Be Fixed, •And what is the Peculiar Problem in the Refineries that Cannot Be Fixed , Afterall Dangote Refinery Is Working, while your own by NNPC is Dead ? -Is a question ⁉️
The peculiar problem in the sector is while it has not been fixed till date. There have been about 10 ministers of power from 1999 till date and there have been no significant improvement. Dangote refinery is a private business and it has proved that the government is a bad manager. In 2013 the power sector was privatized and since then it keeps getting worse. Have you asked yourself why is power getting worse under private hands? Private companies handle the generation of power and the distribution of power. State governments and can also get involved and even create operators. What the power sector needs is full decentralization across the entire power valve chain while the FG can be the regulator and create the environment for the industry to thrive.
dequir: Don't mind nairalanda1. His mantra is increase tax, increase tarrifs always. He has nothing else to advocate to improve the lot of the poor masses that inhabit the country.
Where will the miserable and mostly unemployed citizens get the money to pay his beloved taxes and tariffs, and where are the saints who will judiciously manage the contributed money in a country filled with criminal treasury managers? He never consider that.
That's one of the downsides of privatization. I don't know if you were aware of the fuel black market industry in Nigeria. That industry is dead and gone. There will always be fuel but what you can buy determines how much you have. Businesses are after profits. If they can't make profits in the long term, you can't get the service. Think about telecommunications. The investors in the power sector are not investing. What do you think is the reason?
Gentlelife50: You keep repeating this same things and jargons all the time, they have been increasing tarrifs over the years. Stop supporting these incompetent people to keep fleecing the masses, as long as you keep appointing incompetent and corrupt people if you like increase it to the highest money known to man it won't still work. Someone like Bath Nnaji was making significant progress then, but because of the corruption in the system he was bullied out yet u keep shouting increase tarif up and down. Also when Mr fashola was appointed as pwer minister all he did was keep increasing tarrifs all the time did it solve anything? Rest and stop reposting these same thing all the time, encourage them to look for competent and reduce corruption and see things work.
That's part of the reason but not the only reason. Most people in Nigeria don't know that power was privatize since 2013. The FG handed over 11 distribution companies and 6 generation companies to private investors. The goal was to improve the power sector. One of the investors that I was expecting to win failed the bid. Till now what's the result? Nobody complains about the telecoms industry, because it's in private hands. The government should be a regulator and should fully decentralized the power sector. The major problem was how it was privatized, some of us complained then about the process and here we are today. The investors didn't invest and grow the industry. Power was better with the government than these private investors. The question is why? Now state governments can also get involved in the power industry. The FG should hands off completely and create policies that will enable growth in the sector.
Why must we measure and rate our obligations in dollar?
When you have external debt, they're evaluated in USD. When I borrow USD from the bank, they evaluate my debt in USD and When I borrow NGN, it's evaluated in NGN.
FutureFocus: Nigeria is like a business center to our leaders, just milk the masses, tax them left right and center with zero electricity, just imagine a nation who has the opportunity to sell electricity to 250 million households , and make good money from it, imagine how much the government will generate from that, but no, you don’t care because you prefer to collect duty tax on solar panel, you are not willing to revive the productive labor market because you prefer to tax imports and remain unproductive , It’s a shame
Power generation and distribution was privatized in 2013. The question should be why are private investors not interested in investing in the sector? Nobody blames government for the telecommunications sector since it was privatized. One of the major problems is that Power theft is high in Nigeria. It's also capital intensive. Energy is expensive. The government has a role but it should be private sector driven.
anonimi: Many thanks for explaining the context of WB statistics on global comparisons of poverty.
Would you say that PDP gave us a better economy than APC has done for the past 11 years, as this is the issue at stake here?
A better economy anchored on deregulation and privatisation policies of 16 years.
Most of the privatization in Nigeria was carried out before 2015. Over 100+ state enterprises were privatized or concessioned. The question is what is the state of these enterprises today?
Nitel/Mtel Power generation and distribution Steel and heaven industry (Delta Steel) Banking assets Cement and manufacturing Ports
Between 2015 and now. There have been very few privatization of government enterprises. Some proposals are in the works.
While I don't understand the essence of the comparison because most of the privatization was done before 2015, I would say the privatization of government assets have been a failure in Nigeria.
Treadway: when push came to shove you chose to sit on the fence. Fair enough.
Easy for me to say that based on the question posed by anonimi comparatively the PDP years were better, using every metric. Not about defending one side, it's simply about answering a simple question. Not hard at all. Line-up of three girls, which one is finer? You can't/couldn't choose, but it's fine.
Many people don't understand how these statistics and data works. It's not a simplistic measure. The data used by the world bank measures poverty globally not what poverty actually looks like inside a country. When you convert the $3/day threshold, thus translates to $15/day for a family of 5. In many places in Nigeria that income would not typically be considered poverty. $450 a month is about 630k a month. Who would say that such a family living in Kebbi state is living in extreme poverty?
It's just a statistical tool for global comparison not a realistic measure of living standards within countries.
It rose from $1.90 to $2.15 and now $3 It's good to understand these data for what they are but 99% of Nigerians would not understand.
SixSeven: I dedicate this video to Bwala and the APC minions. If you don't have it, you don't have it. Friendly advice to Bwala, as a lawyer, you can do better. IYKYK
This is Mehdi Hassan vs people that are against his ideas or opinions for 1 hour 40 mins👇 1 Progressive vs 20 Far-Right Conservatives (ft. Mehdi Hasan)
So what are you talking about? You should do better as a lawyer when attending the trials.
There's no Nigerian politician that can go head to head with Mendi. He drilled Okonjo then and she was humbled. The guy is refined and I've been a subscriber of his newsletter. The average Nigerian is not different from Daniel Bwala. They don't accept facts.
SarcasticWords: Switzerland’s Defence Minister, Germany’s Vice-Chancellor and Finance Minister, The President of spain.
These men must be terrorist sympathizers.
I say so because according to some nairaland geopolitics experts and professors, anyone that condemns US & Israel strike on the Islamic Iranian Regime must be a sympathizer of terrorists.
You won't blame most people. They don't know the origin of the crises. US and Iran has a long history. The average Nigerian is not different from Daniel Bwala when presented with facts.
dominique: From what I understand about matchmaking platforms, both men and women register profiles and seek for partners. Even the dating and meet up zone section on Nairaland has men seeking partners. How come its only this one's platform has only women looking for men for marriage?
Anything for the views. Anything to seek attention. That's the trend so she's just making her ends meet by engaging her followers.
cunny88: But then we should have some benefits as citizens of an oil producing and oil refining country.
Initially, the excuse was that refineries were not working and we had to import refined crude, what is the excuse now
There are many benefits that you get. The price is relatively cheaper compared to other countries. Public education is cheap. The country can no longer increase its debt. Things will get worse so it's better every one adjust. Always remember that the world runs on economies.
20% of global oil passes through the Strait of Hormuz. We get it.
But here are the facts:
1. Almost all of Nigeria's crude oil is sweet crude.
2. Dangote Refinery has the capacity to process 650,000 barrels of crude oil per day.
3. Nigeria's daily consumption of crude oil is 327,000 barrels per day (or 52 million liters per day).
4. This means Dangote Refinery can process 100% of Nigeria's daily consumption locally.
So for the defenders of fuel price increase, explain to us why there is fuel price increase at Nigeria's petrol stations.
Before you come with Canada argument, let me preempt you: Most of Canada’s crude is heavy crude and almost half of the 16 refineries can’t refine heavy crude, so the crude oil needs to be exported to the U.S. for refining. Because it is exported abroad, global oil price will affect it: you export at a high price due to demand, you import at a higher price.
Oil is an international product. The government doesn't own all the oil. Let market forces decide the price. It's simple you reduce your demand.
A worthy man or a great husband is not determined by his sexual conduct alone. Any lady that rates a man based on his sexual weakness alone will definitely end up with horrible men.
The only perceived wrongdoing I know many good and wonderful married men commit against their wives is "having extramarital affairs" or keeping mistresses outside their marriage, and why I don't usually see this as a big deal is because that is how every sexually active man was created from birth; to want to explore or mate with other women he finds attractive, it's a natural deficiency in all sexually active men.
The few sexually active men (if any exist) that stay sexually faithful to one partner till death are those that did it out of extreme commitment to religious doctrines and those that lacked the privilege, the opportunities and financial capacity to explore.
So long as a man respects his wife, treats her well, takes very good care of her and the kids, takes full responsibility of the family and dependents, respects himself by being absolutely discreet with his affairs, I see no big deal in him having extramarital affairs responsibly, only his maker and God can judge him on the last day, thank you all for your attention to this matter
This is a very faulty reasoning but I'm not surprised because it's regurgitated in different forms.
The claim that all men are “created” to cheat is not biology — it’s justification.
Yes, men can feel attraction to multiple women. But attraction is not the same as action.
Human beings are not animals ruled by impulse. We have: Self-control, moral reasoning, and Empathy. The ability to choose long-term stability over short-term pleasure
If “natural desire” excused behavior, then anger would justify violence, and greed would justify theft. Society exists because adults control impulses.
Plenty of men feel attraction and still choose loyalty. That proves it is a decision, not a biological destiny.
The claim that faithful men are either extremely religious, or too poor/unattractive to cheat is insulting to men and tells a lot about your personality.
Many financially successful, attractive, socially powerful men remain faithful. Not because they lack options — but because they value integrity and emotional peace
I always say it loudly. The family defines society - if a man cannot keep to a simple commitment to a woman, how can the same man fulfill political promises to society?
In environments where men are praised for cheating, more will cheat. In environments where integrity is respected, more men remain faithful.
This shows its cultural conditioning — not biological inevitability.
Behavior is shaped by upbringing, peer influence, and cultural norms. I have many male friends who are financially successful and stick with their wives. I tell everyone extra marital affairs is expensive and not worth it.
Please, let's reject such lazy, backward thinking in favor of accountability and open communication.

What you wrote sounds heavy and painful, and you don’t have to carry it alone. How can I reach out?
SmartPolician: When China is trying to teach America technology, it's unfortunate that you people always use America as a yardstick for what is right and wrong.
So, because there are power outages in parts of New York, it is okay for us to experience the same? Make I no talk wetin dey my mind.
You have smart in your name so one should expect you to be smart. I'm not cut out for China vs US. Power outages are a universal issue affecting both developed and developing countries. China also suffer from power outages despite having the highest power generation in the world. One of the causes of power outage is weather. Nigeria has a lot of issues facing the power sector from load shedding to aging grid infrastructure. So why is it surprising that power outage can occur in bad weather?
SixSeven: Because it's what the ordinary people feel that matters more than statistics. I'm not saying that stats is bad, I'm just saying that people only feel numbers when those numbers are affecting their lives directly. Any other thing is just economic gymnastics. The ordinary man on the street does not need Macroeconomics 101 to know if his life has improved in a year or not.
My point was people misuse numbers. They don't fully understand what certain measurements mean. People use GDP alot but it's not a direct measure of human welfare neither is it a measure of economic wealth. For welfare of citizens we use the beyond GDP agenda which evaluate different metrics. Economic indicators provide insight into a country's economy. It's a different argument when we talk about the welfare of citizens.
nairalanda1: I once suggested a long time ago, online, that we should bury our wires for power supply purposes.
The responses I got suggested that 1) it would be too expensive 2) it would make isolating a fault on the line much more difficult.
Also, as for our archaic power system, that's easy. We don;'t pay a cost reflective tarrif for power, so the power companies cannot afford the massive upgrades they need to do to fix things. Government could do it, but it would involve borrowing at least 20 trillion yearly for the next ten years. And then the loans have to be paid.
Ministry of power may be corrupt, but since the discos and gencos were created, about the only thing they have direct control over is the transmisson system, and maybe rural electrification. And then oversight of the discos and gencos, and that's it. They don't directly run how the power is supplied. Since 2013 self.
Power lines are not usually buried except in cities. In the Nigeria power space, the government have proven to be more efficient than the private investors. Power is expensive and that's why the private investors can't do much. The other thing is the average citizen can't pay a cost reflective tariff, that's why the government subsidize power. They need to further decentralized the power infrastructure in the country.
pocohantas: I don't need to ask. It is what is obtainable in Nigeria. Go to other countries and experience their engineering or take over IKEDC and overhaul it with your superior knowledge.
You're very smart. People claim to know too much in the country but they lack knowledge and understanding. In Brooklyn, some areas have been without light for 3 days. Power go out in many areas of the US when the weather is bad. In Nigeria the submission given above is plausible and brilliant.
Tenrack: indeed. My BF sing pass this tune na. For him own case e Sabi women matter die. Babe of seven years wey e date. Wey do a lot for am as well, spend on am broke up with him. I told him that she's already seeing another guy, Baba no believe say another guy dey the picture. They were squatting together and na thr babe get the place. He left her and returned later to take some of his stuff.
Only to meet another guy there wey no even fine or tall reach am. The dude just get money and connections sort of. This girl lashed out at him for showing up without consent. She later reported him to the police. Had him tortured and arrested and lied that he was blackmailing her with nudes.
She lied that my guy beat her up. True they had a scuffle around 2013. When he hit her with anger. Do you know this girl had that picture saved in her gallery all this time? She showed to the police. Dem beat and torture my guy. He has to bail himself with 150k.
This one na real life story. Na my person e happen to. If you know as him and this girl tighr you no go ever believe say she go fit do such. Me I'm still shocked till now.
You can never be relaxed around women of these days. They are only loyal to their feelings. If you like no hear. Go dey put hope for one girl.
I'm not refuting the experience of your friend. Men and women disappoint in relationships. Most of the men that complain about women are not better than the women they complain about. You can imagine his friend having sex with a women the first day and in his house. How can he attract responsible women? I have men and female friends but I seldom hear of infidelity because I control my circle of friends. Most of my friends are married or in healthy relationships. If I should count 10, about 1 goes south.
He's correct. You attract your like. Women are different just as men are different. Your mother, sisters and other female relatives are different from others. Imagine the kind of friends that you have. He wants to sleep with a women he's meeting for the first time, is he a prostitute? That's very absurd. That's the reason why you also attract such kind of women, because you have irresponsible friends. When you move with the right people, possess self control, and be focused. You will meet the right kind of women.
Falana go wait for 600 years to collect that money.
You can always ask questions for what you don't understand. Meta is registered in Nigeria and has a physical presence. Meta failed to comply with NDPC and also failed to appoint a DPCO. It has also not submitted its NDPR report to the regulatory agency. They can go to a higher court or pay the fine.
If she has been paying this high VAT, why is she now crying out loudly?
Some people just support evil because it's done by their people.
That's why she's an influencer. She wants attraction. Everyone pays VAT in Nigeria. The biscuit, the recharge card, the phone, you pay VAT for it. Now, you have learned something new.
