Russian criminals have stolen more than 1.2 billion Internet usernames and passwords, and the odds are decent that some of yours might be among them. There's no need to panic at this point -- Hold Security, the firm that discovered the theft, says the gang isn't in the business of stealing your bank account information. Instead, they make their money by sending out spam for bogus products like weight-loss pills. That means you need to stay on your guard. If you see strange messages being sent from your email or social media accounts, you might be among those affected. Here are a few things you can do to protect yourself: Change your passwords and make them smart: When it comes important services, including email, banking and social media, you'll want to change those passwords. As a rule, create different passwords for different services, and change them every six months or so. There's a lot of debate about what makes for the best password. Some experts recommend using a password manager -- a single service that you log into which then generates random passcodes for all your accounts. But the danger with password managers is that they create a single point of failure: if the password manager itself is compromised, all your accounts become vulnerable. Another solution is to use long sentences or phrases. The more characters you add to a password, the more difficult it is for a computer program to crack -- even if your password is a simple sentence that's easy to remember ("I Need 2 Spend Less Time On Social Media" . Russian criminals have stolen 1.2 billion Internet user names and passwords, amassing what could be the largest collection of stolen digital credentials in history, a respected security firm said Tuesday. There's no need to panic at this point -- Hold Security, the firm that discovered the theft, says the gang isn't in the business of stealing your bank account information. Instead, they make their money by sending out spam for bogus products like weight-loss pills. The Milwaukee-based firm, didn't reveal the identities of the targeted websites, citing nondisclosure agreements and a desire to prevent existing vulnerabilities from being more widely exploited. Hold Security founder Alex Holden told CNNMoney that the trove includes credentials gathered from over 420,000 websites -- both smaller sites as well as "household names." The criminals didn't breach any major email providers, he said. A credential pair consists of a user name -- often an email address -- plus a password. There are roughly half a billion email addresses in the gang's collection, Hold Security says. Holden said the gang makes its money by hacking into email and social accounts, posing as trusted friends and family and advertising bogus products. That means that if you see strange messages being sent from your email or social media accounts, you might be among those affected. "It's really not that impactful to the individuals, and that's why they were under the radar for so long," Holden said. "They've ignored financial information almost completely." (CNN) -- A dinosaur from the Middle-Late Jurassic period, found in China, gives scientists new understandings of how birds evolved, according to a Wednesday report from the journal Nature. The newly discovered species is called Aurornis xui. "Aurora" is Latin for "daybreak" or "dawn." Ornis is Greek for "bird." The last part of the name, xui, honors paleontologist Xu Xing. The dinosaur lived about 150 million years ago, said Pascal Godefroit, lead author and researcher at the Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences in Brussels. The critter was 51 centimeters -- about 20 inches -- long. It had teeth and probably fed on insects, Godefroit said. It was found in the Tiaojishan Formation of Liaoning Province, China. This dinosaur appears to have had four wings, two along the arms and two along the legs, Godefroit said. It could probably glide but not actively fly off the ground. The specimen, exceptionally preserved in a clay sediment, appears to be an adult. Another fossil from about 150 million years ago, called Archaeopteryx, was previously considered the most primitive known bird. Godefroit said the newly discovered dinosaur throws that into question, as the new find appears to represent an even more primitive, older bird. Alan Turner, assistant professor of anatomical sciences at Stony Brook University in New York, who was not involved in the study, said in an e-mail that the find was "a very interesting fossil discovery." It demonstrates just how similar the earliest birds were to the earliest members of the dinosaur groups, dromaeosaurids and troodontids, Turner said. These groups are all theropods, small meat-eating dinosaurs that walked on two feet. Because of how well-preserved and well-prepared the specimen is, it provides useful information about the creature's evolutionary position and the changes that were taking place in the lineage that led to birds, he said. Still, Aurornis xui's exact position in its family tree is likely not set in stone, he said. The relationships between the earliest bird species and their dinosaur relatives can change in subtle ways depending on the data set being used by particular groups of researchers. That means that species that were once called "birds" can become considered "troodontids," or vice versa. The exact details are still being worked out, Turner said. "That's why new discoveries like Aurornis xui are both very exciting and frustrating because they often raise as many questions as they answer," he said. http://edition.cnn.com/2013/05/29/world/asia/dinosaur-discovery/index.html?sr=fb052913dinosaurdiscovery3p

An endocrinologist from a top hospital in India has suggested that modified bariatric surgery such as sleeve gastrectomy should be considered at an earlier stage of Type 2 diabetes rather than as a last resort. A new study by Kirtikumar Modi, an endocrinologist at the hospital in India, and his team has found that Type 2 diabetes often reverses after modified weight loss surgery. Sleeve gastrectomy is a less radical bypass, the most common type of bariatric surgery. It reduces the size of the stomach using laparoscopic (“keyhole”) surgery and stomach stapling. Recent research shows that the procedure can resolve or greatly improve Type 2 diabetes in obese patients and even in some diabetic patients who are not obese. Initially, Modi and co-workers studied 43 patients with Type 2 diabetes who had sleeve gastrectomy with ileal interposition, in which the ileum, a part of the small intestine, is moved closer to the stomach. All patients had poorly controlled diabetes, with average disease duration of 10years. On average, their body mass index (BMI) was 33kg/m2 After sleeve gastrectomy, 20 (47 percent) of the patients no longer had diabetes at an average follow-up of months, the researchers reported. Remission of diabetes was defined as having haemoglobin. A 1c level (a measure of blood sugar control over the past three months) below 6.5 percent and no longer needing insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents (bloody sugar - lowering medications). “The other 23 patients in this group all need fewer or smaller doses of oral diabetes medications”, Modi said. Of the 30 patients who had high blood pressure before surgery, 27 (90 percent) no longer had hypertension after the operation, according to the study abstract. “Patients who had better improvement in diabetes remission and other metabolic abnormalities were those who had diabetes less than 10 years and a BMI above 27, the researchers found. When they excluded non-obese patients from analysis, the diabetes remission rate increased to 85 per cent, similar to that reported with gastric bypass surgery”, Modi said. Based on these predictors of good outcome the researchers assigned 17 additional patients with Type 2 diabetes to undergo a different modification of bariatric surgery, called diverted sleeve gastrectomy. “The laparoscopic procedure diverts food away from parts of the small intestine, including the duodenum, where absorption of nutrients begins. The patients received the procedure because, compared with the original group, they had a longer duration of diabtetes- 15 years on average – and a lower BMI (29kg/m2), which predicated worse outcomes with sleeve gastrectomy”, Modi explained. An average of nine months after diverted sleeve gastrectomy, 12 patients, or more than 70 per cent, had remission of diabetes. The investigations reported that the remaining five patients had decreased requirements for oral hypoglycemic medications. Seven of the eight patients (nearly 88 per cent) who had high blood pressure before surgery no longer did post operatively. “Modified bariatric surgery promises to be an effective treatment for achieving a cure of Type 2 diabetes and other metabolic abnormalities like high blood pressure”, Modi concluded. The result will be presented at The Endocrine Society’s 94th Annual meeting in Houston. Source: http://www.lifemedcare.com/?q=modified-laparoscopic-weight-loss-surgery-provides-type-2-diabetes-cure |

With the different every day tips of weight loss advice for routine fitness all on every corner, it is quite difficult to keep a tab on which weight loss tips really do work and which don’t. It’s important to know that weight gain or loss emanates from our day to day habits. If you’ve been looking for sound advice on weight loss programs and diet plans, we have some good news for you. Here are seven essential tips for guaranteed weight loss that will set your weight for life. Only the best, most accurate and scientifically proven health advice made the cut and has been included in this fitness guide. Weight loss tip 1: Decide how much weight you need to loss - Most people start their weight loss journey by claiming to be xyz kilos overweight. This isn’t a healthy way to project or aim for weight. Calculate your desired weight against your height by using reliable methods like the BMI, and set a healthy weight loss target. This is often half the battle won. It’s this moment of decision that can make you attain the weight for your happiness. So, decide now! Weight loss tip 2: Eat healthy home-cooked meals. Keep your house well-stocked with fruits, vegetables, healthy fishes and meats, grains, spices, cereals, and flavors. Follow our tricks to healthy cooking, cooking vegetables for the week, and low-fat cooking posts to understand how best you can stock your kitchen with healthy and delicious ingredients. First and foremost, consuming at least five servings of fruit and vegetables each day will help you lose weight because fiber moves fat through our digestive system faster so that less of it is absorbed. High fiber food also makes us feel full sooner and stay in our stomach longer. Weight loss tip 3: As much as possible, eliminate ‘white’ foods from your diet. High sugar and high carbohydrate foods create an insulin spike that tells our body to start storing fat. They also trigger the blood sugar high, which is inevitably followed by low insulin. This drop in insulin level leaves one feeling hungry, tired and wanting to eat more. Specifically, at the bottom of an insulin crash the body craves more for sugar and carbohydrates, setting us up for a vicious weight gain cycle. With this in mind, it’s good advice to simply avoid ‘white’ foods whenever possible. Choose brown rice instead of white, whole wheat bread instead of white, and cut back on goodies made with processed flour. As a matter of fact, actively seek out all the expert advice on healthy diet and nutrition that you can find. All of this will go into helping the next step – exercise consistently. Weight loss tip 4: Having made the decision of how much weight you need to loss and the right food to eat, you must exercise consistently. That may seem like common sense, but only 45 percent of adults are actually following their doctor’s advice and getting the recommended minimum: 30 minutes a day, at least four days a week. After only four weeks of inactivity, the body begins to shed muscle mass and aerobic fitness levels start to diminish after missing only two weeks of workouts. After your exercise and the day’s job, get at least eight hours of sleep each night. Research has shown that people who sleep only four hours a night have an 18 percent reduction in leptin, a hormone that tells the brain there is no need for more food, and a 28 percent reduction in ghrelin, which triggers hunger. Weight loss tip 5: Don’t focus so much on fast weight loss. Instead, concentrate your efforts on achieving permanent weight loss. While it may be tempting to try the latest fat diet or prescription diet pill, keep in mind that quick weight loss doesn’t always equate to healthy weight loss. As a matter of fact, when you diet without exercising, up to half of the weight you lose could be from muscle. Losing muscle is the absolute worst thing you can do when you’re trying to acquire permanent fat loss, so don’t be tempted by the gimmicks promising rapid weight loss. Focus on permanent weight loss through a sensible diet and exercise program, and you’ll be pleased with the long-term results. Weight loss tip 6: Drink plenty of water. Water suppresses the appetite naturally and helps the body metabolize stored fats. Studies show that a decrease in water will cause fat deposits to increase, while an increase in water can actually reduce fat deposits. Why? The kidneys can’t function properly without enough water. When the kidneys don’t function to capacity, some of the work load is taken on by the liver. The liver’s primary function is to metabolize stored fat into useable energy. If the liver has to do some of the kidney’s work, it can’t function at its optimal capacity. As a result, it metabolizes less fat. More fat remains stored and weight loss/fat loss stops. Check out some exciting ways to make water interesting and you will be packing it away in no time. Do not forget to carry a water bottle to your workout, and take a few sips after every 2-3 minutes of exercise. Weight loss tip 7: Our final weight loss tip is to encourage you to stay motivated. Staying motivated is probably the most effective weight loss advice you’ll ever receive. Since each person is different, motivational techniques will vary. However, many have found that charting fat loss progress to be very encouraging. Others maintain that the single most motivating action is to find a friend and commit to exercise together. Whatever method you choose, find a way to stay motivated if you want to write your own weight loss success story. Although these are scientifically proven recommendations, there are some individuals with extreme obesity that may need some interventions. There many things you can do to improve your chances of conceiving, providing evidence that you are aware of these and have acted upon them will help your gynaecologist to agree the next step with you. ONE - THE SECRET OF TIMING Many people are not aware that there are only about six days each month you might get pregnant and that your best (33% average) is on the day of ovulation, when one of the ovaries release a ripe egg. It is important that you have sex during this window of opportunity so that the sperm makes contact with the egg and fertilization occurs. For a woman with regular 28days circle, the days of ovulation will be about 14days before the start of her period, but this may be difficult to predict, so it help to keep a dairy and note the pattern of the periods. There are also a number of ovulation prediction kits you may consider trying one of these. TWO - REDUCE ALCOHOL AND CUT OUT SMOKING Heavy and/or regular drinking (more than six units per day) can lower a man’s sperm count and affect the health of the sperm. Its also recommended that women should avoid alcohol when trying to conceive as it can affect a developing foetus and cause birth defects. Smoking also harms sperm and reduces a man’s sex drive. It affects ovulation in women and reduces fertility. THREE-MEASURE YOUR BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) BMI is calculated using height and weight which is an indicator of health. Ideally, women should have BMI between 19 and 30 before they start their IVF cycle. If a woman’s BMI is more than this, then weight loss is recommended to increase the chances of success. Excess body fat in men is also significant cause of low sperm counts. FOUR - EAT WELL Eating a healthy, balanced diet has many advantages. It helps maintain an ideal body weight, keeps the hormones level of the body normal and improves the health of the reproductive system. Particularly food that are rich in antioxidant, vitamin C, E and zinc may play key roles in fertility, increasing sperm count and motility (movement) and reducing stress on eggs and the female reproductive organs. Foods such as green leafy vegetables (folic acid, calcium and iron)eggs and diary (calcium) nut and seeds (vitamin E, zinc and selenium) and citrus fruit (vitamin C) provide key nutrients. FIVE - REDUCE CAFFEINE It is thought that caffeine affects the fertility level of both men and women. So cutting back is sensible precaution. Caffeine is not just found in tea and coffee but also in chocolate and some soft drinks. SIX - EXERCISE Moderate exercise every day is a key to maintain a healthy body helping to burn off excess body fat and reducing the effect of stress on hormones level. For men, it can boost the fertility hormone testosterones but it is important that women avoid excessive exercise as this can result in irregular period. Some enjoyable low-impact activities including walking, swimming, cycling, and yoga. SEVEN - MEN SHOULD AVIOD HARD BICYCLE SEATS AND HOT BATHS Overheated testicle can temporarily lower sperm count so men should avoid saunas, hot bath and tight under wear. In addition, regular and prolong cycling on hard bike seats can reduce fertility through pressure on the perineum potentially damaging nerves and blood vessels to the genital area. Consider a gel seat for cushioning these parts of the body. EIGHT - GET MORE SLEEP Getting good regular sleep of about 8 hours or more per night can help both men and women optimize their fertility. Lack of sleep can have a negative effect on hormone level with studies of profession involving sleep deprivation (flight attendance, shift workers)showing an increase in irregular period among women. Getting good regular sleep of about 8 hours or more per night can help both men and women optimize their fertility. NINE - THINK ABOUT YOUR HEALTH Take advice about the treatment you are taking to see if these may affect fertility. Other factors that may have an adverse effect on your fertility are over the counter medicines and some herbal drugs. TEN - TAKE IT EASY Lastly don’t forget to take time to calm down and enjoy other company. Emotional stress has profound effect including interfering with the hormones responsible for egg and sperm production considering taking regular exercise, getting home on time and taking more or less holiday which can help to reduce pressure. Historically, infertility has been considered a woman’s disease. It is important to note that male factor contributing to infertility has become recognize and it is now known that it is properly responsible for 50%-60% of cases. The mistaken notion that infertility is associated with impotence or decrease muscularity may contribute to this fear. The good is that the rapid research advance in male reproduction has brought about dramatic changes in the ability to both diagnose and treat male infertility. http://lifemedcare.com/?q=fertility-and-health-news |
