“Papa, papa,” Purity called as she climbed
out of her car. She half walked and half ran
into her father’s massive duplex.
There was a beech decidous tree in the
middle of the large compound. Carnation
flowers were planted around it, decorating
the tree. The sweet scent of the carnation
flowers filled the air.
Purity sniffed in the air, oh how much she
loved the scent, this wasn’t the time for
that. She got to the doorstep and flung the
door open without knocking. This is my
papa’s house. The rotound figure of her
father came into view. He was dressed in a
grey Armani suit, a glass of champagne on
his left hand. He was handsome. The
figures of others in the sitting room with him
was now clear. There was a party or
something like that. Her father had guests.
Purity didn’t bother looking at them or
greeting them, she just sternly gazed at her
father.
“Papa, we need to talk!”
“How rude, Purity.” Theodore reprimanded
his daughter, “I have guests.”
“Now, papa!”
Purity dragged herself into an inner room.
Her father was right, she would have said hi
to the guests, she wasn’t willing to. She’d
have to show this man that she was a
strong headed woman.
“I’m sorry about my daughter’s insolent
attitude,” Aaron apologised, “She must have
something on her mind. She doesn’t usually
act this way. Please, excuse me.” He
handed the glass of champagne to the bar
tender and turned to leave his guests.
He met Purity in on of the interior rooms. He
wasn’t pleased with her. “What has gotten
into you?” he questioned.
She rolled her eyes, “Papa, you promised
me, you said you’d never decide for me
anymore; I’d make my own decisions. Why
did you do this?” her vision was beginning to
get blurry.
Aaron Theodore remained silent for a while.
“That’s the reason you couldn’t even greet
your papa? Purity, where are your manners?”
“I sent them to hell the moment you told me
you’ve chosen a partner for me!”
“You promised to behave.”
“You promised not to do it.”
“I’m sorry, Purity. I had no other choice.”
“I don’t understand.”
“We have some little problems. You know
that. Our merging with the Broderick’s will
do a great deal of help.”
“You want me to marry an old man?” she
asked almost in shock.
“Nope. His son. His heir.”
“Papa, you are close to this man, right?”
“Yeah.”
“Why not let him help you. You can merge
the companies without this marriage.” Purity
suggested, hopefully.
“I want the marriage. It has a lot more
advantages then just merging without it.”
“Papa,” she cried out, “You hate me! I’m like
a toy to you, right? You want to use me as
an instrument to save your business?” the
tears fell.
“No, no. Purity, its best for you.”
This man had made up his mind. d–n! This
tears can’t even make him change his mind.
“What’s his name?”
“Jeremy Broderick. His family and ours once
lived in the same neighbourhood.”
“What? Jeremy? No, papa, no! I refuse to
marry him.”
Jeremy, she never liked him for once. He
almost took advantage of her when they
were much younger and now he was to be
her husband? Never! If he thinks he’ll he her
now, he must be hallucinating.
“He’s the right guy for you,” Aaron answered
innocently.
“I hate him. Never will I marry him.”
“You didn’t like him then, you will now.”
“No! Never!”
“I’d disinherit you!” Aaron warned.

Romance / My Warri Boyfriend (a Short Story) by sandybae(f): 11:09am On Jun 21, 2016 |
It was a beautiful morning Around Water
resources area in warri. I put on my normal
bathroom slippers, took of my hair net and
entered my mum’s room.
“Mummy, I’m ready, give me the money for
the akara”…she complied .
I waited patiently at the crowded akara
joint. There was something special about
Mama Tega’s, No one could ever have
enough of it. My brother will always say
“that woman dey use juju, she go soon
confess”. I always laughed at his
speculation.
Tega! T-ee-gaaaa!.. Bring the beans na, his
Mother yelled.
I was anxious to see Tega, I had always
imagined he will look very fat because of his
consumption of too much akara.
I was sooo wrong..A well built, Gorgeous
looking guy came in with a bowl of ground
beans. Wow! I exclaimed, this guy seems to
be different from other warri boys, he’s
calm, and obedient…
My thoughts were rudely interrupted
Abeg…I don drop the beans o! No shout my
name Like that again o. I didn’t want to
believe it, so I looked Around to know the
source of the rude warning. I was so
disappointed.
I collected my akara and started walking
home. Hey! my friend…please excuse me!
I didn’t want to…But I stopped ( The power
of cuteness)
…..
We eventually exchanged contact details,
But I severely warned him never to come to
my house or be ready to face dire
consequences, considering the fact that I
had a very strict dad and two giant sized
dogs that were not afraid to bite…or kill!
Hello? who is this?, I queried the caller.
Babe, na me o, you nor get my Number
again sef? Tega asked. ooh! Sorry, my
phone is having some caller identity
difficulties. Hmmn! grammer! you be English
teacher? shwoo? wetin sef. I was stunned, I
wanted to ask if we were quarelling,
because of his aggressive response. I’m not
a teacher o! I replied. So Wen we fit see na,
you know say I dey gbadu you, why you just
dey do me Like this na? Sorry I dnt know
When I can see you…bye. I hung up.
I almost laughed my stomach off, When I
remembered his question. I thought to
myself ” this guy is very funny and he is
kinda cute, very soon we’ll be moving out of
warri, maybe I could use him as a sort of
time-killer”.
The idea sounded Like a Good one, so I
carried it out. Tega and I started dating. But
I was soon to find out that there was more
to Tega thàn meets the the eye, or even
ear.
….
Tega and I eventually became a couple, one
that was envied by his friends and mine.
We were 1 month gone but I still hadn’t told
him we were moving out soon.
Tega called me to meet him at a
supermarket around the street. Since my
dad wasn’t home,I obliged. I had never been
to his house, because I was scared of being
raped, my mother would always tell me ” if
you follow a man to his house alone,he will
rape you and then you will get pregnant, and
your daddy will kill you, remember he has
three other daughters ” I began to
remember this advice on my way to the
supermarket. On getting there, Tega
persuaded me to go with him further down
the street. I was scared, so I declined.
“wetin sef? ehn? no be my babe you be?
why you com dey gyrate because I talk say
make you follow me? ” replied a furious
Tega. He had a really cute frown(or So I
thought ) and he had the habit of bursting
out in pidgin when angered. I agreed to
follow him after he apologized. The farther
we walked, the louder my mum’s voice
began to sound in my head.
Eventually, we got to our destination ; a
wedding dress shop.
He pointed at the Jewellery section and
asked me to make my choice. I reluctantly
Did,because I wasn’t in the habit of taking
gifts from guys. Since he was my very first
boyfriend, I obliged. I was surprised at his
gesture, I felt like a queen. On our way our
of the shop,he pointed at a wedding dress
and said “that’s the next thing am gonna
get you”.
Few days later. I saw Tega at a recording
studio, he said he was working on producing
a single. He had a darn good voice, but I
had a problem with his song lyrics, they
were all about swag and money. I teased
him about this. We laughed over it. I felt
really comfortable around him, he had a lot
of light in him, he was a really nice guy. I
changed my plan to use him as a time killer,
I fell in love with him..But I noticed he was
always in a hurry to do things.
It was two weeks before were to move. I
called Tega ,but unlike him, there was no
response. After 2 days, I decided to pay him
a visit.
I still shiver when I remember what I was
told that day . Tega is dead! he died
because he had leukemia…. his mourning
mother replied.
I couldn’t believe it,my love was gone just
like that. His mother brought a note he left
for me .it read:
” Mrs English teacher, fear -fear smalli, I
love u sha. Thank you for putting light in my
life, you’re the seewtest thing ,since my
mother’s akara. Wish we didn’t have to end
this way”
we eventually moved out ,but I learnt
something from my experience with Tega.
” Never be with someone just to use and
dump them, always show love to those who
love you. You Never can tell when they will
go”. 1 Like |

She was sitting alone at the coffee shop. He
had just walked in to get something too.
And there he saw his ex girlfriend, sitting
across the table sipping on coffee. Within a
second, she saw him too. Their eyes met,
and thousands of memories flashed by in a
single millisecond. The days and nights of
laughter, the heavenly times they spent
together, the romantic moments, the bitter
sweet fights and the long hours of constant
talking that they did and finally that ugly
night, when they had the biggest fight and
couldn’t bear to be in the same room also.
She packed her bags and left that day. It all
flashed by in their minds. Gathering some
strength, the guy walked towards her and
sat opposite her on the same table. She
looked at him with a blank expression, not
knowing what to say, for it had been almost
two months since they broke up and she
didn’t know where he was in his life.
Finally the guy mustered up some courage
and started speaking:
Guy – How are you?
Girl – I am fine. How are you doing?
(Nervously)
Guy – I am fine too. It’s been a long time.
Girl – Yes, it indeed has. Hope life is
treating you well.
Guy – Life has not been the same.
Girl – It has only become better, you mean?
(Sarcastically)
Guy – Are you trying to hurt me?
Girl – I never wanted to….
Guy – Then why did you? (Angrily)
Girl – I thought being with me was a pain –
you said…I just wanted you to be pain free
and happy.
Guy – You think now I am happy?
Girl – I don’t know …..
Guy – Are you happy?
Girl – (Looking at the coffee cup) I am
trying my best to be.
Guy – do you have somebody in your life?
Girl – How does that matter anymore?
Guy – Just answer me.
Girl – It doesn’t matter…I am sure you must
have found someone though.
Guy – How can you be so sure?
Girl – I am happy for you, in case you have.
Guy – (Looking at the girl) Look in my eyes
and say that you are happy to see me with
someone else.
Girl – (looks at the guy) I don’t need to
prove anything.
Guy – yes, you need to. You need to prove
that you “don’t” love me.
Girl – I dd….d…on’t Love you.
Guy – Say that you didn’t miss me even
once in these two months
Girl – I ddd….didn’t miss you even once…
(Tear start rolling down her eyes)
Guy – (Wiping off her tear) this says it all….
Girl – What do you mean…?
Guy – I know you still love me and you have
not stopped missing me…
Girl – Then why didn’t you ever call me?
Guy – Because you left me alone….
Girl – I left you because you said living with
me was a pain…
Guy – Because of an incident, I said
something in anger. Did I never tell you how
living with you made me a better man? Did I
never tell you that being with you makes me
the happiest person alive? Did I never tell
you that I enjoy every bitter sweet fight we
have had? Did I never tell you that I want to
make things work, no matter what. Did I
never tell you…that I want to be with you
forever?
Girl – You…did… (Tears start rolling down
her cheeks) … I’m sorry… I left you because
of something you said in anger..
Guy – (holding her hand) … I am sorry, I
said that…I am sorry that I didn’t stop you…
and I am sorry that I didn’t get in touch with
you for these two months, and I am sorry to
say that, you will have to bear with this jerk
for your entire life…(sliding a diamond ring
in her finger)
Girl -..W..what..
Guy – marry me. In these two months, I
realized what I am without you, and how bad
life could get. I don’t want to lose you ever
again. Today is Valentine’s Day and I just
want to ask you one thing; would you be my
valentine forever?
Girl – Yes, yes of course. … (Smiling and
wiping her tears off) |

Afraid To Love….Episode 1
“This can’t be happening!” cried Purity. She
stared into space with disbelief and shock
written all over her face.
“No, no,” she mumbled, looking around her
office.
This man had carried out his threat. Who
could have thought he would actually do it?
Aaron Theodore was full of surprises and
behaved like the Devil himself. She was a
grown woman, old enough to make her
decisions and do whatever she pleases.
Now, this man – her papa, had chosen a
husband for her. How could he?
Aaron Theodore had indeed surprised her.
This man promised not to meddle in her
private life anymore. Right from when she
was a child to being an adult, she had never
lived a life of her own- all she had done was
to please her papa, doing things the way he
wanted. Now, she grew up. She’s no more
the baby of the home, she can make her
decisions and do whatever please her. d–n
this man! She wasn’t living for him. And he
couldn’t dictate whom she’d marry, she’d
show him.
The door opened, a young woman of about
twenty-six popped her head in, then walked
in. She was dressed in a grey suit. The skirt
was mini- above her kneels which revealed
straight beautiful legs, they were longer than
their actual length ’cause she wore a four
inches stilleto. Her hair was tied in a
ponytail. Her lips shone, painted with a
colourless lip gloss. Her lashes were tick.
She smiled brightly and looked Purity in the
eye. Her eyes were stunning.
“Heather!” Purity snapped as she caught
sight of her secretary. “You can’t knock or
you forgot your manners?” she was now
sounding like a b—h.
“I…I did …knock.” Heather stammered.
“There…was…no…no response.”
“Are you saying I’m deaf?” Purity glared at
her.
“No! I came to give you the files you’ve
been asking for.” she was embarrassed.
“I’m in no mood for such! Get that file and
your walking stick body out of my office!”
Purity ordered.
In a flash, Heather was out of her office.
She ran out with tears welled up in her
eyes.
Purity, what the hell is wrong with you! You
just made your secretary cry. You’re a
witch. A voice in her head scolded her.
She didn’t care. Her father got her into this.
She’d beat him to his game.
She stared at her cherry desk, her fingers
wandered on it. She took a pen from the
pen holder and scribbled something on a
notepad. Grabbing hold of the telephone on
her desk, she called her secretary.
“Heather,” she called out when the call was
answered. “I’m sorry. Please cancel all my
appointments today. I’ve got something to
do.” she hung up.
Purity felt guilty talking to Heather that way.
She must have knocked but Purity failed to
hear it ’cause she was too busy with her
thoughts. It wasn’t the poor girl’s fault. It
was hers.
Purity groaned, carried her purse and left
the office room. She did not look at
anyone’s face, she just walked out of
Theodore’s enterprises- the third richest
business company in the world. She was the
CEO, no one would dare question her.
Her usual smile wasn’t there, a frown
replaced it. She didn’t bother about it, didn’t
care. All that was on her mind now was to
face Aaron Theodore and let him know she
was no more a child, but a full grown
woman who decides what to do with her
life. No one was going to mess with her life.
No on, not even her parents.
She slid into the driver’s seat of her silver
volvo XC60 wheels, flung her purse in the
front passenger’s seat. She put the key in
the ignition hole and started car. Slowly, she
joined the highway.

“You must be joking father,” Jeremy laughed
and shook his head.
His father- Edwin Broderick gave him a
grave look. “I’m being serious here. Purity
Theodore is to be your wife. You will see
her tomorrow, court her and marry her.”
“Father! Why should I marry her?” Jeremy
threw at his father, sarcastically.
“She’s my choice. Besides, her father and
me are close pals. They once lived in our
neighbourhood, remember?” he raised a
brow.
Jeremy scratched his head, trying to
remember. Then it came! The little girl who
lived in his neighborhood when he was a kid.
He’d liked her a certain time and tried to be
nice to her, be friends with her but she was
very rude to him. She felt she was a
princess, she was the last and only daughter
of the Theodore’s. Dam! He was rich too
and more powerful then she. He began
despising her since then, she must be a
beautiful woman now. He had forgotten all
about her, till this moment.
“Purity? No father, I can’t marry her.
Dammit! I can’t even have her as my friend
or dare, you’d now expect me to have her
as my wife? Holy s–t! NO!”
Edwin Broderick laughed at his son’s
outburst. “I know she used to tease you
back then. I assure you, she has changed.
You’d get to like her.”
“Father, I can’t.” Jeremy pleaded.
“Its final. You two should be married for a
year, then you can divorce if you want to.
My word is final. Think about it, son.”
Edwin patted his son’s shoulder and left him
all by himself.
