The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) at the weekend arrested a Malian and four Nigerians in connection with illegal sales of 4,580kgs of psychotropic drugs in Kano. The seized drugs, comprising 2,592kgs of codeine cough syrups and 1,988kgs of Tramadol were recovered from five secret warehouses located within the metropolis by officers of the Kano State command. The arrest, according to NDLEA spokesman, Mitchel Ofoyeju, was part of efforts to reduce the sales and demand for psychotropic substances in the state. Kano State Commander of the NDLEA, Mr. Hamza Umar gave the names of the suspects as Ikechukwu Ukwuoma, 34, arrested with 2,010kgs of codeine cough syrups; Nura Ibrahim, 30, caught with 886kgs of Tramadol and Zakari Muhammadi, a Malian found with 850kgs of Tramadol. Others were Ernest Asogwa, 34, caught with 582kgs of codeine syrup and Ikenna Osuizugba, 34, found in possession of 252kgs of tramadol. The abuse of psychotropic drugs such as codeine cough syrup and tramadol is prevalent among young people and married women in the state. Ikechukwu Ukwuoma, a secondary school certificate holder, who is married with three children, is one of the major distributors of codeine cough syrups in the state. Ikechukwu, who hails from Orlu Local Council of Imo State, said that he was in the business to make money. http://m.guardian.ng/news/ndlea-arrests-malian-four-nigerians-with-4-580-kg-of-drugs-in-kano/

A woman, Mrs. Deborah Akinyemi, has said she is the mother of the late Modupe Taiwo killed on Tuesday during the wild anti-impeachment protest by supporters of Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, in Efon Alaaye Local Government Area of the state. A woman who introduced herself as Mrs. Apeke Olaya had told journalists at the Government House on Wednesday that she was the mother of the deceased. She also mentioned one Mr. Gabriel Ogundele, a member of the Ekiti State House of Assembly, as the alleged killer. But Mrs. Akinyemi who spoke with journalists in Efon Alaaye on Friday said Mrs. Olaya was an aunt of the deceased and not the mother as she claimed. While exonerating Ogundele as the alleged killer, she said Olaya, whom she said was a PDP member went to the Government House where she spoke with journalists without informing the family. “I don’t know who killed my son. I don’t know; I can’t say. They were saying it was one lawmaker that killed my son, how can that be? “I last saw him (the decaesed) two days before his death. He was born in May 1982. His colleagues said he was among those protesting. “The woman that came to the Government House was just his aunt. I’m his true mother. She (Mrs. Olaya) went there without the knowledge of the family.” Mrs. Akinyemi said she had the deceased from her first marriage before his father was killed during a political violence involving members of the National Party of Nigeria and Unity Party of Nigeria in 1983. “I was shocked when the woman came to tell me she had gone to claim she was the mother. She didn’t bring anything to me, but I know she is a member of the PDP. “I have not seen his corpse since then. My son is irreplaceable. There is nothing I can do as a poor widow, but I have left vengeance for God,” she added. www.punchng.com/news/true-mother-of-ekiti-violence-victim-shows-up/ |

The National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Chief Gani Adams, has said the group is not supporting any of the presidential candidates contesting the February 14 election. The OPC leader, who was represented by the Assistant General Secretary of the group, Lasun Ogunfowokan, said this in Ile Ife on Friday at the sideline of a quiz organised by the OPC for students in Osun State. He stated that the group was not supporting President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buahari (retd.) and other contestants. Adams added that his faction of OPC was not partisan and would not support any of the candidates against the others. He said, “We are not partisan. The OPC led by Chief Gani Adams is made up of freedom fighters. We are not supporting any of the presidential candidates. “But we are calling on all our members and other Nigerians to go and collect their permanent voter cards to enable them to participate in the general elections.” He urged the Yoruba people to be united and shun politics of bitterness for development to continue in the region. Speaking earlier at the quiz, he lamented the way some Yoruba were relegating the language to the background, saying this could endanger the existence and usage of the Yoruba culture. According to him, many Yoruba parents do not care if their children fail Yoruba in public examinations while criticising the nonchalant attitude of many Yoruba people to lack of proficiency in the language. Before Wednesday, January 7, 2015, the regular refrain among the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, leadership in Cross River State was, “there is no opposition in Cross River state” but the rally held by the All Progressives Congress, APC, on the above date has seemingly changed the political language and equation in the state. APC The rally, which was organised as one of the campaign stops of Major General Muhamadu Buhari (retd), the APC presidential candidate, attracted an unprecedented crowd of supporters which no opposition party has been able to muster in the past 16years of the present political dispensation and this marks a significant tipping point in the political affairs of the state From all parts of the expansive state, crowds of the party’s faithful converged on the Mayne Avenue Primary School, venue of the rally as early as 9 am singing and dancing while awaiting the arrival of Buhari and his entourage whose delayed flight arrived the Margaret Ekpo International Airport , where another large crowd of supporters was waiting for him, at about 4pm before proceeding to the rally centre. Many political watchers in the state were taken aback by the large turnout of supporters judging from the near comatose position of the APC and other opposition parties in the state. Following their persistent battering by the forces of the ruling PDP right from the days of Mr Donald Duke who during his eight years tenure consistently wooed over many members of the opposition parties while those who remained adamant were decimated politically. From being the majority with 13 out of the 25members in the State House of Assembly in 1999, the APC then called APP went down to zero in the 2003 elections as all those who contested elections for the positions of chairmen of councils, Senate, House of Representatives, State House of Assembly and even councilors on the party’s platform lost woefully until 2011 when Ernest Irek, a member of the PDP who lost nomination to Mr Fabian Okpa crossed over to the then ACN and won Okpa in the general election to become the House of Assembly member representing Obubra 11 State Constituency. The cantankerous outcome of the party’s state executive council election of the party in 2014 did not help matters as some staunch members were expelled leaving many people disgruntled. However, like the proverbial kiwi which rises from its ashes, the party found its foot back in the months of November and December 2014 with the influx of some PDP members following the acrimonious outcome of the PDP primaries and this significantly boosted the ranks of the party. Effectively, with the entry of defectors from PDP, the party which in 2011 could hardly present candidates for elections in half of the constituencies was able to fill every vacant position as many people, particularly the PDP renegades fell over themselves to pick the party’s tickets to contest elections for the various positions. So most of these candidates unlike the dead woods of the past were able to muster resources to ferry their supporters from across the state to the rally venue. Elective positions With the large turn out and the enthusiasm on the faces of most of the candidates an d their supporters, the state is set for a strong battle for elective positions beginning from the House of Assembly to the governorship and the presidential election. The party may, however, need a miracle to win the governorship slot owing to strong political calculations and indices that prevail in the state. But to say the party would lose all the positions it has fielded candidates has always been the situation in the past , would not be a wrong assessment of the political situation in the state. The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the PDP as a victim of self-inflicted paranoia following the ruling party’s panic reaction to a yet to be conducted opinion poll. In a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the party said the PDP has only succeeded in committing an unforced error by its frenzied reaction, which is understandable considering the fact that the party is being pounded from all sides by both seen and unseen forces. ”The PDP is behaving like a punch-drunk boxer, who started flailing at everything and everyone but his opponent, having being disoriented by a staccato of body blows. Had it not been so, a party that is urging a focus on serious campaign issues would not have picked on the imaginary outcome of a public opinion poll,” it said. PDP Special National Convention: Delegates casting their votes at PDP Special National Convention . Photo by Gbemiga Olamikan. APC said the PDP is not in a position to advise anyone on the conduct of opinion polls, when all it has engaged in over the years have been doctored and incestuous opinion polls. ”It is said that he who must come to equity must come with clean hands. It is apparent that this dictum is lost on the petrified PDP. This is a party that has been celebrating the outcome of the regular polls by the NOI Polls, when it is glaring that the brain behind this poll is a key Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. NOI stands for the initials of this Minister, and discerning Nigerians are aware of this. ”Because the NOI polls have been doctored to achieve a pre- determined end, the PDP made itself to believe it was doing well all along, when indeed it was leading Nigeria to a dark alley of economic and infrastructural collapse, massive unemployment as well as pervasive and unprecedented insecurity. ”Now that the die is cast and even the most ardent supporters of the PDP have realized that the game is up and are jumping off its sinking ship, the party has come to realize its folly. How then can such a party advise another party on how to conduct a public opinion poll? ”Even without any poll, Nigerians have come to realize that the Presidential Candidate of the APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, stands head and shoulders above his PDP counterpart not only physically but in terms of integrity, capability, vision, achievements and antecedents. Since these are the issues that will count during the forthcoming polls, the PDP can as well start learning how to be in opposition,” the party said. It lambasted the PDP for casting aspersion on the integrity of the media by saying the APC is ”intensifying effort to compromise some section of the media”. ”The PDP has consistently shown nothing but disdain for the media, which was at the forefront of the fight for the democracy that the do-nothing folks at the PDP are now enjoying, undeservedly. If the media was so easy to compromise, it would have been compromised a long time ago and perhaps Nigeria would not have benefited from its selfless battle against military dictatorship. ”This lesson is lost on the trifling PDP, hence it has continued to hold the media in disdain, the latest instance of which is the unnecessary accusation of its being compromised. Our honest advice to those who did nothing when the epic battle to install this democracy was going on, but are now pretending to be its custodians, is that they should not crash it on the altar of careless, inciting and offensive statements,” APC said.[img]The All Progressives Congress (APC) has described the PDP as a victim of self-inflicted paranoia following the ruling party’s panic reaction to a yet to be conducted opinion poll.
