Sports / Mark Hughes: ‘manchester United Clearly Top Of The Pile’ by samsonsax: 10:29am On Sep 08, 2017
Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has backed Manchester United for the Premier League title this season, praising the “very strong” depth of Jose Mourinho’s squad.

The Red Devils have begun the new season in perfect fashion, winning their first three games by an aggregate 10-0 scoreline to sit top of the standings in its nascent phase.

The Potters, meanwhile, have had a mixed start with a loss, a draw and a win, although they did claim the scalp of Arsenal, a result that Hughes says should give them confidence when they welcome United to the bet365 on Saturday evening.

“Of all the teams [United] are clearly at the top of the pile,” Hughes told reporters at his pre-match press conference this morning. “Their performances and the way they’ve gone about their business has been impressive. We had similar situation last year with Man City, who were not able to sustain it, but the make up of the Man Utd squad is very strong and they’re playing in a way that their fans will take to and enjoy.

“They expect teams to attack with power and pace and ability. It’s very early days. Hopefully there are still things for us to exploit.

“These games are huge for us and we always enjoy them. We hope we can get a similar result that we did against Arsenal.

“They’ve got the pace of [Marcus] Rashford, the power and presence of [Romelu] Lukaku, the clever play of [Juan] Mata and [Henrikh] Mkhitaryan. These teams test you in a lot of ways.”

Hughes’s side twice held United to a 1-1 draw in the league last term.

Sports / Perez: I Would´ve Tried To Sign Messi At Madrid by samsonsax: 9:52am On Sep 08, 2017
Real Madrid president Florentino Perez revealed he would have tried to sign Lionel Messi as one of his Galacticos.

In his first stint at the helm of the LaLiga giants, Perez helped Madrid sign the likes of Zinedine Zidane, David Beckham, Ronaldo and Luis Figo.

The 70-year-old, who first took over as president in 2000, said Messi – who arrived at Barcelona in 2001, coming through the club’s youth academy to develop into one of the greatest players of all time – may have been one of those signings, if he had been at his current level then.

“If there had been a Messi in my first stage [as president], I would have gone after him,” Perez told Cadena SER.

“He is a type of player like Zidane.”

However, Perez said there was no chance of signing Messi now.

The Argentina international has won eight LaLiga titles and four Champions League crowns among numerous trophies at Barca, while claiming a record five Ballons d’Or.

“In my first stage, possibly,” Perez said. “He is now a Barca player.

“He has been there since he was a kid. It would be very difficult.”

Sports / Sporting Announce Details Of €29.5m Sale Of Silva To Leicester by samsonsax: 9:31am On Sep 08, 2017
Sporting CP have informed the Portuguese Securities Market Commission (CMVM) of a deal worth up to €29.5million to sell Adrien Silva to Leicester City.

Silva agreed his switch to the King Power Stadium on September 1, but Leicester reportedly missed the deadline by 14 seconds.

FIFA are believed to have consequently rejected the Portugal international’s registration, making it unclear as to whether he is eligible for the Premier League club, who are still hoping to find a resolution.

However, Sporting have communicated the details of the transaction to the CMVM.

Under the terms, the Portuguese side receive €20m up front, with €5m based on performance-related objectives and a further €4.5m relating to the contract extension the midfielder signed in February 2016.

Despite Sporting issuing the release, it remains unclear whether the Foxes will complete the deal if they are unable to register Silva until the next transfer window in January.

Silva started three Primeira Liga matches for Jorge Jesus’ side this season, as well as helping them secure a place in the Champions League group stage with a play-off victory over Steaua Bucharest.

The Euro 2016 winner was expected to fill the space left by Danny Drinkwater’s deadline-day departure to Premier League champions Chelsea.

Sports / Lukaku Does Not Fear Man Utd Competition With Ibrahimovic by samsonsax: 9:20am On Sep 08, 2017
Romelu Lukaku has no fear about battling Zlatan Ibrahimovic for a spot in the Manchester United line-up.

Lukaku has made an impressive start to life at United since his move from Everton in a reported £75million deal, scoring four goals in as many appearances.

However, he will have Ibrahimovic trying to take his place in the team when the Swede, who re-signed at Old Trafford on a one-year deal last month, returns from a knee injury in January.

But the Belgium international is not concerned about losing out, expressing his delight to have a player who has won 31 trophies during an illustrious career in the squad.

Asked if competition with Ibrahimovic could help him improve, Lukaku told the BBC: “Of course. You don’t fear the competition, you relish it.
“As long as it can make you better, make you win, you relish the challenge all the time.

“I think it [Ibrahimovic’s return] is really good for the team. It’s good to have another guy in the team that’s hungry to win trophies, that’s what we want at Manchester United.

“With his character, his personality and also his attributes as a football player he brings us a lot and we will try to help him.”

At Old Trafford, Lukaku is playing under Jose Mourinho, who sold him in 2014 during his second spell in charge of Chelsea. However, the 24-year-old is excited to have the chance to work with the Portuguese again.

“I wanted to play for him since I was 11 so when you get another chance like that you don’t turn it down and I’m really grateful for the second opportunity,” said Lukaku.

“He’s always been the same; a man that wants the best out of the players every day. He doesn’t give the players time to rest on the pitch, he really wants everyone to fight on the pitch and in training and that’s what I like about him.

“He’s someone you can talk to and whatever you say he’s going to listen to you, so I like that a lot.”

Sports / Dybala A Great Player, But Not A Barca Target – Bartomeu by samsonsax: 1:49pm On Sep 06, 2017
Barcelona have no plans to make a bid for Juventus star Paulo Dybala when the transfer window reopens, insists president Josep Maria Bartomeu.

With Neymar having completed a world-record transfer to Paris Saint-Germain, the Camp Nou club have been linked with a move for Argentina international Dybala.

The 23-year-old forward has impressed since joining the Bianconeri from Palermo in 2015, winning Serie A twice and helping Juve to reach the final of the Champions League last term.

But Bartomeu, who has come in for criticism following what was perceived to be a poor window for the club, claims his own admiration for Dybala will not lead to a move for his services.

“How do I look at Dybala? He’s a great player, but we’re happy with the team we have,” he told Tuttosport.

“He’s also a Juve player, and we have great respect for the Bianconeri and their president, Andrea Agnelli.”

Juve and Barca meet in Spain next Tuesday in the opening match of their respective Champions League campaigns.

Sports / ´clever´ Man United Beat The Neymar Effect – Mourinho by samsonsax: 11:26am On Sep 06, 2017
Jose Mourinho has lauded Manchester United’s “clever” work in the transfer window after landing key targets before Neymar’s eye-watering switch to Paris Saint-Germain transformed the market.

The United boss believes the Brazilian’s world-record move from Barcelona drove up prices across the board, meaning it paid dividends to get business done early.

By the time that £198million deal had been completed, Mourinho had already signed the likes of Romelu Lukaku (£75m) and Nemanja Matic (£40m) – players he claims would have cost a lot more later in the window.

“I think we were very clever,” the Portuguese told The Times.

“Normally the last part of the market is less expensive, but this season, after Neymar, everything changed – and changed for the worse in terms of prices.

“I think Lukaku on August 31 would have been £150million.
“Matic would have been £60million or £70million. Neymar changed everything.

“If the biggest transfer in history had still been [Paul] Pogba, I think Philippe Coutinho would now be in Barcelona at £101million

“But because we did it in the first part of the summer, it was much less.

“I think we did well in financial terms and well in preparation terms, getting them before the season started.

Sports / Mata Believes Man Utd Can Win The Premier League by samsonsax: 10:42am On Sep 06, 2017
Juan Mata is confident Manchester United have all the tools to challenge for the Premier League title this season, but warned that the team must not get carried away by their fine start to the season.

United finished sixth in Jose Mourinho’s first campaign at Old Trafford, but winning the Europa League secured them a return to the Champions League, while they also lifted the League Cup.

Mata believes the Red Devils will challenge for more silverware this term and thinks winning the league is a distinct possibility.

However, the Spain midfielder says United – who have won their opening three league games – must continue to show a high level of consistency to be among the chasing pack come May.

“The belief is always there. When you play for such a club you start every competition believing that you can win it,” said Mata.

“Some bad games didn’t allow us to win it last year, but we need to find that consistency that can make us fight in the last months and be one of those teams that will be up there.

“It’s the second year for the manager, he knows everyone better, we know each other better, so let’s try.

“We’re really pleased with our start, but it’s only a start. We’ve won three games with confidence and good football.”

Marcus Rashford has started two of United’s three Premier League matches so far and scored in England’s 2-1 win over Slovakia on Monday, with Mata tipping him for big things.

“From the first moment we saw him in training, we knew he was someone special,” Mata said.
“He is making it real scoring for us and England. He can be even bigger. He is a real threat. He has great qualities and the mentality to become a big, big player.”

Mata made headlines when he committed to giving one per cent of his salary to charity as part of the Common Goal project he is fronting.

Asked if any of his United players would be publicly backing the initiative, he said: “They will. I’m almost ready to say who. We have more players coming but it is step by step.

“The final idea would be for the whole professional industry commit, not just the footballers.

“Sometimes football can have a bad reputation but there are great people in football who are trying to help.

“I believe there are great values in football and, if this helps on that, then great.”
