Science/Technology / Blackberry Launches Service To Manage Android And Apple Device by salvino(m): 1:24pm On Jun 25, 2013
BlackBerry launched a service on Tuesday allowing government agencies and corporate clients to secure and manage devices powered by Google Inc’s Android platform and Apple Inc’s iOS operating system.

The long-anticipated offering, which BlackBerry had said would come out around mid-year, could help the company sell high-margin services to its large clients even if many, or all, of their workers are using smartphones made by its competitors.

The new Secure Work Space feature will be managed through BlackBerry Enterprise Service (BES) 10, a new back-end system launched at the start of this year that allows BlackBerry’s clients to control mobile devices on their internal networks.

The company, a one-time pioneer in the smartphone arena, is now fighting to regain ground lost to Apple’s iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd’s Galaxy devices. To compete, it has rolled out a trio of devices powered by its new BlackBerry 10 operating system.

It hopes to win back users with the Z10, Q10 and Q5 devices that were unveiled during the first half of this year. The first comprehensive look at the success of its turnaround plan will likely emerge when it reports quarterly results on Friday.

At the same time, it has indicated a shift in emphasis from smartphones to services.

“With an integrated management console, our clients can now see all of the devices they have on their network, manage those devices and connect to them securely,” David Smith, the head of enterprise mobile computing at BlackBerry, said in an interview.

“We now also have a secure work space on Android and iOS that allows our clients to secure and manage the data on those devices as well.”

BlackBerry has installed some 18,000 BES 10 servers since the system was launched in January, up from a little more than 12,000 servers one month ago, and more than 60 percent of U.S. Fortune 500 companies are testing or using the system.

The feature, when used to manage Android and iOS devices, will allow IT managers to fence off corporate email, calendars, contacts, tasks, memos, Web browsing and document editing from personal apps and content, which could be less secure.

Science/Technology / The Difference Between Gsm, Gprs, Edge, Umts, Hsdpa / Hsupa, And Hspa by salvino(m): 6:14pm On Jun 19, 2013
Global System for Mobile Communication GSM is an abbreviated mobile communications technology that is digital. GSM technologies are widely applied in mobile communications, especially mobile phones. This technology utilizes the microwave and signal transmission is divided by time, so that the signal information sent will arrive at the destination. GSM global standard used for mobile communications as well as mobile technology most widely used of people around the world. GSM capable of delivering voice and low speed data (9.6 to 14.4 kbps) and then evolved into GPRS. General Packet Radio Service or GPRS is the abbreviated development of GSM technology to speed data communications up to 115kbps for GPRS system can be used to transfer data (in the form of data packets) that are associated with e-mail, image data (MMS), Wireless Application Protocol (WAP ), and the World Wide Web (WWW).
Next is the Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution, or EDGE abbreviated. Earlier in the GPRS offers data speeds of 115 kbps, and in theory can reach 160 kbps. While at EDGE data speeds sbesar 384 kbps, and in theory could reach 473.6 kbps. In general, the speed of EDGE is three times greater than GPRS. Universal Mobile Telecommunication System or UMTS, and commonly referred to as Wideband Code-Division Multiple Access or WCDMA is a third generation technology (3G) to GSM. The technology is not compatible with CDMA2000 or often referred to as CDMA only. WCDMA can reach speeds of 384 kbps and the days to come will probably increase to around 10Mbps. This technology uses-Wideband AMR (Adaptive Multi-rate) for the codification of sound (voice codec), so the sound quality is obtained to be better than the previous generation. High Speed Downlink Packet Access (HSDPA) or High Speed Upload Packet Access (HSUPA), is actually two technologies are different but the technology is always a package deal, which means there is no HSDPA HSUPA. HSDPA is a standard HSPA with the ability of its transfer speed downlink (from network to the handset), which can reach speeds of HSDPA 7.2 Mbps downlink and in theory can ditinggkatkan up to 14.4 Mbps with a maximum speed of 384 kbps uplink. HSDPA in addition can be used by mobile phones but can also be used by the notebook to access the data at high speed. While a standard HSPA HSUPA capabilities of the uplinknya transfer speed (from the handset to the network), which can reach speeds of HSUPA uplink speeds theoretically up to 5.76 Mbps, but this is not implentasikan HSUPA (commercial) and the handset is not made. And the last is the High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) is the union of the HSDPA and HSUPA.

Science/Technology / The Headphones That Costs $30,000... by salvino(m): 9:37am On Mar 13, 2013
If you thought spending an average of $250 on high-end headphones was a lot, you ain’t seen nothing yet. Monster has just unveiled the headphones to shame all other headphones - the one-of-a-kind Diamond Tears Sally Sohn Edition Headphone. This latest pair of audio candy will be exclusively sold in Harrods of London to the tune of £20,000 ($30,000).

While Monster has a knack for often charging high prices for their merchandise - $30,000 seems a bit extreme even for their standards. So what makes this pair of headphones so special that it requires that many pounds?  The Sally Sohn, hand-crafted, one-of-a-kind Diamond Tears features a spider hugging the ear cup that sports black diamonds totaling 5.56 carats as well as 18k gold on the headphone’s headband and ear cups. Sohn is no stranger to creating one of a kind pieces. Often her jewelry is an example of her travels around the world and exotic gems she comes across.

Overall, the Diamond Tears headphones is pretty much the same, except for the spider and is certainly Harrods worthy given the store’s knack for selling overpriced, yet unique wares. The Sally Sohn Edition Headphone is certainly a testament to Monster’s devotion of fusing fashion and technology.  You will just need to cry real diamond tears in order to pay for it!

Phones / Blackberry Z10 And Q10, Which One Would You Choose by salvino(m): 9:26am On Jan 31, 2013
Just in case you were under a rock for a good part of the morning and afternoon, BlackBerry 10 launched today. The launch happened simultaneously around the world in key markets ranging from Canada to London to Dubai.

Not only did the company launch new handsets and a new operating system, but RIM officially became BlackBerry for good in name. So there is no more confusion - RIM now and forever will be known as BlackBerry, which is perhaps how it should have always been.  In other news, Alicia Keys was named their new Global Creative Director, because there can never be a new product launch without some mention or involvement of a celebrity. But does having Alicia’s stamp of approval mean you should run out and get the Z10 or Q10 featuring the BlackBerry 10 OS - maybe. Ms. Keys’ new gig includes showing us that BlackBerry is essential for your professional and personal life - bridging the gap between the two. Is it also a coincidence that Ms. Keys will be singing the national anthem on Super Bowl Sunday? AND there will be the first ever BlackBerry commercial on game day too? Last but not least, Kevin Michaluk from CrackBerry got a haircut live at the announcement. Yes folks, today was an all around good day for BlackBerry.

But putting all the pomp and circumstance aside, BlackBerry’s newest handsets - the Z10 and Q10 are potential game changers for BlackBerry. Having spent a couple of hours now with the Z10, we have only scratched the surface of this new smartphone. While the design isn’t that out of the box in comparison to other handsets out there - heck, the front looks a lot like a black iPhone! But we have come to really enjoy its soft touch grip and its super sharp 360 ppi display. That said, brightness of the screen could be a little better and we are starting to realize that the ’10′ in BlackBerry 10 indicates how long it takes to get acquainted with the device. For some, it could be 10 minutes or 10 hours! Learning which way to swipe and gesture is going to force a big learning curve for most users. That is because the user interface experience on BlackBerry 10 is a sharp departure from BlackBerry’s previous software versions.

That said, BlackBerry fanboys and girls will truly love the innovative revamped BBM with its Screen Share feature.  This new feature lets BB 10 users share their screen with other BlackBerry 10 users and it’s quite an impressive feature to come installed out of the box. We can already see screen sharing being used to troubleshoot issues on devices in IT environments.  As for the U.I., transitioning between apps is fast and fluid. The MicroHDMI output is also a nice inclusion for those professionals who want to use their smartphone for presentations on the go. And while BlackBerry has ditched as many buttons as possible on the Z10, they did include dedicated volume buttons, a voice control button on the side of the handset, and a reset button on the top of the device. And finally, our tried and true red blinking notification light is still very much intact.

So where does that leave the Q10? Well the Q10 is a must have for those BlackBerry users that want to try out BlackBerry 10 without giving up their beloved QWERTY keypad. It is basically the second coming of the beloved Bold series. That said, with both a touchscreen and dedicated keyboard, the Q10 offers the best of both worlds. But with a 3.1″ display, you’ll be giving up some display real estate for the sake of having a keypad. This smaller screen real estate looks like it could potentially become an issue with the feature rich BlackBerry 10 OS. But overall, the quality of the handset is solid and we have to say, the Q10 area of the BlackBerry event was getting the most attention. The keypad is extremely ergonomic for its size and offers great tactile feedback. So even though the Z10 might be the flagship BlackBerry 10 device, the QWERTY keypad touting Q10 could be the sleeper hit. And fortunately, the battery is still removable in case you end up experiencing a freeze or failure… but we are hoping that is not the case with the BlackBerry 10.

Other key specs for both devices, include 2GB of RAM, 16GB of built-in memory, a 1.5GHz processor, NFC, LTE support, a 8MP rear-facing camera with 5X digital zoom and 108p video recording, and a 2MP front-facing camera. with 720p video recording.

Because of the massive worldwide appeal of BlackBerry 10, many carriers around the world will be launching the device on different dates in February, while we can expect to see the Z10 on both AT&T, Verizon ($199 on contract), and Sprint, sometime in March.

So have we fallen for the re-designed, re-engineered, re-invented BlackBerry 10? We’ll need to spend more time with the Q10 before we jump to any hard conclusions.
