PoliticsThe Fulani Invasion Of Various Tribes Of Nigeria - The History by SammywritesNG(op): 11:30am On Apr 01, 2025
Introduction: The Foreign Origin of the Fulani and Their Conquest of Indigenous Nigerian Tribes
The Fulani began migrating to Northern Nigeria around the 13th to 15th centuries, during the medieval period. Their migration was part of a broader movement of Fulani people across the Sahel region of West Africa, originating from Senegambia (modern-day Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea) and moving eastward in search of grazing land for their cattle.

By the 16th and 17th centuries, Fulani settlements had become more established in parts of Hausa land, Borno, and Adamawa. where they initially lived among the Hausa and other indigenous tribes as traders, scholars, and pastoralists.
However, their role in the region drastically changed in 1804, when Usman dan Fodio, a Fulani Islamic scholar, launched the Fulani Jihad. Under the banner of Islamic reform, the Fulani used military force to overthrow the Hausa kingdoms and subjugate other indigenous tribes, establishing the Sokoto Caliphate. This marked the beginning of Fulani political dominance in Northern Nigeria, despite their status as a migrant group. Their rule was characterized by oppression, heavy taxation, forced Islamization, and slave raids, particularly against the Hausa, Nupe, Tiv, and Yoruba peoples.

This article provides a detailed account of how the Fulani invaded each tribe in Northern and parts of Western Nigeria, the extent of their oppressive rule, and their mark in modern times.

The Fulani invasion of Northern and parts of Western Nigeria was not just a military conquest but a systematic takeover that resulted in the subjugation, oppression, and enslavement of the indigenous people. While the Fulani claimed to bring Islamic reforms, the reality was that they enslaved populations, imposed heavy tributes, and destroyed existing political structures, particularly in the Hausa states. Below is a detailed account of how each tribe suffered under Fulani rule.

1. Hausa States — Betrayal and Subjugation
Before the Fulani invasion, the Hausa states (Gobir, Kano, Katsina, Zazzau, Daura, Kebbi, Zamfara, and others) were powerful city-states engaged in trade, governance, and warfare. The Hausa rulers, though at times oppressive, had their own well-established leadership and systems of governance.

Sometimes I begin to wonder how people become rich over night.
Some people will say work hard.
Which work hard.
A civil servant that earn 100k a month ,
It will take him 15 to 20 years of his salary to build a house and people will say work hard.
No rich men on earth made his money through legit ways.
Let us stop deceiving ourself here
Investments that finally paid off
High Paying jobs
Agency contract
Forex
Import/Export

There are many legal means by which one can make sudden money that cannot be made working as a civil servant. I for one has received large amounts of money far above my salary from 10years old investment. When I had this investment, I had no one naira in my pocket, but suddenly I now have alot of naira.

PoliticsRe: I Want To Properly Understand What Happened During The Biafran War by SammywritesNG: 4:20am On Dec 23, 2024
Kdon2:
Allow me to give you a brief summary of the Biafra war.
The Biafra war was a direct result of the first military coup of January 15, 1966 against the then civilian government. The civilian government was headed by a northerner tafawa balewa, with namdi azikiwe as executive president, Samuel akintola was premier (governor) southwestern region, ahmadu bello was premier northern region, michael okpara eastern region while dennis osadebay was premier Mid-Western region. The coup which was masterminded by ibo boys in army killed only northern and south west leaders sparing all ibo leaders including bamdi azikwe and micheal okpara among many major political figures of the time.

The Hausa boys in the army were enraged when ibos began to strategically manipulate the Nigeria system in order to dominate all other tribes. Then the Hausa Fulani group in the army carried out counter coup to remove the ibo man that was made the head of state after failure to address the issues raised by the northerners about the couo and the couo plotters more especially when ibos began to celebrate the death of tafawa balewa and ahmadu bello mocking their death with caricature of a goat among other diss.

Because the counter coup of July 1966 had many ibos slaughtered including the then military head of state aguyi ironsi, odimegwu ojukwu went to war to pull eastern Nigeria out of the Nigeria merger, since tge condition for peace demanded by him was not met by the government of yakubu Gowon which was installed by the aggrieved northern army boys behind the second coup.

This is the summary of how the Biafra war started. It however ended badly for the ojukwu Biafran side when they began advancing and Overunning Yoruba land of ore and moving towards Lagos because Yorubas that had chosen to be neutral were forced into the fight between hausa/Fulani army boys and ibos army boys with the threat on Yoruba land. Awolowo joined the yakubu Gowon federal government to clip the wing of the ibo guys. End of war!
I wouldn't encourage you to digest hook, line and sinker what people say on line about the civil war. Because for ages it is known that those who still run the government prospered a propaganda to shot every young off from knowing the truth. Which is why History was banned our schools.

I encourage you to read all the recommended books from different witnessing parties goto youtube and search for edmundobilo, he has a several eye witness series of interviews on the civil War topic. Alot of credible guests

PoliticsWho Qualifies To Run For Lagos State Governorship Elections by SammywritesNG(op): 11:59pm On Dec 01, 2024
Unraveling History, Demography, and Legal Provisions.

Lagos, the bustling metropolis of Nigeria, is not just the largest city in Africa by population but also the fourth-largest economy on the continent. With over 24 million residents, Lagos is a melting pot of cultures, ethnicities, and histories.

Recent debates about who can contest for the governorship of Lagos have reignited interest in the city's origins, its demographic makeup, and the legal criteria for contesting elections.

The First Inhabitants of Lagos
The story of Lagos begins with the Awori people, a sub-ethnic group of the Yoruba, who migrated from Ile Ife and settled in what we now call Lagos. They were primarily farmers, fishermen, and landowners, establishing themselves on islands and peninsulas under the leadership of Oloye Olofin. They named the area "Oko," but it later became "Eko" following an invasion by the Benin Empire in the 16th century.

The Benin Empire renamed the area and established a military presence, turning it into a strategic war camp. However, the Awori people, led by the Olofin, fiercely defended their land. Despite their efforts, Benin eventually established a more diplomatic foothold, leading to the appointment of Ashipa, an Awori chief, as the first Oba of Lagos.

In 1472, Portuguese explorers arrived, naming the area "Lagos," meaning "lakes." The city then became a hub for trade, particularly the Atlantic slave trade, fostering relations with European powers like Portugal and Brazil. Over time, Lagos grew from a small Awori settlement into a thriving kingdom and eventually into the economic powerhouse it is today.
