Like what you said, one should always brush up one's skill while working as a freelancer in order to pay for some basic necessities.

For me I think the best way is to channel one's energy into passive income.

Freelancing is an active income. You earn money only when you work for it. But in passive income, you earn money when you are asleep.

The Pro tip should be work as a freelancer, then use your generated income to invest into passive income.

God forbid you fall sick; that means your freelancing business seizes to make money. Whereas, on passive income, even in your sick bed, you still make money.

So, as we learn new skills, we should also develop a mindset of having streams of income. And that can only be possible if we embrace passive income.

It's not easy though, but it's achievable.

I just got a hint from a friend who is also in the same boat with you. He was sent the same video call verification message.

Before the interview, he changed all his information back to that of Nigeria.(maybe except the name).

So, when he opted in for the interview he had no choice than to plead to the support that he was sorry for his action and that he has reverted back to his true nationality.

He also promised the platform that he is not going to do it again, but he going to be true to his nationality.

And you know what? It paid off. Upwork did not close his account.

So I wouldn't advise you to close the account just yet. Just try the above tip. Maybe it might work for you. You have been in the game, so you will know how to get clients even as a Nigerian.

That is great to hear. Even after posing as Native English speaker, it took me a week to get my first client.

How you approach the Job and tailor your proposal in a way that suit what the client is looking for might win you the job.

I have got client who would say, " I like your proposal, but can we start off with just a single content so that I can get a feel of your writing?"

So that goes a long way to say that three things counts in freelancing no matter the competition and nationality:

1. Great profile
2. High catchy proposal
3. And high quality work

You can choose any category of writing that deem fit to you and can also bid on any of them.

But you don't have show it on your profile that you are very good at all of them. Clients we see you as someone who is desperately waiting to devour any writing work that comes your way.

So, your cover up should be on your profile title.

You can tag it as: "prolific content writer, creative content writer, content that converts specialist," etc.

On the add-skill section, you can add related skill like :
Article writing, creative writing, content writing, copywriting, academic writing etc. They all speak the same language.

Then in your overview use top-notch description to convince client that you can help them to solve their problems.

Here is a proposal I used to get my current client. Well, it is a pinch of the entire proposal, but I think it will stand as a source of inspiration to you.

Don't copy word for word. Twist it to suit your taste.

Your profile overview needs some polishing. It's not competitive enough. You were talking more about yourself.

One mistake you made was that you didn't tell your client how you can help them in their project?

You also made another mistake by asserting that you are on the platform to build your career. Client wouldn't find that funny. They are in need of experts to make their project be in tip top shape.

Third one was you were sounding as if you were looking for job desperately. You were like "any writing job will do essay writing, research, article etc."

I would say that is not professional.

Why don't you position yourself as if you want to help them out in their project. Sound like a professional who wants to help clients solve their problems?


For example :

This also applies to your proposal. On Upwork, a well crafted proposal with the right work sample counts.

Another key thing is to make sure you research and see how other successful freelancers tailored their profile. That will give you an idea on how to go about it.

Upwork is pretty bias with this new development. If you want to register as a Nigerian, they will spill out some cock and bull story why your profile was not accepted.

But if you try to register using native English countries, their system will automatically accept you.

I think this is unfair!

Everyone of us with foreign accounts are just praying hard they shouldn't play this music to our direction.

Right now, I have a long term contract with a great client who is ready to spend good amount money on his project.

I don't want this Upwork thingy to come between this contract.

Please, any tip on how to wade off this thing would be great.

1. One tip I got but have not tried is make sure your profile is 100 percent complete before submitting it.

2. Use a very clear picture of yourself that aim more on your face. Sort of a passport.

3. Opt-in for skills that are part of Upwork in-demand skills. I heard Upwork is looking for freelancer in these genre.

4. After you have been accepted, revert back to your main skill.

I have not tried these tips but there is no harm in trying:
they might just work out for you.

For writers in the house, you got nothing to fear if Upwork closes your account. I believe you have worked for a good number of clients. And you know why they need contents for their business.

Majority of my clients need contents for affiliate marketing. Others for kindle publishing.

So guys, you can dive into this as well. With the right research and steps you will definitely hit the nail.

Please we need more tips on how we can survive these new development from Upwork.

What a touching story. The mistake you made was not setting up your Payment method. You'd recall that the very first day you earned your first money on Upwork, they automatically pop it up in your account that you should set up your payment method. But you failed to do that.

OK, the other mistake was because you left such an amount there on Upwork without setting up a payment method. That would have raised up some eye brow from upwork. They might be saying, "who is this person that has this kind of amount but has refused to withdraw it and also refused to set up a payment method. We'd like to know him."

Another thing I think that would have still triggered this is maybe you are not using a VPN to cover up your ass. These maybe the reason why they smelt a rat in your account.

Well, these are my thoughts though.

Upwork respects hardwork. And they reward handsomely. That is why you will see tips and tricks on their platforms on how to get clients. They also respect their freelancers. I don't think they will deprive you of your hard earned money.

As long as they didn't say anything about withdrawals and closure of account. They just said you can't bid for more jobs. Well, that is kind of OK.

What you need to do is this: try and withdraw your money first. You can use payooneer as a payment method. All you need to do is to discuss to trusted exchangers on how to go about it. They will surely be of help and you will get your money easily within minutes.

When you are done with the withdrawal, don't fall for their bait yet. Continue your work with the client until it ends. But before it ends, rinse and repeat the withdrawal process for your funds. But this time, let your maximum limit be $500-600 not to raise some eyebrow.

Just imagine if you can't access that funds, Jesu...that wan na die o.
So, always play safe since you are masquerading in the platform. And also use UK VPN to cover up your I. P.

Your method of submission doesn't matter. You will get your money. The money is with Upwork and not the client. He will surely initiate payment to you. But you can still submit using the request platform.

Hi guys!

I need your help on this one. I recently did a job for a client who was Okay with the job. He gave me his feedback that he was fine with the content.

The problem I am having right now was that when I was submitting the article, I didn't use the Upwork submission that gives client maximum of 2 weeks to review your work. I decided to use the attached file to submit the article in the message area/platform.

The major reason I did that was because I thought the nigga would ask me for a review or revision on the content.

It has been a week now, the client has not released the milestone for me to make withdrawals. I tried sending him a message reminding him of the milestone. And it's been three days now, but got no answer from him.

What should I do?

Should I resend the content using upwork submission platform? My fear is that this action may be too rude and desperate. I might end up losing the nigga.

Or should I fold my hands and wait for him to release the milestone when he is ready( I kind of need money now ).

Please guys what do you think I should do? I'm counting on your advice!

In fact I've made up my mind that anytime I am going to submit any article to any client I'm going to be using the submission platform. I don't care if they have suggestions about the article or not.

There's one thing I've learnt about freelancing, and from top freelancers like Stagger. They will come for you whether you are from Nigeria or from Kuvukiland as long as you know your stuff really well. So using the US as your nationality merely gives you transient advantages.

Between September 25th and October 10th, I received 26 invitations to job of which I rejected about a dozen which I was either not interested in or didn't match my skills. Western clients will always come for you when you have a lot of 5 star reviews, 100% Job Success Score and rapid response rate. And yes, they even give bonuses too.

So keep a really appealing profile, do aneat job, and watch them come for you. Be successful!!!
