I also noticed people come to beg for money when you packed by road side to buy something or pick calls. At times at ATM machine or bank entrance. It's becoming too frequent and rampant. I guess this economy is hitting us hard.

Tani Olohun is facing defamation charges in four separate lawsuits filed in three different courts across the state.

Abdulazeez Adegbola, popularly known as Tani Olohun, a traditional religion worshipper, was granted bail by a Kwara Chief Magistrates Court sitting in Ilorin on Thursday after spending 91 days in the custody of the Federal Correctional Service in Ilorin, the state capital.

Tani Olohun is facing defamation charges in four separate lawsuits filed in three different courts across the state.

He had been detained since August 17, 2023, when he was charged with five counts of alleged criminal conspiracy, inciting public disturbance, disturbing public peace, criminal defamation of character, and intentional insult before the Chief Magistrate Court.

The offence according to the prosecution was contrary to sections 97, 210, 392, and 114 of the penal code law of Nigeria.

He was also arraigned before the Kwara State Upper Area Court presided by Mr Sunday Adeniyi on similar charges.

Also in two separate cases, One Sheilk Labeeb Lagbaji and Modirasatu Muhammed led by Professor Abubakar Aliagan have also dragged him before Magistrate Mohammed Adam for alleged defamation of Alhaji Labeeb Lagbaji and burning of the Holy Quran respectively.

He pleaded not guilty to all the charges. The grant of his bail application was confirmed by his lawyer, Mr Ademola Bank, to PUNCH, adding that his client had tendered an apology and had repented.

The lawyer added that his client had begged for forgiveness from Islamic Scholars and the entire Muslims and prayed the court to grant him bail in liberal terms.

Taofeeq Olateju and Y.Y Ajibade, counsels for the two complainants, Labeeb Lagbaji and Modirasatu Mohammed Islamic organisation, respectively, did not oppose Tani Olohun's bail plea.

SaharaReporters earlier reported how a Kwara State Upper Area Court in Ilorin had granted bail to the Isese (indigenous religion) practitioner but Tani Olohun could not be released as the magistrate court was yet to grant him bail. But as a result of the new ruling of the Magistrate court, Tani-Olohun would be able to breathe free air and return home if the bail terms were met.

On Thursday, Magistrate Adam presided over a court that granted Tani Olohun bail and ordered him to pay N2 million and three sureties in the same amount in two distinct instances.

According to the court, two of the sureties must hold a landed property within the Court's jurisdiction or in Oyo State, where he claimed to be a resident.

A system glitch in MTN Nigeria’s system has caused the disappearance of debt on the accounts of subscribers who had borrowed credit from the company.

However, the subscribers believe the telecom operator deliberately cancelled their debts and, hence, are already jubilating and thanking the company.

An official of MTN confirmed to Nairametrics that the disappearance of debts in the subscribers’ accounts was a glitch, meaning that the subscribers will still have to pay the supposed cleared debts once MTN rectifies the issue.

Also MTN in an official statement issued on Saturday in response to the development stated:

“MTN Nigeria Communications Plc can confirm a system glitch impacting balance enquiries. As a result, some customers may receive error messages showing that their balances have been cleared.

“This is not the case and all balances will reflect accurate figures once the problem is resolved. Our engineers are currently working to ensure this. Please accept our apologies. We regret the inconvenience.”

Subscribers’ reactions

Many subscribers of MTN who woke up to the discovery of the debt disappearance on Saturday expressed excitement even as they thanked MTN for “cancelling” their debts.

Some of the subscribers that took to the microblogging site, X (formerly Twitter) advised loan app companies in the country to follow the MTN example.

“Though I own MTN Nigeria some debt I want to thank them for paying off all their customer’s debt because of the hardships in this country… Thank you MTN Group for paying back to society… We love you"
