Business / Follow These Seven Planning Tips To Become A Better Entrepreneur by sanod(m): 10:37am On May 17, 2016
What comes to mind when the term entrepreneur is mentioned to many people is the word ‘boss’. To those people, the allure of being in charge of one’s own destiny is enough to inspire them to want to be an entrepreneur. But what many do not even realise or take seriously is planning. Planning represents one of the most important aspects of entrepreneurship and if not taken seriously could, lead to demise of a business. Whether you are setting up a new business venture or undertaking a new project in an already established one, planning is not something young can take lightly. Consider these ten qualities of the ideal entrepreneur and apply them to make you a better one.

1. Survey a new a business venture first
Even though it is a universally acknowledged fact that the best entrepreneurs have the best ‘hunches’, the truth is, they don’t just act on hunches alone. A real entrepreneur does not start a business venture without taking a survey. A business idea is first validated with a feasibility study before commencing. While the survey may not ultimately guarantee the success of the business, it does give a clear overview of what one is likely to encounter in the course of operation. A survey helps the entrepreneur to know the likely competitions, projected profitability of a business venture.

2. Take into account the demography of your target customers
Taking into account the demography of prospective customers is very important in the planning process. Imagine designing the whole product around people of age 40-60 and ultimately realising after launch that people of age 18-35 adopted it more, bad for business right? Taking a survey prior to designing the minimum viable product helps in curtailing the rejection of an unwanted product. An insight into the demography of target customer will also help the entrepreneur in designing the method of reaching the prospective customers.

3. Establish a contingency account
Before you start a business, you will need to have an estimate of the amount required to get the project to certain stage. The start-up cost is necessary to see the business through the stage before eventually reaching profitability. When you have concluded how much money you will need, it is advisable that you add a ‘contingency’ budget to the total amount. The contingency account is 5% to 10% of the established start-up costs. For example, if you have concluded that you will need $10,000 to start your business, make sure that you start your business with at least $11,000 in capital.

4. Establish budget for initial months’ expenses
Start-ups realities can be really frustrating at times because most don’t make income during the first few months of operation. This is why there is need to budget for the first few months of no income so as cover some expenses such as salary, utilities, rent etc.

5. Decide on modes of receiving payment
How should your customers pay you? When choosing a mode of payment, you have to make sure that your payment choice is available and accessible to your target customers. What works for start-ups in Nigeria may not be feasible for start-ups in some other countries. Majority of Nigerian consumer will rather prefer to cash to online payment as this is not a totally trusted mode of payment yet. We hope the story changes with the introduction of paystack though. In which case, you may need to offer multiple payment methods.

6. Study law
By study law, I don’t mean literally become a lawyer, but know the laws of any country or state you plan to launch a product. I first got a glimpse of who Strive Masiyiwa was when the truth of how Econet wireless was chased abruptly out of Nigeria surfaced. But I later found out what a great inspiration he is in the development of entrepreneurship. One of the hallmark of his entrepreneurial sojourn is that is that he studies the law that governs business operations in every country or region that he has plans to set up a venture. Perhaps that was why he was able to defeat his foes after many years of dragging the case that led to his dismissal at the helm of econet Nigeria. When you know, you are cognisant of how business is run in a particular domain. For those selling products in different countries, knowing the law also helps in preparing what to offer as some products may be considered illegal in some countries.

7. Plan an effective entry into the market
After designing the final product, the most crucial aspect lies with reaching and retaining the customers who will pay for your product or services. How do you get the desired coverage for your product? You have to become a friend of the media, how do you become a friend of the media? You have to know what the journalist loves to write on. Not every media personalities may be inclined to write about your product just for the single reason of disruptiveness. When you enter the market, make sure that you are noticed. Unless you are noticed, your business may not get customers. How do you do this? In an online setting, online merchants usually use the following methods: Press Release submissions, Social Media advertisement, sponsored advertisement, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), email marketing, popups, and others.

Business / How He Found The Courage To Start And Run His Businesses by sanod(m): 11:01pm On Mar 25, 2016
Have you ever wanted to do something really important with your life? Right; I recognise the feeling. It wasn’t easy for me to quit my job as well, but a part of me really needed to take that next step.

You know, after the glow of my NYSC wore off, I wondered if I had made a huge mistake following a friend to a small town where I didn’t fit in. I went from a city socialite; studied physics to being a farmer, marooned on an island of Soya beans. You can imagine how I felt when I was offered a job in engineering company. I just jumped at the chance, it was such an exciting time in my life. Forwarded days, I came home on a very weekend, and discovered the river near a house was rising, so I pulled on work boots and went down to the river with the friend. We started throwing sandbags, we worked all night holding back the wall of water. When the sun rose, I got to tell 15 families that it was safe to go home again. I didn’t know what my purpose really was until that rainy day. I just needed only to look deep inside myself and find the lost me.

The smile made me really and really think how important what we did to countable number of these families, plus the joy derived from seeing the smile on their faces. Sometimes the hardest save to make is not a stranger in a burning building, is the closest soul to you. We all need to be honest with ourselves, because every person was born with instinct ultimately to create a balance with nature and that’s ultimately yourself.
Fearlessness, if that’s the right word, came from a burning desire to make my own path and not be subject to the whims of a boss’ poor business decision or a job loss to the poor economy. If I fail, it is on my head, not someone else. That’s really the thinking that pushed me to now having four different businesses.

I had an interesting twitter conversation with BENEFiT (@BenefitAfrica) that made me realize some things and pull this story for entrepreneur wannabes: Sometimes you just need someone to believe in you to find the courage in yourself to overcome your fears. This is why looking for a supporting friend or community is so essential.

Think and do something every morning that you will never give up on, let that attitude drives you to acquirement. Were you ever fortunate enough to sight Southern Cross? These are five stars arranged in cross form. I read Magellan used them to find true south whenever he got lost. It gave him a strength to keep going. Do yourself a good too, find a motivation, keep going and don’t relent in your quest!

Business / Governor El-rufai Just Gave Us "Renewed Optimism" About Entrepreneurship In Nige by sanod(m): 11:01am On Jan 25, 2016
The story towards the growth of the entrepreneurship is still a long way off we must say. At a time of dwindling oil prices, increasing poverty rate, lack of or absolutely no diversification from oil dependent economy, there have been incessant downsizing at many oil companies even affecting the top giants like shell and chevron shutting down operations which has inevitably affected lots of workers. The rest of the world seem to be moving towards a non-oil dependent economy, as seen from the government and private sector collaboration in most of these countries. Many schools of thought in Nigeria have also argued that Nigeria needs a diversion away from total dependence from oil, but a move towards the proposed goal has been extremely slow if it exists at all. Many of these proposals have been base on movement towards agriculture-based economy. A proposal towards moving to the agriculture-based economy, unfortunately will not solve the problem, not entirely at least.

Promoting entrepreneurship programs towards enhancing self-sustainability is the way forward for the Nigerian economy and by extension, the unemployed youths of the country. Entrepreneurship as we know it encompasses designing, launching and running a business. It requires the willingness to develop, organize and manage a new business venture along with associated risks for the purpose of generating profit. Most of these traits seems to lacking in most youth of the country.

Just as every single endeavor faces its own problem, entrepreneurship development has its own problems too. A report published by Mustapha A.I., Yunusa Umaru, and Dr Pelemo I.F. ‘’CHALLENGES OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AS PERCEIVED BY UNDERGRADUATE OF TERTIARY INSTITUTION IN KADUNA STATE’’ of the department of Educational Psychology and Counselling, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria highlighted some of the problems confronting entrepreneurship in Nigeria ranging from lack of capital, poor government support, lack of skills, inadequate facilities and equipment for teaching and learning entrepreneurship, poor knowledge based economy among others. Even where little capital is available to start business, many of them do not survive the test of time due in large part to poor government support and requisite training to run the startups. Although the research was conducted in Kaduna sate, it is however a reflection of the situation in most parts of the country.

That was why we at BENEFiT were elated when the Kaduna state government, through Kaduna Startup and Entrepreneurship Program (KADSTEP) some days back announced a 12 week curriculum designed to prepare the entrepreneurial minded for the arduous tasks lying ahead. The training is a 10 week rigorous curriculum that will cover areas such as Book Keeping and Accounting, Entrepreneurship and Economic Policy, Business Plan Development, Human Resource Management, Design Thinking and Disruption among others. An exam follows immediately after the training and successful applicants will be eligible for a soft loan to finance their startups. Applicants are expected to reside in Kaduna state to qualify for the scheme but of course it is not limited to Kaduna indigenes alone and the venture must be within real sectors e.g. production, allied services, manufacturing etc.

Why are we optimistic about the scheme? The Kaduna Startup and Entrepreneurship Program is an initiative introduced by the administration of Mallam Nasir El Rufai in order to facilitate job creation opportunity for the young and unemployed in the state. The 12 week long program is a partnership with the Bank of Industry and the Kaduna Business School. The Governor of Kaduna state has been a defiant figure in the fight against corruption during his time at the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE) and as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory during President Olusegun Obasanjo regime. Governor El Rufai has been credited with bringing sanity to the FCT. We hope the Governor’s magic wand will help revolutionize entrepreneurship in the state and create a pathway for many state governments in the country.

Business / Fishing And Decision Making by sanod(m): 11:14am On Jan 24, 2016
You know, people who don’t fish think fishing is a lazy, boring and useless exercise one gets involved in, but to me; it is complete opposite. There are a hundred little of decisions to be made, variables to be considered and you are never quite sure what made the difference. Did I cast too high or too far from the left; did I reel it in too slow or too fast; is the lure too shiny or too dull; should I stay here or try to go over there. And we all know fishing is not luck, but we do not know by how much or what exactly the decision is, or how we failed at achieving the target.

Unfortunately, decision comes in as sun sets, ranging from atomic issues like whether to go to work; brand of coffee to have; what to wear, to life-changing decisions like being an entrepreneur or an addicted user of ; and finally comes down to who to marry.
Some of the major factors that influence our decision making could be; Intuition: using our gut-feeling about possible cause of action. Reasoning: using the facts and figures before us to make decisions. And finally, Opinion: Is not a denial anymore, that most of us seek opinion from people before we take actions. But emotions, situations and past experience are synonymous to human reasoning, which anchors people’s judgement.

People are predictable, unchanging, and monotonous, so are decisions; they use the same language, they offer the same excuses, and they cause the same failure. People are endlessly disappointing because we keep hoping they won’t be. For you not to really feel disappointed, you need to be strong, you should prepare to stand for yourself, be independent, no help-call every time. All these behaviours are predictable, unchanging and in fact, disappointing; which often turns to frustration, frustration turns to resentment, resentment turns to anger, angers turn to rage, and rage to indifference. Once you are indifferent, you keep making wrong decisions.

Fishing is good, because you would never feel disappointed, because you will be effectively decisive, because you won’t expect anything, because anything is possible. Fishing gets you hope, even in failure.

Career / Tiwa-savaging A Success by sanod(m): 11:36am On Jan 22, 2016
Many young individuals use brands to measure up a success, thus, the adjective ‘tiwa-savaging’. Success, as it sounds very subjective, greatly depends on individuals; that is, accomplishment of one’s aim or purpose. In some fields, it only takes 5 steps to reach that success point, while it requires 8 steps to reach in others.
Achieving success is like a race; either determining to run because someone is chasing you or aiming to reach the winning mark first. No easy or simple answers from the interviewed successful people so far by BENEFiT, they all discussed some lessons they have learned so far. General points are keyed to be about persistence, determination, and resiliency.
After having a short discussion with some inspiring people, I started thinking about tens of dream chasing, successful, and happy people around me. And it is not hard to achieve as well, one just need to consider some basic facts during the pursuit.

Don’t get distracted:
Listening to others is fine, but not at the expense of your intuition. Some moments would fail you, weak ones would discourage you, disappointments would come by; those things are compulsory in your success chase. Some of us are meant to distract you, it is normal, this happens not to you alone. In essence, what you should be looking for, is to give yourself a sense of inside worthiness, and not generating confusion internally. Giving full attention to people’s perception of you is a shake-able foundation for success. They happen purposely to distract your focus. You better count them in and ignore distractions, otherwise your success story won’t be interesting when telling. Just as I believe, no one should spend time worrying about everyone’s perception of himself, or what people want him to be, you eventually lose focus and forget what you are to be.

Identify those interested in you and not your accomplishments:
You will know when someone congratulating you on your new achievement is truly happy or just jealous. People would love you are not hard to discover, do everything to hold them and never let them go. They are the fuel to achieving the success. To wrong people, you would never have any worth, but would mean everything to the right people.

Fighting the past:
When you think of random mistakes you have made, the memory would bring some taste of sadness. But when you think how strong you are, what you want to become, every part of the memories would bring you closer to your success; do you know why? Because they are not just memories, they are not just flash-backs, they are encouragements playing out perfectly. You can’t fight the past, you can’t fight failure, but your determination can conquer success, so the time has come to put the past behind, and look at the future; because if you don’t, you can’t have one.

Don’t give up on prayer:
In achieving success, everything has a part to play, not just your physical being should struggle in the pursuit, spiritual also should. Prayer is the last hope for a desperate man; my saying. Honestly, when you are in a tight situation; when you start doubting your journey; as if the world is coming down on you, the only thing you should think about is PRAYER. You are grown enough to have faith. It is free to do. Prayer itself is a very pure, single-mindedly and powerful tool, it works like bacteria which have only one purpose; ‘’Divide and Conquer’’. That’s why at the end, whoever prays always win.
