In 2022, the exchange rate was approximately ₦430 to one US dollar.

At the time, the minimum wage was ₦30,000. If you convert that amount to dollars by dividing ₦30,000 by ₦430, the result is approximately $70.

In other words, Nigeria’s minimum wage in 2022 was worth about $70.

That was already shameful. But what we have in 2026 is even more shameful.

In 2026, the minimum wage was increased to ₦70,000. At first glance, this appears to be a significant improvement. However, the exchange rate today is about ₦1,370 to one US dollar.

If you convert ₦70,000 to dollars, you get approximately $51.

So the reality is this:

• In 2022, the minimum wage was worth about $70.
• In 2026, the minimum wage is worth about $51.

The minimum wage has increased in naira, but its value has declined.

Yet some people are telling Nigerians that the economy of 2026 is better than that of 2022.

This is why state governors could pay salaries, because they have more money in Naira, but still pay workers as less than the value of the minimum wage of 2022.

FAAC ALLOCATION ARGUMENT

On FAAC allocation, Reno argues that before Tinubu, states received about ₦700 billion, but under Tinubu the allocation has risen to about ₦2.1 trillion. His conclusion is that states are receiving far more money today.

But let us look at the actual value of the money.

Using the 2022 exchange rate of approximately ₦430 to one dollar, ₦700 billion was worth about $1.63 billion.

Using the current exchange rate of approximately ₦1,370 to one dollar, ₦2.1 trillion is worth about $1.53 billion.

Therefore:

• The value of FAAC allocations in 2022 was approximately $1.63 billion.
• The value of FAAC allocations today is approximately $1.53 billion.

The figures in naira may look bigger, but the value has actually declined.

Do not be deceived by large numbers expressed in a weaker currency.

This is like placing a $100 note beside ₦100,000 and asking people to choose one. Even a seven-year-old would pick the $100 bill because ₦100,000 cannot buy $100. In fact, you would need roughly ₦137,000 to obtain $100 at the current exchange rate.

A currency that has lost much of its value can make people feel richer on paper while making them poorer in reality.

The issue is not how many zeros are attached to the naira. The real issue is purchasing power and value.

When salaries rise but buy less, workers are poorer. When allocations increase but are worth less, states are poorer.

Numbers alone do not tell the truth. Value does.


Let’s not even talk about the student loan. This is one of the most useless policies of this government. Tinubu came into office and made tuition fees much more expensive, then introduced the student loan scheme as a solution to a problem he himself created.

Yet, the student loan itself is another problem. Apart from that, show me the beneficiaries of the loan. Give me a clear idea of how they will repay it. Also, show me the infrastructure and quality of the universities where they are studying with these loans.

This government is so evil… How can one be proud of what one ought to be ashamed of? The reason you take loan is because you can’t afford it. Is that too difficult to fathom?
