SportsRonaldo Is First Sport Star To 50m Facebook ‘likes’ by ryback(op): 12:04pm On Oct 17, 2012
Cristiano Ronaldo has become the first sports star on the planet to get 50 million 'Likes' on Facebook.

The Portuguese superstar has his fair share of detractors - many see him as fantastically arrogant and irredeemably smug, traits which are only exacerbated by constant comparisons to Barcelona's relatively humble genius, Lionel Messi.

But it seems that plenty of you out there forgive those foibles and absolutely love the Real Madrid forward - or at least, you like him enough to click a small icon on a social networking website. His tally means that one in 20 people who use Facebook have 'liked' the 27-year-old.

Ronaldo is 11.5 million 'likes' ahead of his nearest sporting rival, Messi, on 38.5m, while David Beckham is third on 21 million.

But it is Ronaldo who is the only one giving the world's other biggest stars a run for their money. He has three million more 'likes' than Justin Bieber (46.9m) and Katy Perry (47.9m), for example, but trails overall leader Rihanna. The Barbadian singer is locked in a close battle for top spot, apparently: Eminem beat her to the 60m follower mark last month, but Rihanna is now ahead on 61.8m against the rapper's 61.5m.

Shakira (55.2m), Lady Gaga (53.3m) and Michael Jackson (52m) are the only other people above Ronaldo, unless you count Harry Potter on 50.9m.

Fourth on the list of sports stars is Michael Jordan, on 20.5m, while ronaldo's Real Madrid team-mate Kaka is fifth on 18.7m.

Kobe Bryant (14.1m), WWE wrestler John Cena (13.6m) and LeBron James (12.5m) take the next three spots, with Roger Federer next on 11.7m just half a million ahead of 10th-placed Rafa Nadal.

Maria Sharapova is the highest-placed woman in 13th place on 8.4m, one place behind Usain Bolt (9.4m) and just ahead of Sachin Tendulkar (8.3m) and Steven Gerrard (7.5m).

EntertainmentFlorida Man Dies After Winning Cockroach-eating Contest by ryback(op): 4:35pm On Oct 09, 2012
Edward Archbold was, according to those who met him on Friday night, the life of the party – a bit of a showoff who was up for anything, even a giant cockroach-eating contest.

He won. And then, tragically, he died.

Now police from Deerfield Beach, Fla., about 40 miles north of Miami, are investigating the death of the 32-year-old, who on Facebook went by Edward William Barry.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to the Broward Sheriff’s Office, Archbold, of West Palm Beach, and several other contestants signed up to eat a variety of insects at Ben Siegel Reptiles in Deerfield Beach. After eating dozens of giant cockroaches, Archbold was declared the winner of an ivory-ball python. (The prizes, Archbold indicated on his Facebook page that night, were less significant than the glory.)

He had also entered a superworm-eating contest earlier in the night.

But after winning, Archbold felt sick and started vomiting. He then collapsed in the store and was later pronounced dead. The medical examiner’s office is conducting tests to determine a cause of death, according to the sheriff’s office statement.

On Facebook, Ben Siegel Reptiles wrote that staff met Archbold the night of the Midnight Madness sale: “We all liked him right away. All of us here at Ben Siegel Reptiles are sad that we will not get to know Eddie better, for in the short time we knew him, he was very well liked by all.”

In the comments beneath the statement, the reptile store wrote that the prize “now belongs to his estate.”

In another Facebook comment, an attorney claiming to represent Ben Siegel Reptiles wrote that contest participants had signed waivers accepting their participation in this “unique and unorthodox contest.”

“The consumption of insects is widely accepted throughout the world, and the insects presented as part of the contest were taken from an inventory of insects that are safely and domestically raised in a controlled environment as food for reptiles,” wrote attorney Luke Lirot.

No other contestants felt sick, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said.

And Archbold seemed to be doing all right earlier in the night, according to his own account on Facebook. He took photos of the superworms and wrote: " Also side note im NOW in a super worm eating comp now.......what ever the hell a super worm is?"

Eating the bugs yielded valuable rewards, according to the store's Facebook page: “Eat the most bugs in 4 minutes, win the ball morph. That’s it. Oh yeah, any vomiting is an automatic DQ,” the advertisement stated. “Eat the most crickets, win a male lesser. Eat the most superworms, win a female orange belly. Eat the most discoid roaches, win a female graphite sired ivory!”

Michael Adams, a professor of entomology at the University of California, Riverside, told The Associated Press that he has never heard of someone dying after eating roaches.

"Unless the roaches were contaminated with some bacteria or other pathogens, I don't think that cockroaches would be unsafe to eat," Adams said. "Some people do have allergies to roaches but there are no toxins in roaches or related insects."

Meanwhile, Archbold's friends took to his Facebook page to remember him. Wrote one: "This goes out to one of the most funnest, craziest, and most energetic person I have ever met!!! I will never ever forget u Eddie... I don't think anyone could!!"

HealthNew Blood Test To Spot Breast Cancer Early by ryback(op): 12:33pm On Oct 08, 2012
WOMEN could be spared the inconvenience of mammograms in the future and instead have a simple annual blood test to check for early signs of breast cancer.

British researchers are developing a blood test that scans for telltale warning signs in their DNA, which could be even more accurate than x-rays at spotting the disease early.

They are now starting a trial at Charing Cross Hospital in London, and hope to take blood from 500 women who have been asked back after shadows were spotted on their mammograms.

The researchers will then compare the DNA in the blood of women who go on to be diagnosed with breast cancer with those found to be free of the disease, to see what DNA markers are consistent. They have already found some DNA markers that indicate when breast cancer is present.

Should this first human trial be successful, they will start a new one looking at whether the blood test could be used as a breast cancer screening tool for all middle-aged and older women.

Dr Jacqui Shaw, principal investigator from Leicester University, said: “This exciting research means we could one day have a blood test that detects the very early signs of cancer, meaning women could have an annual blood test rather than breast screening.”

If everything went well, it could be available in five years, she suggested.

"I think this approach has the potential to impact significantly on screening in quite a short time," Dr Shaw added.

The study, a collaboration between Leicester University and Imperial College London, is being funded by Cancer Research UK.

Professor Charles Coombes, from Imperial, said: “When a woman has breast cancer we can tell by the DNA in their blood.

“But what we’re trying to find out in our study is how early the signs of breast cancer show up in a blood test.”

Early indications are that the test could pick up cancer earlier than identifying lumps by x-ray.

He continued: “By looking at blood samples of women who have breast cancer diagnosed through screening we can see if the cancer is already showing in their blood.”

The blood test could also help doctors tailor breast cancer treatments for individual patients, he explained.

“It could provide the clinician with some idea of what genetic abnormalities are occurring in the cancer, and that will help the clinician treat the patient more specifically and with less toxicity,” he said.

Breast cancer kills about 12,000 women a year in Britain, while there are some 40,000 new cases annually.

The researchers are also looking at applying the technique to lung and bowel cancer.

HealthGet A Flatter Stomach In 24 Hours by ryback(op): 3:33pm On Oct 02, 2012
Follow the Slim Down's bloat beating top tips for a flatter stomach over night…..

1. Curb the curries
Spicy foods can increase the speed with that food travels through the gut, encouraging wind production and bloating.

2. Pick up a pineapple
Fresh pineapple contains bromelain, a protein-digesting enzyme, so try some after a heavy meal. Fennel may also help by combating flatulence.

3. Treat yourself to tea
Peppermint and chamomile teas are particularly good at easing indigestion and bloating. Green teas and teas made with fresh mint can be particularly effective too.

4. Drink It down
If your bloated tummy is linked to your time of the month try drinking more water. Research shows that bloating and water retention are often linked to dehydration so make sure you sip down at least eight glasses of water a day.

5. Chew on it
Eat slowly with your mouth closed, to avoid gulping down air along with your food. Chew each mouthful thoroughly and sit up straight at the table to help improve digestion.

6. Start grazing
Eat small, regular meals and avoid a pattern of eating little all day then having a large late meal.

7. Put your best foot forward
Take regular exercise. Research shows even a short 20-30 minute brisk walk four times a week can improve your bowel function.

8. Have an apple a day
Snack on fresh fruit instead of salty snacks such as nuts or crisps. Too much salt in the diet can increase water retention especially in the stomach area where as the high water and fibre content of fresh fruit will have the reverse effect.

Health7 Specialized Sleep Solutions by ryback(op): 1:38pm On Sep 27, 2012
You’re trying to get a good night’s sleep. You pour your last cup of coffee for the day approximately five minutes after you get up in the morning, and your bedtime routine is so calming, it could put a wired four-year-old into a coma. You banish worries by writing them down in a special notebook you keep by the bed, right next to your warm milk and drug-free, homeopathic, fragrance-based sleep aids. So why do you still find yourself staring at the ceiling? It’s time to listen to what some unexpected experts have to say. Their jobs don’t necessarily include long hours in a laboratory studying sleep problems, but what they know about a multitude of other irritants—stomach ills and back pain and windows in need of shades—just might put you out for the night.

1. Rethink Your Mattress

“You don’t need a really expensive mattress or one with a lot of space-age bells and whistles. There’s really only one good study on mattresses, and it confirmed the Goldilocks theory: Most people prefer a mattress that’s not too hard and not too soft. So look for something medium firm.” — Andrew Hecht, MD, orthopedic surgeon and co-chief of spine surgery at Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York, New York. “If you can, try the type of mattress you’re considering in a hotel or at a friend’s house. Some stores may even let you sleep on it for a night. Some mattress companies will also give you a full refund if you don’t like it after a month.” — Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan, cofounder of the Apartment Therapy website.

2. Stick to a Single Pillow

"I’m not a fan of sleeping with two pillows if you’re back sleeper because it makes your upper back curve and strains the neck and back. If you need to sleep up high for medical reasons, get a wedge and put your pillow on it.” — Karen Erickson, a chiropractor in New York, New York.

3. Nod Off With the Right Scent

“My research has found that any new smell, even one associated with relaxation, like lavender, can make you feel more alert and vigilant. You’re better off with a scent that makes you feel safe and comfortable. There really is something to cuddling up with your spouse’s undershirt.” — Pamela Dalton, PhD, odor-perception expert and sensory psychologist at Monell Chemical Senses Center, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
HealthSix Tips For Whiter Teeth by ryback(op): 3:59pm On Sep 25, 2012
Your 32 teeth not only help you to talk and chew, they can make or break your appearance. Read on to find out what you can do to keep your pearly whites sparkling.

1. Go on a White-Teeth Diet

What goes into your mouth shows up on your teeth. So if you’re drinking a lot of red wine or black tea, or smoking cigarettes, expect the results to show up as not-so-pearly whites. Other culprits include colas, gravies and dark juices. The bottom line: if it’s dark before you put it in your mouth, it will probably stain your teeth. Step one: brush your teeth immediately after having foods that stain. Step two: regularly use a good bleaching agent from your dentist. Step three: be conscious of tooth-staining foods and drinks, and have them only when a toothbrush is around. If not, have an apple for dessert.

2. Hum While Brushing Your Teeth

The ideal amount of time to brush to get all the bacteria-packed plaque out is at least two minutes. Use your watch or keep a timer in the bathroom and set it for 2 minutes. Or find a tune that lasts about two minutes and hum it to the end.

3. Grip Your Toothbrush Like a Pencil

Does your toothbrush look as if it’s been used to clean the car? If so, you’re probably brushing too hard. Contrary to what some scrub-happy people think, brushing with force is not the best way to remove plaque. The best way is to place your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle against your gums and gently move it in a circular motion, rather than a back-and-forth motion. Grip the toothbrush like a pencil so you will not scrub too hard.

4. Drink a Cup of Tea Every Day

Flavonoids and other ingredients in tea seem to prevent harmful bacteria from sticking to teeth, and block the production of a type of sugar that contributes to cavities. Tea also contains high amounts of fluoride.

5. Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly

Throw away your toothbrush or change the head of your electric toothbrush at least every two to three months. Otherwise, you are just transferring bacteria to your mouth.

6. Use Alcohol-Free Mouthwash

Most over-the-counter mouthwashes have too much alcohol, which can dry out the tissues in your mouth, making them more susceptible to bacteria. Some studies even suggest a link between mouthwashes containing alcohol to and an increased risk of oral cancer. To be safe, be a teetotaller when it comes to choosing a mouthwash.

EducationOshiomhole Sends Top Government Officials To Classrooms by ryback(op): 2:58pm On Sep 24, 2012
The Edo State Ministry of Education has mandated top government officials such as Commissioners, Permanent Secretaries, Chairmen of Boards and Directors to take up teaching classes in public schools to assess their level of needs and help supervise their teachers.

The Commissioner in charge of the Ministry, Mr. Ekpenisi Omorotionwan who disclosed this at Idia College, a public secondary school in Benin City where he taught Government in a senior class said the move was for supervision purpose and to ensure that teachers do their jobs well.

"Upon resumption the government introduced the executive teaching scheme which led the commissioner, Permanent Secretary, Directors, Assistant Directors, Chief Inspectors of Education, Chairmen of Boards under the Ministry like the SUBEB, PPEB back to the classroom".

He also said that the idea which could see the State Governor teaching a class soon was to let public school heads such as Principals and Vice-Principals realise that they were primarily employed as teachers who must teach classes regularly in spite of their managerial positions.

According to Omorotionwan, "No teacher is employed as Principal or Vice Principal. They were all employed first as teachers, and the more you teach the better you become", adding that "the point has been made that if the Commissioner can go to the classroom no one has the excuse not to teach".

PoliticsBritish Trust Fund Accused Of Financing Boko Haram by ryback(op): 10:38am On Sep 10, 2012
A member of the British House of Lords, David Alton, has accused a London-based charity organisation, Al-Muntada Trust Fund, of financing the operations of Boko Haram.

According to the London-based Guardian newspaper, the parliamentarian raised concerns about the Al-Muntada Trust Fund’s activities with Foreign Office Minister Lord Howell in July, as well as with the United Kingdom’s Charity Commission and the Metropolitan police.

However, the paper, in its publication yesterday, quoted the country’s Charity Commission as stating that while they are aware of concerns regarding Al-Muntada’s affiliations with Boko Haram, they were unable to confirm whether those concerns are directly related to the London-based Al-Muntada, since there are several other charity organisations registered under the same name.
Nevertheless, the London-based Al-Muntada is notorious for being a platform for radical clerics, the Guardian reported.

The paper said the State Security Service (SSS) also has concerns about Al-Muntada allegedly funding Boko Haram.

The trust’s website shows that Al-Muntada Al-Islami parades itself as an independent organisation initially established in the UK to cater to the needs of the local community with a number of centres around the world, each delivering need-based projects through local initiatives.

Some of these projects include: feeding programmes for some of the poorest people in the world, educational programmes to tackle illiteracy, building of water wells, and community outreach programmes.

A call to the number found on the organisation’s website rang without response and an email enquiry was not immediately responded to.

The spokesman of the SSS, Marylin Ogar, told THISDAY she does not discuss security issues on the phone but promised to speak with a correspondent.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga)Barca Want To Give Messi A Pay Rise by ryback(op): 2:36pm On Sep 07, 2012
Two years ago Leo Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo were the two highest paid players in the world. People still think of them as being the best, along with Iniesta, but they are no longer the biggest earners by a long shot. They currently occupy ninth and tenth place in the ranking, overtaken by players like Etoo, Ibrahimovic, Agüero, Rooney, etc...

Barcelona is well aware of the fact and knows it has to do right by Messi. It was with this good intention in mind that the club made it known a new contract was being prepared. Leo's current contract with Barcelona expires in 2016 and the club would like to extend it for two or three years more and, above all, increase his salary.

Another factor to take into account is the increase in the tax rate which has gone up from 49 to 56%. This means that this year Messi will earn a million and a half less than he did last year.

Leo had previously signed a €10.5 million contract, plus add-ons, which was expressed in such a way that half of any bonuses for winning titles would be added to his fixed salary. For this reason, after winning the La Liga and the Champions League in the 2010/11 season, his earnings rose to €11.5 million. Under the new tax regulations this amount would shrink to only €10 million.

The aim of the club is to draw up a new contract that will keep the player at Barça until he's 32 or 33, as Messi has expressed his desire to retire in Argentina.

PoliticsWorld Bank Loans, Grants To Nigeria Hit N696.92bn by ryback(op): 3:09pm On Sep 04, 2012
The total commitment of the World Bank to Nigeria in loans and grants has hit $4.5bn (N696.92bn), the Country Director of the bank, Ms. Marie Francoise Marie-Nelly, has said.

Marie-Nelly said this at the inauguration of the Polychlorinated Biphenyl Management Project in Abuja on Monday.

The World Bank country director, who was represented at the event by an official of the bank, Mr. Bandrul Haque, also said the PCB project would gulp a total of N2.87bn with counterpart funds from both the Federal Government and the Global Environmental Fund.

She said, “The bank has a diverse portfolio in Nigeria of over $4.5bn in loans and grants, including long-standing and broad involvement in the power sector that will allow for synergies to be developed.

Marie-Nelly said the bank’s focus was to address development of programmes to phase out the production and use of toxic chemicals, identification of alternative technologies, and encourage the safe disposal of existing toxic stockpiles.

The PCB project is for implementation over a four-year period to December 2015. While the GEF has provided $6.3m, the Federal Government will provide an additional $12.2m to eliminate environmental and health risks posed by PCBs.

According to the World Bank boss, environmental and health risks come from the release of PCBs from active and decommissioned electrical equipment in Power Holding Company of Nigeria facilities as well as from other industries that have PCB stocks such as oil refineries, airports and textile mills.

Through timely implementation of the PCB project, environmental and health risks in Nigeria could be reduced substantially by safe disposal of the existing stockpiles and development of a management system for safe disposal of future toxic wastes, she said.

Marie-Nelly added that the project was targeted to safely dispose 3,000 tonnes of PCB oils and 5,000 tonnes of PCB contaminated equipment.

Health10 Health Tips For Lazy People by ryback(op): 10:26am On Sep 03, 2012
Lazy health tip 1: Build exercise into your routine
Many of us think we need to spend hours working up a sweat at the gym to stay fit. However, while intense workouts are beneficial, they can also be extremely off-putting and are not strictly necessary. Research shows that regular daily activity could be more effective than sporadic workouts, so rather than allotting a specific “exercise time” a day, try peppering your day with gentle bits of activity such as taking the stairs instead of the lift, doing the housework, or walking to the shops at lunch.
Lazy health tip 2: Make your own ready meals
We all know that eating fresh, homemade produce is good for us, yet many of us are far too tired to be whipping up a culinary masterpiece after a hard day’s work. However, rather than falling into the trap of relying on shop bought ready meals which may be lacking in nutritional value, try making your own healthy versions instead. By cooking up healthy meals in large batches at the weekend, you can be sure to have plenty of healthy choices in your freezer for those days when you’re too lazy to cook.
Lazy health tip 3: Get a pet to improve your health
If you want big health results without making a big effort, getting a pet could be the way to go. Multiple research studies have shown that pet owners have improved physical and mental health, including lowered blood pressure, better ability to cope with adverse life effects, and lowered stress levels. For those who need encouragement to up their fitness levels, getting a pet dog may also provide you with that push you need to get out and get active.
Lazy health tip 4: Exercise while watching TV
Vegging out in front of the TV can be the quickest way to pile on the pounds. However, couch potatoes needn’t despair; there are plenty of ways to keep healthy and active in front of the screen. To boost your fitness while watching TV, try squeezing a mini-workout into each commercial break. From situps to skipping or a quick run up and down stairs, there are plenty of ways to introduce activity into your TV-watching schedule. The golden rule is simply to keep moving, with research suggesting that even fidgeting while sitting can burn up to 350 extra calories a day.
Lazy health tip 5: Do a crossword puzzle
If you really can’t find the energy to put yourself through a workout, take the opportunity instead to work on another area of your body – your brain. Boosting your mental health is just as important as improving your physical wellbeing, and luckily this can be done from the comfort of your couch. Research has found that frequent participation in mentally stimulating activities can reduce your risk of Alzheimer’s disease, so rather than switching on the TV when you get in from work, give your brain a challenge and reach for a crossword, Sudoku puzzle or book instead.
Lazy health tip 6: Have leisurely meals
If there’s one instance where being lazy is an advantage, it’s when eating your meals. Taking long, leisurely meals – as opposed to eating on the run or multi-tasking – is a great way to look after your digestive system and also help you lose weight. By eating more slowly and focusing on your food, you will enjoy and savor it more and cut the risk of overeating. Also, as it takes 20 minutes for your body to register the feeling of being full, by eating more slowly you will feel full after less.
Lazy health tip 7: Order a fruit and veg box
If compiling your own healthy shopping lists feels too much like hard work, save time and energy by letting someone else do the work. Many farms and health food stores now deliver seasonal fruit and veg to local areas on a weekly basis, making it easy to try varied healthy produce without stepping foot out your door. Alternatively, for those who want more and have pennies to spare, several companies now offer the option of having prepared healthy meals delivered direct to your home.
Lazy health tip 8: Hit the dance floor
While the idea of a workout fills many with dread, there are plenty of ways to stay fit without it feeling like hard work. If you struggle to get motivated for an organised exercise session, try turning a night out into a workout instead. Hitting the floor for a dance is a great way to get fit, burn calories and tone and strengthen the body. More importantly, unlike with the gym, it provides a fun workout that won’t feel like exercise.
Lazy health tip 9: Supplement your diet
Keep falling off the healthy eating wagon? Try complementing your diet with a good quality nutritional supplement or “superfood”. While it’s no substitute for a healthy eating regime, on those days when your good intentions slip by the wayside a good supplement should help tide you over. Try a multi-vitamin complex or a natural “superfood” – such as spirulina, wheatgrass or bee pollen – which is packed with nutrients to help keep your health on track.
Lazy health tip 10: Get lots of sleep
While laziness is generally considered to be detrimental to your health, when it comes to sleeping it can actually pay off. Research has found that sleep can help you live longer, boost your memory and reduce stress, while getting less than five hours a night can lead to accidents, weight gain, and increased risk of heart disease. While it’s possible to have too much of a good thing, getting a regular eight hour’s sleep is a cheap and simple way to boost your health.

Education15, 000 Nigeria Students Face Deportation In UK by ryback(op): 3:09pm On Aug 31, 2012
[b]Over 2,000 non-EU students could be deported from the UK now that the London Metropolitan University has been stripped of its Highly Trusted Status, which was required to sponsor foreigners and grant visas.

The students may be expelled within 60 days if they don’t find another way to sponsor their studies, the National Union of Students (NUS) said.

London Met announced the loss of its Highly Trusted Status on the university’s website. A UK Border Agency (UKBA) official claimed that London Met had failed to address serious deficiencies identified by the UKBA six months ago.

London Metropolitan discovered in a survey that more than a quarter of the university’s foreign students did not have permission to be in the UK, Immigration Minister Damian Green told the AP. The university’s visa-granting status was suspended last month.

"We have been working with them since then, but the latest audit revealed problems with 61% of files randomly sampled. Allowing London Metropolitan University to continue to sponsor and teach international students was not an option,” the statement by UKBA said.

David Willetts, the Universities Minister, said that a special task force will be formed to aid the foreigners affected by the loss of sponsorship, including help “finding other institutions at which to finish their studies.”

Professor Malcolm Gillies, vice chancellor at the London Metropolitan, expressed concern that the UKBA measure could be broadened to every educational institution in the country, ITV News reported.

The National Union of Students (NUS) contacted top UK officials on Wednesday to “express anger” over the situation, and to point out the “potentially catastrophic effects on higher education as a 12.5-billion pound per year export industry for the UK”.

NUS President Liam Burns also called the measures “disgusting,” arguing that foreign students were “used as a political football by politicians who seem either incapable of understanding, or are simply uncaring about the impact of their decisions on individuals, universities and the UK economy.”

The London Met claimed that the UKBA probe had left a "10 million pound black hole" in their budget.

In an interview with the Huffington Post, London Met student Yemi, a Nigerian national, said, “I'm disappointed my plans went down the drain. … I chose London Met over Middlesex and City, and it proved costly. As early as February I had made plans for London Met and never in my wildest imagination did I think this could happen.”
