saintjoel:
Jelad ventures is an advocate for a clean and successful entry for vehicles coming into NIGERIA through the port OR land borders. Vehicles could be cars, SUV, heavy machineries etc but as long as custom duty is paid,no issues will hinder it's movement.

Our crew was at the Federal Operations unit in Ikeja to help retrieve two vehicles that were impounded by the patrol. When we tell prospective importers that it's all about getting an agent that will quote low prices but getting an agent that will quote low prices and also get the vehicles into NIGERIA with no hassles. Many importers are always Penny wise but pound foolish when it comes to duty payment and with the new authorization from customs HQ that even registered vehicles should be seized when they are underpaid OR smuggled, many vehicle owners will have their vehicles impounded on the highways.

The two Camry cars were impounded because they were underpaid, the agents that were given the jobs paid N220,000 each instead of N300,000 - N350,000 in connivance with the importers but unfortunately they were all seized by f.o.u and each was released after spending almost N700,000 in their office. One of the importers had earlier contacted the JELAD crew to ask for the duty and he was given a quote of N380,000 **** CHARGED WITH THE NEW RATE OF N313 - 1$**** but someone somewhere decided to give the job to another agent for N280,000 which at the end backfired and they later had to seek for JELAD ventures' help to retrieve the cars from customs in Ikeja, they spent almost N700,000 extra on each car before they could be retrieved.

*** CHECKING YOUR DOCUMENTS DOESN'T COST MUCH AND ALLOWING AGENTS TO RAISE DEBIT NOTES FOR YOU TO AUGMENT WHAT THE INITIAL PAYMENT DOESN'T COST MUCH TOO.

*** ALWAYS MAKE SURE YOU PAY THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF MONEY/DUTY BEFORE YOUR VEHICLE'S ENTRY INTO NIGERIA..

That's why we at JELAD ventures make sure that we strike a balance between what you've to pay for duty and what you can afford to pay as an importer. We make sure that what you pay doesn't go beyond what you're supposed to pay and you don't need to drain your bank account while paying...

**** DON'T BE PENNY WISE BUT POUND FOOLISH ****...
If any importer falls into these category,he/she can approach a licensed AGENT to raise what is called a DEBIT NOTE (D.N). A debit note is raised with the importers consent, its raised between the C. A. C,post clearance unit and the valuations units.

The D. N is used to cover-up for the balance of what was supposed to be paid as duty initially and believe me, a DN will save you from embarrassment when custom officers stop you on the highway.

Please note that before a DN can be raised, your papers must be original and the original year of declaration must be known, also the cheapest you can process a DN is N170,000 but please note that it's also subject to the model of the vehicle you're declaring.

Picture one shows the initial payment of N158,000

Picture two shows N105,000 that was raised as D. N for the vehicle.

Picture three shows the post clearance release form showing the reason a D. N was raised.

Jelad ventures will stop quoting DUTY rates for forty-eight hours.

The reason is that we also ran foul of the law when we processed an highlander with N329,000 bank payment, the value was obtained from ilorin command and the jeep was also declared as 2008 highlander to Nigerian customs but the F.O.U declared that it was short paid, although many agencies weren't informed about these new development. Many valuation officers just churn out any figure that comes into their mind, while putting the vehicle, importer and agents at risk on the highways once they're out of the border/port.

We will now start running 2008 highlander for N800,000 as against N480,000 that we've been quoting for long.

Also,we're going to start a new process of quoting custom duty now. Jelad ventures will now start using TINCAN port and seme border as a benchmark, whatever bank charge we obtain from any command will be checked against what we obtain from the two entry points,so that SHORT-PAYMENTS will be avoided. Any value that is lower than what's obtainable at the two entry points will be disregarded.

Example -

Seme.              Tincan.         Ilorin/idiroko

N500,000.      N650,000.   N400,000

In a case like this where seme has a value of N500,000,tincan has N650,000 and ilorin/idiroko has N400,000. The seme value will be used, regardless of the land border the vehicle is coming in from. With these, Jelad ventures will protect it's  name and reputation as an agency that delivers and also protect it's  customs from harassment by custom officers, most especially the F. O. U.

My sincere apology goes to ejembi28 for every inconvenience caused, I wanted to save time and also make the duty less expensive for the importer, if my team and I knew that the value we obtained from the officers at the valuation units wasn't the new value,we'll not have gone ahead to process the duty. The jeep was declared has 2008 and not a lesser year but the valuation officers mistakenly/intentionally gave us the value used as at when NCS was using N282 - 1$ and not 313 - 1$,which is the new value.

Every thing that happened is highly regretted and whatever that needs to be done will be done once the jeep gets to Abuja and Jelad ventures will pay it's own part in the expenses incurred yesterday. I,as the chief executive officer was at a church camp and also stranded financially at that moment but ejembi28 will be reimbursed during the week or next week.

We also hope that this will not be the end of a warm business relationship between Jelad ventures and ejembi28, he has been a customer for years and we hope that the relationship remains like that.

We will also work hard to make sure that such issue will not happen again, any value obtained will be crosschecked with all entry points before processing is done. The forty-eight hours break is in a bid to obtain the real tariff from the F. O. U and local commands, these we hope this will prevent a situation where local commands will issue a value and F. O. U will stop the vehicle in the highway to tell us that we've obtained wrong values.

In sequel,Jelad ventures discovered some anomalies with idiroko and ILORIN commands but we can also tell you that with the information reaching us this evening, the three commands (seme, idiroko/ilorin) have all been streamlined.

ILORIN command has been the only commands using seventeen digits and also they've giving out values with the papers quoting the real manufacture years of the vehicles but F.O.U later started to have issues with it. Even before seme and idiroko commands adopted the "seventeen digit" capturing mode, ilorin had been using it for years, they've also been using the real manufacture years of vehicles for valuation but with the streamlined mode adopted by the federal ministry of finance and customs, all commands have started using the same mode of capturing and valuation. Valuation officers, especially those at idiroko/ilorin have been faulted for quoting prices just to increase the volume of jobs processed in their commands and they've all been reprimanded.

ILORIN command has also been the only command that we've been using for "declaration in absentia" jobs but all jobs will now be processed at seme border now," seen and unseen jobs". Since all commands will now be adopting the same mode, there will be no need for processing through any other command apart from seme border for vehicles coming in through the land border and TINCAN for sea cargo.

In summary, regardless of the exchange rate and cost of duty processing, JELAD ventures will do everything possible to get your duty papers done at prices that will not dent your pockets.

Good evening folks,

Quoted above has been part of the advice we've been given potential customers in this era of high exchange rates AND CUSTOM DUTY policies.

Nigerian custom service changed the exchange value used for calculating tariff from N197 - N282 to a dollar and it has affected duty payments a little bit.

Exchange rate to has seriously affected too,the scarcity of dollars and some other currencies too has affected sales of vehicles. The dealers in Cotonou have tried their best possible by dropping prices every now and then, they continue to do so everyday..

@ Jelad ventures, we've tried over the months to make vehicle purchase affordable for potential customers. That's why we've employed mechanics with many years of experience and also gone into agreements with technicians, insurance companies etc, just to make things work out.

Purchase from parks in Cotonou has always been a cheaper alternative for customers and in the face of high exchange rates and unfriendly government policies, jelad ventures will still make sure you purchase clean, sharp looking vehicles at affordable rates. We must all face the realities on ground and although some people will still like to things are still normal, it's not normal at all and although there's nothing we can do but pray, we must also brace up and face the realities on ground. We will continue to seek cheaper alternatives but that will not compromise our standard at JELAD ventures, we'll not start quoting ridiculously low prices just to lure clients into Cotonou, if it takes buying from Lagos or going into Togo to purchase heavy duty trucks and machineries, the jelad crew will sort it out......

Thanks for choosing jelad ventures and the jelad crew will always strive to be the best in what we do....

@whirlwind7.

Still on your deep knowledge about milage. You can Google this information. An average vehicle even in the western world with their massive highways is suppose to record 15,000 miles per year. Multiply that by 7 that gives you 105,000. Any miles below that you will buy at a premium. So what makes a 100k miles for a 2009 vehicle impossible beats my imagination.

Secondly, one of the argument in favor of Cotonue is they hardly tamper with miles but Nigerians like you will always want to glorify Crookedness and that's why your country will never grow. I repeat again that people like you drop milage doesn't make it a great thing.

I and InspiredM worked on a 2008 SUV that had only 20,000 miles as at 2011 that was before inspired started having issues. Bought that in 2011 and i hardly use it. The SUV is still sitting in my garage at 75,000 miles there goes your knowledge about milage.

Let's see how far you are willing to take this so the moderators can take us to the front page.

Why is it that it's not advisable to buy truck into the country from cotonou rather,it's advisable to buy it in Nigeria.

I as a cased study,i need Nissan Cabster pickup truck 1996-2010..in the country,i saw it at the asking price of #750-850k but when i made enquiry concerning cotonou,i found out it is a bit expensive to go for the latter which will be getting close to #1.1M after paying for the actual auto fees, cotonou customs duty,Nigerian customs duty and agent fees. What do you advise, sir!!!!!!!!
Sir,we all know that exchange rate and custom policy has increased the cost of vehicles,if you've seen a dealer that's willing to sell for N700,000 - N800,000 in Lagos and the vehicle is clean,non-accidented with original duty papers, please buy it sir.

3) Nigeria Customs’ palava: Customs’ issue is the king of all the challenges you can face when bringing your car into Nigeria from Cotonou. The issues ranges from vehicle seizure to exploitation. I do not hope for my enemy to experience this as those Custom guys are not smiling no matter who you are or who you know. They even seize vehicles that belong to their fellow custom officials as well as that of top military officials. The simplest way to save your car from being seized is by using a reliable and trustworthy agent and ensuring your car is taken into the Nigerian Customs’ compound at the border for proper duty assessment and payment.

4) Restricted movement: Most Nigerians who successfully bring in cars with compromised import duty from Cotonou usually count their gains at the time of purchase. However, this excitement fades away quickly as they begin to watch over their shoulders especially when travelling interstate. Some even travel without their cars due to fear of custom officials.

N was raised.

shown below are the excos from the national body of the association of Nigerian licensed customs agents addressing agents on TUESDAY about the ongoing strike at seme border by agents.

The national president, ALHAJI SHITTU is sitted third from the left, while Mr Fanu (Nybo),the chairman of ANLCA seme border is standing.

Part of what was discussed is as follows :-

1. Central database and data exchange between Benin customs/agents and Nigerian customs/agents. Agents have been fighting for a central database for years but custom officers and ministry of finance have turned deaf ears to our pleas. The central database will prevent corruption and smuggling, if a car is bought from/shipped through cotonou,a notification comes on at the Nigerian end and the car is expected at the border, while the agent in charge is also informed, if the CAR is smuggled into Nigeria, the FRSC and NPF can be informed and the car and it's owner will be arrested at the point of registration, the officers and agents involved in smuggling can then be traced.

2. Reduction of import tariff so that importers can be encouraged.

3. Reduction of custom checkpoints on our highways to prevent extortion of agents and importers.

4. The enforcement of a "one Direct trader input unit ( DTI),one agency rule",which also take care of false declarations, fake duty papers and smuggling.

5. Arrest of custom officers caught running entries and agents caught conniving with them.

6. The data capture of every licensed customs agent and the strict compliance to the rule. Also the national president talked about re-training of all agents.

The national president in the person of Alhaji SHITTU is currently in Kano to meet the C.G of customs for a parley while the minister of finance has summoned the area controller of seme border, the deputy controllers of vehicle seat and valuation to advice her on the next step to take on the tariff.

Have u ever wondered how you can identify fake custom papers?

All you need to check is what we call "CUSTOMS REFERENCE NUMBER" or c-number on your SGD form *single goods declaration form*.

This particular number is actually used to input details of your vehicle and payment of duty into the customs' database. It shows information like the consignee info ( agency handling your job),the means of entry (road for vehicles through land borders and ports for sea),office of entry (idiroko customs command or seme customs command or tincan port),location of vehicle and place of discharge(idiroko border/seme border, tincan),name and address of person/persons responsible for financial settlement (the owner of the vehicle) etc.

What fraudulent dealers do is called MO or machined outside-this is a process where a forger forges the bank receipts and all customs documentation. The documents look genuine but are not in the customs data base. It is a giant syndicate in the ports and borders because the vehicles are ultimately smuggled out of the ports/borders with conivance of fraudulent customs officials.

At the top right hand corner of your document is a very bold set of numbers. This is the "C" number. You can not miss it because it is so bold and prominent. Underneath it is a date. That date is to reflect the date duty was paid at the bank and stored in the customs ASSYCUDA data base. ASSYCUA means "automated system customs data". And the date under the C number means that that C number was computed into the data system on that date plus all the charges paid. If the payment reflects on the data base it means your documents are genuine,on the other hand if it does not reflect it means your car documents are duds/fake and your vehicle is liable to seizure and confiscation if you are stopped at any check point,if you are on a long distance journey.

My advise to any one buying a car from anybody is to request for the relevant documents in particular the SGD form which means "single goods declaration form" and has the C number boldly written at the top right hand corner. Under the C number is the date that document was posted into the data system.
No two vehicles can have the same C number and date. So armed with this you can visit any customs station to know if your documents are genuine.

With some cotonou smuggled cars showing up on our streets with forged documents as lagos cleared cars and vehicles been M.Od out of ports, this is a stress-free method of verifying your papers.

We have opened this thread for verification of C-numbers from the following points of entry -

1. Lagos port
2. Seme
3. Idiroko.

All you need to do is supply your name, address,VIN and the C-number of the vehicle and we run checks on it.THERE'S NO FIXED CHARGE FOR THE CHECKS BUT WHATEVER THE LORD PUTS IN YOUR HEART AS TIPS CAN BE SENT THROUGH OUR ACCOUNT...

Spot on @OP especially point 1 of the advantages. The dealers are not desperate to sale. They just tell u their price and walk away, no coarsing, preaching or overzealous nature of the Nigerian sellers.

However, they are usually dishonest about the state of the cars. Hence, it''s absolutely imperative to run a vehicle history report (VHR ) prior to making payment for any car.

Paying for Nigeria Custom Duty is a simple process but the NCS in conivance with agents have made it to appear a difficult process in order to extort buyers.

Once buyers can get valuation and walk into any bank and make payment themselves, the myth and difficulties associated with duty payment would have been debunked.
For those of you that think payment of custom duty is a smooth ride in any country without agents as brokers, shown below are the excos from the national body of the association of Nigerian licensed customs agents addressing agents on TUESDAY about the ongoing strike at seme border by agents.

So don't just think that agents are just sitting down to make money, they are actually the persons calling customs to order. There might be bad eggs amongst us but for every corrupt agent,we also have two or three corrupt importers. Agents like many other professional bodies are trained in what they do,can you walk into a clinic and start prescribing drugs for yourself or can you walk into a tax office and start auditing, if you're not trained as an auditor

If an agent charges you N800,000 for a job, they'll rather handover to an agent that claims he/she can do it for N400,000.

Want to purchase vehicles from Cotonou and clear through land borders, Jelad ventures is your surest link.

With years of experience in purchasing vehicles, Jelad ventures is in the top league and we don't boast about it cos our handiwork speaks for us.

If you decide to purchase through Cotonou and clear through borders, jelad ventures sacrifices time and effort to make sure that your vehicles leave the parks and gets to your homes in the same pristine condition that it left it departure port.

To even hasten the whole process, we can get your custom duty and vehicle registration done before the it's arrival at the border...

Our experience has also taught us that haste is always needed cos delay might destroy our reputation as registered brokers and also create dents in the pockets of importers. Jelad ventures manages to do it's job within the dictates of ANLCA and the Nigerian Customs Service.

Our after service record also is one in town, with dedicated mechanic workshops like AUTOMEDICS and other mechanics spread around Lagos and OGUN state, we make sure that minor/major faults can be fixed before it leaves our offices and also do pickups for servicing and maintenance after delivery....

What else would you ask for from a broker that has learnt lessons from its highs and lows, we've aged and now have the experience to handle your cargo and vehicles with superb skills.....

Car Talk › Re: Advantages And Disadvantages Of Buying Your Car From Cotonou by saintjoel(m): 10:35pm On Aug 20, 2016
musicwriter:
You have no idea the state of things today. Exchange rate as at today is N630 to 1,000 CFA. So, what you have there is over double the price you quoted!.

Car wasn't dutied.
It even makes it better if exchange dropped to N630 - 1,000 cefa. So how does what I quoted before double what I just quoted now, the difference is just N10:00.

It means that at 4.3m cefa, the car is N2.7m (asking price) + N480,000 ( Nigerian custom duty)....

Why didn't you pay duty for the car and you're also part of the problems agents have, you made it seem that it was just because they saw papers from Cotonou, you didnt tell us about the smuggling part.
