My Elder brother died about nine months ago and his wife is about to Remarry.

They had been married for ten whole years, but unable to bear a child for 7years, until God blessed them with a beautiful and lovely baby Girl. We all celebrated and were joyous. A few weeks after childbirth, my brother became sick. What initially looked like an ulcer became something else, and he had to go under the knife. After the surgery, there were some Terrible complications, which resulted in his eventual demise. Most painful part was, he had just landed his dream job after five years of graduation. He was extremely depressed as a result of this joblessness until luck smiled at him. He was traveling round the world like he was going to his backyard. He was breezing in and out of Nigeria for official duties until the sickness struck.
Now it's been nine months, and she already made her intentions known to my family that she wants to Remarry. Meanwhile, the baby is just two and half years old.

As a woman, I understand how lonely and traumatized she is. I perfectly understand what she's going through but myself and my family feel it's too too early for this. We, her late husband's family didn't and have never interfered in her dealings. All my brother's properties are in her custody, the Businesses they co-owned are all in her care.

I thought she would have waited a bit much longer to do this, considering how much she seemingly loved her late husband. Meanwhile she's 38yrs old. Her parents have told her to wait for some time, but she wouldn't listen. But before making her intentions known to my family, we already suspected that she was seeing someone else, going by the way she was acting.

I'm now the next in command in my family after my elder Brother's death, but I'm also a woman and have limited powers. Even if I had all the powers, I still wouldn't be Able to stop her from doing what she wants. After All, she's older than me.

I'm really pissed now as she will be taking my niece to live with another man. She's marrying a man who already has two wives, making her the third.

Kingsway stores. Waoh. Good to remember. Just like UTC and Leventis stores then it Lagos. There was Chellarams too just before Kingsway. They were more than Shoprite. It was facing what was they known as Quay side or “key side” as everyone pronounced the entire front facing Lagos lagoon. It had very huge shopping floors with mostly foreign goods. You could purchase everything from groceries to food to household equipments, clothes, bicycles and the now famous Mr. Biggs situated on the ground floor at a time was known as Kingsway rendezvous! Kingsway was a branch of UAC and very well organized until horrible leaderships ensured that such stores as mentioned were shut down. People took off their shoes and slippers as they walked into the place believing that it was the rule. Security personnel at the doors would ask them to please wear their shoes and slippers. Na people from Mushin, Maroko and Ajegunle dey comot shoe for leg enter Kingsway, Leventis and UTC. They were considered bush people!

Each time you get to Marina, in front of Oando before CMS bus stop, you cannot but take a look at the building, where Kingsway was housed. Those who lived in Apapa should know that. Leventis stores had a branch in Surulere at James Robertson. It was situated at the junction enroute through Akerele to what was and still as known as bus corner bus stop. Those who live around Ogunlana, Shitta, Masha, Randle Avenue, Lawsnson, etc should know the popular bus corner bus stop. Lagos too sweet and peaceful, before until politicians came in 1999 and brought divisions.

I am an Environmental & Sustainability Specialist outside Nigeria - Although originally a Lagosian - The issue of Lagos flooding, i would agree that though you have pointed out the major problem. Your solution will not work in Lagos or any other place that experiences such rainfalls as it does in Lagos.
UAE, Qatar, Houston, Moscow that are even desert, highlands could not even cope with the downpour this year alone.
I once profer a solution to the Lagos State Env Dept, months later, i discovered that they have all that in place. However, coming to understand the complexity of the problem, there is almost no solution-

The main solution is to have a concrete collector tank (surface reservoirs) where all the water can be channeled. The water to be treated for re-use. Such tanks will be huge such that it can take almost the number of rainfalls in Lagos all year round. We have such a system in my country of resident - but then they hold the water and eventually discharge it inside the ocean when the tides are low. Such reservoir will be created across the State with pumps connecting them through sump pit, to deep wells.

Well, as i learnt, Lagos has the sump in place, the recharge well is in place (some) and they have started the construction of the reservoirs. It is very expensive, but in 20 years' time, hopefully it will be done.

After all, said, this will only reduce the impact of rainfall and flooding. The habits of the people, blocking drains, channels, gullies, manholes etc. has to be improved.


The other option is to start Lekki / VI reconstruction from a start - proper planning with adequate flood mitigation plans in place before construction is re-started.
