Governor Ortom’s Aide Asks Nigerian Central Bank To Remove Arabic From New Naira Notes, Use English, Nigerian Languages.

SaharaReporters reported on Wednesday that the CBN announced its plan to redesign some naira notes.

The CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele, who disclosed this while addressing journalists on Wednesday, said the new notes will be in circulation from December 2022.

He advised Nigerians to take their old notes to banks in exchange for the new notes.

According to Emefiele, the new notes include N200, N500 and N1000.

The CBN under Emefiele has been accused of policy somersault and failure to address the most fundamental fiscal challenges of the country.

Reacting to the announcement, the Senior Special Assistant to Governor Samuel Ortom on Media and Publicity, Tever Akase, said that Nigerian languages should be on the currencies, not Arabic.

Akase who stated this on his Twitter account wrote: “Those redesigning the naira notes should ensure that inscriptions of all Nigerian languages are on the currencies.

“If this is impossible, they should remove the existing Arabic inscriptions and leave only English on the new notes. Arabic is not Nigeria’s 2nd official language.”

North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un has reportedly banned mullet hairstyles and skinny jeans in North Korea.

The US unemployment rate has risen to 14.7%, with 20.5 million jobs lost in April, as the coronavirus pandemic devastated the economy.
The rise means the jobless rate is now worse than at any time since the Great Depression of the 1930s.
Since the pandemic began, the US has suffered its worst growth numbers in a decade and the worst retail sales report on record.
Just two months ago, the unemployment rate was at 3.5%, a 50-year low.
"It is historically unprecedented," said economist Erica Groshen, former head of the government's Bureau of Labor Statistics, who now teaches at Cornell University. "We have put our economy into a medically induced coma in order to heal it from the pandemic... and that has led to the most precipitous loss of jobs seen in any of the modern data."
The report from the Labor Department showed declines in every sector of the economy.
Leisure and hospitality was hit especially hard, with payrolls falling by 7.7 million or 47%. Employers in education and health services cut 2.5 million positions, while retailers shed 2.1 million.
The Labor Department said more than three-quarters of those without jobs described themselves as temporarily laid off, a sign that many of those currently without work are hopeful that the economy will be able to rebound.

Ukrainian airliner was shot down by Iran with Russian-made surface-to-air missiles

The Ukrainian plane that crashed Wednesday was shot down by two Russian-made surface to air missiles (SA-15), according to a US official familiar with the intelligence.

The US saw Iranian radar signals lock onto the jetliner, before it was shot down.

The morning after the incident, US analysts discovered the data but took another day to verify.

Trudeau says Canada has intelligence Iran shot down Ukrainian airliner


According to CNN, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Thursday that Canadian officials have intelligence from their own sources and Canada's allies that shows Ukrainian International Airlines flight 752 was shot down by an Iranian surface to air missile. "This may have been unintentional," Trudeau said.
The US increasingly believes that Iran mistakenly shot down the airliner, according to multiple US officials. The working theory is based on continuing analysis of data from satellites, radar and electronic data collected routinely by US military and intelligence.
President Donald Trump on Thursday said he suspected the crash was not due to mechanical issues, indicating that "somebody could have made a mistake on the other side."

According to eyewitnesses, one of the victims was the driver of a 14-seater bus.

He had conveyed some passengers who were returning from the yuletide celebrations and tried to disembark close to the bank premises.

But a minor disagreement ensued between the driver and the policeman after he had asked him not to drop the passengers there.

Thereafter, the policeman opened fire on the occupants killing the driver and two other passengers including a serving corps member.

Visibly angered by the developments, the youths went on rampage, destroying the bank’s Automated Teller Machine (ATM).

Meanwhile, three police vans and mobile policemen have been drafted to the scene of the incident located close to the Central Motor Park, in Ekeki, the state capital.

Reacting to the development, the State Police Command said the officer, accused of extra-judicial killing, has been arrested.

According to a statement issued by the spokesman of the Command, SP Asinim Butswat, the Commissioner of Police, CP Uche Anozia, has now ordered that he be remanded in custody.

“The authorities of Bayelsa Police Command have arrested and taken into custody one Police Mobile Force (PMF) personnel for suspicion of Discreditable Conduct and Unlawful Use of his Firearm.

“The suspect, a male NCO, who was arrested on the orders of the State Commissioner of Police, CP Uche Anozia is currently in detention at the State Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department, Yenagoa,” Butswat said.

The Police, however, claimed that no lives were lost. Rather, the victims were rushed to the hospital where “they are currently responding to treatment.”

They have also vowed to get to investigate the case and ensure that all indicted persons are brought to justice.

A former governor of the old Western Region , Brigadier General Oluwole Rotimi (retd . ) , said on Monday that he had given up hope on the present generation of political leaders in the country in view of their selfish approach to governance.
Rotimi, who was the Chairman at the 21st Benjamin Oluwakayode Osuntokun Lecture, held at the Emeritus Professor Theophilus Ogunlesi Hall, University College Hospital, Ibadan , also expressed worries about the attitude of the citizens to information from those who should know .
He said , “ Nigeria is not short of people who will diagnose the causes of our problems . It is in finding solutions that we are lost .
“ It is sad that rather than stick to the message , people would rather take on the messenger . When certain messages are passed to Nigerians we criticise the messenger ; we don’ t give thought to the message .
“ For me , there is no hope in the present generation of political leaders . There is a Yoruba proverb which says that a dog that would get missing would not heed the call of the hunter .
“ A word is sufficient for the wise. In this country , I want to join others in re- emphasising , that we need to reintroduce the teaching of history and civic education .
Earlier in his lecture , Maj . Gen . Akintunde Akinkunmi (retd . ) , said greed and corruption were intertwined, and explained that the former (greed ), gave birth to the latter .
Akinkunmi , who was Chief Medical Officer (Reserves ) , Royal Army Medical Corps, British Army , stated that greed emanated from discontentment.

Super Eagles footballer, Jude Ighalo and his wife Sonia, have deleted each others pictures from their Instagram pages amidst reports that their 10-year-old marriage is in crisis.



Rumors have been rife that their marriage has been in crisis since he built his massive house in Lagos and has been more in Nigeria while Sonia and their three children are based in London.



A look at their Instagram pages yesterday January 4th, showed that the football star and Sonia who used to celebrate each other on Instagram, have deleted every post they made of themselves.

Chad has ended a months-long mission fighting Boko Haram in neighbouring Nigeria and withdrawn its 1,200-strong force across their common border.

It’s our troops who went to aid Nigerian soldiers months ago returning home. They have finished their mission,” spokesman Colonel Azem Bermandoa told AFP.
“None of our soldiers remains in Nigeria,” he added, without specifying whether they might be replaced following Friday’s pullout.

At least three people were killed and several others injured when an illegal gas plant caught fire and exploded on Saturday in Kaduna State.

The incident occurred at the Sabon Tasha area of Chikun Local Government Area of the state, a few kilometres away from the Kaduna refinery.

Among the casualties was a university professor who came to have a haircut at a barbing saloon near the gas plant.

The don was caught in the inferno while eyewitnesses told Channels Television at the scene that some of the bodies were burnt beyond recognition.




The disaster was said to have occurred in the afternoon when operators of the retail gas plant were dispensing gas to customers.

There was, however, a massive explosion due to a leakage which resulted in the fire outbreak and was quick to spread to nearby shops in the area.

Hours later, the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Mr Samuel Aruwan, visited the scene alongside the Director of the State Fire Service, Paul Aboi.




Aruwan condoled with the families of the victims and commended emergency and security agencies for their prompt intervention to salvage the situation.

On his part, Aboi believes a clampdown on illegal gas plant operators will forestall such a disaster.

The incident is first of its kind in Sabon Tasha, a suburb located on the outskirts of Kaduna metropolis.

Some of the residents who spoke to Channels Television called on the state government to ban illegal gas retail outlets, in order to prevent a reoccurrence.




The gas explosion came a few days after the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR) sealed about four illegal gas plants in the Kaduna metropolis...
