Nigeria is blessed with abundant marine resources, summed up in the vast internal water reserves and the territorial sea. This huge marine resource base provides support for the bustling maritime industry, transportation, recreation, and the source of other aqua-resources and sea food. It is incontrovertible that among the littoral countries along the gulf of Guinea, that Nigeria is the most endowed in term her obvious great marine resources. This is more evident in the prime place her maritime industry occupies and the crucial role she plays in the West Africa sub region and beyond. Sadly today, marine activities and the entire maritime industry suffer from one of the greatest problems of the Nigerian State –Insecurity. Every part of the nation as it is, has its own share of the problem of insecurity. This extends to the coastal states that host over 90% of marine activities and even worse. The innumerable benefits harvested from marine activities are being constantly challenged, if not dwarfed by insecurity. As insecurity gradually shepherds the marine/ oil and gas industry to a comatose state through the steady depletion of the gains of operations, if things remain the same and measures are not taken to stem this hydra headed dragon, we may be left with a nose diving sector that is apparently chaotic. The problems of insecurity are well documented both within our internal water ways and the territorial waters. Within the Niger Delta alone, which covers an area of about 70,000 square kilometer and holds an enormous marine capacity, criminality along the waterways seems to have been domesticated. There are countless cases of the kidnapping and hostage taking of expatriates, workers in the marine /oil and gas industry, and even local people and indigenes. There are many ‘War Lords’ who have made what looks like a prosperous careers out of criminality. These have built economic fortresses and now maintain a phalanx of ardent foot soldiers who now enforce lawlessness along our water ways. Close to this is the issue of piracy which has become a menace not just within our internal water ways but across the length and breadth of territorial waters. The situation of things now is taking a frightening dimension. Most of those who perpetrate crimes along the creeks and water ways now hobnob with state actors who help to back up their illegal activities with some form of legitimacy. There is also a mechanism which allows the state actors reap from the proceeds of crime, either in cash or in kind. In coastal communities, especially those of the Niger Delta, the geographical space has been inundated with illegal artisan refineries. These are run by the criminal “Lords of the Creeks”. Apart from the huge environmental risk and degradation that these refining activities constitute to the immediate environment, there is also a great degree of pillage and drain of crucial national resources. These centres provide a “vocation” and source of funding for criminal activities. The more insecurity and criminality thrive along our water ways, the more a healthy development of all marine / oil and gas related industry is hampered. It therefore behooves the government and all her agencies charged with security to make concerted efforts geared towards making our water ways safe. There should be punitive legislations and very stringent penalties for those caught perpetrating any form of crime along the water way. There should also be a closure of the criminal camps in the creeks that house these criminals. Efforts should be made to increase the presence of security personnel like Navy, Marine Police etc. to effectively secure our water ways. Marine / oil and gas activities abound in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. The Niger delta is located south –south Nigeria. it consists of all the areas where the tributaries of the river Niger empties into the Atlantic. By virtue of its high deposit of petroleum and natural gas, in addition to its littoral nature, the region holds over 80% of marine / oil and gas activities in the nation. In Nigeria, due to poor maritime infrastructures and inadequate ports, jetties are increasingly becoming important as quasi ports, offering ancillary services to compliment the ports and other maritime facilities. This work therefore focuses on Jetties in Niger Delta: Challenges and the Way Forward. Before I proceed, it’s important to note that the word Jetty gives itself to several meanings. One, It may mean a bridge or staircase used by passengers for either embankment or dis-embankment from boat, aircraft etc. Secondly, it could also mean a break water constructed to protect or defend a habour, stretch of coast or river bank. Finally, Jetty can also refer to a land stage or small pier at which boats can dock or be moored. For the purpose of this work, the word Jetty is majorly used in the last sense. Jetties like already pointed out earlier are of great importance to the economy. As a subsector, jetties have a great share of the total revenue that accrue to the entire maritime sector. They are not just pivotal to the growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), employment generation and overall economic development, but are now the corner stone of marine transportation. Its importance becomes more obvious especially in the oil and gas industry facilitating the movement of heavy duty equipment and personnel. It is however sad to note that despite the critical role jetties play, they are constantly plagued by many challenges. One of such is the total absence of infrastructures. As it is with many other sectors in developing countries, jetties to say the least are blank when it comes to infrastructure. Most are in comatose state, lacking even basic utilities like electricity. The best and most equipped are still not digitized, using operation facilities close to the instruments of the Stone Age. This pathetic state does not just hampers smooth operations but continuously constitutes a clog on the wheel of efficiency and optimum service Most time jetties are safe haven for criminals and men of the underworld. Many criminal gangs and other outlawed nocturnal groups find refuge in jetties .As such, Corporate entities and many other individuals most times are discouraged from using the jetty because of frequent crimes like robbery, kidnapping, swindling etc. .There are also frequent cases of the theft of marine equipment, arson and sometimes, burglary and destruction of properties. Most of the time jetty operations are not standardized, because of its informal sector outlook. This accounts for why business activities and other processes are not well structured. Though the sector is a source of revenue to government as pointed out, its contribution to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) cannot be ascertained. Close to this, is the issue of multiple taxation on operators and other businesses in the jetty. It is inarguable that the act of over taxation depletes the prospects of business in one hand, while on the other hand, discourages investment in the subsector and helps pipe away profit. For the leasing of marine / oil and gas equipment, for leasing private jetty or equipment management Marineng is the best place. For more info: www.marinenigeria.con 07036248614 09037490893

The marine / oil and gas equipment management industry is basically made up of two sides. One, is that which is full of many success stories. Stories of corporate entities and many high net worth individuals, who over the years, have made hugh impacts and towering strides in the industry. On the other side of the industry, consists of corporate entities and individuals players with constantly dwindling fortunes, occasioned by business operations frequently marked by failures and sustained setbacks. What determines the side of the divide one falls, is your choice of equipment Management Company. To state this differently, what is meant by the above, is that the capital intensive nature of marine / oil and gas equipment leasing industry requires hugh funds to set up. After such hugh cost, what then decides whether profit is made or not is who manages the equipment. That is why the choice of an equipment management firm is critical to the success or failure of the business. An individual who has all the marine / oil and gas equipment but lacks the professional knowledge of its management, or leaves it in the hand of an inexperienced equipment management firm, stands the risk of being put out of business, due to losses and poor management. There are several steps that lead to the choice of a good equipment management firm. A haphazard process that is not meticulously followed may lead to undesirably outcome. One major process of choosing a good equipment management firm is to critically examine the track record of the equipment management firm in question. A company with poor service delivery and loads of unsatisfied clients, without any traceable record of excellence should not be considered in the choice of an equipment firm. Firms like this have one thing in common, a constantly shrinking fortune which is albatross to business growth and overall success. In the choice of an equipment management company, any firm which does not consider integrity as part of its business ethics, or plays down on standards and due process, should not be considered. Equipment management companies that lack integrity and trust have the penchant of reneging on contractual agreements. Companies whose processes forbid conventions and industry standards most often veer off legal limits for gains. The quality of manpower at the disposal of an equipment management company and its professional capacity, expressed in the quality of service and reflected in the years of experience, constitute another tangible guide in determining the choice of marine / oil and gas equipment management company. This is more so, if one considers the place of experience and productivity in business. Any firm that is relatively new, or lacks requisite professional ability in equipment management may find it difficult to break even, let alone make profit in the industry. They may never be in a position to offer technical advice to both clients and owners. For the best service in marine / oil and gas equipment leasing or equipment management Marineng is the best choice. For more info: www.marinenigeria.com 07036248614 09037490893

A major reason why you should choose a tested and reliable company in all your marine/oil and gas equipment leasing is to get the best service available. There are many substandard equipment leasing companies out there. Most of these companies make bogus claims and promises they obviously lack the resources and capacity to deliver. What happens is that when they are finally contracted, they offer less than promised. So it is imperative that in your choice of an equipment leasing company, you must look out for the one that has the capacity to deliver. You can determine this by running a background check to investigate or ascertain if it has a track record in service delivery before contracting them for equipment leasing. Close to this, is the issue of integrity. We all know the importance or if you like, the place of integrity in business .Many companies in the marine/oil and gas equipment leasing industry lack trust. There is this get rich quick syndrome. Many individuals and corporate clients are sometimes short changed or out rightly duped of their money after they have entered contractual agreement and payment made. The matter is made worse when you consider the amount of money invested, knowing that marine/oil and gas equipment leasing is always capital intensive. There are different instances where dubious leasers reneged on contractual agreement and made away with huge amount. In choosing a marine/oil and gas equipment leasing company to handle one’s equipment leasing needs, you also have to look out for experience .Choosing an inexperienced company to lease marine equipment could lead to great losses. The company may not be in a position to advice you on the type of marine/oil and gas equipment that will be best suited for your operations. An experienced marine equipment leasing company like Marineng, offers professional and technical advice to clients that help them make cost effective decisions in equipment leasing. Besides this, another reason to choose a marine equipment leasing company with a towering track record of excellence is because of the additional services they provide when they are contracted for equipment leasing business. For instance, at Marineng, we offer additional tracking services which helps you have a good knowledge of the actual position of your goods and consignment at all times. We provide other additional services, especially in logistics. This is not common among equipment leasing companies. Most times, what is obtainable in the industry is that equipment leasing companies hands off, once their equipment are leased, leaving their clients to bear the cost and burden of logistics and other additional services. For your marine/oil and gas equipment leasing, Marineng is the best place to go, if you want a satisfactory service .We have for lease various marine equipment like: boats, barges and vessels of different types and sizes. Our services also extend to equipment management and manpower supplies. Our office is at Suite 17 Sentels Plaza, No 24, East-West Road, Opposite Deeper Life Headquarters, Rumuodara, Port Harcourt. Equipment leasing has become a big subsector in the marine/oil and gas industry in Nigeria. This subsector is increasingly becoming an all comers affair due mainly to its lucrative nature. But the high capital investment that goes into its full establishment, accounts for the few established players in the industry. For the new comers in the industry (both the equipment owners and potential clients), there are several dangers in the industry that are capable of ruining your business or making you to incur losses, if not properly handled. One of such problems is touting. Touting is one of the greatest setbacks in the equipment leasing industry in Nigeria. There are a lot of touts who lay claims to what they are not and end up either misleading or shortchanging unsuspecting clients. Most complains by clients about poor service in the industry, is more often than not, the result of business dealings with touts in the industry who cannot provide quality service due to lack of sound professional background. Close to the above is the issue of swindlers in the industry. The marine environment is full of men with shady characters who may have no business or stake in the industry but are there just to swindle clients. Many who do not do their due diligence before entering into contract with equipment leasing company end up most times losing millions of naira to swindlers who pose as leasers. Insecurity also features as a great challenge in the industry. This is more so when one considers that the coastal regions where greater part of marine/ oil and gas activities take place, have unarguably the greatest share of criminal activities, sea piracy, youth restiveness, kidnapping, deadly nocturnal groups, cults, etc. The activities of these criminal elements often result to violent crimes, theft of equipment, kidnap of crew etc., thus frustrating the smooth operation of the industry. To get the best service in the equipment leasing industry, one is advised to deal with authentic equipment leasing companies like Marineng. When you lease our equipment, we provide security and tracking services at no additional cost. Marineng is committed to serving you anytime. The need to protect our long built integrity and the desire for satisfactory service delivery keeps us on the path of excellence. Marineng has greatly impacted the marine/oil and gas equipment leasing industry in so many ways in Nigeria. One can comfortably say that the coming of marineng into the industry has brought unquantifiable value. There are several concepts that the company has introduced, that have revolutionized the industry in many ways. Before now, there was almost no event that brought industry players and stakeholders together .All that is now history, since marineng entered the scene. From time to time, many events that seek to improve performance and efficiency in the industry is frequently planned and executed workshops, seminars, conferences, etc., that were once rare, have become common place in the industry, courtesy of marineng. Through the efforts of marineng, there is now a periodic equipment exhibition fair. This in itself is a great innovation in the industry. Prior to this time, equipment owners had very little avenue to showcase their business to the world. But that has all changed. With the introduction of equipment exhibition, corporate and private equipment owners now have the much sort after plat form to advertise their business to potential customers. The publicity and exposure from this, has given many businesses a new life and consequently broadened their scope, customer base and coverage. Marineng is a company with many “firsts”. We can say with a great degree of confidence that the company was among the first to introduce free tracking service into the industry. When our equipment are leased, Free tracking is one of the additional services we render to clients to enable them keep a watch of their goods or consignment from point of departure to destination. Again, due to the volatile nature of coastal states occasioned by insecurity, especially in the marine / oil and gas industry, marineng now offers additional security services to clients and customers who choose us for their marine / oil and gas equipment leasing; without any additional charges. We are about the only companies that does this. We also handle any additional logistics that directly stem from our services. Apart from equipment leasing, marineng is also into equipment management and manpower supplies for both corporate entities and individuals.
