Study Reveals Women are More Charitable Despite the high-profile philanthropic activities of men like Bill Gates, women of all ages are generally more inclined to donate to charities, and give bigger amounts than their male counterparts. This is the finding in the survey of 8,000 households entitled WomenGive 2010 conducted by the Women’s Philanthropy Institute, which showed that women in four of five income brackets are more willing to donate to charities. Those interviewed have posited various reasons for donating – including old ladies wanting to look good in their final years to idealistic young women wanting to network with like-minded souls. Most of the women surveyed have established a charitable career since their youth, starting out by giving old toys and clothes and gradually moving to donating cash to institutions close to their hearts. |
Law vs Policy Laws and policies are very needed in our society as they help in maintaining law and order in the society and help in shaping political and social aspects of the society. Though policies and laws can be interrelated, they are definitely two terms having different purposes. No nation can go forward without having certain laws and policies. A policy is that which outlines what a government is going to do and what it can achieve for the society as a whole. “Policy” also means what a government does not intend to do. It also evolves the principles that are needed for achieving the goal. Policies are only documents and not law, but these policies can lead to new laws. Laws are set standards, principles, and procedures that must be followed in society. Law is mainly made for implementing justice in the society. There are various types of laws framed like criminal laws, civil laws, and international laws. While a law is framed for bringing justice to the society, a policy is framed for achieving certain goals. Laws are for the people, and policies are made in the name of the people. Policies can be called a set of rules that guide any government or any organization. Laws are administered through the courts. Laws are enforceable in which the policies comply. A law is more formal as it is a system of rules and guidelines that are derived for the welfare and equity in society. A policy is just informal as it is just a statement or a document of what is intended to be done in the future. Summary: 1.Policies outline what a government is going to do and what it can achieve for society as a whole. Policies also mean what a government does not intend to do. 2.Policies are only documents and not law, but these policies can lead to new laws. 3.Laws are set standards, principles, and procedures that must be followed in society. Laws are mainly made for implementing justice in society. 4.While laws are framed for bringing justice to the society, a policy is framed for achieving certain goals. 5.Laws are administered through the courts. Laws are enforceable in which the policies comply. 6.A law is more formal as it is a system of rules and guidelines that are derived for the welfare and equity in society. A policy is just informal as it is just a statement or a document of what is intended to be done in the future. Since the creation of Federal Republic of Nigeria, do we have Laws and Policies in working force? |
Android vs Smartphones When it comes to cellular phones, there are many buzzwords being used to indicate or promote products. The two common terms we hear are smartphones and Android phones. So how do they differ from each other? Well smartphones are a classification of phones that have advanced capabilities beyond the call and messaging features that we’ve come to expect. On the other hand, Android is not a specific type of phone but an operating system that is used mainly in smartphones. Smartphones have been around for quite some time already and its feature set has greatly expanded from the simple set of contacts list, calendar, planner, and a few more to photo capture, video recording, navigation, internet browsing, email handling, and even running productivity and entertainment applications. All of the big phone manufacturers have their own smartphone offerings but prior to Android, most companies had their own proprietary OS on their phones. As Android is just one of the many operating systems, you can therefore say that not all smartphones have the Android operating system. It is safe to say though that all phones that are running the Android OS are smartphones and not regular feature phones. The Android OS is also used for in more than just smartphones. It has also been predominantly used in tablets like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab, and even in some laptop designs. The evolution and adoption of Android since the initial release of the first commercial phone running it in 2008 has been nothing less than furious. In the span of roughly three years, it has undergone 5 major versions and has exploded to take the lead as the fastest selling smartphone OS. It has also spurred other companies like Microsoft, Blackberry, and Nokia to pursue a newer design to their respective operating systems. If you are choosing between an Android phone and other smartphones, you can rest assured that you would not be missing out on any features when going for an Android phone. Just keep in mind that the huge variety in Android phones means that there is an almost endless array to choose from. You should look closely at individual specs and make sure that it has the latest version of Android or that it can be upgraded. Summary: 1.Android is an operating system while smartphones is a phone classification 2.All phones running android are smartphones but not all smartphones are running Android |
Knowledge vs Information The human mind’s content is based on the kinds of things that one interacts with on a daily basis. Many a time people perceive things based on either what they have seen, experienced, heard, read, learned or inferred after some experimentation. These perceptions are then categorized in the mind as data, information, knowledge, understanding or wisdom. Unlike wisdom, information and knowledge perceptions are as a result of what the brain has recorded in the past. That said, we need to know how knowledge differs from information (if it does) and if one can exist without the other. Information refers to data that has been given some meaning by way of relational connection. In computing terms it is data that has been processed. The ‘meaning’ applied to the data may not necessarily be useful. For instance, data stored in a database can be processed by a procedure or a program to give information about something, for example a banking application can determine how a particular account balance increased by returning the record of the credit that occurred to that account using data stored in a database somewhere, so ‘information’ would have been retrieved about that transaction. It is important to know that without information, you will not have knowledge. So what is knowledge? Knowledge is the concise and appropriate collection of information in a way that makes it useful. Knowledge refers to a deterministic process where patterns within a given set of information are ascertained. We can also positively say that when a person memorizes some information about something, then they have knowledge about it. That knowledge will have some useful and even applicable use to them but even if that’s the case, that knowledge doesn’t in itself provide for integration such as would infer further knowledge. Take the example of elementary school kids who memorize knowledge of the multiplication table (times table), for instance like the result of 3 times 3 is 9(3x3=9), because they have amassed knowledge of the table. However, the kids will not be able to respond positively when asked the result of 2300x150 as that entry isn’t in the table. It takes true analytical ability and the ability to reduce it to empirical factual knowledge, not just some memorized set of knowledge. Summary: 1. Information is processed data whereas knowledge is information that is modeled to be useful. 2. You need information to be able to get knowledge. 3. Information deals with the way data is related while knowledge examines patterns within a given set of information. 4. To get knowledge you need some cognitive and analytical ability while for information you do not need cognitive ability. |

Civil Rights vs Civil Liberties Civil rights and civil liberties are granted to the people as per the Constitution. They are well defined in the Constitution. Civil rights are those that are granted by a government for the protection of its citizens in respect to guaranteeing fairness and checking discrimination. Civil liberties are the basic rights guaranteed to all citizens in a country without any further speciality. Civil liberties include right to privacy, freedom of speech, freedom from slavery and forced labour, right to a fair trial, right to marry, right to vote, right to life, freedom from torture, right to liberty, freedom of conscience, freedom of assembly, and freedom of expression. ‘Civil rights’ means an individual’s right to get equal treatment in cases of education, housing, employment, and a lot more. ‘Civil rights’ means free from discrimination or unfair treatment. Civil rights pertain to equal treatment of an individual irrespective of age, gender, race, and disability. On the other hand, ‘civil liberties’ are broader rights guaranteed in the Constitution. Islam vs Muslim Nearly one quarter of the world’s population follows the religion that was revealed to the Prophet Mohammed and subsequently transcribed into the Quran. Despite its number of faithful followers that have now settled across the globe, many Westerners don’t have a clear idea of what this religion entails. Subsequently, even incredibly fundamental questions, such as the difference between Islam and Muslim, arise as these same Westerners are being to explore their increasingly globalized world. Beyond linguistic distinctions, there is actually very few differences between Islam and Muslim. Definition of Islam and Muslim Islam : the meaning comes from the Arabic verbal noun (like a gerund) s-l-m. When appropriate vowel markers are added the word Islam appears. The etymology of s-l-m is to submit, accept, or surrender. From this comes Islam’s conventional definition of surrender to God. Muslim : also has its roots in the s-l-m verb. It is a participle of the verb and refers to a person who engages in the act of submission, acceptance, or surrender. Therefore a Muslim is a person who submits to the will of God, or a follower of Islam. Uses of Islam and Muslim Islam is generally used in conversation to denote the religion or community of believes as a whole. For instance: ‘The Islamic community in town will be celebrating Eid next week.’ It is also used when talking about the religion as a noun unto itself. For instance: ‘Islam is based on the sayings of the Prophet Mohammed that have been written down in the Quran.’ Muslim is generally used in conversation to qualify or distinguish a person. For instance, ‘Remember the Muslim man who works at the bank?’ It can also be used as a simple description of one’s religious beliefs. For instance: ‘He is Christian but she is Muslim.’ Because Muslims are a minority community in many countries and most of the West, describing someone as Muslim may also reflect on their lifestyle and choice of dress in addition to their religious beliefs. Misuses of Islam and Muslim Islam : grammatically speaking, Islam should only refer to the religion or acts done in the name of that religion, never a person who practices that religion. Islamic community and Islamic art are correct, Islamic man is not. Muslim should be used to describe all people of the Islamic faith but not the faith itself. You may say that you are interested in the religion of Muslims, but never in the Muslim religion. Summary: 1.Islam and Muslim are both words used to describe the religion revealed to the Prophet Mohammed. 2.Islam and Muslim both have the same origin in the Arabic verb s-l-m. 3.Islam is the act of submitting to the will of God whereas a Muslim is person who participates in the act of submission. 4.To be correctly used, Islam or Islamic should describe the religion and its subsequent cultural concepts whereas Muslim should only describe the followers of the religion of Islam. |
Communism vs Democracy Communism and democracy are two different ideologies that have rendered great impact in the world. Communism can be termed as a socio economic structure that stands for the establishment of a classless, egalitarian and stateless society. Democracy is a political system of governance either carried out by the people directly or by elected representatives. Communism is a political ideology that is based on a common ownership, mainly concerned with equality and fairness. In communism, the power is vested in a group of people who decide the course of action. It is this group of people who decide on the activities of the public. These groups of people may interfere in the public life of others. On the other hand, democracy, which also stands for equality in the society, is governed by a group of elected people. Democracy is a rule by the people and the elected representatives are bound to fulfil the wishes of the society. A big difference seen between democracy and communism is in the term of economic systems. In communism, the government has complete control over the production and distribution of goods and all the resources and it is shared in the society equally. But in democracy, this aspect is not there. In communism, it is the community or the society that holds the major resources and production. This helps in preventing any single person or a group of people from raising to a higher position than others or becoming rich. But in democracy, free enterprising is allowed, which means that people or groups can have their own businesses. This can lead to rich and poor in society. Coming to democracy, there are no specific principles that define it. But democracy is based on the principle of equality and freedom. It is also based on the principle that all citizens have equal rights. Another principle that defines democracy is that the citizens have certain liberties and freedoms, which are protected by the constitution. In communism private ownership is not allowed whereas in democracy it is allowed. Summary 1.Communism is a socio economic system that stands for the establishment of a classless, egalitarian and stateless society. Democracy is a political system of governance either carried out by the people directly or by elected representatives. 2.In communism, the power is vested in a group of people who decide the course of action. Democracy is a rule by the people and the elected representatives are bound to fulfil the wishes of the society. 3.In communism private ownership is not allowed whereas in democracy it is allowed. |
