godG: It is important for you to know that they are both pronouns.
'Who' mostly functions as the subject in a sentence. A subject in a sentence is the person or thing that is influencing the verb (or action) in the sentence. It cines before the Predicator (Verb). Example: 1. Who is there? S. P. A. (Subject. Predicator. Adverbial.)
'Whom' is used as the object of a verb. It cones after the Predicator (verb). An Object is like the receiver of an action and some prepositions like to, by, for, etc. are used occasionally with 'whom'.
Examples: 2. To whom | was | it |given? O. P. S. P.
The example above can be rephrased to be:
a. It |was given |to whom? S. P. O. b. It | was given| to Ali. S. P. O. c. It | was given| him. S. P. O.
Here is a trick, if you see a question and you can answer it with 'him' or 'her' use whom and if you can answer with s/he, use who. Look at these:
3. To [who/whom] shall we give? Our answer here can be him/her, hence 'whom'. If you also notice it, you will see that the question starts with a preposition. Isn't it?
4. [Who/whom] saw the snake? Here, we can say s/he and not 'him' or 'her'. a. S/he saw the snake. So the best option is 'who'.
Hope this is understood. If still confused, let me know. thanx a bunch |
